Chicken Chef - North Main Winnipeg I would do NO star but it won't let me. May 8, 2026 Reuben sandwich had mold on the crust. Replaced bread with barely toasted bread. Gave the same French fries on a different plate. Scraped the reub filling from original sandwich onto the barely toasted new bread. Instead of not charging for the meal they would only discount the meal by 10% which made it $18 on the bill. Disgusting. read more

I was here once. The personnel was very friendly​ and chatty. There were a ​plethora of free space inside. I choose a table and got a menu​ within a minute. Service was surprisingly​ fast and I didn't wait too​ long to get my meal. Why has it taken me so long to try Chicken Chef?!? OMG, fried chicken has to be one of my guilty pleasures. But I am also vain and like to maintain my figure, so if I am going to splurge calorically for a night, that fried chicken better be good. Good thing, I lucked out because I was pretty impressed with Chicken Chef; the chicken was fried perfectly! Don't even bother with KFC! The "bantam bucket" ($29.25) serves 4-5 and comes with 12 pieces chicken, large fries, large coleslaw and 4 Weston buns. I had a coupon (another great thing about this place) so it came to $25.99. They have coupons on their website all the time. There was a good assortment of white and dark meat so it will please a crowd. I love that the meat had a good flavour, I figure that the meat was brined for a while. The white meat was juicy and moist - a rarity with fried chicken. The fries were unsalted, kinda nice since you can adjust accordingly. Fries were nice and crispy. The coleslaw had very thinly shredded cabbage, it wasn't too creamy and had a nice tang too it. Also tried the potato salad, I'm not a huge fan of it but my sister really liked it. It had eggs, potatoes, green onions and carrots - a little too creamy and rich for me. I call these Weston buns because they sell these at Superstore (from Weston Bakery) in a large package. They're great for BBQ season. It's very much the refined white bun but I eat so much whole grain stuff daily so I am so happy when I get to eat baked goods made with white flour! LOL. I ordered take out but I didn't realize that the Chicken Chef on Marion is also a dine in restaurant. And that they offered more items than chicken and pizza in the restaurant. There were a lot of items written up on the white board like reubens, burgers, lasagna etc. They even serve breakfast here all day long. Who knew? The interior is quite dated, very dark wallpaper with massive flower patterns. But it has that family style restaurant feel to it as it seemed to attract a lot of people from the neighbourhood. I've heard so many good things about this restaurant, so I thought I would finally try it. We made a special trip to go there. The chicken was good, we loved the gravy. When we arrived we got no greeting (which is fine) I went up to the counter and got ignored, a couple of the employees looked right at me. Another customer went up to the counter and they knew him and served him first. Which I found a little bit rude. Than when I finally was able to order I had a couple questions. (With it being my first time going there) I received a eye roll and sigh with each one. (Total of only two questions) They really need to work on customer service. I am visitor to Winnipeg and had a good experience with Chicken Chef a few years ago. On this trip, I chanced upon the St-Boniface location on Marion Street. First, the positive. The fried chicken was well prepared, well-seasoned and crispy. For those who know about this guilty pleasure, they clearly brine the chicken or soak it in seasoned buttermilk. The fact that the chicken tasted good is what elevated this review from two to three stars. The service was fast and reasonably friendly at the outset. My meal was a three-piece meal with mashed potatoes, coleslaw and roll. Aside for this, it seems like they are indifferent about REPEAT custom. For just under $12, I got a drumstick, wing and thigh. The pieces were smaller than average and I would have been embarrassed about serving that plate. When I asked if I could have a piece of white meat, I was told that it was alright, but I should have mentioned that when I ordered. I guess I erroneously assumed that for that price, getting one piece of white wouldn't be a special "favor". Instead of replacing one of the tiny drumstick or wing pieces, they replaced the thigh. The coleslaw was good, but the mashed potatoes tasted watered down. For the price I paid, it just didn't represent good value and I left there still a bit hungry. My server checked in once when I exchanged pieces, but never again. I was not thanked, even when I paid my bill at the entrance counter. It seems like this restaurant team REALLY needs a kick in the butt to up their devotion to providing patrons with a good experience - an experience that will lead to repeat business. I was recently in the Chicken Chef for the first time. Although I don't really like eating chicken because I have some issues with factory farming, sometimes I just can't resist trying out fried chicken when I see a fried chicken joint. Sorry chickens! Despite that I had a very pleasant experience at the Chicken Chef. In case you don't know, it is a Canadian chain restaurant. I ordered the three piece with fries and macaroni for about about 10$ and believe me it was a big improvement on what KFC dishes out. The chicken pieces were big, meaty and perfectly fried. No extra grease on them there. The fries were also perfectly done, and as another reviewer stated were unsalted. That is nice that they leave the seasoning to your own tastes. I asked for the hot sauce and it was quickly delivered. It was the real thing. Much hotter than most with some true kick. My server checked on my several times and gave me a refill on my coke without any prompting at all. I would definitely go back again. Unless I become a vegetarian of course..... read more
