My clan and I were craving some filipino food today. Went into Kalan to try it out…read more Upon walking in, my impression of the decor was exactly what one could expect from a small restaurant that was just starting out. A few tropical paintings here and there. Nothing too fancy, but it was very clean. One thing I absolutely hate about some places is walking into a restaurant and seeing dirty tables everywhere. Not the case here. Very clean place. Where this restaurant lacks in decor however, it makes up for in great food, plentiful portions, and suprisingly low price. Significant Other and I both ordered a 3 piece combo ($8.99). Which essentially gets you 3 side dishes of your choice (there are plenty to choose from!) and unlimited white rice. Service is extremely quick, as all the food is premade and put out buffet-ish style. Sort of like those food court chinese restaurants. Just point out what you want and they will plate it for you. Now dont go thinking, that just because its all premade, you wont be getting top quality food.. oh no.. if you thought that way, go ahead and give yourself a slap upside the head. The food quality is actually quite excellent. And again, you get MASSIVE portions. I ordered up some Lechon Kawali (deep fried pork pieces, skin on), Kare Kare (a soupy dish made with vegetables, beef, and peanut butter), and Calderetta (beef chunks adorned with potatoes and bell peppers in a gravy like sauce). Again, UNLIMITED white rice... so naturally, being the rice lover that I am, I went ahead and built myself a glorious mountain of whitey goodness upon my plate. The lechon was cooked just right, with the skin being just crispy enough without being too hard while still maintaining a tender juicy layer of meat beneath. The kare-kare was flavorful.. even more so with the bagoong (fermented shrimp) that was served alongside. Perfection. I'd imagine the Calderetta I ordered is of the same exceptional quality but as I've said... MASSIVE portions. I was already too stuffed to eat anymore. To sum up, Kalan has great value in that its only $8.99 for an amount of food that could easily be spread out over several meals. Service is fast and friendly. If you're looking for a place to leave you feeling satisfied in every respect, look no further than Kalan. *burp*

Their prices went up but the portions are not always the same. A few times in their buffet the food items are cold. And one time the sausage that I order was ice cold. It seems like they reheat their food. It is not fresh!!! Customer service lacks big time. I usually go to la mirage because it is close by were I work. I go there during my breaks. One time I had to wait almost an hour for my breakfast. I demanded to have a refund because I have to go back to work but they refused and told me to wait. There excuse was they had a big party to serve. But while I was waiting some of those people were putting their orders after me and getting their orders right away. I advise any one do not go there. Save your time and money. Go to Myrna's on Sergeant. They are faster service and cheaper. Or right across the street at Buenos!! I hope the owner of la Mirage look at this page because you should fire some of your service people.

Everything was very good, the star of the show was the sisig. It brought in so many flavors. I was told after we left they are known for the chicken so maybe next time. The one thing we didn't love was dessert I do not recommend the Halala. Too much going on in that dessert.

Went to @Max's Restaurant in St. James today, Oct 12, with a group of friends. One friend was told…read moreby a male employee, not sure if he's a supervisor or a server, that they'll need 15-20 minutes to get our table ready for us. Meanwhile, 3/4 of the room was empty. I went to use the bathroom and waited after by the counter for our table, while my friends were in the waiting area. The same guy, was talking to other staff members with a condescending and loud tone, telling them to calm down and not to worry. He then asked if I needed a table, I said yes and for four. He said the wait is for an hour. I was shocked when I heard that, as 2 minutes ago he told my one friend that it's only a 15-20 minutes wait. No other customer came in, so I don't understand why the sudden delay. Then I said to him what he said to my friend, and he told me to "calm down", when he's the one who's raising his voice at me. First of all, if you can't treat your customer with respect, then you're not worth my business. So my friends and I left and went somewhere else. Secondly, the floors were so slippery, that I was terrified to slip, fall, and hurt myself. I gave that place another try, because on my first visit, the food were all so salty. Sorry @Max's Restaurant, you've lost four customers in one day.
