But good lord, the place is absolutely FILTHY!!! The carpet has 50 years of grease and dirt and grime in it and you can not even tell what colour it used to be. I tried the Greek omelette and my friend had the chicken salad. My friend wasn't a huge fan of his overly creamy salad but I enjoyed my super cheesy omelette. I think they gave me too many fries though. The fries were not salty enough and felt more vinegar-y. The coleslaw was not creamy and was also more vinegar-y. It's the homestyleness of this place that made me love it. Bare-bones, local diner with no hormones/additives/whatchamacallit added to the food. It was extremely busy on a Sunday lunch, despite the fact they were closing at 2pm. I had the breakfast classic, which came with 2 eggs and a choice of bacon, sausages, or ham (I went with sausages), fries or hash browns (hash browns all the way), coleslaw, and bread (rye). I really loved the food, and for $9 it completely filled me up. My friends had burgers and loved every little bit of it. If I had breakfast earlier in the day I probably would've went for the burger too, but I was definitely satisfied with my meal too. Service was great too, and there were definitely many regulars there judging by how the employees knew several of them. We were in Winnipeg a couple of weekends ago and my cousin said we had to try this staple of Winnipeg dining. We were hungover and in need of some greasy sustenance, so this seemed to be just the place on a cool and rainy start to June. Under my cousins urging, I had the chili burger... a large burger buried under a pile of chili. Unfortunately I did not find the chili or the burger itself overly flavorful. The fries were good, and the coleslaw was absolutely fantastic... strangely the highlight of my meal. I can't remember what my cousin ordered (damn fuzzy hangover brain) but my buddy Jay had the fried chicken and spaghetti which was incredible. The fried chicken was perfect and the spaghetti, smothered in what I assume was the same chili as my burger had, wasn't half bad either. I wish I had ordered his meal as it came with that amazing coleslaw as well. The portions here are massive, you won't go away hungry. The only real complaint I had was it took forever to get our meals... I assume because of the fried chicken? We were damn hungry which added to our impatience obviously, but it took a really long time in relation to how slow they were. Our waitress was awesome though I must add. This place was good overall, not great, and something was probably lost in translation for me not being a Winnipeg native and growing up with this. I've only been here once but I was absolutely impressed with what I had which was the fried chicken. This place looks like you took a time machine back to the 50's or something which was really cool because we do not have anything like this in Toronto at all. I was with 2 other people and 2 of us ordered the chicken and we were forewarned that it was going to take up to 45 minutes to complete the order but we waited for it. One of the people I was with had been there before and had the chicken which convinced me to get it while the other person and myself were there for the first time. I was told the reason it take so long for the chicken orders is that most likely there is already chicken cooking in the pressure cooker already so we would have to wait for that order finish before they can even start the next one. Understandably it's good that they at least tell you it will be a while so you know what to expect. I had also ordered chili on my fries. It's not the type of chili I'm used to but it was good, mostly beef, no beans and not very spicy. The chicken when it finally came to the table was absolutely steaming hot. The skin was crispy and golden brown while the meat was tender and juicy. It was one of the best fried chickens I think I've ever had save perhaps the Apple Barn in Sevierville, Tennessee. I've heard the burgers were good and that they have some real large six patty deal but I was more interested in the chicken because another co-worker swore by it. I had it and was not disappointed in the least. We unfortunately did not have a good dining experience at this place. I ordered the cheeseburger plate and the burger was so well done and dry ,it was absolutely horrible. Very poor waitress, once she dropped off the food she never came around again to refill our beverages nor ask how our meal was , she was too busy yapping with her boyfriend and rubbing his back, it was gross. I left at least half the burger on the plate but the coleslaw was good and tasty. Hubby had breakfast and he said it was good. I had high hopes for this place but I think we definitely would try it again, maybe we just came on an off day. We are always willing to give a restaurant a second try. read more

Went to try the fried chicken because I was told they had some of the best in Winnipeg. I have to agree the chicken came fresh cooked, hot, and juicy! I definitely recommend if your a fan of fried chicken it was awesome. I ordered it with spaghetti and fries, I never had that combo before it was delicious. We ate there tonite November 23, 2019. Had the chicken with fries, coleslaw, small taste of chili and gravy. My friend had a regular burger and poutine fries. So, saw that show "You gotta eat here" by fluke so wanted to go to the Top . So disappointing. Chicken basic, not crispy and not great seasoning and crappy cold as brought a piece home. Fries yummy and coleslaw enjoyable. Her poutine went back potatoes not like mine crispy but raw and white looking and were replaced without issue. Her hamburger bun cold and unappealing. She ate half the burger and half the poutine. The place very busy. From our meal we don't get the rave reviews. The chili we both agreed tasted like it was from a can or no better than dog food. Lotto burger platter has been a favourite of mine for years. When I dine there with my father he orders the fried chicken dinner and he insists it is the best in Winnipeg- despite the extended wait for our food to arrive because of its longer cooking time. Slowly but surely, I am going to make my way through all the famous burger joints in the city. Next stop was the Red Top in St. Boniface, a Greek family restaurant. The interior is definitely a blast from the past, I don't think much has changed since they first opened in 1960. But the nostalgic diner feel gives this place its charm. It almost reminds me of the interior of Kelekis but there's more natural sunlight in this place. I liked the red diner booths that fill up this place but if you have some larger built people, it will likely be a bit uncomfortable to squeeze 2 people per side. A little ironic that a diner joint would have such tight seating but I guess people were much smaller back in the day. I'm petite and I wouldn't want anyone much larger than me sitting next to me in those booths or else I'd feel claustorphobic! I've heard good things about their burgers so that's exactly what I ordered - the "cheez-burger plate" ($7.39) - the burger was topped with mustard, chili sauce, onions, dill pickle and enclosed in a sesame bun. Sides included crispy fries and coleslaw. I was impressed that the patty filled up the entire area of the bun. The chili wasn't very flavourful, it was just there and didn't enhance the burger for me. But at least the chili didn't drench my burger as I could eat the entire thing without it falling apart. The burger patty itself was good but it lacked the depth I expected, meaning it didn't have the distinct crunch and grill top taste on the outer layer and juiciness inside. The burgers are made from fresh lean ground beef and made daily. I will agree that the burger is definitely leaner than other burgers I've tried in the city because I finished my cheeseburger and didn't get that "why did I eat that?" feeling. The fries are crispy but they are not salted (like most places) so you will have to adjust accordingly. The coleslaw is a vinegar based dressing, which I prefer over the creamy ones. This one had a lot of tang which makes for a nice contrast to the heavier items on the plate. My boyfriend really enjoyed his double cheeseburger plate ($7.99) and chocolate milkshake ($4.29). Funny how an extra burger patty is only 60 cents more when you compare his order to mine! Good value! I took a few sips of the chocolate milkshake and thought it was pretty good without being overly thick. Service was pretty fast and cordial. I'll definitely come back to try their generous gyro plates ($10.25) that comes with fries and Greek salad - it was the by far one of the most popular items ordered at lunch. Had the monster burger. Was delicious for a super meaty food challenge type order (six patty burger on a mini sub bun). I personally love lots of meat and cheese and chilli sauce so this burger was my favourite to date! Was stuffed and happy! Girlfriend had lots o burger and poutine. I tried the poutine and it was kinda meh because I have to have curds for my poutine but the gravy was tasty enough and fresh diner fries are always good. The strawberry milkshake was suuuuuper good. All in all with tip it was a 50 dollar touch so the price was decent considering the monstrosity I ordered. One of my regular places to dine. The burgers are all outstanding compared to the fast food burger we have all been conditioned to think of when we think hamburger. My personal favourite is the Greek Burger, with its tzatziki and feta on a spiced patty with lettuce and tomato. Also recommeded is the Lot-O Burger, which lives up to its name -- you'll truly be stuffed when you're done. The service is very good, with orders usually taking only a maximum of 12 minutes on the average -- plenty of time to read the newspaper or have an average conversation. The wait staff are more often than not cheery and pleasant. Note to DineoutGal A.: the booths in the diningroom area to the left as you go in are roomier than the ones you sat in on the right. At least this is one place where you can sit and enjoy hamburgers of this calibre -- most Winnipeg places that sell them are take-out only. read more
