We planned on eating at another restaurant during our day trip to Deland, but it was closed. Checked out Chica's on Yelp and it was a short walk (right downtown) so we decided to give it a try. It's in a lovely old building which apparently also houses a hotel - gorgeous wooden floors and a warm, inviting interior. Parking lot next to restaurant was full but there is free parking downtown just a block away. It was crowded at lunchtime and they had some big groups, so we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. Our server (Maria?) was wonderful. I started with a caipirinha - not often on cocktail menus and it's one of my favorites - it was delicious!). Hubs and I both had the chicken soup and it was amazing - I would come back just for that. Hubs had the pollo à la plancha - the chicken was ok but the black beans were definitely the star! The tostones as a side were stone cold and very tough to chew - it was sadly our least favorite thing (and I LOVE tostones!). I had a beef empanada and a chicken empanada - they were ok.

The service was horrible. The food barely had any seasoning, but their soup was actually really good. Prices does not match the flavor. The place did look beautiful. I wish the food matched that.

    BREAKFAST FRITA

I had just completed my first 5K (fueled by a peanut butter cookie and a protein shake) and was looking for looking for a savory breakfast. I saw that this restaurant was nearby and wanted to give it a try. As soon as you pull into the parking lot, you smell the aroma of delicious food. I will say that every employee that I came across, smiled and said good morning so the customer service was great. I ordered the breakfast Frita which is basically a breakfast burger and some homemade fries. Those homemade fries were some of the best potatoes that I have ever had. Seasoning was perfect. They were crunchy on the outside but nice and soft on the inside. I literally did not need ketchup salt pepper. Nothing just the potatoes. As far as the breakfast burger for me, it wasn't that great. The flavor was there however, my bread felt a bit stale, the fried egg was a bit overcooked so you didn't get that creamy yolk to help give moisture to the beef. Unfortunately, the beef needed that moisture because it was overcooked (they did not ask how I wanted it prepared nor did I tell them). Now, although my breakfast burger wasn't the best, I would still go to the restaurant and try some of their other foods because again the aroma was amazing. So I know other things are good.

Maravilloso! What a wonderful place to eat. The decor is wonderful and the staff is very friendly. But most importantly the food is authentic and fantastic. Having left Miami almost 10yrs ago I am also craving good Cuba cuisine and Chicas hits the bullseye. The cocktails are very well made as well. I highly recommend the El Viejito Old Fashioned

I love the food here! The arroz con pollo is so moist and delicious! Perfect filling meal as you get a salad, Maduros and an avocado. My wife's chicken on a plancha was too hard to eat. The black beans and rice were perfect. Service was great and place is very clean. This our go to spot in Deland!

If you ask my husband, this should be 5 stars. I will say his chicken, Chica's Chicken dish, was amazing. I'm trying to eat healthier (big mistake) so I had the Tropical Salad. The avocado was not ripe, but the plantain chips were delicious. Maybe I was full from the empanadas we had as an appetizer, but I was under whelmed. Their flan was perfectly made. We got a Cuban sandwich to go. It tasted good but was incredibly salty. The restaurant itself is very beautiful inside. Quite a bit of lovely artwork. I think its a great place for a date night with cocktails. The mango mojito was sublime. My only complaint is the chair situation. In the room we sat in somehow the chairs hit me right in the hip bones. I wished we lived closer, I woukd definitely come back to try more items.

We came for brunch and really enjoyed our food choices. The churrasco was cooked to perfection and the mojo on top made it more perfect. I love that they have mimosa carafes available however wish it would be a bit more bubbly as the ones we got tasted more like straight juice. Service was excellent we will definitely be back.

Food was good, we were a party of 10 celebrating a birthday. Really liked the live music but waiter was nee and kept on messing up the orders.

Service is quick and friendly. It's a storefront restaurant, in a very old building. Decor is eclectic, sort of a mashup of different genres. Tried banderillas, which are artfully crafted skewers with chicken, cheese, zucchini , and roasted peppers, with some mango vinaigrette to dress. These are as nice to look at as they are to eat. Great starter, perfect for sharing. Also tried the Jack Fruit Quesadilla. An unusual combo - quesadilla stuffed with cheese and jack fruit marinated with guajillo sauce and then topped with pineapple, almonds, apples, and cilantro. Very unique taste, and delicious! The outside seats were full and the sidewalk packed with spectators. The dining was empty so we had our pick of seats. We were greeted promptly and our server gave us plenty of time to review the menu while catching up. Our drinks were served quickly-I got a glass of sangria which was crisp and light, not overly sweet. The food was freshly prepared and served hot. Everyone raved about their choices. I got the vegan enchiladas and my husband got the nachos. Both were delicious. The enchiladas were topped with fresh shredded cabbage and tomatoes which gave enchiladas a nice crunch in each bite. The nachos were light-not overly drenched in cheese or cheese sauce like you find in most pubs nowadays. You could taste the vegetables. The dining room is cozy with a good view of the street. Everyone we spoke with was friendly and welcoming. If our vacation plans bring us to Deland again, I know they will include a visit to De laVega.

We arrived early for our reservation and grabbed seats at the bar. We were immediately greeted with a smile and extensive menus! This menu is so vast, it reminded me of the Cheesecake Factory in the best way. There is truly something for everyone here. Carnivores, vegetarians, vegans, you name it. I opted for the vegetarian "Vegetable Bowl" and my husband went for the fajitas after another guest recommended both items. The cilantro sauce and the caramelized plantains were my favorite part of the Vegetable bowl, and my husband loved every bite of his fajitas. Everything was hot, fresh, and it arrived quickly. There are a number of different dining areas here and we loved sitting in the back dining room in a comfy booth. Even though other diners were present, it felt like we had the place to ourselves because the tables are spaced far enough apart that there's plenty of personal space. No need to shout to hear your dining companions. All in all we loved Parva and look forward to coming back on our next trip to Deland.

At Lelo's we got 4 FULL plates with 4 drinks that totaled near $50. The food quality was very good. I went with yellow rice, red beans, and sweet plantains. My wife ordered the chicken combo with a side of yellow rice and yuca (her first time trying yuca!). The lady helping us (pretty sure it was the owner) was incredibly friendly and patient, guiding us through the menu like old friends. We paid, grabbed a table, and dug in. My wife took one bite of the rotisserie chicken and declared it the best she's had in ages--juicy, perfectly seasoned, and falling off the bone. No surprise there; we spotted those massive rotisserie ovens spinning away, so chicken is clearly their specialty! She then tried the yuca (boiled and crispy-edged, I assume) and loved it--said it was buttery and addictive. Her yellow rice had tasty chunks of different meats mixed in, and she couldn't stop raving about the flavor. I mixed my yellow rice (a different style from hers) with the red beans on the plate--pure comfort food heaven, rich, savory, and perfectly balanced. The sweet plantains? Outstanding. Caramelized just right, sweet but not overpowering, soft inside with that ideal crisp edge. Every bite was perfection. The place had a great vibe too--clean bathrooms, lively Spanish beats playing, and a casual, welcoming atmosphere that made us feel right at home. We're already planning our next visit to try more dishes (that mofongo and rotisserie chicken platter are calling our names!). If you're craving authentic Puerto Rican BBQ and sides done right, Lelo's is a must-stop. Highly recommend--5 stars all the way!
