The absolute best Cuban food anywhere. I have been to many Cuban restaurants from Orlando to Miami and Chicas Cuban Cafe in Deland is the absolute best. This place is really classy and authentic and isn't your everyday ordinary Cuban restaurant. This place is great if you just want to grab a sandwich or you want to have a special date night and relax while enjoying a meal you won't forget. Tey have indoor and outdoor dining, and I noticed the tabletops are made from high end Quartz with gold metal flake and the decor and lighting sets the mood for an incredible dining experience. We had friends visiting and decided to come in on a Saturday evening without reservations. We were told there would be a short wait, which was completely fine, and we didn't mind spending about 20 minutes upstairs on the rooftop enjoying the DJ and atmosphere. Once seated, we were placed in the second dining room and ordered drinks, four appetizers, and our entrees. Unfortunately, from the start, the table was not properly set. We had no silverware, no napkins, no side plates for sharing appetizers, no coasters, and really no table settings at all. For a party ordering multiple appetizers and drinks, this immediately made service feel disorganized and inattentive. The issue became even worse when our entrees arrived and, almost immediately after, staff started stacking chairs around us at approximately 9:12 p.m. We had only been seated maybe 15-20 minutes earlier, so as a party of five on a Saturday night, we certainly did not expect the restaurant to begin visibly shutting down while we were just starting our meal. What made it even more frustrating was that these tables were already available when we first walked in, despite being told there would be a wait. Since we were entertaining guests, we thought this would be a great opportunity to show off the rooftop, which is such a great feature for a small town like DeLand and has so much potential. Instead, the experience became embarrassing and disappointing. Having staff stack chairs and place them on tabletops in the middle of our meal felt incredibly rude and unprofessional. It created an uncomfortable atmosphere and made us feel rushed out rather than welcomed. When we asked to speak with a manager, the response we received was that "the servers have to go home." That explanation was unacceptable. Paying customers should never be made to feel like an inconvenience, especially while actively dining. With my own background in restaurant service and management, I found both the handling of the situation and the manager's response to be extremely poor. As a DeLand local, this was especially disappointing because this restaurant has been making improvements and adding entertainment, which we were excited to support. Unfortunately, the poor service and lack of professionalism completely overshadowed what should have been an enjoyable night out. read more

We planned on eating at another restaurant during our day trip to Deland, but it was closed. Checked out Chica's on Yelp and it was a short walk (right downtown) so we decided to give it a try. It's in a lovely old building which apparently also houses a hotel - gorgeous wooden floors and a warm, inviting interior. Parking lot next to restaurant was full but there is free parking downtown just a block away. It was crowded at lunchtime and they had some big groups, so we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. Our server (Maria?) was wonderful. I started with a caipirinha - not often on cocktail menus and it's one of my favorites - it was delicious!). Hubs and I both had the chicken soup and it was amazing - I would come back just for that. Hubs had the pollo à la plancha - the chicken was ok but the black beans were definitely the star! I had just completed my first 5K (fueled by a peanut butter cookie and a protein shake) and was looking for looking for a savory breakfast. I saw that this restaurant was nearby and wanted to give it a try. As soon as you pull into the parking lot, you smell the aroma of delicious food. I will say that every employee that I came across, smiled and said good morning so the customer service was great. I ordered the breakfast Frita which is basically a breakfast burger and some homemade fries. Those homemade fries were some of the best potatoes that I have ever had. Seasoning was perfect. They were crunchy on the outside but nice and soft on the inside. I literally did not need ketchup salt pepper. Nothing just the potatoes. As far as the breakfast burger for me, it wasn't that great. The flavor was there however, my bread felt a bit stale, the fried egg was a bit overcooked so you didn't get that creamy yolk to help give moisture to the beef. Unfortunately, the beef needed that moisture because it was overcooked (they did not ask how I wanted it prepared nor did I tell them). Now, although my breakfast burger wasn't the best, I would still go to the restaurant and try some of their other foods because again the aroma was amazing. We stopped here while visiting DeLand from out of town. It's in a cute older hotel. To start, the service was really friendly. We ordered beef and chicken empanadas and they were fantastic, tasted homemade. We had the brunch churrasco, which was tasty and tender. The cafe con leche was delicious as was the pan con tortilla. Millie is the bombdiggity!! Went to lunch on Thursday...party of 4. Food was top notch!!!! Ordered app of spinach/cheese empanadas. Runner girl confirmed one as Spinach, but couldn't attest for second one. Well it was beef.....wife is vegetarian. Told Millie. She saw to it that our empanada was replaced and that a take home cheese pastry was 'on the house". I will return because of the outstanding food quality, but mainly Millie. We came here for a birthday celebration and everyone was blow away by the food. Our group had ribs (I know what you're thinking but they were outstanding) and I had the ropa vieja (first time trying this dish) and we will definitely be coming back. The only negative was that our server was very argumentive and pretended numerous times like he couldn't understand what we ordered. Someone ordered a Cortadito and he acted like he had a brain malfunction, because they didn't roll the "R", then proceeded to correct their grammar and tell them how he pronounces it; All while poorly stifling his laughter. If you ask my husband, this should be 5 stars. I will say his chicken, Chica's Chicken dish, was amazing. I'm trying to eat healthier (big mistake) so I had the Tropical Salad. The avocado was not ripe, but the plantain chips were delicious. Maybe I was full from the empanadas we had as an appetizer, but I was under whelmed. Their flan was perfectly made. We got a Cuban sandwich to go. It tasted good but was incredibly salty. The restaurant itself is very beautiful inside. Quite a bit of lovely artwork. I think its a great place for a date night with cocktails. The mango mojito was sublime. My only complaint is the chair situation. In the room we sat in somehow the chairs hit me right in the hip bones. I wished we lived closer, I woukd definitely come back to try more items. read more

We've been coming to Chicas Cuban Cafe in DeLand for years. I've brought family, friends, and even customers here because the food has consistently been great and the service has always been top-notch. Unfortunately, tonight's experience left us genuinely disappointed. We had 4 adults and 2 children, split between two checks. The food was great as usual, and our waitress was very nice. However, when the checks arrived, we discovered that a 24% gratuity had automatically been added because we were a party of six. What was most frustrating was that there was no clear warning or discussion about the 24% charge before we ordered. We were told about it as the bills were being handed to us. I completely understand restaurants adding gratuity for larger parties, and I have no issue with fairly compensating good service. But 24% automatically added to a table of six--including two children--is excessive, especially without making it very clear to the customer beforehand. When we questioned it, the manager's response was essentially that this is normal and an industry standard. That was surprising. I've entertained customers here and brought groups here for years and have never encountered a mandatory 24% gratuity at this restaurant. The unfortunate part is that we genuinely like Chicas. The food was good tonight, just as it has been for years. But policies like this make what has always felt like a great local, family-friendly restaurant considerably less affordable for families. A 24% mandatory charge turned dinner for six into a bill that felt much closer to dinner for nine. The food still deserves praise, but families and groups of six or more should be aware of the automatic 24% gratuity before dining here. I sincerely hope management reconsiders either the percentage or, at minimum, how clearly this policy is communicated before customers order. read more

This was my second time coming here. I'm surprised I haven't wrote about it the first time because it was such a memorable one. The first time we went here, it was for dinner on a Saturday night. We got the ropa vieja, bistec and the Habana sampler. Paired with a couple of beers and Long Islands. Food was so delicious and truly flavorful. Drinks were strong. Service was amazing. Second time was last night with family. I wish I got our server's name - but he was young, curly hair with a cute manicure. He was very attentive to our table and made sure we were taken care of. We shared the ropa vieja (again), bistec empanizado and a side of yuca. Paired with a couple of cockails and beers. What we appreciated was the chef came out to make sure our food was just right. I ordered through uber eats while I was at a hair appointment and was pleasantly surprised. The white rice and black beans was delicious and authentic. I also looooved the plantains. The steak was a little soggy in my opinion. It was drenched in oil, but once I got home, soaked up the oil with a napkin and put it in the air fryer it was 10000x better. Service was quick. I love that they have mimosa carafes available however wish it would be a bit more bubbly as the ones we got tasted more like straight juice. Chicas used to be our favorite Cuban restaurant in DeLand. After Mother's Day, we won't be back. I called in an order at 6:15 PM. My husband picked it up -- parking was wide open. We got home missing three items: yellow rice, maduros, and white rice. I called back. After 11 minutes on hold, the manager picked up. He never gave his name. His first response was accusing us of eating the food to get money back. I offered to bring it back. He said no. I asked for a refund. He said no. Then he walked away from the phone. First of all as cuban I am very picky with my "cuban" food. The service was great. Zeke was super helpful and the food was very flavorful. My 3 stars is for the following the cuban egg rolls although super tasty $12 for 2 small egg rolls I found overpriced. The Moro black bean with rice was not good, and menu items have been changed but no updated menus available. Makes it hard to decide on something and the be told "sorry the items is now different, no longer served with ..." Everything else was very delicious. We don't live in the area but always enjoy trying new places when traveling through town. They do have music and a bar the ambiance was nice for a Sunday afternoon. read more

My first visit to this restaurant was a delightful experience. All the dishes were enjoyed by the entire party. Each of us had a different take on our meals, presentation, and atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed the textures and flavors of each dish. As you can see by the pictures, the presentation Was very well done and I love the cutting board as "plates". The empanadas were a hit ! I had the mojo pork and it was nice and juicy flavored and well cooked with a nice sear. Also the yellow rice was quite tasty and recommended by the server and I'm glad I did. There is enough to take home and enough options on the menu to come back and try other Cuban dishes. Our server Juan was very patient and absolutely professional with us, he ensured that we enjoyed our experience. They have a nice seating outside and it was a nice afternoon so the patio was just fine. I did not get to see what it looked like on the inside, but it is a nice size restaurant. I did see a number of customers coming in so apparently they are doing something right! If you are in the area, I would recommend you try this with family, or a nice date night out. read more

Had some time to pass in such a historic site to experience, and was lunch time. Took the trust of my fellow Goggle peers suggestions, and gave Chicas a try. 1st thought, a bit confusing since it's a part of the Artisian Hotel. Once I figured out where the "Official" entrance to the restaurant was, upon entry, I was immediately greeted with a welcome ambiance of a Cuban feel & sense of love here. Nice, very nice I started with the Empanadas For 2, when actually, it was adequate for ONE, really. As you can see in the pictures & the video clips, it was very tasty, crisp outside, gooey filled centers with beef, and chicken in the other. I DESTROYED it, thank you! For lunch, I ordered 1/2 Cuban Sandwich, with Rice & Beans. Unfortunately, again, I savorly destroyed it, and completely forgot to captured the dish first. Ooops..... Intention was to end the lunch with the Cuban Flan, with a double shot of expresso, unfortunately, gonna have to save that as the starter for the next visit. And yes, there WILL be a next visit!! Place was super busy with Stetson move in but once seated taken great care of. Food was quick tasty and very authentic. Chicken soup was delish and served with rice and the loaded tostones were amazing. Just wished more meat less beans. Totally enjoyed our lunch here! We were greeted warmly and able to be seated right away. It wasn't too hot, so we enjoyed being under the covered patio with it's ceiling fans and strung light bulbs. What a relaxed vibe! After perusing the varied & interesting menu and additional page of "specials", we settled on the Mojo Roast Pork with sides of Avocado and salad (low carb was the goal) and the Medianoche with fries and plantain. This was the first time my wife and I been at Chicas Cuban Restaurant and we are glad we went. First when we entered we were sat right away. There was outdoor seating that looked popular been we decided to seat indoors. Our waitress came to our table immediately with two glasses of ice water and offered drinks. Since we planned on completing our meal with Cuban coffee and a pastry we decided just to have water. My wife ordered the Cuban roasted pork which came with black beans and white rice, yuca and plantains. I had Churrasco and black beans and rice. Both of us enjoyed our meals. After our meal we had a homemade pastry and Cuban coffee. We really enjoyed combining mg here and the service and food was excellent. Will definitely return. read more
