So my son and I came here for brunch on the way to pick up a car that I bought. I read the reviews and couldn't wait to get here. We got an Uber from the airport and walked in. We sat down and was greeted very shortly after. We were thinking breakfast. I ordered a coffee that came out fairly quickly. It was a coffee with milk that was pretty good. Then it was suggested we get either a breakfast bowl or a sandwich we went sandwich and all I can say is you better be hungry. This is one massive and tasty sandwich. The place is small but clean. Hubby & I came after visiting Blue Springs State Park. Had an amazing time with the friendly, welcoming owner. Read reviews from Yelp that were all 5 stars and were skeptical, but we loved it! The owner was the sweetest and made us feel like we were guests in her house. She is Dominican Republican and her husband who is the chef is Puerto Rican. She asked us how we found the place and she was so pleased to see they had 5 stars on Yelp. She told us about her daughter and asked about us, she was really like a beloved Aunt. We'd never had puerto rican food and with hubby's onion allergies, worried he wouldn't be able to eat here. But we told the owner and she assured us no onions in the sancocho (the soup). So far hubby's tummy is ok, so glad he got to try it! The fried chicken + rice reminded me of how my mom cooks the chk, Burmese style, but we add a tiny bit of oil, salt and lemon into the rice too. The fried plantains were not as sweet as I expected but hubby liked it. We also had flan, forgot to take photo, slice was small but yum. The texture is a bit more cake-like than pudding-like which is what I'm used to, perhaps that's puerto rican style? The beans were also delicious. Our Spanish wasn't great (but she was very pleased we tried) and her English wasn't the best, so we pretty much just told her to bring whatever she wanted as long as no onions lol. So I'm not sure about the price break down, but for 2 sancochos, 2 rice+ chk, fried plantains, beans, soda, flan, we were charged $28 total + tipped 30%. Huge portions, so we had enough for 1.5-2 meals. I was full after our late lunch and didn't feel hungry the rest of the day. So sad we're visiting Orlando and her shop is 1-1.5hr away. Definitely visit before/after you see the manatees at Blue Springs State Park! It's a hole in the wall but amazing food and amazing company that you'll love if you're a Go with the Flow kind of person who loves to try new foods and support local mom and pop shops. The empanadas are absolutely STUFFED full of meat and cheese, the sauce they come with is nice as well. The maduros are cooked perfectly and amazing! Don't not let this humble looking establishment deter you. It's so worth it! I Passed by this hole in the wall so many times and I finally got to try it today. The owner is a one woman show, making the most filling and delicious food. She is so kind, full of energy and obviously loves what she does, it shows in her cooking. The staff is great and they have great food. We saw the place on yelp and had to search to find it. This is a small place in a strip mall. They have a few tables and counter service. The menu is small but they have specials every day. I think they were surprised to see us, this is Dominican food and we don't look Dominican , they asked us "how did you find us". This place is far from fancy and seems to cater to a local crowd. The prices were good, food great and authentic. The staff was very nice and really made sure we were happy. Right now, they have a limited items due to the virus. But whatever you choose will be great. You can tell they make the food with love. I originally wanted bacalao con viandas (codfish with root vegetables), but they were not offering the dish at the moment. If you want something they are not currently offering, you can call ahead and they will prepare it for you. I ended up getting pernil and rice with cilantro. Yummy! The food was amazing. Just want to say that this place is one of the most mom and pop's restaurants I've ever been to. The chef/owner don't speak English well but I tell you, she is the most accommodating chef I've ever met. My first visit she gave me couple other meat just to try. My family were enjoying a trip to blue springs park over the weekend and we're starving after waking about 8 miles. I looked up a well rated spot in the area and Un Sueno Cafe was at the top of the list. Our daughter wanted a burger from sonic so she wasn't happy when we decided to try something different. The restaurant is small and in a small shopping center that is a little hard to see from the road so we drove by it the first time. Upon entering we saw a couple of older gentlemen enjoying their lunch and another lady picking up a to-go order. Everyone spoke Spanish, so while I didn't know what everyone was saying, you could tell everyone was happy and enjoying themselves. The waitress brought us a few menus and the three of us looked them over. My daughter asked what everything was because a lot of the menu was also in Spanish. I explained everything I could while the lady who was picking up her to-go order stopped on her way out, noticing our mild confusion, and said "Don't worry. Everything here is good. You're going to love it." I felt good about being there anyway but her demeanor was so pleasant and she had such and earnest smile that I think it may have settled my daughter a little bit. We ordered a variety of things, 2 each of the 3 types of empanadas (chicken, beef, and pork), a Tripleta sandwich, fried plantains, and an order or French fries. Our waitress, who also turned out to be the cook, was super pleasant and patient while taking our order. She helped explain items on the menu and offered us some suggestions. While we waited on our meal the older gentlemen finished their lunch and boisterously offered us blessings on the new year! They were so happy and I could tell they enjoyed their meal quite thoroughly. It was relatively quiet in the restaurant at this point and I could see the waitress/cook diligently preparing our meal in the kitchen. It quickly became obvious she was preparing everything by hand and with the same care my mother did when preparing meals for my own family. It felt that way there. While we'd never stepped foot in this restaurant before we did indeed feel like family. If you've read this far I think it's probably pretty clear how we feel about the quality of our meal. But in case you're still curious...it was fantastic! I took the first bite of the chicken empanada and I was floored. My wife felt the same and we took turns amazed by our expressions as we tried each of the different offerings. Our daughter was equally amazed when she first bit into her tripleta. I think her desire for Sonic flew out the window as she quickly immersed herself in devouring her sandwich. We had to interrupt her just to keep her from eating the whole thing as we wanted to try some ourselves. We sampled all the items in our meal and ranked each one based on our own scale. My wife and I both ranked the chicken empanadas as the best and the others a close tie for next in line. Our daughter preferred the beef empanadas, then the tripleta, and then the chicken and pork empanadas. The plantains were good and the fresh hand cut fries were as good as those from 5 guys but they weren't the star of the meal. I could eat the tripleta and any of the empanadas all day every day. They are that good. After gorging ourselves on a delightful lunch we chatted with our server for a bit and thanked her for an extraordinarily memorable meal. It was our genuine pleasure to share time with her and to feel her passion and love for those she serves. We are planning on camping at blue springs in a couple months and I'm anxiously looking forward to another visit to Un Sueno Cafe. I hope you do the same. read more
