    Deck before reno
    Lisa N.

After speaking with 4 other remodeling firms, I chose Chicago Custom Remodeling to re-build my rooftop decks. They were the only ones who provided a feasible solution for the pitch problems on my roof. Other contractors simply wanted to add more roofing material, which failed in the past. The scope of the work included roof repairs, installation of new drains, building new upper and lower decks from a high-quality composite material, built custom storage boxes, refinishing outdoor metal staircase and railings, installing recessed lighting, rebuilding staircase, and complete repair of front door - new weatherstripping, threshold, painting of front door and trim inside and out. They were willing to do a few smaller repairs throughout the house as well. Al Zamm is the owner and always professional, on time, courteous and willing to complete the job above the customer's expectations. He and his team are trustworthy; in fact, I gave them my keys to complete the job while I was out of the country. The quality of the work is outstanding. If you're looking for a handyman, CCR isn't for you. But if you want excellent customer relations, great advice on options and are willing to pay for a superior job (they're competitive), you'll be glad you selected them.

Al and his team did a beautiful job remodeling the only bathroom in our 100 year old house. It is stunning! Our pink and green1970s bathroom needed to be gutted. Al replaced all the fixtures, fixed a leak we didn't know we had, added ceiling lighting and a bathroom fan (how was this never installed in the first place?), and did an ENORMOUS amount of tile work that included white and black hex tile with a custom border, and chair rail height subway tile walls. Al was very reasonably priced compared to other quotes we received. The project went a little over schedule, only because of delays in supply orders and some last minute upgrades I made. I appreciated That Al would send me frequent updates and pictures of work being done. Everything went very smoothly, and I will definitely contact him in the future when we need more work done. Thanks Al :)

Al did an awesome job installing our backsplash in our kitchen. He was easy to communicate with to set up a time to come and get the work done and when it was time to work he cranked it out all in one day. I would definitely recommend him.

Al remodeled our kitchen last summer and he was incredible. He is hard working, straightforward, honest and personable. He wanted us to be completely happy with everything and when he made suggestions to further improve our remodel he respected my partner's strict adherence to our budget. He also came months after the remodel was done to show my partner how to drain the radiators in our entire home (which took a few hours). Not only that, earlier this spring the condo we rent out in the city flooded so we called Al. That very same evening he gutted and protected the condo from further water damage/molding and ultimately remodeled the condo in less than a month to help us not lose/further inconvenience our renters. He also assisted with insurance issues and he's gone above and beyond for us in every capacity. We trust him 110% and will continue to seek him out for any remodeling needs we have! We also recommend him to all our neighbors and friends doing work!

Al and his team were awesome to work with! We love the work they did! We had several people look at the job and none of them seemed to want the job. Al took it on and we are very pleased with what he did!!

Summary: Soma Tile (Lucas) is a partner through the process and his team is comprised of skilled…read moreand courteous professionals. I would not hesitate in referring them to anyone looking for bath and tile work!! Preface: Let me start this tale with some background. This project was not an exciting "Lets update our 20 year old bathroom and make it stylish and pretty". Instead the project started due to an undetected leak, the stress that comes from random water leaking in random places, and was filled with questions and concerns. Countless others "assured" me that this was a plumbing issue or just due to some neglected maintenance on a 5 year old new-install shower - and then wanted to blast holes everywhere to "find" the leak. At the same time, I did not want to rip apart a shower to then find out it might be plumbing and now a full on repair. I felt overwhelmed in making the wrong choice and doing 2 projects chasing my tail. Lucas walked me through all the typical scenarios that he has seen, leaning on the most probably is a structural fail of the shower system and then did a methodical exploration. A couple hours later and a minimal demo, he confirmed that it was in fact not plumbing related and was def. a failure of the shower system -- and walked me through what it would take. Once his team was onsite, they were focused - creating a whole "clean room" at the entry to the bathroom. 1 day demo, 1 day water-proof, 2 days tile - all while providing the proper time for dry-out and leak testing between steps. Lucas is a perfectionist, being critical on the most minor details -- which to someone that also strives for this level, but has no idea what they are looking for, was very much appreciated. Additionally, he has instilled this value in his team - that are true craftsman with their skill. Each step of the process was walked through, discussed, and made sure we understood the task, goal, and expectations. This is why I say Lucas/Soma Tile was a true partner in this project, as it wasn't a fun project -- it was an overwhelming stressful start where Soma Tile helped take some of the burden and concerns off our shoulders and work it through with their own expertise, experience, and dedication - ensuring every step was executed with precision. Soma Tile knows their craft - Lucas is a partner, his team are craftsman. Huge Thanks to Lucas, Jesus, and Miguel -- not to forget Jose who magically appeared on the last day to leave the place spotless.

Lucas patiently reviewed design options with me and provided insightful guidance throughout the install. The attention to the smallest detail, combined with the use of a laser to ensure straight lines of tiles was impressive. No detail was overlooked! The color selection of grout was carefully coordinated with the tile. The workmanship is OUTSTANDING! The team demonstrated the same quality standards as they grouted and cleaned the tile repeatedly. Upon completion, Lucas, and his team cleaned the bathroom, and their work area. Soma tile was on time and a pleasure to work with! They truly are craftsman and take pride in their work. I would strongly recommend Lucas and his team.

You know, the ones where they show the before and after of a kitchen, bathroom, etc.? It always looks so easy on TV, and they miraculously get everything done within the hour! Real life ain't like that, folks. Every home improvement task we have attempted has taken way longer than we thought, and cost way more money than we had planned. Sure, you still save over hiring a contractor, and there is that feeling of satisfaction when all is said and done. But realistically, those HGTV shows edit out a lot of blood, sweat and tears. And cost overruns. Anyhow, I'm getting off subject. We look to save money on materials whenever we do home improvement. Plus, I try to support anybody other than the local Big Box stores. You know, the ones that seem to have a monopoly on EVERYTHING home related. (I'm talking to you Home Depot) They usually have lousy customer service, to boot. Well APEX flooring is just the opposite of those big box stores. Easily located off the Dan Ryan in Pilsen, they have a private parking lot attached. The store is small and easily navigated, but packed with a large assortment of floor coverings, including ceramic, wood, cork, and others. Lowell, the owner, is pleasant, friendly and a joy to deal with; he's also extremely knowledgeable concerning flooring and it's installation. I found their prices to be extremely competitive, and they even have some of their most popular tiles in stock, which is fantastic. Choosing and purchasing our new kitchen tile was such a pleasant experience at APEX, I can't wait to finish our kitchen remodel and figure out what home improvement project we can tackle next! Review Update: Second Experience with Marco After my initial…read morereview regarding my positive experience with Bert, I've since worked with Marco on a second project. While Marco is undoubtedly skilled in his craft, I find myself increasingly wary of his professionalism and attention to detail. I feel compelled to share the issues that raised red flags during this latest experience. First, Marco's punctuality is a constant problem. He was almost always late, and he would often have to leave shortly after to pick up supplies--supplies he had somehow forgotten to bring in the first place. This lack of preparation creates unnecessary delays, and I simply couldn't trust that he would arrive or finish on time as planned. There were other concerning issues that built up over time. Marco left the project unfinished for days, leaving work incomplete that didn't rely on other parts of the job. On one occasion, my modem was mysteriously unplugged while work was being done in the bathroom, a minor incident at first, but it raised questions about why he was in my bedroom at all. When I asked him about it, he acted as though he had no idea how it happened, which felt disingenuous given the location of the modem and the fact that it was hidden behind a mirror. As the job progressed, it became clear that Marco was attempting to increase the price unexpectedly. He claimed that I hadn't been charged for everything, including work he had already completed, such as installing tile. This sudden change in pricing was not only confusing but also concerning given the pattern of miscommunication and questionable charges. Furthermore, there were incidents that raised suspicion about his work ethic. For example, when installing a glass shower door, I heard loud clanging and banging noises coming from the other room. Afterward, Marco informed me that the rails for the shower door were too damaged to install. Coincidentally, I had only noticed minor scratches on the rails earlier when he showed them to me, but there were visible dents afterwards. I can't help but wonder if the damage was caused during the loud noises I heard. Marco also damaged freshly painted walls while working. While he did patch the areas, he insisted that it was my responsibility to repaint them. This isn't the standard of care I expect when hiring a contractor, and it felt like he was trying to avoid accountability for his mistakes. Lastly, I found that Marco charged me for items I didn't need, like extra pipe fittings and even a mop, which were never used in the project. He installed a toilet and purchased supplies for install; however when the same toilet was installed in another bathroom everything needed for installation was included in the box. Upon reviewing the receipts, I noticed several discrepancies and questionable charges. For instance, he charged me for connectors intended for a dishwasher, despite the fact that my project was focused on connecting a toilet and sink. Additionally, there were multiple pipe fittings listed that were completely unnecessary and didn't match the required sizes for the project. Even worse, Marco swapped out parts that I had already provided, such as the stainless steel drain I had purchased, and installed a cheaper substitute without consulting me. I'm very cautious about reimbursing contractors for materials, and this experience only reaffirmed my wariness, especially given the discrepancies in the receipts. In conclusion, while Marco is certainly capable and the work he did was good, I would recommend being cautious when hiring him. It's clear that he needs more oversight. I would suggest double-checking his receipts line by line, ensuring you aren't being charged for unnecessary items or parts that are swapped out without your knowledge. His tendency to be late, leave jobs incomplete, and make changes to pricing or materials after the fact makes him less reliable than I would prefer in a contractor. Unfortunately, I would not recommend Marco unless you're prepared to closely monitor the work and ensure that everything is done correctly.
