Went here on a date and had a blast. Amazing food, great waiter and a romantic ambiance. I split a steak meal with my date and enjoyed clams as our appetizer. The juice of the clams mixed perfectly with the bread they served. Everything was wonderful, and the service was delightful. I'm pretty impressed with this place. It isn't a top notch restaurant but for what it is, it deserves 5 stars. It's in a strip mall and has limited hours. The food is cooked to absolute perfection although it is the typical by George products. My favorite was the hot veggie sandwich but the menu periodically changes (which is actually great since it's a small menu) so now my go to is the moroccan vegetables. It isn't quite what my middle eastern friends would make but no less delicious. The little neck clams are pretty good too. A bit smaller than I'd buy if I were cooking at home but great price point of $13 with no trace of sand or fishy smell. In the desert there was a strip mall, with all the same stores they all have, and lo, a star shone brightly and there, tucked along the back, was a miracle, and it was Chez Mike. And we beheld our sandwiches and were grateful. Onion had the Burger ($10.99), which was cooked exactly right, served on a perfectly toasted bun that held up well to the filling - cheese AND bacon contrasting with those cold tomato slices and lettuce - he bowed his head and ate it all. The fries were amazing - seasoned with rosemary and sea salt but not with a heavy hand, these were crispy but not hard on the outside and perfectly squishy inside like a saved soul. Red enjoyed a Chicken Salad BLT ($11.99), commenting that she liked the dark toast, the tender meat, and a great taste of bacon. She also enjoyed those fries, much to my dismay, as it made it very very hard to steal them, but that would have been a sin, so I asked first. Pony was graced by a Roast Turkey sandwich ($10.99) and loved her crunchy bread and moist turkey, wishing perhaps for a bit more red onion and cranberry mayo, or a little bit more taste to the rosemary bread, but it was excellent. Best part of her meal were the sweet potato fries on the side - dark, crispy on the outside, soft inside, not too sweet, lightly salted - she said these were the best she'd ever had. Reverently, we each tried them and heard the angels singing. Just to be difficult, which I do very well, thank you, so no, I'm not going to heaven, but that's another discussion, I ordered the Kale Caesar without the kale ($11.99) - which they were happy to do, subbing romaine instead. It was topped with not enough smoked chicken, some crunchy little croutons, and a few roasted tomatoes (which I liked, but not with the salad). The dressing was very heavy and tasted like mayo - a few extra lemon wedges, salt, and pepper helped but it was pretty bland. So they lose a star on that one. But no worries, the angels are watching over you. Good food, comfortable booths, linen napkins, heavy tableware, fresh flowers, and cheerful service all made for a lovely meal. Best food I've had in a while. I'll preface this by saying we don't usually pay more than fifteen dollars for an entree when eating out. We almost left because of the prices on the menu because we were expecting more along the line of Brown's prices. However, I am stubborn and had been wanting to try this place since it opened and we could afford it, so we stayed. It's a cute little place in the Hannaford Plaza in East Greenbush. The interior is beautifully decorated. Loved the tin ceiling and the use of red. The waitress was wonderful. Service was wonderful. My water glass didn't stay empty too long. We started off with the Duck Trap which is Smoked Salmon Potato Latke, Horseradish-Dill Cream, Red Onion. Fabulous! The bread was amazing. I'd lay money that they bake their own bread because it was so fresh. The butter for the bread was fabulous also. Hubby ordered the Slow Braised Pork and I ordered the Brick Roasted Chicken. They were amazing. We were so impressed that we had dessert. I ordered the Tiramisu and he ordered the pecan pie. He wasn't going to order any dessert until he heard the dessert menu. I'm the dessert person in our relationship on occasion and he hardly ever orders dessert. Now this is where our only complaint comes in. When his pie came it was a little more than warm. It just kinda turned to mush underneath the huge scoop of ice cream it came with. However, My Tiramisu was amazing. When we walked out we were very pleased and our tummies were so happy. The food was inventive and fresh. We're big fans of "Kitchen Nightmares" and my husband said that "this is the kind of food that Ramsey would approve of". We also guessed that Chef Mike is a CIA (Culinary Institute of America) grad and according to their website we were right! It was worth every penny we spent. Chez Mike is in an East Greenbush strip mall. Suburban areas give me the heebie jeebies and most restaurants in locations like this warrant a special after dinner cocktail garnished with a 50 milligram dose of Elavil. But Chez Mike was an incredible surprise. The interior is large but modest, nicely accented and graceful. Service is very attentive and casual-friendly in a *good* way. The waitstaff clearly likes and admires Mike, and when our orders came out, we understood why. I had two apps: a small mushroom souffle in a moat of mushroom-based sauce, and pomegranate glazed grilled quail accompanied by a prosciutto, fennel and apple salad. The others had herbed spaetzle with reisling braised sauerkraut, and a burger with wood smoked bacon, cheddar and rosemary. Each dish was simply fantastic. Mike clearly loves to cook and this love and expertise almost proudly radiates from the plates. We found ourselves talking about nothing but the meal as we ate and by the time we finished had Catholic-Schoolgirl-in-Plaid-Skirt crushes on a chef. He came out of the kitchen to say hello, and we gushed over him like idiots. Seriously, GO HERE. read more

Since I shop in this plaza all the time I constantly think about eating here. My family decided to try it for lunch last Saturday. It's a really pleasant space, pumpin and gold walls with attractive art work, 2 walls of booths and tables in the middle. If you walk through the dining room there is a cool little bar with a couple of stools ( I'd love to sit and have a glass of wine before hitting Hannaford, it would make it so much more enjoyable). We were greeted pleasantly and seated in one of the booths along the wall. The place was virtually empty - only one 2 top besides us. They've got a nice selection of wine and draft beers, and a full bar. I ordered a Blue Point Toasted Lager (yeah for cool beer). My daughter is autistic and has a limited food repetoire and the waitress was more than willing to let her order off the kids menu even though she's an adult. My husband had the cuban sandwich. It came with a black bean salad that was outstanding (I couldn't get a taste of the sandwich but there was nothing left). My daughter had a fairly large serving of chicken fingers and french fries, I'm sure they were frozen but they were large white meat fingers. I guess she liked them. I had a burger and fries. The fries were flavored with rosemary and sea salt and were delicious. Even though my burger was cooked prefectly and tasted fantastic the bun left a lot to be desired - it seemed to be a run of the mill grocery store bun and turned to mush within a few bites. My husband's sandwich seemed to have a really good roll and I was so envious. It was the only negative in an otherwise great meal. I will definitely be back. and if you see someone singing in the aisles of Hannaford it's probably me after having a very dry vodka martini at the cute little bar! read more

To say that I am a lunch regular at Chez Mike would be an understatement. Also, to say that Chez Mike is the best restaurant in Greenbush would be a no brainer. Mike Cohen is a CIA trained chef, but also an unpretentious all around nice guy. His approach to dining is simple: provide the best ingredients with a gourmet twist in a low key and comfortable atmosphere. Yes, it's farm to table, but Chez Mike is far from fancy. The servers are all very nice and many have worked at the restaurant for quite some time-it really seems like a family. But... I don't choose my restaurants based on how much I like the people. The food here is excellent. I've never eaten anything I have been disappointed with, and anyone who reads my reviews knows that I can be particular. As with my other favorite haunts, I usually sit at the bar at lunch. It's comfortable and also secluded from the rest of the dining area, which is nice if I want to work or just go incognito. They have a very nicely chosen wine selection, and my current fave is a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, but on this visit I just had a club soda with lemon. The menu is small, but offers everything one would normally see on a lunch menu: salads, some entrees, apps, soup, and sandwiches. There is usually a special as well. The menu is also seasonal. Since I eat here so often, I asked Natasha, friendly server, if Mike could make me something that I love on the dinner menu, the zucchini cake topped with smoked trout and horseradish cream. He said no problem, because if he has the ingredients, he accommodates. I totally love that dish. It has just the right balance of cake to topping, garnished with a few roasted tomatoes and red onions. Yum. It was actually large enough to fill me up, so I finished my meal with a double espresso before heading back to the office, and they always give you a complimentary cookie or two at the end of your meal. Flavors vary upon Mike's whim, but this time it was a polenta cookie. Just enough. Other lunch items that I would recommend at Chez Mike are the country pate appetizer, the beautiful roast turkey sandwich on grilled buttery rosemary brioche, the scallop salad, the deconstructed chowder, the homemade corned beef sandwich...my list goes on. As I say, I've never had a bad meal here. I also do takeout fairly often and client meetings here. Just as an aside, if the universe is listening, can we please have another real restaurant in Greenbush besides a chain, pretty please? And I also love Chez Mike for dinner, to be reviewed at another time. Don't miss out on this place, give it a try! Yeah, it's in a strip mall. I don't know anyone's business plan, but the space probably allows Mike to put money towards the important stuff--like the food! The small but smart menu and specials based on seasonality most likely allow for little waste, which is something I can seriously get behind. The food at Chez Mike is 5 star! Since we discovered this gem we have become somewhat regulars. We've never had a bad meal. I think they make some of the best mashed potatoes I've ever had! A wonderful surprise on a recent trip. Recommended by a friend who said "don't let the strip mall setting throw you"...and he was right. Once inside, a nice setting with excellent food. I had a marvelous chicken that was the evening's special. A very good waitress said the nightly specials are always a great way to experience Chez Mike's....good call. Update: Return visit hits four stars again. Followed my own advice and had one of the daily dinner specials. This time a wonderfully prepared Monk Fish. Wonderful restaurant! I walked in on a Friday night at 7:00 p.m and the place was nearly full, but I was still able to get a small table with my husband. We ordered the salmon pancake with horseradish and lox and it was divine. He got the special that night - pork tenderloin with a maple veggie hash and amazing yukon gold potatoes. I splurged and got the short ribs over the mash. They were falling off the bone, no knife needed soft and delicious. I love the atmosphere there - I can get outstanding food and I don't feel bad for wearing jeans. It's very comfortable and the service is outstanding. With appetizer, 2 sodas and 2 entrees it came to about $85.00 after tip which is generally a "nice" meal for us instead of our usual cheap eats (I'm a cheap date, what can I say). Staying overnight in East Greenbush on the way to Albany and followed our fellow Yelpers advice to visit Chez Mike. We were really glad we did. We started with Utica Greens - at different take on them that what we get in Central NY, they were very tasty. I had the brick roasted chicken that was really tender and tasty. The only complaint was that the maple au jus was a little too sweet and overpowered the chicken just a bit. My husband had the Cheesesteak Wellington (a filet with peppers, onions and smothered with cheddar) and said it was very good. We'll definitely be back the next time we are in EG. read more

To the credit of the server, she was training someone and I was the first table of the night. There is no excuse for bad service though. Service was a bit slow , and the waiter/bartender needs to stick to waiting tables . He made the worst Manhattan I have had in many years. I'm a big fan of any place that provides complementary oatmeal chocolate chip cookies at the end of the meal. They're small and thin, but if you like crunchy cookies, they have a lot of flavor. I went to Chez Mike's for lunch. The coffee was good, and the waitress never let either my coffee cup or my water glass get less than half full. The wait for our food was longer than anticipated, though, especially considering that the place wasn't that busy. I also was a little disappointed that she never asked us if we wanted to hear the specials, as when I finally noticed the board (after we had ordered), I saw something that might have been good. My chicken sandwich was pretty tasty, though, and I liked the sweet potatoe fries a lot, although I usually prefer regular fries. Also, there's a big yellow sign, both on the big sign at the edge of the parking lot and on the building itself, which I appreciate, because it does make the place easier to find. read more

This is the best restaurant east of the Hudson river in the area. The food is flat-out fantastic, and the service is just as good. If you want a perfectly cut and cooked steak, or top-notch seafood, and you're in Rensselaer County, you cannot do better than Chez Mike. The rest of the food offerings are all top-shelf as well. Oh man, the one place I miss most about East Greenbush is Chez Mikes. You would not expect to find such a classy establishment in the middle of Hannaford Plaza, but sure enough it is there, crunched into the strip mall. Chez Mike's is a culinary experience. The menu changes seasonally, so there is always something new to try. The owner/chef is a CIA graduate and a very nice guy. I've always had something different, and since the menu is always changing it's hard for me to recommend any particular dish. Just know that whatever you order you will be pleased. Being a classier restaurant, make sure you dress appropriately and be prepared for a slightly higher bill than usual. read more

It's almost good enough to say it's good. It was actually a mixed bag. I loved the Thai coconut chicken soup. Spicy and delicious. The pasta was over the top too much and too heavy. The scallop salad overpowered the lightness and deliciousness of the scallops with too much butter and became heavy. A little vinegar will kill the fat and pull it together. The all to usual red wine was tired and breaking down on the nose. Sign of the times economics. More customers means fresher wines. read more

I have always found the service to be exceptional and the food varied and delicious. I'd much rather a quality meal than heaping portions of yuck. I came for lunch, which was pretty good. The service and food were incredibly slow. I think we were waiting for our food to come for almost 45 minutes. Definitely don't come if you're in a hurry! All fish dishes are great - last night I had the pan seared sea bass - and all all appetizers are interesting and tasty (not bad for a strip mall restaurant). Last night one glass of wine, one draft beer, one little neck clam with chorizo appetizer, one rib eye special, one sea bass special and one cup of coffee ran $92. Came home early today and stopped for lunch; generally I do not do either of these things. Had the chicken coconut soup -- very fresh, light, most excellent. Also, the best grilled cheese sandwich I have ever had. And I'm a catholic -- quite familiar will grilled cheese and tomato soup, especially this time of year. Had a complex cheese mix on toasted bread, with mushrooms too. Not soggy, not buttery. Fresh food, nothing greasy, well seasoned. Service (Nicole) was spectacular as well. Schodack and East Greenbush residents: Realistically speaking, this is all we have as far as finer restaurants in the immediate area and we should support it for this reason, even if it was a little less than stellar. I ate here for the first time during the great heatwave of the summer. However, the best warmth was that of the waitstaff. From the hostess, who promptly seated me, to the waitperson who kindly kept me supplied with water until my dinner date showed up, it is a really great staff. We split a cold soup, a daily special items that was heavenly. A gentle blend of corn and crab meat, superb and great to split. For an entree, I had the Berkshire pig hock, and my companion had pork which I completely forget. Not that the food was bad, but I tuned out most of the date. She had a corn pudding with hers that tasted like what they serve in Heaven. My hock was served with a superb risotto that would have an entree I would have paid $20.00 a plate to eat. OK... But just OK. They were busy, was a Friday night, but it looked like there were only 2 servers on the floor. Service was slow, BUT extremely friendly. Food was mediocre. It wasn't bad, just wasn't great. Duck was under seasoned with cold, soggy fat and a burnt sweet potato latke as the side. Dessert was amazing however. This restaurant was a nice surprise. We ate lunch here, after reading some extremely negative reviews of our original destination. The meal was good, and generally delicious, if a bit uneven. The service was courteous and responsive. The best part of the meal, by far, was dessert. All of our choices were wonderful, and the coffee service was a true delight. I've been to Chez Mike for multiple work functions over the past couple years. Consistently, the food has always been delicious. The menu is always changing so it's great when you go and have a new menu to review. The reason for my two star review is pretty much based on the service. I've never had good service during any of my visits. We visited this past week with a large party for lunch. We had 20+ people so we called ahead and provided them with a list of all the guests meal choices to help them out instead of one big rush. We didn't all come together, but all arrived within 15 minutes of one another. Some people were offered drinks while the rest of us sat there without one. The waitress finally came over to take our drink orders another 20 minutes later and then took our order for entrees as well (which was previously provided a day prior). The meals came and our drinks still hadn't been delivered. We had to ask multiple times for different items that were requested upon placing our order. Forget about refills, your one drink once it finally arrived after the meals was all you got apparently. I get that it takes extra time to fulfill the requests of a large party, but the restaurant should have had other staff on hand as there was only one waitress serving the entire restaurant during lunch time. Poor planning definitely resulted in unhappy guests. It was something that could have been easily avoided. It's a shame when a restaurant has great food, but subpar service. It doesn't make me want to come back even though I have always enjoyed their food. read more

Let's talk about the bread and butter...unreal. The bread was fresh and crusty (in a good way), but this is how good the butter is: I ate the whole plate. The server stopped at the table behind us and asked if they wanted more butter. The table said YES. I'm glad I wasn't asked if I wanted more because I, too, would have said YES which would make this the night I ate two plates of butter. In public. It's served close to room temp, blended with some salty kalamata olives. It's like tapenade butter. I don't even really care for olives but that butter was amazing. My entree was also tasty - linguine with shrimp. It had a white wine sauce with chopped heirloom tomatoes and carmelized onions. My husband had jerk marinated swordfish. We cleaned every plate. I loved the bitty rice krispie treats that came with the check! We're from out of town, but Chez Mike is on our way to family that we visit a few times a year...we'll be back! read more
