My goal each week is to support a Black-owned business, and last week I decided to visit Chez Aviole in downtown Silver Spring. I was craving some Haitian food, especially legumes, and this spot did not disappoint. The service was amazing, the food was delicious, the drinks were strong, and the owner was there personally greeting guests, socializing, and making sure everyone was having a great experience. I ended up ordering a little bit of everything, and every dish was flavorful and well-prepared. To top it all off, the music playing in the background brought back memories of growing up listening to Zouk. If there's a Haitian restaurant in the area, I'm going. It's hard to find good Haitian food in this state, so I was excited to check this spot out. They've only been open for a few months, and it definitely showed in the service. The restaurant is small, with about 8-10 tables, and there was a steady crowd dining while we were there. Unfortunately, our food took forever (almost an hour) to arrive. To their credit, the owner/manager (I'm not sure which) apologized for the delay and offered the table a complimentary appetizer to try. It was smoked herring with tomato paste and spices, and it was absolutely delicious! When our food finally arrived, it was worth the wait. I really enjoyed the meatballs and the griot (fried pork), which is a treat since many Haitian restaurants in the area don't serve it due to religious preferences. I also ordered a patty. While the crust was a little too thick for my liking, the filling was flavorful and made up for it. Despite the slow service, the food was good, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they grow as they settle into their new space. Overall, I'll definitely be back and will update my rating as needed. The food is good, they just need to work on getting orders out in a reasonable amount of time. Even takeout orders are taking over an hour, which can be frustrating. When I lived in New York my Haitian girlfriend hooked me on Haitian food, so I was excited to find a Haitian restaurant a few minutes from where I live. Chez Aviole is small and intimate and its sports programming from three large screen televisions accompanied by reggae music made for a fun, lively atmosphere. The restaurant has a laid-back casual, neighborhood vibe and the food is tasty, the prices reasonable and the staff extremely friendly. The service here ruined the overall experience for me. I know the stereotype is that when Caribbean restaurants take their time it means the food is going to be delicious and I will admit the food was overall pretty good, but definitely not worth it. I ordered djon djon rice with legumes and it took them 20 mins to tell me they were out of legumes, which was frustrating. As a pescatarian, the only other thing I could order was snapper, which was $50! I certainly did not intend on spending $50 on snapper, but I sucked it up. The pate kode with fish was huge and tasted homemade, but it was way too much breading. Overall I'd give it a 7.5/10. The entrees took over an hour to come up and I heard them microwave my rice right before bringing it out, but my food was still barely warm! They also brought out rice and peas instead of djon djon. I reminded my sever that I had ordered djon djon rice and he told me they didn't have any. Why would they not tell me this earlier?? There was no apology. My friends really had me out here trying a little bit of EVERYTHING and baby... mwen choke ‍ Like no exaggeration, everything was hitting. I was sitting there like mesi anpil because what?? This good?? It's a small spot in downtown Silver Spring, but not in the middle of all the chaos, which I loved. Parking wasn't a struggle for once. The decor is simple but beautiful, very cultural, very intentional. And the music?? Yeah... it was hitting too. Set the whole mood. It gives family vibes, like pull up, eat good, talk loud, laugh harder. You walk in and it's just good energy... sak pase type of vibe. Now the service, overall, it was okay. They started off attentive, no issues there. But come to find out our waitress was on her FIRST day... on a Saturday night... with a big group like ours?? Yeah, I already knew what time it was And honestly? She did her thing. A few small misses here and there, but nothing that took away from the experience. Let me start out by saying, the team here (including the owner Renelson) are so nice. Our waitress Julie was also awesome!! She made great recommendations and also gave good descriptions as me and all of my friends have never tried Haitian food. Their lemonade is so good and has a unique flavor. You can order it spiked too, honestly I could drink that lemonade everyday. Idk how to explain it, but it had a tropical vibe. The oxtail was delicious, fritters and pate kòde were tasty. They also have this condiment called pikliz that came with our dishes that had amazing flavor and was spicy. The red snapper takes 40 minutes to cook (they tell you this when ordering). I thought it was fine but kind of just there if that makes sense. Felt similarly about the chicken wings. They have Mac and cheese here and it gives Rasta pasta vibes but was good. Overall the food does take some time to prepare and the team is small, so at times it can feel like things are moving a tad bit slow. First time here and having Haitian food! The staff were welcoming and very friendly. Food came out at a good pace. My friend and I sat at the bar. I'm always down to try new cuisines so this was a nice treat. I even tried their Cremas drink which is like a spiked eggnog. Everything was really good and well seasoned. I don't like leaving bad reviews because I understand every business is trying to make ends meet, but as a restaurant, your service still needs to be professional. I ordered black beans with vegetables (legumes) and white rice, and you guys had the audacity to send barely 3 scoops of black beans -- not even close to a full portion. This is honestly unacceptable. I would understand if the container had spilled in the bag and it was the driver's fault or just an honest mistake, but the bag was completely clean with no sign of anything leaking or spilling. That means this portion was sent out exactly like this. This is beyond unprofessional. You honestly could've just canceled my order instead of sending something like this. read more

Average Haitian food but was inspired by the increase in the availability of Haitian restaurants from 20yrs ago. The meat/protein portions are small. Rice portions are good size. Griot was averaging taste. Lambí was overly priced I thought, to be actually mixed with shrimp. Seemed more like a creative cooked civiche, not the traditional sauce, my least favorite. Legume was 6/10, too stringy for me but the beef was tender. Diri Djondjon was 8/10. Black bean sauce was more of a puree, which is one way of making it, but prefer mine whole beans mixed in. Pickles was fresh, medium spicy. Chicken was 5/10, mostly cause you only received drumsticks, wasn't expecting breast, but at the least thighs. This place is awesome! The sauce is so good and the lemonade is great and the rice is so moist. The waiters are kind and nice. The space is nice and cozy like u could be there for hours. If u want some nice Haitian food, go to Chez Aviole. read more
