I finally found the wild fruit I was missing for decades. Senegalese call it maad and Gambians call it Kaba. Its seeds that's seasoned with salt and pepper, but they over charge for it, yes I bought one, but it was so small, I was shocked, and that explains probably why it doesn't sell as much. The next snack was the mango seasoned with salt and pepper, that was awesome, and the size was great as well. I also ordered cheb-jann but the rice was overwhelming seasoned with that dried fish or stuff that gives it a tangy taste and a unique aroma. The fish and veggies were perfect. Now, the grilled lamb wasn't as great, the lamb wasn't tender and there was no taste to it. Even though they claimed to have seasoned it, I couldn't taste any seasoning. But their fataya is the absolute best. The way they make it, soft, tender, filled with seasoned meaty sauce. Yummy. read more

I was excited to try this place out as I haven't had Senegalese food before! I ordered the okra soup and the ginger juice. The juice was great, the ginger tasted of great quality and was very spicy, but was mellowed by the pineapple. They sell other juices in bottles at the counter as well. The food on the other hand was a little disappointing. The okra soup came with rice, the soup, and a small dish of pepper sauce. The rice was very hard and dry, which made it difficult to chew. The flavor of the soup was okay, but there was a lot of bone fragments and a thick layer of oil on top, which I wasn't a fan of. The pepper sauce was very good though, it was extremely spicy and had an addicting flavor. If they sold a jar of it, I would buy it. I was super excited to discover yet another great Senegalese restaurant in the DMV area! Safe to say that Chez Dior is a hidden gem... The food was authentic and beautifully plated. The mom and pop restaurant hit the mark with all of the usual dishes that you would expect to find at a Senegalese restaurant. Everything was well seasoned, fresh and tasty. The service was a little slow, and a few of the items that were ordered were never brought to the table - it wasn't at all a busy time, so likely they just forgot to bring it to the table. He and I were supposed to get barbecue from a nearby spot which happened to be "closed for the new year", so this phenomenal Senegalese restaurant turned out to be Plan B. My buddy is a fellow foodie and from Guinea, West Africa, so he knows his African food. Since most cultures on the motherland continent fight over whose Jollof rice is "the best", I wasn't aware that Senegal is where it was (actually) invented. The food here is well seasoned and unctuous. I had the lollipop lamb chops & Jollof. My buddy had okra stew and rice. He doesn't even like okra and neither do I but I tasted a little bit of his stew and I was impressed.... As was he obviously since he ordered it. Add ginger beer with fresh pineapple for a refreshing and pretty spicy drink. I had to tone mine down with some bottled water because the ginger was gingering - heavily. Service is a bit on the slow side but everything is prepared delicately so I don't mind waiting. We were the only ones in the restaurant until a couple of the tables got filled. Quiet ambiance. Oh yeah, babe! *Emeril Lagasse voice* I loved everything about the food and the service. I had this place bookmarked for years and finally got the chance to try it as I was in the area for an appt. I called in an order for mafe (peanut stew) and thieboudienne (Senegal version of jollof w/ fish). I loveeed their peanut stew. It was rich and the meat was actually chunks of goat meat, along with some root vegetables, rather than random pieces of tough goat offal other places will throw in their peanut stew. Because there was actual tender meat in it, it was well worth the $20+ price tag. The rice accompanying the thieboudienne was delicious! It's very different from a Nigerian and Ghanian jollof as this version used broken rice instead of whole grains, and it's cooked for so long that the flavor totally permeates the rice. I could taste notes of dried fish in the rice-- so, so good! My favorite thing is that the service was FAST! I called in my order and it was ready about 20 mins later. Giving Chez Dior 1 star because while the food was ok, the rest of the experience was pretty bad. We were hungry, so decided to sit and eat there. The gentleman serving us was pleasant, but he was on the phone the entire time we were placing our order. The menu also had no prices, which I've never seen before. We were the only customers there at the time and there was no music on, so we could pretty much hear everything in the kitchen. Someone was doing a lot of sneezing and coughing. NOT the sounds you want to hear from the area where your food is being prepared. I was tempted to leave at that point, but my friend was set on having Senegalese food today. I ordered uber eats I got the whole fish and attike, the attike was old and dry it did not taste fresh or soft and then the fish was so good and flavorful but I turned it over to the back and it was burnt at the top!!! Eight of us decided to have dinner here after learning my nephew's wife had never had this type of amazing food. So we literally ordered 7 dinners and all of the apps, juices and the dessert. Yes, we had a feast and it was a wonderful experience! She enjoyed everything but her favorite was the cassava dish, the fish; and peanut stew. The owners weren't there but the young lady who served us was professional and provided great service. The young man who cooked did a really good job as well. The flavors in each dish were enjoyable but the owners wife who generally cooks seasons the food a bit more. Regardless it was a great time for my family and everyone left full and happy! We both enjoyed the Yassa chicken and Tiebou Yapp at this hole in the wall restaurant. The only thing I didn't enjoy was sweating during my time there. The temperature was probably close to 80 or 80° inside. They both came with mounds of rice, a meat and a small portion of their extremely spicy sauce. The Yassa chicken was tender, but I wish they had better quality knives so it was easier to cut the chicken off the bone. I liked the large serving of the lemon flavored sauteed onions and small pieces of mixed vegetables. The Tiebou Yapp's fried rice was seasoned broken sticky rice. My partner liked it but thought the meat was a little dry. It still made for a tasty dish when mixing all the different food components together with the spicy sauce. Also tried a side of plantains. They were a bit too oily. Wished they cooked them a little bit more so they had more crispy edges. The Bissap (Hibiscus) drink was a very sweet drink. It tasted like a concentrated grape juice. I ordered the thiebou bou yapp dish, nems, bissap. The thiebou bou yapp came with sooo much food. You'll definitely get your money's worth for it. It came with beef shank, jollof rice, onions, and a super spicy sauce (the chef even warned us to only use a little at a time). The beef shank was a bit tough, but it tasted good. The jollof rice was cooked with the tiniest grains of rice I've ever seen, but it was very delicious. There was soooo much of it! There was a little saucer with cooked onions and some kind of sauce. It was good, but not memorable. The nems was interesting. I thought it would the Senegalese version of Chinese spring rolls since the menu's description for it said spring rolls. However, it's sort of more like Vietnamese summer rolls, except the consistency of the skin was a bit gelatinous. It was very different. The contents of the nems and the sauce that they came with were pretty good, but I don't think I'd order this again. The bissap is the best hibiscus flowers drink I've ever had. It was sweet and refreshing and had a unique taste from what I'm used to. I recommend this drink. The interior design was interesting. They had some Senegalese artifacts, newspaper clippings of their restaurant, photos of Senegal, and lots of large spoons and forks on the wall. I remember having amazing fried fish from here maybe 8-9 years ago, good enough for me to probably have made 2 or 3 trips to pick it up. After years of a hiatus, im back today for peanut soup- maafe! Never had it before, it wasnt bad, maybe not my cup of tea but i could tell it was well made for what it is supposed to be. And the lamb was tender and delicious in it. The restaurant is pretty small and there was hardly anyone inside on a Friday night. I tried the traditional dish which has rice bits and fish with veggies and a sauce. I was pretty underwhelmed by the food experience overall. The customer service was pretty good overall. Its hard to review a place with such great potential. I've visited twice, and I've had the yassa chicken, the dibi (lamb), accra, and bissap (hyssop) juice. I love the lamb, though it is well-done, so the texture is a bit tough. It comes with onion and pepper sauces and plantains. I actually do no like sweet plantains, but these are not too sweet, and I am fan. The pepper sauce really does it for me. It's spicy, but flavorful. The yassa chicken is quite delicious and well-seasoned and I appreciate the rice. Accra was good, though maybe slightly overdone, but I'm addicted to the pepper sauce, so I just kept dipping it in. I appreciate slightly sweet bissap to complement the food. Senegal! I've never been, however, I've heard that their cuisine is quite tasty. The D.C. area is known for having a variety of African restaurants. Since I'm here, I thought it would be great to check out a place whose cuisine I'm unfamiliar with. My friend recommended Chez Dior. He's eaten there before, and swears by their menu. I can now say I support his statement. When our party of three arrived, we were quickly seated and given a menu. The laminated menu has both food and drink options. The options ranged from things completely foreign to me to others (like plantains) that are very familiar to me. Notably, no alcoholic beverages. We placed our food and drink orders with the kind waitress. Not soon after, I got my Chez Dior cocktail and my gf and friend got the Bissau drink. Personally, I don't like juicy liquids, but the Bissap was a hit with the group. The food came out pretty quickly too. Even though it was 7:30 pm or so, we were still able to order from the lunch menu. The peanut butter sauce was out of this world. The savory and sweet bits of meat and yam lathered with the peanut butter sauce went great with the white rice. The crushed chili on the side is dangerously spicy as well. The theibuo diene had a great smoky flavor to it. To me, not nearly as exciting to eat as the peanut butter sauce. The plantains were on the mark as well. The other important thing to note is the slow service after your food arrives. I think it's great when businesses don't make customers feel rushed, but they need to still give us attention every now and than. Overall, great food, friendly staff, and nice drinks. Like many reviewers here, I've had no experience eating Senegalese (or even West African) cuisine, so as such I'm on weaker footing than I would be usually. In addition, though I don't much care for fish usually, I ordered the Thieboudienne because it's the national dish of Senegal and if I'm going to try something new...might as well go all the way. Chicken Yassa would've been an easier choice, but I wanted to push myself. The actual dish itself was a mixed bag. Vegetables (carrots, cassava, cabbage, eggplant) and rice were deeply infused in the flavor from the sauce. It's hard to describe, but it was savory and very different from anything I'm use to. Really liked the rice. However, the fish was fairly disappointing, even if I liked fish. Biggest issue was that it was quite dry and I couldn't detect the herb/aromatics stuffing that I was expecting. I know that thieboudienne is supposed to be prepared in large platters for large dinners, but the dry fish was quite disappointing and this might better as a weekend special when there's more foot traffic. Service was fine but somewhat diffident. Worth trying again, though I'd probably get the Chicken Yassa. read more

Instead of eating it with their tasty grilled fish, they presented the option when I was ordering dibi, to have it with attieke. Yall!!! This was a dream come true. The tastiest meat with the tastiest starch...and it came with all the different sauces too...the attieke sauce with the vegetables and onion sauce for dibi. Anyways, one day a different guy was taking orders and my $18.99 order was suddenly $45.99. I was not ok. Lol. Talked to another guy working there, and they confirmed that the price increase was real. I'm sure all their entrees have increased by now (but not as bad as attieke), but back in February ish 2022, I had it made. No, a side of "riced cassava" is not worth $25 per serving for me. Beyond that, thiebu jen is decent. The nems have had no meat in them the past few times I ordered them (they had some when I first started coming). The drinks (sorrel/bissap and ginger juice which you can get mixed) are good too. Cassava leaf is decent but they seem to add peanut butter and one of my kids is allergic.
