We tried the chicken tikka and butter chicken but it was ridiculously dry! Had to be washed down with drinks because it was overwhelming my throat when I swallowed the tough chicken meat. A gem along Canadaway, who will think that there is a good Indian restaurants in the highway.....I love Indian cuisines ever since it was introduced to me... First of all, be aware that the food can take an eternity to appear. My friend and I sat for an extraordinarily long time, and then I suddenly remembered - I just need to change my mindset. I've spent enough time in South India that I should know better! You might wait for ages for your meal, but that's because it's being made fresh, not just reheated from some bucket in the fridge. So when there's no sign of your dinner and the server seems to have forgotten about you and your water glasses, just tell yourself you're having an authentic experience. And when it finally did arrive, damn, it was good. I had the lamb and eggplant dosa, which offered a generous portion of tender chunks of lamb. My friend had the chicken masala dosa, which was just as tasty. Chutneys and sambar were all flavourful and fresh. This was my second trip here and I remember it being excellent the first time as well. I'd rank it over House of Dosas or Dosa Factory for quality of food. I'm not really sure why it's taken me so long to try dosas... I've always driven by House of Dosa on Kingsway but never stopped by. Well, one day I decided on trying Chettinad Dosa Palace in Burnaby, near the Safari Snack House. I dropped by around noon on a weekday in late October and it was rather quiet although some other diners started to arrive a little later. I opted for the Lamb Vindaloo Dosa ($14.95) and asked for a medium spicy level. It arrived on a metal tray with some spicy soup and cold dipping sauces. I was surprised at how large the dosa was (it was literally hanging a couple of inches off the metal serving tray) but both ends of the dosa were empty. Inside the thin wrapper was tender chunks of lamb (some of which had fattier pieces), peas, potatoes, and onions. While similar to a crepe, the dosa was slightly crisp on the exterior while the inside was softer. The dosa looks a lot bigger than it is but it was still pretty filling. I thought that the dipping sauces were a bit on the weak side. Overall, not bad but nothing really to call home about. The dosa seems to take second stage to the filling. read more

Came here last night for dinner and started with a mango lassi and falooda (rose flavoured milky drink with noodles and ice cream on top) to drink. For an appy we shared the onion and potato pakoras with mint chutney and some sort of cinnamon sauce. Nice and crispy on the outside and plenty of flavour on the inside. I'm a sucker for mint chutney (I put that sh!t on everything) so that was my go to sauce. We shared the butter chicken dosa and prawn vindaloo dosa. Don't let these beasts intimidate you with their showy sizes (it's mostly crepe), my friend and I were both able to finish a dosa each (albeit we were both stuffed to the max by the end of it.) Both were good and had good flavour, I just wish there was more saucyness to each curry as they were both quite thick. The prawn vindaloo has a nice spicy kick to it. Each dosa came with a side of soup, coconut sauce and tomato sauce. Service was very friendly and helpful with recommendations. Location is a pretty far trek for me, so I doubt I'd go out of my way to go again. But if you're in the neighborhood, I definitely recommend this place for a hearty meal! read more

We were coming back from Art of Sauna late at night, and my friend suddenly craved dosa. Really?? At 9pm, on the highway, between Burnaby and Vancouver?! Everything was closing. I thought there was no way we could even find a decent night snack. Magically, this dosa restaurant appeared in our view, by the highway! First I gave kudos to my friend's "law of attraction" skills. Then, walking towards the big glowing "OPEN" sign, it was so surreal I was became suspicious. Why is there an East Indian restaurant by the highway open so late at night? It felt like that Hansel and Gretel story, except instead of a cake house it was a dosa house. I can't remember if we had dosa or if we had a wait long. But, I do remember the cauliflower was amaaazing. This place is a bit far, but I'll definitely revisit! Seems like a lot of people think the service is slow. Maybe we'll call ahead. read more

Went there for lunch on Good Friday (2013) and and had a very nice experience. Right after my sis and I went into the door and helped ourselves to a table, a waiter came to us with menus before we even sat down! That is great attentiveness. The place does have vegetarian fare which is good news to me. After asking if the pakoras are wheat- and egg-free, the waiter said he believes they are so I proceeded to order the vegetable pakoras, a spinach marsala dosa and my sis ordered lamb samosas. The pakoras came with two delicious condiments, including a tamarind one. The tamarind sauce made the pakora-eating experience a very pleasant one. I did not go into the other dipping sauce as it appeared it may have dairy (should have asked). My dosa experience here was not as dramatic as what I had in House of Dosa (Kingsway) or Madras (Delta) but it was still delicious, filling and all. Whereas House of Dosa and Madras made their dosas crisp and huge, Dosa Grill made theirs softer and cone-shaped (I'm used to the ones the size and shape of an arm). The service was very efficient and attentive. I give them kudos for this and the quality of the food is very satisfactory. Good work! read more

We came here for a belated Father's Day Dinner. I loved the Dosa My chai was very slow. I think that they forgot to give it to me. Everyone got there drink and 25 minutes later I had to remind him to bring it over. The bill fiasco was just that...a fiasco. I was clear on the instructions to have the bill split three ways, however, either he was confused or I wasn't explaining it properly but it become a show of confusion and unnecessary misunderstanding for something that should've been simply executed. Other than that he was very friendly, even joking with the table. The chai was nicely made. The place is small but accommodating for both large and small families. Came to this restaurant for somewhat of a late dinner around 9pm. It was our first time so we didn't realize till we were half way through our meal that they closed at 10. It was all good though as they let us finish and didn't rush us. Now it had been a few years since I had last eaten dosa's so I didn't know what to expect. But after taking my first couple bites, it all came back to me and man were my taste buds going crazy! I ordered the Paneer masala dosa and my friend got the butter chicken, we were both very pleased with our choices. Portion size is perfect, and the food is worth every penny. We came here expecting Saravanaa Bhavan caliber South Indian food (dosas in particular) but left not feeling that satisfied. Had no issues with the food, just thought it was adequate at best. The chutneys for example tasted bland and the gun powder dosa was not spicy. Good if you have a craving for dosas but don't go with high expectations. read more

After eating Indian food for the past 30 years this Burnaby restaurant served the worst dish ever. I agree with other recent reviews that this place has severely dropped in the past few months. The Korma sauce that they served with the dish looked and tasted like it had just been poured straight out of a tomato can - definitely not made with the cashew base sauce that this traditional dish calls for. The vegetables were not your typical indian mix but rather looked and tasted like it had come out of one of those frozen mix vegetable bag. Came here for dinner on a Sunday and it was moderately busy, but our food came quickly. I had the chicken chettinad curry (I was given the option to make it spicier, but I kept it mild) and my wife had shrimp vindaloo dosa. My curry was really good: Not mouth burning spicy, but full of spicy flavour -- just the way I like it. The shrimp vindaloo dosa was also good, but too spicy (in the end, my wife had to swap me for my curry). It comes with some mouth-cooling chutneys, but if my curry didn't come with rice and salad we would have needed a mango milkshake or lassi (they have both). We didn't opt for the drinks so our meal was $30 with tax and tip. I think our friend had the masala chicken and it was super spicy in just the right way. I love Indian food, but this is only my second time having dosas. A few weeks ago I went to House of Dosa and found their dosas crispier and milder to the extent of blandness. I'm glad I gave dosas a second chance at Dosa Grill. (Although I still prefer naan and roti to dosa.) read more

It began on a simple Saturday afternoon - we were driving down Canada way back home, when we spotted an oasis - dosa palace!! My mother and I have been craving dosa for a couple months now, and when we passed by this restaurant it felt like fate. We immediately made a u turn and decided to satisfy our cravings, and boy am I glad we did. The service was great - we got offered hot masala chai tea and our warm crispy dosas came with three different types of dipping sauce. Delicious. In premises that used to house the Dosa Grill now sits a new dosa restaurant, the Chettinadu Dosa Palace. Not having been to the Dosa Grill, I can't compare, but I can say that the Palace does serve some impressive food. The service was also quite good. And it was excellent that they could tailor the main dishes to meet our desired level of spiciness, as neither I nor my husband can tolerate too much heat. That said, the standard samosas and the sambal that came with our dosas were excellent, though sparkly on the tongue. The mango lassis were made fresh for us, and they were delicious. I had a paneer masala dosa; my husband, the chicken palak dosa. Both were excellent and perfectly prepared for our palates. A dinner like that made me realize how much I missed Indian food. read more

Excellent food. Simple but tasty. I would have to say that they don't have to fry everything, but of course we know that everything tastes better fried lol. Offering halal meats and veggie choices abound. Everything seems authentic (to this white guy anyway) and the service is good. We had the lamb masala dosa, veggie pakoras and the Poori masala. We ate here once and we love it! My kids, 2 are below 10yrs of age, enjoyed their food. So we kept coming back for more. We tasted other Indian restaurants, and having been in the middle east where Indian food is served on every corner, I can say that this place serves authentic tasting Indian dishes. Horrible service! Waited 45 minutes in total and still no food. When asked why- the waiter could careless. He brushed off and asked for wait another 10 minutes. Didn't seem to wanna serve us because we sat outside in the patio. We called and complained as didn't want to make a scene at the restaurant. No compensation and the duty manager could care less. This is the only dosa place in Burnaby I know. My Indian coworker suggested. A very tasty dinner. We shared our dishes. Masala dosa was excellent and chettinand chicken curry was my favorite. Lamb dosa was flavorful too. I wouldn't recommend Tandoori chicken in a South Indian restaurant as it's a North India dish. We ordered it as my friend wanted to try it. The 1/2 chicken was dry ( 2.5 *dish). Service was OK. A very unusual location near deer lake. But if you go for a long walk or run it's a good place for a lunch. Tried this place due to decent reviews and a love of Indian food. My friend and I came for dinner around 5:15pm, close to opening time. There were two other tables during our entire visit, plus a hand full of take-out orders. Our table didn't appear to be wiped, or maybe it wasn't wiped well, because there were some crumbs from a previous diner. My friend's seat was ripped as well. We wanted to give this place a chance despite first appearances. My friend and I wanted to order the mixed vegetable pakora, their "world famous" butter chicken, and their mutter paneer. We were told they didn't have butter chicken, which is odd considering they just opened. I asked if there is anything else on the menu that they don't have today, and they said they have everything else. My friend ordered the Chicken Curry instead. 15 minutes after ordering we were told they don't have mixed vegetable pakora. We should have left at this point, but we wanted to give them a chance. We opted not to get any appetizers, thinking our entrees should be coming out soon. 35min later we received our entrees - so it took about 50min to receive any food. My mutter paneer sauce tasted good, but my paneer was not fresh as was stated in the menu, I have purchased frozen paneer from superstore, and this paneer that was served to me was a dead ringer for the superstore one - cubed, rubbery, and low taste. I never tried the superstore paneer again because it made my stomach ill, which is what happened to me after eating the paneer from this restaurant. My friend's curry chicken was extremely over peppered. I tried her sauce and all I could taste was black pepper. The chicken pieces were the lowest quality cuts you could have - sinewy, fatty, and dark meat. Their was an off taste to her chicken, maybe it was old? She didn't finish her meal. Too top it off: our rice was over cooked, our meals were accompanied by a "salad" of strands of undressed iceberg lettuce, our waters were never refilled, and we were never checked on to see how our food was. We should have returned our meals but didn't think to do so at the time. Our experience was disappointing. My friend had to grab food from another place because she was still hungry. read more

Slow and deceptive service. When I arrived there were 2 tables with customers waiting for food, and 1 table finishing their meal. I placed a simple order for 1 dosa. After 1 hour I asked the server about my order. He assured me I was next. Over the next 30 minutes he proceeded to bring food (dosas and curry entrees) to several new customers who had arrived and placed orders well after me. This place is absolutely fantastic. Being from a first generation South Indian family, we are picky when it comes to dosas, and these were some of the best dosas we've had in a restaurant. Also, my mom and I love chaat, but never find good chaat outside of India. The papaadi chaat here was amazing. Everyone loved it and we ordered several more. The service was fantastic, and the inside of the restaurant was well done. The outside doesn't look super impressive, but it is authentic and a great experience. They serve meat, as well as a huge variety of dosas. The menu is quite extensive, and they did everything well. Next time we are back in Vancouver or Burnaby, we will definitely be going again. Also, the hours posted here aren't fully accurate. They are definitely open on the weekends, we went on a Sunday and they open at 11:30am. read more

I am from South Indian state of Kerala and I usually don't leave bad reviews about food as I owned restaurants in India and abroad and I understand how hard it is to run a food business especially in a country like Canada where the resources are so limited. I usually stay away if I didn't like the food. I am forced to do this for the first time because of the level of dishonesty from this place. I was having some friends coming over last weekend ( who are originally from Tamil Nadu in India) and I decided to give this place a try. (Chettinadu is a renowned cuisine from Tamil Nadu famous for its meat dishes.) I talked to Mr. Ram on the phone and placed and order for about 8 people. It was impressive how he attended me over the phone. Three things eventually put me off are these. He claimed over the phone that they make porotta (south Indian bread) on site. Its is a special bread and it takes skill and experience to make it ( I had to learn it when I was short of staff to make them for my restaurant) . So when he said they make them fresh I took his word and thought 'oh I should have tried this place before' . It turned out the porotta was a warmed up frozen food export from India. You can tell it is frozen as the fresh porotta wont go crispy in 10 minutes. He over the phone and in person when I was picking up , claimed that food is fresh 'just made for your order' . The three curries , Chicken , Goat and Paneer Butter masala tasted nothing like south Indian and I can clearly say what type of readymade curry paste has been used. I couldn't taste any fresh Tomato, curry leaves or any type of fresh ingredients in them. Needless to say my guests were disappointed. The Vada and chicken 65 I ordered as starters were good and those were the only fresh items I could sense. The sambar for the vada was again disappointing and watery. ( Tamil people make the best sambar in South India) Last but the worst, Mr.Ram was trying so hard to convince me that they don't usually give discounts for takeaway orders , but would give me a special 10 percent off of their restaurant price (my order being $275) . I smiled and said thank you as I am all for the food business making some money. And he tried to introduce a guy in chef coat to me as the 'sous chef' and he clearly seemed embarrassed and amused!!! I would like to request Mr. Ram to be honest when you sell food and please don't claim whatever you aren't.... at least to a South Indian person. I will give this place one more try in the future and for sure will change my opinion if the practices change. read more
