A fun place to taste wine.
    MaryLouise K.

I had fun at Chestnut Ridge Winery. The owners, Phillip and Teresa Holcomb, were very hospitable. We drank wine and ate cheese on the patio with friends. We bought three bottles of wine to take home and also bought one for our friends.

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this place. We found them online and the dog "Merlot" grabbed my attention right away (although he wasn't there while we were). Even so, we tasted nearly every wine they had, sat and drank another couple glasses with complimentary snacks and all around enjoyed ourselves. The owner was very sweet, takes great pride in her wines and loves to host. These wines were so amazing I had to buy three bottles! I only wished you could get them shipped and buy them online. Yum!!!!

We love the wine and it's a beautiful spot to visit! Nice porch, and a lovely walking trail.

Theresa very patiently let us taste many of their drier wines until we decided on a glass or two to enjoy out on their deck.

Our first…read moreimpression was that this place would be stereotypical WV: there was a gravel driveway, a no-frills farmhouse and pole barn with vinyl siding, and a dog barked at us from the kitchen as we pulled up. I figured at least we'd get a good story out of it. But when we got in, we were greeted by Craig and Candie who are the "mom and pop" of this mom and pop winery! Craig led us through the tasting of about 7 wines, and he shared historical information about WV wine country, grape lineage and history, the politics of wineries in WV, and most importantly what makes a "perfect wine". Suffice it to say we learned A LOT! And the wine was great too! We walked away with 6 bottles (they can't ship), and we plan to go back next time we're in town!

They helped us put together great flights, with 12 samples. If you are interested in wine at all, the owner can school you on everything you would ever want to know. Incidentally, they do not use additives in their wine. There were many European-style options. I shy away from tastings in Ohio because I am overwhelmed by the sweetness of the wine, but this is an entirely different experience. In addition, the beautiful building was created with wood from their land with their sawmill. This will be on our list of places to take company from now on. It's only 17 minutes from Marietta, with a quick turn off the interstate.

My son graduated from Ohio University and we made a reservation for a party of 12. Despite that reservation, there was a considerable wait (about an hour) but that's not why I'm writing this review. We traveled from Pittsburgh to celebrate my son, so I brought a specially made cake from a local bakery that he loves. I asked the manager if we could serve that cake after the meal and not only did he decline, he was very rude. Even after I reminded him that we were on the verge of spending close to $1000 in his restaurant he would make no exception. I didn't make a fuss but after our meal when the waitress asked if we wanted dessert, we had a good laugh and said uhhhh no thank you. I hope the potential handful of desserts you thought we might be forced to buy was worth this one star review.

We were advised that they do take online reservations, so I'd most recommend that before making the drive out. We got seated on their patio and the views were absolutely gorgeous. I know the weather has nothing to do with the restaurant but if you get a chance to come here on a beautiful day and sit outside, it's truly an amazing experience. The service was nice, the man who was serving wine walked us through their offerings and helped up pick bottles we'd like. Our food server was also friendly and on top of making sure everything was going well. I do always appreciate when places leave me a pitcher or carafe of iced tea, because I really do go through my drinks like I was just lost in a desert for a week. The menu does change, when we were there the duck entree did look very tempting but ultimately I went with a chicken Caesar salad and French onion soup. Both were delicious and paired nicely with the complementary bread and garlic oil. I was very satisfied after my meal and I actually quite enjoyed my glass of wine. I'm not crazy about wine but the bobcat blush was sweet and delicious. I really hope I get to visit here again!

They were also making fresh brick oven pizzas although we did not have any they looked good. There is a chapel-like building right there that was set up for a wedding that afternoon and it was very cute with black painted corrugated ceiling and stained glass windows. There are also cabins on-site which would probably be good for the wedding party although they didn't look too great and built a little jenky. The tasting room was small and cozy with stone walls and beams all around. There was one person working the tasting room and it was crowded but she was pleasant and efficient and we didn't have to wait too long in between pours. The wine isn't great and they don't grow their own grapes but outsource them from California, New York and other areas. They do have a nice Niagara wine (obviously from NY) and the BlackBerry Merlot was pretty good too. We bought a bottle of each of those but the others were just meh or yuck. (A few even had a vinegar taste to them). But it's a cute winery and I still recommend a visit. There were 5 in our group and after our tasting we each got a glass to enjoy on the covered patio while listening to the music piped into the outdoor speakers (current music from 70s to now but nothing obnoxious). Tasting was super cheap at only $5. It's worth a visit.

I have brought several of my grape wine loving friends to Dutch Creek and they all leave pleasantly surprised with purchased bottles in hand. Love this winery's location too. Enough away from the hustling college town to provide a calm and pleasant experience, yet very convenient to the local restaurants to make for a lovely first course to your evening's meal. I can't say enough good things about this unique winery. Their bee to bottle process rivals any other wineries I've visited, which includes those of Germany and Italy that we have enjoyed. Yelp needs to create a special category just for Dutch Creek Winery.

I'll never be mistaken for a wine connoisseur and those who are will surely turn up their noses, but we found the bottle of Cab Sauv Reserve up to the moment. We went with "one each" of the three specials on a early spring Friday night: Shrimp Cakes, Caprese Salad, and Roasted Brussels Sprouts. The shrimp cakes were sneaky good with the small things making the difference - the lettuce and spring onions they lay upon were fresh and crisp, the spicy aioli was smooth and not overpowering. The caprese worked for the time of year. Too early for truly great tomatoes but the ample basil drizzle and good fresh mozzarella can take you a long way. And wow what a generous portion of brussels sprouts and not burned or crispy as these often become. The walnuts definitely worked with the sweet bacon, something my dining companion said would not always be the case for her. And while one can assume prices are lower here in rural southeastern Ohio, they truly were at $14, $9, and $12 respectively. The upper deck had diners taking in the view, but it was by no means crowded. The lower areas, some covered, some uncovered had plenty of folks too. Those areas are good for parties (we did a big birthday for my mother there) and for cooler temps in the summer when the high deck attached to the kitchen and indoor dining area gets pretty toasty even with the umbrellas and sun shades.

From the patio, you can sip wine while watching the sun clock out for the day in spectacular fashion--trees below, golden sky above, and you in the middle wondering why you don't live here. The staff know their stuff but never make you feel like you need a sommelier certificate to hang with them. We ordered a charcuterie board that was basically a work of art--cheeses, meats, and fruit all perfectly Instagrammable. The pizza looked so good that we almost committed to a second dinner. Everything about this place says, "Stay awhile." It's cozy, relaxed, and just fancy enough to make you feel sophisticated without needing to remember which fork to use. Between the friendly vibes, delicious food, and sunset views straight out of a postcard, this winery delivers the perfect mix of class and comfort--with just enough wine to make you think you've discovered paradise.
