The staff and owner/head distiller are nothing short of the epitome of southern hospitality. They will answer any questions you have and take really good care of you. I got a tour while I was there and was even allowed to taste the raw spirits right out of the still...that'll grow some hair on your chest! They have soooo many types and flavors of moonshine it's insane. My favorite spirits were the "Charred in a jar" series. They put a toasted oak stave inside of each jar so the spirits continue to age naturally. I bought a couple bottles of the Apple Butter flavor and put them in my garage so I'd get huge temp changes, it's already gotten better in six months. I need to buy more and age them like that for a few years. When I was there they were having a private event and everyone was dressed from the roaring 20's which was really cool to see. I tasted his products and ended up buying the White Lightening, which was smoother than most. He was in the middle of making the next batch of a cinnamon apple flavored shine, and that was good, too. The flavor tasted very natural. Very real apple flavor. The location is convenient if you're in town. I'll make a point to go back next time I'm in Charleston.

The atmosphere is fantastic and really adds to the overall vibe. I ordered an Old Fashioned, which was excellent--personally, I'd go with just a touch less simple syrup next time to make it perfect. My wife chose the Bloody Mary, and it was unlike any we've had before in a great way. We both really enjoyed our drinks. We also tried a single barrel flight, which definitely lived up to expectations. If you're a bourbon lover, this place is well worth a visit--you really can't beat the experience.

Also note to mention this is an 11 mile ride off of interstate 79 thru farm land with narrow roads so if your use to city driving be careful. I'm not a Vodka drinker so I was down to tasting the Moonshine and whiskies. I'm not a Red Bull drinker so the cinnamon whiskey was out for me. The moonshine is truly amazing on what I imagined moonshine should taste like. One of the other things that made me wonder after I left was the bottles were pretty heavy duty which probably is why the prices were a bit steep. I would like to see something a little more gimmicky like a Watermelon, Peach, pineapple or mango moonshine in a 1/2 gallon mason jar or hill Billy Jug. We arrived and the woman asked if we were part of the tour. She said there is room. But then said it's with an existing group of 12 people. I said oh nah we aren't interested. Thought it was randoms etc; We sampled 6 different whiskeys. Up to 6 if you can't obtain all. I had all that was almost available. The bourbon, Rye and Lime cello was my favorites. The owner does a good job and explained how they started and what they were using and were going to use. Asked if he sold his barrels after use. He said no because he will use at the cidery and vice versa. He was very nice and looked a lot like Kurt Surter, the creator of Sons of Anarchy. The bourbon is $75 a bottle. Think it's because it's 6 years old. I was in hope they had the 6 year old apple brandy but they didn't. Wanted to try it out. This place is very eas to miss. Remember there is a large parking lot next door that helps.

They are a family-owned business that makes several types of moonshine: flavored 45 proof, Original 90 proof, Buckeye Lightning 120 proof, and 151 proof Buckeye Thunder. They now make a bourbon too. You can order drinks from Hocking Hills Moonshine while dining at M & M Diner. We were able to try several flavors of moonshine. They also sell moonshine cocktails. My favorite was the blackberry moonshine. And you must try the frozen blackberry moonshine slushie! Missy (a 4th generation moonshiner!) was very helpful in guiding us in our moonshine journey. Definitely stop by after exploring the Hocking Hills area for a moonshine tasting and buy a bottle to support a great local business.
