I dined here a couple of months ago and loved it! I didn't take any pictures, sadly though. Made a reservation for 6:30pm. I got the filet mignon (perfectly cooked, great crust, and juicy) with a loaded baked potato. Supposed to be shareable sides, but I ate the whole thing! It was so delicious! My date had a steak (can't remember which one) and potato skins as a side. Potato skins are definitely shareable. He enjoyed his meal. He had a beer and I had a glass of wine with my meal as well. The restaurant is quaint and the staff was responsive. The food was good but for a steak house you would think the steak would have come out perfect. My DIL ordered her steak medium rare and it came out med well. They did bring her a new steak but at least 1/4 of it was gristle. Every item is à la carte and fairly expensive for the quality. The wife and I chose The Chess Club Steak House to celebrate our 31st anniversary. The wife called and made a reservation for two. It is a house converted into a restaurant. It used to be one of our favorite breakfast spots (The Chess Club Cafe). When we arrived, we noticed a facelift was given to the place inside and out. The owner/hostess seated us promptly and a hand signed Anniversary card with photo was on the table with a few decorations. Very classy! The calamari was ordered for the appetizer and a couple glasses of red wine too. The calamari was the best I have ever had. Not oily or heavy, very clean, crisp, and tender. Three dipping sauces accompanied the dish. Delicious all three! We went to a steakhouse and didn't order a steak. I ordered the PISTACHIO ENCRUSTED SEA BASS and the wife the CRAB CAKES. I am from Galveston and my grandmother made crab cakes for a living. I've tasted a few in my life. The absolute best! In all honesty, my sea bass was a little too salty for my wife. I didn't mind the extra salt but just saying. The menu is ala carte. The two sides to accompany our entrees were the jalapeno macaroni and cheese and Brussel sprouts. Both of which were fantastic. Overall, the meal was superb! So why not dessert. I misunderstood the menu on the Caramel Pecan Ice Cream Pie. I thought it was a pecan pie with caramel and ice cream. Nope...it was exactly what it said, an ice cream pie with pecan and caramel. I'm not a big ice cream pie fan but as ice cream pies go...not bad. Everyone said the bread pudding is a must. Best tasting Steak, I've ever put in my mouth. When walking into the restaurant the smell was amazing and you just knew the food was going to be good. More than that, I barely touched my filet and it just cut so easily, it tasted amazing! Creamed spinach, brussels' sprouts and mac and cheese were incredible! Then to top it off was cream brûlée and bread pudding were just out of this world! Service was fantastic and I can't wait to go back again and again. read more

It's been a while since I visited the Chess Club; since it was just a breakfast/lunch eatery. Last night our daughter surprised us with an anniversary dinner here. We were warmly greeted and seated immediately. The table was sprinkled with glittery anniversary custom confetti (very much like Ruth's Chris). The waitstaff was prompt and very friendly. The food we ordered was very good, but the jalapeño mac and cheese was wonderful. The only drawback (and this is a big one for me) was that there were too many tables for such a small place and it was extremely loud, so loud that it was mostly what I focused on. In fact, I thought it was a bit rowdy, more like a bar. I think they are trying to mimic places like Ruth's Chris and other high end restaurants but they will need to do something to keep it as quiet and enjoyable as one of those other places. read more

We have returned and eaten the most delicious meals imaginable! The steaks are tender and full of flavor. The seafood is excellent. The pistachio crusted sea bass is outstanding ! The poultry is also excellent. The chicken stuffed in Jalapeño appetizer is great. The service is also excellent with attentive wait staff . The candle lit fireplace and candlelight on tables adds a nice romantic atmosphere to the newly redecorated restaurant. Very expensive , it's more of a $30 steak instead of a $50+ steak. Meal doesn't include any sides. The sides are "shareables" are about $13 each. Sides were only okay and very greasy The service was minimal, no appetizer plates were picked up before main course so as main course was served, appetizer service had to be cleaned up so "shareables" could be served. Ambiance very noisy, and although we had reservations, we were placed very close to the main door. This restaurant was supposed to be remodeled from breakfast house to steak house, but nothing was really changed. So sad .... We were really looking forward to a birthday dinner, which wasn't even acknowledged even though it was told before and during reservation. read more

Great food and service here. The steaks are great (and incredibly reasonably priced) and the fish is wonderful. The desserts are on another level entirely. We found absolutely everything delicious. Some of our favorites: peppercorn steak, sea bass and salmon, sesame crusted ahi tuna with a divine sweet Thai chili sauce, shrimp fried rice, jalapeño Mac and cheese, praline ice cream pie, bread pudding with great RUM sauce. Our party of 5 had a reservation at 645 and one of our party arrived ahead of the rest, was seated and wine ordered when the rest arrived. We tried 3 apps - spinach artichoke dip, stuffed jalapeños and crab cakes. I am a crab cake snob and these were pretty good. Four of us ordered steaks which were cooked perfectly and very flavorful. A tuna steak with as also seared perfectly. Sides are family style and we tried Brussel sprouts, jalapeno mac n cheese and a loaded potato. All were great! We had a GREAT anniversary celebration dinner at the Chess Club Steakhouse. Yes, we miss the breakfast and lunches of yesteryear, but this is a wonderful "next step." We both studied the menu online, but when we got there, I changed my mind to a couple "specials of the day." I ordered the calamari appetizer (outstanding light, crunchy batter with very fresh calamari. I also ordered the special pepper filet with chimichurri sauce -- wonderful. My wife loved the "surf and turf" filet and fried shrimp. We also enjoyed our sharing of two sides of creamed spinach and a LOADED baked potato. All of the other side-dish options looked wonderful, but we had to draw the line somewhere -- We finished with a shared crème brûlée. Everything was just wonderful.
