Upon walking in here, the first thing that struck me is that it looks EXACTLY like a hash bar you'd see in the Netherlands. I mean dead-on, from the ambiance to the setup and decor. Obviously it's not, but what it is is a nice little coffee/ice cream/sandwich place that certainly has a little bit of european flavor to it. Odd, since I think it's owned by a Mexican family, but what the heck they sure nailed it. I didn't like this place much at first, but I think that's because it was new and still working the bugs out, plus they don't have booze which always sets up a mental block for me. I have warmed up to it as time's moved on. It's got a small, reasonably priced menu. They make a helluva smoothie, and good filling paninis as well. It's very comfy, a place that is somewhere I could see hanging out and working on the laptop for long periods. Much more home-y than a Starbucks. I think this place, if it survives the changing area, will end up being one of those 'hotspots' for people to come study, chat over coffee, and write pretentious poetry. The only thing that sorta bugs me about it is the bathroom being right in the middle of the place almost across from the counter, that's sorta gross. read more

i live in West Logan Square and i have had lunch here a number of times. So today when i was doing laundry near by I decided to grab lunch. That's when it hit me...this place has really good food and at a great price. For what i would have spent to go to one of the chains such as potbelly's I got a cup of soup ( just so-so but hot and filling) , full size turkey and Swiss grilled, canned soda and chips. And the quality was great. I agree with other reviewers that the decor is odd but hey potbelly's faux vintage leavesa lot to be desired and that doesn't stop people from flocking there. So if you live in the area or find yourself there..stop in and give them a try.You will be plesantly surprised. And I almost forget...to the adult woman who was sitting in Cherubs at the same time I was..eating food from somewhere else ...with your pre-teen child...using their outlets for your laptop and I assume their wi-fi. Sometimes you want a sandwich that is just a sandwich and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The medium sized sandwiches hit the spot and taste like a sandwich you might make at home if you actually went grocery shopping over the weekend and had sandwich making stuff. If you want a "missed connection" written about you while dancing to your favorite indie tune while struggling to find a chair, go to New Wave. BUT, if you need a place to actually read/study/meet or relax, AND enjoy affordable edibles, Cherubs is the better choice. Yes, the naked-angel art is a little weird, and yes, you may be forced to endure rediculous dance music or soap operas playing on the TV...but if I wanted to listen to Animal Collective, I'd stay at home and listen to Animal Collective. I go to Cherubs when I need a place to study, which means a table and chair to myself, big warm cups of coffee, reliable free wi-fi, and staff that don't care how long I stay. I've only been here about three times in the last year. The first time was summer of '07. i went with three friends, my husband and my daughter.the people were nice, but didn't have a system at the time for who is greeting customers, or taking their orders, at the time. One friend loved one of the liquados they offer( i think he bought three). what i love from this place is the hot chocolate. i think it is mafe from the "Abuelita" nestle chocolate bar, i don't know. but it's great. the other times, i just took hot chocolate to go. i think it's a great neighborhood hang out (especially if you have a laptop). they also have a couple of tv's and sofa's. i definetely don't recommend this place if you have a child in diapers (no changing station). read more

Great little place we stumbled upon when we moved to the neighborhood!! I was surprised to see such a great place on Fullerton sort of in the middle of nothing else. The atmosphere is very fun and refreshing - there's comfy couches and chairs everywhere and even a fireplace and TV. Other reviewers have said there are board games, which is always fun, I just didn't notice. My boyfriend went in to get ice cream and it was absolutely delicious! I had vanilla in a waffle cone (yes, I'm plain) and it was sooo good. The server even honored my request to put chocolate sauce on the ice cream in the cone (a lot of ice cream establishments will not do this - I don't know why). My boyfriend had a great chocolate/peanut butter shake which was soo rich and delicious. Staff is very friendly! There was only one young woman there when we came in, but she was super nice and even invited us to sit and she brought us our ice cream. I would definitely go back and have some dinner - others reviews seem to say the food is good. I definitely like the place and it's a nice, relatively unknown hangout in Logan Square. read more

Love coming back to the places that have meant so much to my fiancée and I in our relationship. The owner Elvia is the sweetest woman who always remembers us when we come in even when it has been a long time. She makes great smoothies and sandwiches along other items, but those are what we always love to order. This review is for their stand at the Logan Square Farmer's Market where they served quite possibly the best taco I've ever had...ever. And I've been to the Bayless faux street food palace Xoco. I'm serious, the Cherubs vegetarian taco has colorful peppers and fresh squash, light Mexican cheese, and an abundance of onions and cilantro. The chicken taco was seasoned perfectly, a little spicy, a little mesquite with tons of requisite onion and cilantro. It costs TWO WHOLE DOLLARS and (suck on this Bayless) made "on the street," okay grass, but right there next to the street. I already love the market, but hopefully Cherubs keeps coming back-- those tacos are such a highlight!! read more

I came here a couple of times and ordered the chicken salad sandwich. It was very good....freshly made......so it took a little longer than usual to get my food...but I was in no rush. While I waited, a group of kids from the neighborhood came in and ordered ice cream. The owner is a single mother just trying to make a living. The place is charming...almost like someones living room. Couch...tv...wi-fi..board games....plenty of tables. They also have outdoor seating to watch the cars fly by on Fullerton at 40 mph. Nice place to relax....just need more people to go. If this place was located closer to California/Fullerton it would be much busier. read more

This place is great because its comfy and relaxing without having to fight hipsters for a seat. A great place to study, work, or take a date to get to know them better without load music and crowds. The turkey sandwich and pineapple smoothing on the Angel 2 combo were great! This is a nice place to hang out during the day. They have signs about keeping kids under control which I like. Been meaning to stop at this place every time I walk by it it looks really enticing. I finally went there with a friend and I was super impressed. the inside looks like a café and the lady behind the counter seemed to be making everything from scratch. Best place ever and great value. I went there to just sit down and work on some sketching on a Sunday. I loved the decor, its Logan Square people, don't expect nice decor; its the food that counts!!! The sandwich I had was absolutely stellar and underpriced! The ingredients according to the owner are the freshest! I could tell right away that they were! I also had some tacos, out of this world!!! I am a true mexican but these tacos were like gourmet. The blend of flavors were absolutely stellar! I'm not done yet! The milkshakes were amazing too! I had a pistachio shakes and then a butter pecan. They were absolutely flavorful but not overpowering! I spent about 3 hours there and spent about $15 dollars which was well worth. Honestly, if there were six stars Id give it without hesitation. No restaurant in the Logan Square can compare to the deliciousness that they served up and for the price! SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS! This is a mom and dad shop and run by a family. I will definitely be coming often and bring friends over. Cherubs is my favorite spot in Logan Square and my top 5 favorite places in Chicago. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon it about 3 years ago and we go every time we have a milkshake craving. The cherubs decor is so cute and the inside is very cozy and full of vintage furniture. It's a no frills place--you don't go there for the aesthetics, but for the amazing food and awesome service! The tacos are the best around and the milkshakes are always made with love. I really like the sandwiches and paninis too! Always hearty portions and everything is priced so well. This is a gem for how overpriced and underwhelming the restaurants in the neighborhood are. I hope it doesn't get bought out by urban developers! read more

This is a cute little neighborhood joint that I've stopped into a couple times now. It's a nice, fairly quiet place to relax with a light lunch/snack or a coffee and read or whatever. It's a simple menu, mainly coffees, ice cream, smoothies and soup, sandwiches and salad. I like their cream of broccoli - very rich and filling - not sure it's homemade, but it's very tasty. I would disagree with Jeff (reviewer of 10/5/06) in that the exterior does not really tell you what to expect inside. Bright orange outside did not lead me to expect the inside. Yeah, the angels and cherubs are a bit kitschy, but kind of homey. You can tell that someone really likes angels/cherubs and wanted to share their collection. There are comfy chairs with tables nearby or you can sit at the couches in front of the TV. I think there might even be a fireplace but I can't remember right now. One criticism is that the menu up on the wall is a little hard to figure out, along with the fact that there are various things NOT listed up there that are tagged on the counter or in the fridge. The lady reluctantly gave me a single napkin when requested. Chicken tacos were mediocre; they don't compare any Mexican food that can be found in this neighborhood. The chai tea tasted like vanilla milk and was luke warm at best. Unfortunately, I spilled my tea and the lady was clueless on how to help. Perhaps if the napkins were not locked behind the counter, we could have just helped ourselves. I will never be back. All of the 5 star reviews deceived me. Cherubs is like a vintage, homey neighborhood café. The furniture reminds me of an old cluttered attic, and true to its name, has cherubs as a decorative theme throughout. Soft Spanish music is playing as I walk in and come up to a very high counter - a bit confused since I couldn't see anyone behind it. I stare at the chalkboard menu at the very back for a good couple of minutes. When I hear a voice, I shift towards it, and the lady behind the counter explains the menu to me. I'm talked into a turkey sandwich, and added a chicken taco due to the great reviews. The bread is made in house, and I found it very substantial - pressed like a Cuban, but the bread was much thicker. At times, the texture was crunchy and cookie-like. The chicken taco is a marinated wet taco, not the grilled like I'm used. Both things tasted fine, though not particularly memorable, in my opinion. read more

This is the type of place that someone would either walk in and call totally ghetto, or really really cool. The original decor is Mexian-themed, but the furniture is quaint, comfy, kinda mismatched...but I think it's really cool. They don't serve a lot of variety in food, but the atmosphere is really neat. It's my new favorite hole-in-the-wall type place. Food: I recommend the paninis. YUM. And the homemade churros. Haven't tried the other stuff yet. I'm not a huge sandwich person, but I really was impressed by the paninis. Free wifi, cute fake fireplace...I mean, come on. This place is cool. I drove past it a million times and wish I had decided to check it out sooner. It's probably one of the lesser known cool coffee shops in the area - you probably don't have to worry about it being too packed with college students studying...though if they find out, I would be happy if they started packing out the place.
