I came in, picked a stool without thinking too much about it, and settled in with a Newcastle. The room has that warm lounge feel--low lights, comfortable seating, bottles glowing behind the bar, and just enough quiet to let conversations happen naturally. Jen was behind the bar and did exactly what a great bartender should do. Attentive without hovering, friendly without forcing conversation, and she keeps the room moving with an easy confidence. You can tell she knows the rhythm of the place. Within a short time I had two completely different conversations with people sitting nearby--one about life and money, the other about a dice game played with six dice and house rules for ones and fours. That's the kind of bar environment that happens when a place feels comfortable and real. Sometimes the best bars aren't about being loud or flashy. I'll start off by saying, I'm glad I don't smoke. However, this place is really darling & cozy. The beautiful tall blonde working was such a sweetheart. I was so hungry and she let me try her food during her break. which I really appreciated because I hadn't planned on staying out til the countdown & I was hungry. I didn't want to make a rookie move, as they say during one of the biggest drink nights of the year. Streets were wet & tons of young people were flittering about getting loud as the beats got turned up downtown for the Palladium & Rancho Fresco. I met the owner and she is a lovely person too:) I wish we had a place like this for us non smokers in town. because I loved the chill vibe and coziness of all the vintage chairs & couches. but my poor eyes were burning by the time I left from the cigarette & cigar smoke. if you smoke and or don't have allergies to smoke... you need to go here!! hands down the sweetest comfiest bar downtown with lovely locals on both sides of the bar! oh.. The music was so low you could not even hear it was remotely on. We played music on our phone and the owner was there at the time. She had her waitress come over to us (the waitress was super sweet) and tell us turn off our music. When the waitress told us this we apologized and the owner looked at us (we did not realize she was the owner) and starting talking trash to us. We apologized again and said we would turn off the music, and she pulled the ultimate KAREN move and told us "yes you will turn the music off". If you want to support an entitled Karen then make sure to stop by this over priced place. If not, stop by any of the other awesome downtown Modesto kick ass spots. read more

Let's start with the one "bad thing" there is not enough ventilation at this cigar lounge like in most other cigar lounges. Management please look into this. Location- CUTE area in downtown Modesto, plenty of parking outside and in the nearby garage in 11th Street. Inside- very prohibition vibe, recently I found out that they also own speakeasy club on 12th street they have the same vibe going in both locations This club is very cute, the lighting is dim to dark, the humidor is up to par, but they could use a slightly bigger selection The lockers are a great addition, I've never been to a cigar lounge with lockers Drinks - drinks are average in price, and a little too "watered" down but overall good. They adjust them when asked YOU CAN BRING YOUR OWN CIGARS!!! The service- we were treated fairly and respectful, it looked like there was only 1 person working. I too was in this bar on a night where the owner wanted everyone to know how IMPORTANT she is. Her attitude towards her customers is absolutely unforgivable--especially when those customers are paying significant amounts of money for her overpriced wine and cigars. This place was pretty solid for a smaller town. Whiskey selection was decent. Beer selection seemed fine as well. The bartender suggested a Washington State whiskey that was real good. That said, the cigar selection was somewhat limited, but, personally, my head spins in a cigar super store. No one needs a Wal-Mart sized humidor...Its just too much to choose from! Atmosphere and scenery was just like you'd expect from the store front. It's that kind of a speakeasy feel that I'm sure the owner was trying to project. Cool furniture and plenty of TVs. My only negative was that the ventilation wasn't that great. But hey, that's just what a cigar lounge is... Smokey! And I'm good with it. Last thing I'll say is that it might sound odd, but this place had a very female friendly atmosphere. Half of the clientele were women. And they imbibed in cigars as well. It wasn't just a bunch of creepy old guys there. So, if your wife is interested in a cigar with her "boo" then I'd say she is more than welcome here. Maybe it's a different cigar culture out in CA... I've visited this place a few times now. Always a pleasant and relaxing time. Service was friendly and prompt. The bartender was very polite and engaging. A group of about 7 of us were coming in here for a drink and several wanted cigars. I was the first one in and I walked to the bathroom and I instantly got yelled at by the rude bar tender for not being a customer? I told her I was planning on being a customer but if that was how she was going to treat people I'd just leave. My group of friends was coming in as I was walking out, and I told them what happened and we all walked away. Several of my group were planning on buying drinks and cigars so I'm not sure why I was treated so horribly, but after about 4 years of patronizing this business I won't be back and I don't think the group I was with will be either. read more

I like this place, and they pour a decent drink and it's the only place if it's kind in Modesto. That said, on my last three visits, every time I get a cigar from their humidor it burns badly, unevenly and requires several relights (and I'm not a big talker, I'm attentive to my cigar!) I would suggest they recalibrate the humidor to make sure it's between 65-70% humidity. If they get the cigars dialed in, my review will go up! read more

We still flirt with idea coming in and ultimately decide otherwise based on the attitude and service of the bartenders. Every time we come in here we're treated like we're interrupting the bartenders personal time because they're busy sitting at the back table with regulars bullshitting. I am not a smoker, so this definitely isn't the best bar for me to go to, but it's so nice I can't stay away. Huge plus about this bar is that you can hear people talking, which is nice. The atmosphere is totally chill, the bartenders are friendly, the seating is comfortable, and I have no idea how they do it, but the smoke isn't overwhelming AT ALL and I have a very sensitive nose. I love this place. It is one of the few places I have gone where you can smoke AND drink. The humidor is well stocked and they have some good, top-shelf, selections at the bar. Even my non-smoker friends love this place. The ventilation system is extremely good and the place is never smokey. Che'Root is a classy place, comfortable seating and intimate. Good place for a date if you want to be able to actually talk to each other. Equally great for a guys night out. My buddies and I meet there every month for that very reason. read more

Che'root is a great place to go if you're downtown and want (or need) to escape the crowds. it is in a slightly shady area of downtown so be careful- just sayin'. This place is a gem...Cheroots is the only Cigar Bar in the Modesto area. It is a wonderful place to go kick back and have a good drink and a great cigar.Its owned by a very cool mother/daughter team that are not only very hospitable but knowedgeable about the mystery of cigars.I have been there several times and the other Bartenders are just as friendly as the owners. Its a very cozy lounge with plump sofas and chairs to relax in and hook up with friends. If you are alone, the small dark mahogony bar is very comfortable to sit at and the Bartenders always make you feel welcome I woiuld recommend Cheroots to anyone for a unique diversion from the usual bar/club atmosphere. On the weekends it can get pretty busy but you have got to check this one out.....O and if you smoke thats alright by their book too. read more

I was turned on to this place by an employee of a company I was consulting at for several weeks. He raved about this place and he was absolutely correct: This is a great place to hang out. Unlike some other lounges that have flat screens and other distractions, this place has non. There is nothing flat here, yes I am talking about the waitress that works on Tuesday nights: WOW. Its a laid back place, where you can sit with friends, grab a beer and enjoy a nice smoke. They are open late and service is just right, as the ladies tend to sit around and chat with their friends or themselves, which is part of what makes this place great. No one is hounding you to get another drink,etc. When you are running low, then one would walk over and offer to grab another. Ideally they would have a better selection of cigars, but the selection they do have is priced reasonably well. I wish we had something like this back in Chicago, but alas we can not have liquor and cigars in the same location. Damn politicians! We can have 3,000 calorie pizza slices, but no cigars and booze: that's bad for you. This is one of the few things I will miss from my 2+ month stay in the area. read more
