Disappointed. The first impression should have been enough-- the woman taking my order was hostile. I wanted the lunch specials that included soup. She screamed at me " NO HOT SOUR SOUP!" I've reviewed them before but I'm going to do it again. They are taking advantage of the fact that they are the only game in town. I recently basically paid $19.82 for a large beef fried rice and chicken wings. That's insane! It used to be like $14.00 and that is also insane. Sadly I'm not willing to drive to Charlottesville for cheaper Chinese food. Plus the food passes as Ok. Pretty sad since I love Chinese food. I get a craving once in a blue moon. I live close by, First time stoping in. I typically don't want to give a bad review but I was not expecting how bad the food was gonna be. First way over priced. The noodles were soggy, sesame chicken was way overcooked, the wontons were just disgusting. My wife and I literally spit it out when we ate. It!!! on top of that, We had to wait about 20 -25 minutes for the food so service was not good. We dropped in hungry on our way home from Charlottesville. Seems to be a popular spot. We got egg drop soup which was decent. The egg foo young which tasted like was cooked it old oil with a brown gravy. Then a chow mein that was full of vegetables in a white gravy with rice. The girl at the counter wasn't familiar with the dishes. The owner in the back wasn't very helpful in helping her answer the few questions. Seems like your "typical" rural Chinese food place catered to the American palate yet still good enough for a Chinese/Chinese-American. Tasty, fair priced/affordable, fair portioned. Staff looked like a literal mom and pop who spoke limited English with the kids hanging around. I don't know how ya'll end up in places like these, but business looked booming. This was the third place like this I have been to within the states bordering north and south, and I'm thankful they're around when you're literally in the middle of nowhere and looking for a bite that isn't McDonald's. My conversation with the local guy with the Ariat hat and boots: "Are you from around here?" "Yeah." "How do you like it? "Slow." "Slow can be good." "Yeah." "Take care." I ordered the Sichuan Tofu, and it was deep fried tofu in a cornstarch-velvet based sauce with an ample amount of broccoli and carrots. Ate half, drove another 100 miles, pulled up in a Hardee's (Carl's Jr. for ya'll Westerners) and ate the other half. Thank God it comes with a paper and plastic bag because these containers spill sauce easily. Notes: Don't expect 5 star service or to be too sociable. It's a food factory. when trying to understand the high charge the woman literally took money out of my hand as I then said no , it shouldn't be this high she gave me a receipt. as I kept trying to tell her that the order written was not what I wanted. she kept giving me. Avery rude ...noise and would not come back to the counter. when getting my food just said I would make the most of it. I was charged over $8 for a large pork fried rice I didnt want and NOT ONE SINGLE piece of pork just few peas and onions. so even if I did actually order the large pork fried rice that I did not it wouldn't be correctly made either. I also stated I wanted a small white rice the size that comes w meals and was charged for a larger sized one. instead of just ordering sauces I wanted to be nice and add 2 small rices. what costs me $5 and then I tip $5 always same amount to do in cville and waynesboro today was almost $15 here w no tip after the service and again pork rice w absolutely no pork. the woman's rude attitude was the worst . The food isn't what it used to be. They constantly get orders wrong. Then try to argue that you're wrong, like you don't know what you ordered! It's a take out spot so the ambiance is just that, a take out spot. This is the only Chinese spot we have in the county. They need to improve their customer service and quality of food. read more

This place used to be one of my favorite local spots. Since the owner change, foods bland, customer service is non-existent and you're lucky to get what you asked for. My partner was sick so I got soup and some spring rolls. The soup had no flavor so I ended up seasoning it myself and it came with 4 crispy wontons...4....they may as well not have included them. Chen's has a super great lunch deal with a large array of entree choices which include fried rice and soup for $5.95. It's just the right amount of food to enjoy a Chinese take-out treat without consuming a gigantic meal. It is, after all, bikini season. I ordered the mixed vegetable meal because I am behaving myself. The vegetables were nicely cooked, still somewhat crisp while not being under-done. Everyone else ordered the General Tso's chicken, which looked delicious and got good reviews from my fellow lunch eaters. The Hot and Sour soup was adequate, but nothing to write home about. Not the greatest Chinese food I've had. I ordered sesame shrimp and the sauce was so thick and ridiculously sweet. The shrimp wasn't seasoned at all and was overcooked/tough. My husband ordered fried chicken wings. While they were tasty they looked like they were harvested from a pigeon. On the upside the vegetable lo mein and fried rice were very good. The restaurant was run down but clean. One oddity we couldn't figure out was why there were rolls of toilet paper in the drink cooler. While on our way from Charlottesville to Smith Mountain Lake, we wanted to stop for a bite somewhere and found the little strip mall which has two choices....Subway and Chen's. We eat Subway all the time, so I convinced my wife to be adventurous. Glad we did. We were both surprised by the food. I had the House Fried Rice and my wife the Steamed Vegetables in Spicy Brown sauce. My rice was very good, but my wife's vegetables were outstanding. The brown sauce is excellent. We also both had some soup (hot & sour and wonton), neither of which was very good. The spring rolls were okay. But if you get a chance to go here, get something with the brown sauce on it. TIP: We ate there, since we were on the road. But be aware that they only have 4 or 5 tables in the place, so it's clearly more of a carryout restaurant. read more

Dismal little mainly-take-out place, with zero ambiance and minimal customer care. We dropped in tired and hungry after driving from a doctor appointment in Charlottesville, and we were disappointed. The nice African American girl at the counter (there are tables, but no service) seemed overwhelmed and when we ordered a pint of soup, with two small plastic bowls, The tiny female Chinese chef went bananas telling us we could not have bowls with such a small order. I think the plastic utensil and dish bill was her main target. She proffered the two plastic bowls when we raised the order to a quart. The egg drop soup was brilliant orange, thickened with corn starch and not too bad otherwise. We ordered a quart of shrimp lo mein, and only reluctantly were we provided with a second plate. I ordered hot tea- "no hot tea"- and my guest ordered coffee -"no coffee". Again the counter girl seemed overwhelmed and a customer pointed out the cooler full of soft drinks. We selected two Diet Pepsi bottles and I decided not to press the issue by asking for cups. Straws were available, but they were about 6 inches long.The counter girl seemed even MORE haunted when the little Chinese woman began yelling at her kitchen people. There are four tables and two were occupied by the owners small children, playing as they pleased, making a lot of noise. I was unimpressed overall. The sidewalk outside was dirty and full of trash. Super fast and super tasty. As a vegetarian it's rare to find places that know how to season veggies well (usually pretty bland), but my vegetarian entree from Chen's was fantastic. I don't usually write reviews but was not expecting for a quick lunch stop to be so memorable! read more

Cheap, fast and delicious! Very good dumplings for a reasonable price. Hard to beat 8 chicken wings and amazing fried rice for $6. Chicken wings are deliciously crispy and the dumplings were fried to perfection. Would recommend the Singapore noodles as well. We will be back next time we're in town. read more

I actually prefer this place over sit down chinese restaurants in the surrounding areas. The seating inside is small, but for take out, it doesn't really matter. I have never had a disappointing meal from this place, nor have my friends, and we've been eating here since they opened years ago. Typically I get a variety of food ranging from the appetizer list to dinner meals: the pork fried rice, fried dumplings, garlic chicken, chicken terikying, varied chicken dishes, egg rolls. Everything on their menu is made right and delicious. Once upon a time this county was subjected to eating nasty chinese food that tasted like soap from Amherst. Now that we have Chen's, we never have to have poor tasting chinese food ever again. read more

I like Chen's a lot and return there often. I think it's definitely better than the average Chinese restaurant. They put more, fresher vegetables. Their spring rolls are the best in the world.
