    Buttered chicken with basmati rice

Greeted with friendly service as soon as you enter I came in for some takeout Ordered buttered chicken. Serving portion size was very small and price was high for what is usual for Indian take out I have to be honest I love Indian food. It's my favorite and I was not totally impressed. The chicken was served in big chunks in the sauce and the flavor just was off a little bit from what I'm used to. The ambience is pleasant and casual For me, I'll probably stick with one of my favorite Indian establishments in Charlottesville

Some really good food at the Indian Oven. I enjoyed a delicious lunch there yesterday. The Chicken Tikka Masala was some of the best I've had, and the garlic naan was fresh and flavorful. The restaurant is very clean, and soft music plays in the background. Our server was very kind and helpful. Truly a good experience.

If you travel from Charlottesville to Lynchburg a lot, this is an amazing dinner stop. Everything I've tried is delicious.

We enjoyed the food and service so much that we decided to host a get-together for almost 50 people in their private backroom this past weekend. Everyone enjoyed the food and the room is a great space to hold a private party - lots of natural light and easy access from the parking lot behind the restaurant. The owners were helpful during the planning. They made suggestions for the style of food we wanted and during the event were very attentive, making sure all needs were met. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a private event or for dinner in the main restaurant.

I can now say it is delicious, and the masala spices have a unique and tasty flavor. I did ask for spicy and it wasn't as spicy as I'd like. We started with some garlic naan and a chili paneer appetizer. The chili paneer was awesome, and it is something I will be ordering in the future. I was with my mom and she ordered lamb korma, which is more of a curry type dish. As I love anything curry, I was impressed by this dish as well. The ambience was meh, as the restaurant was in a building that used to be a warehouse. The service was good, and our server was kinda quirky--but she was very good at her job. Since Royal India Palace has an extensive menu, I will be returning next time I am in town visiting family.

A notable reason to do that would be that they offer dosas on Saturdays, but not to go (a thin crepe tends not to travel well). I got takeout, and despite ordering on their website they did not seem to be on top of that order when I arrived. It didn't matter to me, and I would suggest that seekers of food that has that home-cooked taste would be well advised not to be overly time-sensitive. I was offered a handful of pakodas while I waited to ensure that I had something fresh to eat despite taking most of my food to go. Attention was also paid to my dietary needs, as they asked me if adding a dairy-containing raita on the side to my otherwise vegan order was okay. Their menu is not huge, the portion size is not huge for the money, but the flavor was huge. From the curry leaves sauteed onto the little side of potatoes they gave me to the rich spice mix of dal to the flaky indulgence of the paratha on the side, the experience was dynamic. Their appetizers come in bulk, but I'll have no problem finding a use for the extra onion pakodas that I vacuum sealed. I probably tried half of the vegetarian things on their menu, but I left wondering when I'd find myself back this way again so I can try the other half.

There are a couple of tables if you want to sit down and eat but it's really a take out spot inside the gas station mini mart. All your basic northern Indian dishes are here both veg and meat. There is chicken curry, goat curry, several dals, aloo gobi etc. I had a solid dal and an oily and flavorful goat curry on the bone. Rice and naan are available. Note some dishes like the chicken curry and dals are ready to go but dishes like aloo gobi are made fresh and will take 15-20min. You can avoid the wait by calling ahead at 540-771-0011. You may ask how will I ever eat Indian food in the car? Well there are some picnic tables if you care to dine on site. Otherwise dal is a very good self contained choice. The world would be a better place if there was one of these spots at every truck stop in the USA. So pull off, order some food (get some gas while you wait) and come back for a refreshing feast. Nice people by the way!

I liked the chili milli gobhi a lot. I wasn't expecting it to be fried, but I enjoyed it, and it was covered in some sort of chili sauce. The samosa was pretty good, I liked the sauces it came with. The butter chicken was just fine, I feel like I have had better, but it was very saucy which I liked. The naan was pretty good. I liked our server, she was nice and seemed to know the menu. From the outside it looks like a strip mall restaurant. So I was not expecting much. I didn't see a lot of people going in alone many people in the window, so I thought I was going to be the only guest at 11:30. Man, I was so wrong. I walked in and found that there was an entire dining room inside, and it was pretty busy for a lunch crowd. The waitress was nice and had good energy. She gave me a table and a menu. The choices were pretty standard. I went with the chicken 65 and the Korma. She asked me for a spice level and I told her to light me up. The lunch menu came with a salad or soup choice and I opted for the salad. It was very good.... Fresh and light. The food arrived and it was great. The appetizer was cooked fresh and tasty. The main course came with naan and a side dish. It was spicy as hell. And it was good. Very very good. I would recommend it if you are looking for Indian in Charlottesville.

It was well-seasoned. I also ordered a side of mango chutney and some naan. The naan was soft and buttery, and the chutney was delicious--it was also sweet enough that ordering dessert became unnecessary. The restaurant was decorated with beautifully embroidered decorations depicting Indian scenery. There were also statues as well (see photos below). The one thing that could raise this review from 4 to 5 stars is that the service was rather ordinary. Not bad, just ordinary. I highly recommend this spot to lovers of Indian cuisine!
