Quality takeout Chinese food! Chens isn't going to change your world or garner lots of attention from outside the community but they succeed at everything a takeout Chinese restaurant should. Firstly their quality is very good, food ISNT over or under cooked, sauces are rich and tastey, all the dishes I've tried have been great. As a note I generally stick to Chinese food at a Chinese restaurant, pad thai may not be your best bet here. Second they're consistent, dishes don't magically change quality or ingredients every time you visit. They're warm and welcoming at pick up as well. Lastly, the quantity you get is good bang for your buck, you will not be craving more an hour later, ney you will be stuffed and maybe have some left overs. It was served eight minutes after I placed my order behind a line of tables arranged (during COVID) about 10 feet from the counter, where the service was just accommodative. I love Chens, quick, convenient, reasonably price and the food is good. But I'm posting hoping Chens reads this. I love General Taos Chicken, but I've tried theirs several times each time hoping for a miracle. But no, it's still very over cooked breaded fried chicken something's in an orange like sauce with maybe some red pepper flakes to disguise it as Generals. It's so chewy my jaw gets sore, I almost feel like I'm eating chewy gizzards! Anyway hoping they work on this menu item, it needs much improvement. After reading reviews we decided to try Chen's Kitchen because it has a lunch special for $7.99 - just right for a couple of Seniors. The place is small - only four tables - obviously most of their business is carryout. We tried Sesame Chicken & Chicken with Green Beans. They came with your choice of a can of soda, soup, crab rangoon or eggroll - an extra is only $.50 more. Everything was delicious & we both had enough leftover to take home. Was looking forward to doing carry out due to the reviews then this happened. Lady at counter sneezed into the area where the fried food goes. Now its peak of the flu season worse year in recent history. She sneezes into her right hand closed fist. Now that will absolutely do nothing but spread it. Lucky we didnt order anything deep fried but the poor lady and baby before us did. So continued to watch and she coughs into her right hand as she is putting our stuff into our bag. Calls me up and says thank you. I straight forward ask her "are you sick" "I saw you sneezing and coughing" She said "a little sneeze this morning" I said "are you sure you are not sick" she said "no, little sneeze". I would have asked for a refund if ordered anything deep fried she did not cook it. But i had to treat all containers she touched as if it was a biohazard when I got home. On my never-ending quest to eat Chinese Food from every location possible, I happened upon Chen's one night when I was trying to find a place I haven't eaten at before. They were pretty busy for late in the evening. I was excited to see some things on their menu that were a little out of the ordinary. I had sesame shrimp. It was good, but over sauced. Terrible dining experience! The woman at the counter was talking on the telephone very loudly in a foreign language and ignoring me as I stood, waiting to order. She sounded like she was angry with whoever she was talking to. Regardless it took her a long time to even notice me. When she finally took my order she didn't bother getting off the phone, she just paused for a moment and after I paid she continued on with her loud phone rant. No smile, no thank you. Barely even made eye contact. After a time she brought the food to my table (still talking/yelling on the phone). Again, she didn't speak to me, she just sat the food down and walked away. The Beef and Broccoli that I ordered was mediocre at best. The broccoli was literally still cold in spots and the meat was tough and chewy. The fried rice was just white rice that had been stirred with some soy sauce. No vegetables of any kind mixed in. No discernible spices other than soy sauce. I tried to ignore the woman's loud annoying conversation as I ate (in a dining room that smelled of bathroom cleaning chemicals) but frankly I was getting increasingly agitated that she wouldn't quit yelling on the phone and I ended up walking out without eating more than a few bites. Drove across the street to buy a Wendy's hamburger instead. Horrible service! Mediocre food. Dingy, smelly, dining area. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

We LOVE Chen's. It's a staple in our weekly meals. My husband loves the garlic chicken and they will Make it extra spicy for him! My only complaint is that they seem to be so busy lately that they have let the quality of the food slip. Recently, my rice was MAYBE half cooked- making it still very hard and I couldn't eat it. We have made this place our go-to place for Chinese take out. The portions are large, the staff are nice, and your food always comes out within 15 minutes. I have enjoyed everything that I have ordered, especially their steamed dumplings. The skin on the dumplings are thicker than most, and they stuff them with a large dollop of meat filling. The side order of the dumplings is large enough to where I could just have that as a meal. A bit on the salty side, so make sure you have a large glass of ice water next to your meal when consuming. Made the mistake of giving them another chance. I do not understand how extra spicy kung pao chicken can be as bland as plain white rice. Hannah Chicken is one of my favorite picks at the chen's. The quantity they provide is good, reasonable price and if you are like me who doesn't like the Rangoons, you can always exchange them for spring rolls. For what it is, strip mall Chinese, it is pretty alright. They do several varieties of tofu here, which makes it a stand out from all of the other strip mall Chinese restaurants in the Kansas City area. Why is is that most places around here do not have General Tso's tofu? Why must they only serve bean curd family style? Why why why? Anyway, their tofu is good. It's not the best you'll ever have. The sauces are all a little too sweet, but that can easily be counteracted with the right condiments. My only real complaint would be the lack of vegetables. Eating a whole plate of tofu is a little boring. I mean, I will do it, but I will be bored. If it was the only Chinese restaurant in the area and I had no idea what better options there were out there, Chen's Kitchen would get 4 stars.
