It takes a lot going wrong for me to give a one star review but in this case, I feel it's warranted. FPO and I are looking for a go to Chinese restaurant in Kansas City and, based on the reviews we've seen on Yelp, we decided to give China Rose a try. I should've known we hadn't found it when we walked in the door and the first words out of the cashier's mouth were, "We only do take out here!". It went downhill from there. FPO has been looking for chow mein everywhere on Yelp. It's on the menu for China Rose so ... The next thing the cashier said, "So you know, that's only vegetables. No noodles." Uh huh. FPO ordered a Dragon Phoenix which is supposed to be half General Tso's Chicken, half Spicy Shrimp. The chicken was super salty and the shrimp was overly breaded, more sweet and sour than spicy ... and it had peas in it. I ordered the Happy Family. It's supposed to have Jumbo shrimp, beer chicken, scallop crab meat and mixed veggies with a house-made brown sauce. I thought, sweet! The pesce-proletarian found something to eat. Sigh! The first ingredient I found in my dinner was beef. The second thing I found could've been chicken or it could've been pork. I'm not sure. I picked around, looking for the shrimp and vegetables but in the end, I couldn't eat it. It also didn't help matters that we could see straight into the kitchen and one of the cooks wasn't wearing a mask. Definitely not going back.

Absolutely one of my favorite Chinese restaurants around the Overland Park area. I've only ever had takeout from here due to Covid but everything I've had was top notch. My favorite of Kung Pao Chicken at the moment. I'm a fan of brown sauce and was hooked after the first time going there and trying there trying their Chicken and vegetables (comes with brown sauce instead of white). Depending on the time of day, they have lunch combos and dinner combos too, which means an appetizer or soup is also included in the meal. I can tell they take a lot of pride in the quality of food they provide here. Although, they only do takeout at this time, they still keep the inside of the establishment clean and inviting. There is plexy glass to separate you and the cashier. They provide hand sanitizer and promote social distancing while waiting. I'm happy to support a business that exercises clean and safe practices.

China Rose Cashew Chicken which should have been called Cashew Celery

I'll be very generous and give it two stars since the food was edible. This review is based on a take-out order on Sunday, August 4, 2024 which was the first time I bought food from China Rose since our usual Chinese restaurant is closed on Sundays and our guests wanted Chinese food. We've eaten at and ordered take-out food from many Chinese restaurants here, around the U.S., in "China towns" and this was the strangest supposedly Chinese food we've ever experienced. First of all, the vegetables used in the stir fries (Cashew Chicken and Triple Delight) were obviously bagged generic frozen chopped vegetables - chopped too small to use chop sticks. The Cashew Chicken should have been called Cashew Celery since there was a massive amount of little pieces of chopped celery. Not that a stir fry of this type has to have bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, or snow peas but there certainly wasn't any of them. Vegetables in stir fry should be a bit crunchy but the cubes of carrots were barely cooked. The small chunks of squash were overcooked. The few cashews were soft and even mushy. At least the pieces of chicken was better than the beef and shrimp. The beef certainly was "chewy". We and our guests ended up using soup spoons instead of chop sticks. If China Rose is going to use frozen bagged vegetables, at least use the ones labeled "oriental". I realized that what passes for Chinese food in the U.S. isn't necessarily authentic but at least sell what people have come to expect. Oh, I forgot the Spring Rolls which where unlike any we've ever had. Instead of being wrapped in translucent rice paper like every other spring roll we've had, they were wrapped and cooked as if they were egg rolls. I certainly won't give this restaurant another chance. Attached is a photo of the bizarrely chopped Cashew Celery, aka Cashew Chicken.

04/24/2021 - H5. Dragon and Phoenix $13.55 (1/2 General Tso's Chicken 1/2 hot & spicy shrimp) chicken was dry & more batter than shrimp. Meh

(9th review of 2021) We've been lookin all over for good Chinese food that's at least close to what's at home in Hawaii. Unfortunately no luck so far. I was sooo excited when I finally found this restaurant that had "Chow Mein"! Woohoo!!!.... NOT!!! I'll get to this later. Ok lemmie start from the beginning when wifey & I first walked in the restaurant. *bing* the entry door chime goes off. Ohh that was cute chime we both thought. Walk around to the inside where the front counter was.... "We only do take out!". Huhh?? What?? We look around kinda stunned by the abruptness in the voice. The young lady behind the counter & plastic sheet hanging from the ceiling yells at least 2 more times "We only do take out, no dine in!". Uhhh ok, we were gonna do that anyways. Wifey & I looked at each other & were thinkin the same thing... wow! no hi welcome. Lookin over the take out menu I saw they had Chow Mein! Yeeessss!!! I finally found a Chinese restaurant up here that had it! I told the lady that I wanted the veggie Chow Mein. She said "uhh you know it's not the noodle dish". I said what?? She cut me off & said a little firmer voice, "it's not the noodle dish, there's no noodles. only have the veggies stir fried". Ok, then why don't you call it stir fried noodles instead of chow mein?? The definition of chow mein is "stir fried noodles" with meat/seafood & veggies. Seriously??? How can you call it that & serve it without noodles?? I grew up with making Chinese food & eating in Chinese restaurants that had chow mein & every single dish had "stir fried noodles" in it. Wow, ok well I ordered the $13.55 H5 Dragon & Phoenix, which was 1/2 General Tso's Chicken & 1/2 Hot and Spicy Shrimp. The lady said it comes with white rice... I thought ok good since I'm not getting any chow mein noodles. Wifey wanted the $12.95 H1 Happy Family, which was supposed to be jumbo shrimp, beer chicken, scallop crab meat, & mixed veggies w/ house-made brown sauce. She also got the $6.55 6pc Crab Rangoons cause she never had it before & wanted to try it. They don't have brown rice, wifey asked. The lady said they only have white rice & fried rice. She kept asking if we want fried rice, but we both said no thanks. By the way, all the descriptions of the dishes came from Uber Eats. China Rose's menus do not have descriptions, which is a little surprising. They do have some pictures in their menu & on their walls of what I guess are their popular dishes. While we were waiting we watched the cooks at work (kitchen was open to see) wifey & I noticed that out of all 3-4 cooks/helper the older guy who was a cook, was wearing his mask on his chin & not covering his mouth or nose. Uhh ok, I'm not too keen about that. After about 15min wait we got our food & left. When we finally sat down to eat, which was about 1hr later, the food was still kinda hot. I thought "oh yippie!". I was digging into my Dragon & Phoenix & found the General Tso's Chicken to be dry & chewy. There was a lot of sauce & batter on the chicken. It was supposed to be spicy, but there wasn't any heat to it. Ehh wasn't thrilled about that part of the dish. Ok, try the Hot & Spicy Shrimp. First thing I saw was the frozen peas inside, not snow peas or snap peas, but regular round peas. The way I could tell it was frozen was that there were what looked like freezer burns on most of the peas. Hmmm, ok. I don't like peas so I scraped all the peas to the side to get to the shrimp. I don't remember seeing regular peas in a shrimp dish before. The shrimp looked fat & I was thinkin "wow, they're big!". Hahahaha... NOT! There was more batter on the shrimp than actual shrimp. Wow! I was so hungry & really hate wasting food, so I tried forcing myself to eat the chicken/shrimp dish. I had to stop cause I ate almost all the rice that came with it & I only ate a few chicken & shrimp. Both dishes were pretty salty & wasn't spicy whatsoever. Wifey opened her container & first thing she saw was BEEF in the Happy Family dish. Ummm, Uber Eats didn't say anything about beef being in the dish. Wifey can't have beef/pork. She was so hungry too that she pulled the 10pcs of beef out of the dish & started eating the 4pcs shrimp, a few pcs imitation crab, & the veggies. She wouldn't eat it all cause it was salty & couldn't get past the idea that they put beef inside. She tried the Crab Rangoons & said it was bland with jus the cream cheese & imitation crab. There was no seasoning in the mix. I tried one & agreed with her. The sauce that came with it kinda looked like sweet & sour sauce. I tried it & it was bland too & tasted like only the sweet part of the sweet sour sauce. Out of everything we had we threw away all the food except for the remaining white rice & fortune cookies. I've never seen mini fortune cookies, they were cute & tasted ok. Hey, if you like this place more for you. Wifey & I won't be going back. My search continues. A Hui Hou!!

It was my first time trying China Rose recently and I loved it! I dined in and everything was delicious from the egg drop soup to the combination lo mein lunch special. As I dined in with my mom, we definitely noticed how other people also joined to dine in and several people arrived for pickup. This is a popular place with great prices and even better quality. Will be visiting again soon!! It's my new favorite Chinese place.

If you will notice, I have reviewed and checked into China Rose a handful of times... I absolutely love this place. I rave about it to my friends and probably go once a week. Their lunch specials are what have me hooked - you pick an entree, a soup and a crab rangoon/egg roll for roughly $7. They have so many options, it's insane!! They have dinner specials too but they are a little more $$ (still totally worth it). I have also called ahead to order and pick up, and the food is always piping hot by the time I get it home. China Rose is my literal go to when it comes to Chinese Food. The staff is always friendly and they are so efficient. You can tell they're working their butts of in the kitchen. I go on my lunch breaks and the whole trip takes 30-45 minutes. Still a fan and always will be!

I usually come here for dim sum, and it is upsetting for me to say that my husband and I should've chose somewhere else to eat for dinner. For dinner, we ordered fried rice and chow fun. Those two main entrées were okay. You can't really mess up those two fillers at an Asian restaurant. We ordered scallion pancakes- they came out soggy and soft. Not even crispy like how they usually are. The flavor wasn't there either. If I wanted microwaved scallion pancakes, then I would've bought them from the store and made them myself. My husband ordered the short ribs- they were bland and tough like rubber. It had a funky taste to it that he couldn't describe and he had to force himself to swallow it because he didn't want food to go to waste. I ordered the chicken feet- this is one of dim sum's signature dishes and I am so upset I didn't even get to enjoy one of the dishes I always order. It was dry and the flavor wasn't there. The service was fantastic. They checked in on us and made sure our water was filled. The timing of the food coming in and out was fine. The ambiance was inviting. There was a sense of urgency and I appreciated that.

It took them a little longer than I was quoted but it wasn't too much longer. The interior was very small with a capacity of 10. They do have a table but that's pretty much it. I would plan on taking it to go just due to space. Everyone was friendly and they made sure my order was correct when it was completed. I went with the beef and broccoli dinner combo. You get either white or fried rice. I went with fried. And it comes with an egg roll and a crab Rangoon. The crab Rangoon was large and had a sweet flavor to it. FYI: They use imitation crab for my friends with shellfish allergies. I also ordered an additional order of Rangoon and I wasn't disappointed with that decision. I think the egg roll was just a veggie one, they do have a pork and chicken option. It was fine but I preferred the Rangoon. I would try the other egg roll options in the future. I also added on a hot mustard sauce. That's a must. It's spicy. The beef and broccoli was really good. The broccoli was fresh and there were a few carrots. The beef was tender and without that weird fatty, gristly stuff. Definitely good quality. The fried rice was a bit plain. It's literally just fried rice, no veggies or egg. But it's also not at an up charge so I can't really complain. I also ordered egg drop soup. It's delicious and such a good value. I highly recommend it. I definitely plan on returning to try a few other menu options.

Their menu consists of a lot of dishes, and some are quite unique .. you don't usually see items like bird's nest dishes at most Chinese restaurants around here except for maybe Bolings. Me and my husband visited on a Saturday night around 8 pm and really devoured our meal. The menu can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but you honestly can't go wrong with stir fries at any Chinese restaurant. For appetizers, we ordered chicken egg rolls, which were hefty and filling. For the main course, I ordered the chicken in black bean stir fry, and my husband got the shrimp Kung Pao chicken stir fry. We paired both with steamed rice. The black bean chicken was rich and earthy, with that deep, slightly funky flavor from the fermented black beans. It was very umami, salty and complimented nicely with the fresh, crisp vegetables and well-cooked chicken. I really liked it. The shrimp Kung Pao was spicy and tangy, with perfectly cooked shrimp (the fried shrimp covering was chefs kiss) and crispy veggies. Overall, we really enjoyed the food. The egg rolls were about $4 for two pieces, and the stir fries were around $17+ each. The portions are quite large compared to other places in the area, so the pricing seemed reasonable. For 2 main course dishes your bill could easily reach up to $40. Otherwise, The restaurant was clean, the staff was kind, and service was quick. It also wasn't too crowded when we visited. I would rate the service 4/5, mainly because we had to ask for silverware, condiments, and tissues separately. The food, though, is definitely a 5/5. Highly recommended!
