I'm really disappointed with my experience here. I paid $25 for a consultation with Paige to explain that my hair is very thin and needs to be handled gently. The first time I went, I did one streak of highlight called a flash highlight (over 200$) to test the waters and it turned out great, so I came back expecting the same quality. This time was completely different. Paige double-booked another client and had her assistant handle most of my appointment. The assistant was extremely rough while washing my hair even after I repeatedly asked her to be gentle. She seemed annoyed that I said something and actually handed me the brush and said "do you want to brush it?" I shouldn't have to explain the same thing twice to her assistant when I already paid for a consultation to make sure this wouldn't happen. Paige barely checked in, didn't review my foils before they were rinsed, and my hair came out yellow and orange instead of the cool blonde I asked for. I didn't even get to choose the toner or discuss the results before being told by the assistant to pay. I also asked for thicker highlights and ended up with baby lights that looked uneven in tone. I walked out in tears and paid $265 for results that look like I used a bottle of Sun-In at home. I'm beyond frustrated and will not be going back. Letting an inexperienced assistant take over while charging full price is completely unacceptable. read more

I've been a loyal client at Cheeky Strut and fully intended to stay with my stylist, Katie, long-term. But after how my recent situation was handled, I won't be returning. I missed an appointment last Tuesday because I never received any confirmation call or voicemail. I immediately apologized for missing it and even offered to tip Katie generously for her lost time if they could simply apply the $350 charge to my next appointment. Instead, my card was charged $350 without any notice, and I wasn't even told I had missed the appointment until I discovered the charge on my own. I contacted the salon right away. After days of silence, a manager finally called me back, told me she would look into the confirmation voicemail issue, speak with Katie, and call me back the next day. She never did. I reached out again, including on Instagram, and still received no follow-up from management. A full week later, after sending multiple instagram messages,the only response I got was from Katie, offering to apply 50% of the charge to a future service. At that point, after being ignored and dismissed, I no longer felt comfortable returning. What's most disappointing is the lack of basic communication and customer care. In the past, when my hair wasn't right, I came back kindly and without complaint so they could fix it. I wish I had been given that same courtesy and respect. I loved this salon, but charging a client $350 with zero communication and then failing to follow through on promised callbacks is unacceptable. I hope they seriously reconsider how they treat their clients moving forward. read more

Paige has done wonders for my hair! It can be so hard to find a new stylist when in a new area and this was my 4th Michigan salon that I visited before finding somewhere that I felt comfortable to return for the long-haul. I just happened to be assigned to her when I first called to schedule so I can't speak for the other stylists, but I'm a loyal Paige fan now. Only reason I'm taking off a star is because I also had a spray tan here and it was not very good! My hands turned super dark even with the barrier cream and the color on my legs was very uneven. I felt the technician went through it way too quickly and didn't do a very good job. So come here for the hair and not the spray tans. read more

I have been going to Cheeky Strut for awhile now and think they are one of the best salons in the whole country, let alone the GR area. I honestly thought I'd already written a review and just came here to update it with my very positive feelings about their COVID-19 screening process. As I walked in, I got my temp checked, was asked to sanitize my phone (which I do several times a day anyway, but like, how thoughtful is this? Our cell phones are disgusting!) and asked to sanitize my hands. Everyone wore masks and I felt very safe and comfortable there. They take safety as seriously as they take beauty! I used to see Corinne and now go to Meg. Have been to her for a couple of years now. I am always so happy when I leave Meg's chair. She listens, offers suggestions, and I love that I can share ideas with her and get honest answers and solutions that will work for me. Plus, she's so dang sweet! The thing about Cheeky Strut that always brings me back is that they aren't cliquey or stuck-up. Everyone here is like the "cool girl" who is also genuine and kind and welcoming. They make you feel included and part of the cool crowd instead of making you feel like an outsider. I feel like I'm getting the best product, the best style, the best cutting technique (is that a thing?) and just like every step of the experience has been thoughtfully created and gets re-evaluated when necessary and improved on every step of the way. That atmosphere combined with rock-star results and continuing education with some of the top industry leaders make this salon a solid 5-star place. read more

Today was my first visit to Cheeky Strut and it was such a positive experience! Steph did a beautiful job on my color and cut - my first in 8 months, due to COVID (I normally cut/color my hair every 8 weeks), so she had a lot of "repair work" to do ; ) Steph was a total delight, listened to my hair wishes and offered her own perspective, too, which was so helpful. I've been coming to cheeky strut for two years. Prior to this my hair was full, chemical cut, and I never left a hair appointment saying "omg I love my hair" I switched to Britt D and while the price was more it was well worth it. My hair is so healthy even with constant extensions it's grown more than it ever had. I decided to double down on the hair care department and started getting blow outs once a week which has made all the difference. I couldn't recommend this business more. read more

I started getting my hair done by KL (the owner) when she was fresh out of cosmetology school. I had been going to the same stylist who wasn't giving me new ideas on what to do with my long thick asian hair. KL came along and I can say, I've had every hair color imaginable, bang option, up-do, fantasy hair, and short cut by KL. I will say, I was one of her original guinea pigs on trying out new colouring techniques she acquired through her training with L'Oreal Professional. She was also my suggestion with my former employer as the premiere stylist for all of its huge theme events. The B.O.B./Crush Nightclub hosted some of the Midwest's largest theme events. These fantasy hair styles were all inspired by KL. From big sexy jungle hair, to artsy sculpted masterpieces, to rockin' mohawks and sexy playboy bunny hair.... she can do it all. KL was also the stylist that was used for my sister's wedding a few years ago. She arrived at 4:30 am and managed to style 6 ladies in a 3 hour period. It was perfect. When I first met her, she was determined to fulfill her 5 year plan and open up her own salon with an extremely talented staff by the time she was 25. And let me say- Cheeky Strut is your ONE and ONLY stop for everything you could possibly want done to your hair. The stylists are anything but ordinary- they're extraordinary. I've been happy to get feedback from the other stylists on suggestions on what options I could do for my next hair style change. They're all extremely fashion savvy and extremely knowledgeable and confident in their craft. But don't let the young staff fool you- they are well trained in many different techniques. My mother has let KL work her magic and given up on the stereotypical older woman do (the short, curly perm 'do) to a sleek, straight cut with tons of body that has got all of her coworkers, family members wanting to do the same. From start to finish, Lindsay Rae was fantastic - she was quick to respond to emails, helped ensure our tight timeline on the day of our wedding for hair/makeup could be achieved, and was so personable and kind throughout the entire planning process. Took my daughter here to go from a very light brown to an auburn red. Stylist was working on at least 2 other people at same time as my daughter. Did not get anywhere near the color we were looking for and ended up frying the ends of my daughter's hair. Her hair looked better when she came in than it did when she left and now we are dealing with trying to get her ends healthy again without having to cut off a couple of inches. Well, going into this salon I thought I would have a good experience, I was wrong.. My hair stylist didn't have a clue as to what she was doing about 85% of the time; so much as to where we had to completely redo my hair and it still didn't come out to what I had requested. I can't justify paying $230 on hair, if you're not getting exactly what you're paying for the first time around! I even called back to get a discount or something and the receptionist was very rude and was talking down to me! Telling me how I'm allowed to feel about my hair. I really wouldn't suggest anyone to go to this salon, it's WAY overpriced and the girls there definitely need more training on "baylage ombré" well; my hair stylist did at least! I hope one of you takes the time to read my opinion on this salon and won't waste your time like I did! Thanks ladies and gents! How have I not written a review for Cheeky Strut yet? My past stems from KL Christoffersen giving me the trendiest, awesome hair I could have! She opened this salon with stylists that complimented her style as well as brought their own beautiful talents with them. With KL's extensive clientele list, I opted to try out another stylist at Cheeky. That person would be Sin. Sin is beyind words. He definitely is the Edward Scissorhands in Asian form. He attacks my hair from all angles and the outcome is amazing. His attitude is always upbeat, he is always friendly and listens to what you want for your hair and when he is done, it is like he went inside your brain, saw what you were thinking and created it. I'm not very good at scheduling appointments, as I hate the phone and am just overall, not good at worrying about my haircuts. Sin, on the other hand, will either text me or write on my Facebook wall, "You need a haircut". Indeed, I do. I received this text a few days ago and yes, yes I do. The design of the salon is gorgeous. From the sink stations, the waiting area, the front windows, (I'm a huge fan of windows!) and the stylist stations is just beautiful. No thinking about going to Cheeky, just do it. You will not be disappointed. read more

Best deal in town for a men's haircut, hands-down. AND they give you booze! I used to go to Jude's or wherever was cheapest, with mixed results. It was always a shot in the dark. Now, after going to Cheeky Strutt, I have a stylist that knows exactly what I'm looking for. The best part? It's about the same price as Jude's. CS has many different "levels" of stylists, the most experienced (and expensive) be a "level 5." For my uncomplicated coif (a hip, shorter cut), a level 1 or level 2 stylist is more than adequate, and comes in around $20. Amelia is my go-to girl, but I haven't heard anything negative about any of the other stylists my friends use. The only thing I am marking them down for is my first experience there, which seems to be a fluke. I waited nearly 45 minutes for my cut (I was exactly on time) without any explanation or apology. I haven't had a problem since, however. I do generally expect to wait 5-10 minutes, now, though. Overall for the price, its the go-to for men, and it doesn't hurt that Founder's is across the street. read more

Edit: After making a second appt. with Maliree I was pretty disappointed. She took me 45 minutes late without an apology and then zoomed through my haircut and color. She cut short side bangs without asking if that's what I wanted and put wayyy too many short layers. My stylist is on maternity leave and I needed to get in for a hair appointment ASAP. I was set up with Maliree for a cut and color and it couldn't have gone any better. We had a quick chat about what I was looking for before getting started, looked at pictures and she gave me some input about what she was thinking and listened intently to what I wanted. We settled on a new color and it went off without a hitch! The color could not have been more perfect. I went from a lightish brown with blonde-ish highlights to a warmer browish red. It's perfect and exactly what I was looking for! As for my cut, she again was very good about asking what I wanted- not just going to town without asking my opinion (which has definitely happened to me before---eek!) It turned out perfect, she fixed up my cut and it has never looked better. My bangs hang so much nicer and my cut is not as choppy as it was. It is exactly what I was looking for! I was not impressed. I was the mother of the bride and paid a lot to have a hair blow out and make-up service. My sisters redid my hair in the hotel room between the wedding and reception. I had to fix my eye make-up at the salon before leaving. The make-up was something I could have done myself. The stylist used 1/2 can of my $35 hair dye touch-up. She should have used the salon's. It took me 3 hair washings to get the touch-up dye and hair spray out. The whole experience was a huge let down. read more

After moving back home to Grand Rapids, I was referred to Cheeky Strut by a friend. I just had to check it out because the name was so, well, cheeky, I choose Sarah for my first visit and have been going to her ever since. She does an incredible job and I have friends and random people ask me to take pictures of my hair so they can receive a similar cut/style - no joke. The staff is very friendly combined with the decor of the salon, you'll want to linger after your service and chat it up with your new best friends. Walked in to Cheeky Strut with one instruction... 'I need this cleaned up' Without an appointment, I was set up with Carly Jo and she gave me one of the best hair cuts I have ever had. Perfectly complimented my face shape, was easy to re-create and all while making me feel at ease at a new salon. I've since decided to grow my hair out and haven't been back for a cut yet, but go back just to check out what's new in their retail store. Their reception staff is always wonderful, the place itself is chic, fun, and cutting edge - it's a stand out in the small city of Grand Rapids. KL rocks! She used to be at Echo and now has opened up this salon. It's very spacious, modern and fun! It's cheeky strut! KL has convinced me that getting my hair done is not such a horrible experience. In the past year, I have gotten it done 3 times which is one more than I usually do. She is probably one of the best colorists out there. I think she's L'Oreal certified or something. I know she's out in NY every now and then and continually learning. I really like my burgundy highlights. People are complimenting me on my hair more, and it's forced me to become less lazy about it and put effort into styling it. I've come quite a ways. Just newly opened last week Monday and they are off to a great start! I used to go to Echo Salon not too far away to get my hair cuts and color done by KL, but she opened up her own salon called Cheeky Strut Salon. KL is the proud owner of her own salon and very passionate about making her clients look good. She is VERY talented in what she does. I love that she picks the right color for my hair. I usually do an all over color, and I tell her what I want and she works with it. She definitely lets you know what she thinks and I appreciate that since she knows what she's doing. Her cuts are catered to her clients which are usually stylish, modern, edgy, and even funky! Don't worry, she's got you covered! I was also lucky enough to get KL to do my wedding party's hair. She did a fantastic job even when I got her up at 4/5 am! KL is professional yet very friendly and a great person to chit-chat with. She's got a fun and outgoing personality that is enjoyable to be around. Her new salon, Cheeky Strut Salon is in downtown Grand Rapids which is situated in an up-and-coming area. The interior design of the salon has a modern/classic feel to it. While white has a dominant presence, she also throws splashes of color in the decor to give it a burst of freshness. The space is open and spacious with plenty of natural light coming in. She also has a ramp/patio area that may serve as handicap accessibility as well as a BYOB area for customers waiting for their appointments. And it's not only for the young - my mother has gotten haircuts from KL and she definitely has made my mom look hipper and her hair looks awesome! I got my hair cut here a few times. The first time was with Sin. He has an awesome personality and is very talented. He kept me laughing the whole time, and when my husband picked me up, he shook Sin's hand because he loved my new short cut. (I got Sin's signature cut. )I'm pretty low maintenance when it comes to my hair, and this cut was high maintenance for me. I also tried Christopher Michael because he specialized in long hair. We didn't click personality wise, but he gave me a great LM cut. The only thing I didn't like was that CM has his assistant do the blow out and without supervision. His apprentice was super sweet, but both times I left with flat hair and flipped out ends. read more

Christopher Michael cut and styled my hair exactly as I hoped. My hair is long and medium-fine. It looked great for two days (I didn't wash it on day 2) and many of my friends complemented his work. Having just moved to GR from DC, I had a stylist for 4 years prior, so I decided to keep an open mind. We had a nice consult before he got to work and quickly I discovered he was listening to me while envisioning at the same time. He earned my trust. He asked thoughtful questions about how I like to style my hair and he took my thoughts into consideration. He also gave me new ideas which I appreciated. The shampoo was complete with a nice scalp massage. It wasn't completely over-the-top, which is fine. I will still return. But if it were, you better believe I would rave about it and I would find a way to award an extra star! read more

I cannot say enough good things about Cheeky Strut. I began going here back in October of 2013 and haven't been to another salon since. My original stylist, Joel, has since moved to New York to pursue his dreams. Luckily I can honestly say I would trust any of the talented stylists here now that he's gone. I've been seeing Scottie since Joel moved away and have had nothing but great experiences. She's great at listening to exactly what you want, especially if you can provide a picture. She's always been able to give me the exact cut and color I want with no issue. Besides getting my hair done at Cheeky I've also taken advantage of their spa services including facials, sugaring, spray tanning, and massage. Unfortunately I haven't gotten a facial or any sugaring done since their new esthetician has started. However I can tell you I've always had amazing service in this department as well and I'm sure it has remained impeccable. I've had spray tans done by two different ladies and have loved the results of both. Just a warning for the faint of heart an actual person applies the tan for you. I would highly recommend facing any fears you have because it is worth any uncomfortable feelings you may have. The girls make you feel so comfortable and welcome. They also do a great job of listening to what you're looking for. Cheeky's spray tans aren't a one size fits all like a booth tan. The girls custom mix your shade to ensure it's absolutely perfect for your complexion and skin tone. Lastly Susan's massages are superb. I've only been seeing Susan for a few months but I have loved every appointment. She is such a warm and welcoming soul. She like every other member of the Cheeky Strut family is extremely professional and great at her job. Susan also specials in energy work and it has been life changing. Every time I leave an appointment I feel like I could take on the world. She is also a great listener. She's always there to listen and talk during a service or just be a gentle healing presence during your service. Whatever is bothering you be it stress, fatigue, or pain Susan will fix you up and make you feel like a whole new person. She has always given me a style that I love. She has done some very creative haircuts on me ranging from when i have had very short hair to very long hair. I'm usually an incredibly frugal person, opting for $15 haircuts with no frills. Now that I've gone to Cheeky Strut, I will never do that again. Sin is a wizard. I'm convinced that he's performing some sort of voodoo magic on my hair. He managed to turn my usual heavy, massively thick mass on my head into something sleek, shiny, and light. It felt like he cut off around half of my hair, yet it still looked long and had excellent body. I felt like a new person walking out of there. Wizardry, I tell you. The atmosphere is incredible, too. Very trendy, yet inviting. As soon as I walked in, they asked if I wanted anything to drink or needed anything. I am very, very particular about my hair and have a little panic attack every time I step into a salon. I got there on time and he was ready for me, no wait. He sat down with me for a few minutes and patiently listened to what I wanted to do. He paid attention and is a great combination of professional and friendly. The attention to detail on my precise haircut is what made it work so well. He is a perfectionist and made sure that it was absolutely symmetrical and even. It was clear that he wanted me to be happy and made sure I was comfortable. I am extremely pleased with my haircut and color and will go to him from now on, despite the hour long drive. The salon itself is nothing short of adorable. The decor is clean and modern and it's very open with lots of sunlight. The other stylists were friendly and seemed happy with their work and clients. It's rare to find a clean, unique salon with talented and friendly people. It definitely does not have that stuffy, uptight, judgmental feel that some salons have.
