I have been going to Design One Salon off Plainfield consistently for a year now, and love it. I get my nails done by Shannon and she is EXTREMELY talented. Not only is she detail oriented and friendly, but she is also knowledgeable of the products she uses on all clients. I think this speaks volumes to the spa because if my nail tech can speak about the product it makes me more comfortable about what is being put onto my body. The physical space is well kept and clean, and I have not felt worried about catching a foot fungus from the tubs (I know that's a thing at other spaces). The only downside is scheduling, I feel like Design One is a bit understaffed unfortunately, so getting in can be a challenge. I always try to book far in advance to make sure I get what I need. Although, I know they do sometimes have walk in appointments. Other services offered here include hair cuts, make up, and massages. I have not gotten my hair or make up done here, but I have gotten a few massages. The spa portion is very calm, and I think they do a decent job with the services. This review is for receptionist/management. I had a failed re-shellac manicure Wednesday, the polish was peeling off my nails within a few hours after my appointment, and I realized it wasn't hardened, it was rubbery. I reported this. Got a call a couple hours later. My phone says it lasted only 2 minutes. During the two minutes I was interrupted and informed 6-7 times that the technician was very upset, she was very upset, apparently very very upset. I actually started to apologize. What?! I had a $50 failed manicure. A brief apology from THEM to ME, and a refund was all that was required. Pulling me into staff drama was highly unprofessional and inappropriate. How or why management selected to inform the technician re the manicure in a way that upset her so badly is entirely their fault/responsibility. read more

Wow! I had a Make-up up-date Lesson with Chris yesterday and it was just FANTASTIC!!!! This woman is Wonderful with making you appear younger and feel good about your looks again! She explains things and demonstrates how to aply your daily make-up with-out taking you a long time each day too. Chris also explains about protecting your skin from aging and cancer protection. I just had a Kidney Transplant 1 1/2 year ago, and lost so much of my facial looks prior to kidney dialyis for almost 3 years, it really aged me and I felt so ugly and wasted but still thank-ful to be alive. If you love a good foil, this is the place to go. I was referred to my stylist by a mutual friend, who called her a blonde foil BOSS. She had lived up to her name, and I'm obsessed when I leave! Bailey is incredible at her craft. Befote going to Bailey at Design 1 Plainfield, I always felt brassy when I left a foil appointment. With her, I am always the tone I like and she is affordable. Booked over the phone and was disappointed to not get the services I actually thought I was getting. Asked about it when paying and just got a sorry. This visit i was treating my daughter as well so we both got massages and facials. They didn't even offer to adjust the bill to what i actually thought i was booking. I did tip 20 percent because the technicians were nice and they dont book the appointments. I'm going to start by saying I grew up going to another local chain salon and never felt seen. I called this place on a whim 2 years ago and will never go anywhere else. I have curly hair and anyone with curly hair knows how hard it is to find a good stylist that won't damage your hair when you're there. Lindsey is amazing!! She takes the time to understand what you want and make you feel great with your choices through her time with you. I have done big chops with her and I leave feeling listened to and my hair looking exactly how I want. 10/10 would recommend Lindsey for any curly girl looking for someone to trust with their crown!! read more

My mother bought me a $100 GC for my birthday. I went to use it today and was told there's nothing on it. Without a receipt I was out of luck. No receipt can be found of course. The manager on charge was rude and offored no resolution or way to help. First I'm told there's nothing they can do and then treated like crap. She even said the "reuse" the cards. If it wasn't for the people that work here, especially Laura Voss (my amazing stylist), this may have been a bit lower. There recent update to the facility, which has been greatly anticipated, is quite a flop. As soon as you walk in the door you are bombarded by product, which makes you feel as if you are in an Ulta. Don't get me wrong, I love a good Ulta trip, but I go to Ulta to shop and a salon to get pampered. The girls behind the counter are welcoming as usual, but they struggle to grab your attention through the confusion of entering. I 100% support an update to the salon, however I feel this design takes away from the great welcoming customer service the salon previously had. There is also not a lot of options for seating. Only 5 chairs were in the lobby and you constantly feel as though you are in everyone's way. The "spa" vibe has most definitely been lost. read more

I had recent hip surgery and they were all helpful and accommodating to make sure I could get in and out of chair, be comfortable soaking my feet and placing feet for trim, polish and dry time. I had made two appointments for a wedding. The first one for a trial hairstyle then one for the wedding day. The trial day was fine, I was all set to have them style my hair on wedding day. The day of wedding came, and I get a text message as I was walking out the door stating they need to reschedule appointment. I called the salon and they said they did not have anyone to do my hair that day at anytime. I scheduled this appointment months in advance and that they couldnt find any one to accommodate me was totally bad business practice. I will never go back to that salon or recommend anyone. Also the fact that I paid 60.00 for a trial and never got it styled the day of wedding. They will trick you into spending more! YIKES! I booked my appointment online for a hair cut and accent partial foil (including the specific stylist) which it confirms online precisely what you should spend. For me, it confirmed $150, so I booked it. At the appointment I discuss what "look" I like and exactly what I want, and she knows beforehand what services I booked online. She proceeds to go get the color and says no more and starts working on my hair. We finish up, it looks good, but nothing dramatic, just a trim off the ends and a touch up to the face highlights. We get to the counter to pay and she quick walks away. The woman at the counter says she did a full-foil and used toner too (because that's extra cost apparently) and my total is $220!!!! What! Never once did the stylist ask me or give me the option to what she was doing/applying and completely swindled me! The service was already done so I had to pay for it. This not the first time this same stylist has done this to me, but it is definitely the last! So disappointed! read more

I have had two separate cancellations of appoints within a hour of the appointment with no reasonable resolution. As significant is the complete disregard for the inconvenience this caused. I got a 60 minute hot stone massage and did not feel that it was worth $122 before tip. The masseuse did not use good technique - it was more like rubbing her hands on the same spot of my back than actually massaging. I circled my knees and hands as areas that were particularly painful for me, as I suffer from carpal tunnel. She did not spend any extra time on these areas. She focused mostly on my back even though it was supposed to be a full body massage. She completely skipped my legs. I also noted that the massage did not last a full 60 minutes. Usually that would not be a big deal, but when it is as expensive as it is, every minute counts! Additionally, the stones that she used were lukewarm. Some of them was flat out cold. I know this because the few that were hot felt WAY better. The day spa is an older, but nice enough facility. Trust me, there are much better places in Grand Rapids to get a massage - and at a better value. read more

The front desk girls were so nice! But I was not impressed with my hair stylist. I showed her the picture I was going for and told her I wanted curtain bangs. She informed me that the length I wanted were actually referred to as Hollywood bangs. Then, she asked her two assistants "what colors do you see here?" One said copper and she said "Yes copper and brown. So we will use..." then she made a plan for copper brown and said she would use gloss on my ends and it would naturally be lighter toward my ends because that's what I already had. She didn't ask me what color I saw... which was copper also but no brown. I wanted to look like a red head... not a brunet pretending to have red hair. They mixed the color, she applied it and I processed. Her assistant washed out the color and began blow drying, while the stylist cut someone else's hair. She didn't advise the assistant that my bangs should be blow dried any certain way to achieve the look I asked. And by the time she was done blow drying my hair, it was obvious it was one color- new growth to ends. Red brown. I did what anyone else would do and I said thanks it looks nice, paid the $150 some dollar bill (not including the tip and product I purchased) and left disappointed. It's no wonder 53% of women do their hair at home. I went to this salon looking for a service I didn't want to attempt at home and got no different result. I don't understand the assistant program if the stylist isn't going to be teaching them properly or advise them on how to give a proper consultation. It was all about what product I use in my hair or what kind of styling tools I use. They just wanted to sell... if she would've taken the time to give me what I wanted, she would have a return customer. read more

I've been to Design One several times. I used to go more frequently when Jessica, my massage therapist was still on staff. She was excellent! I've also had manicures and pedicures at both this location and the location at Rivertown. For a spa, Design One tends to be quite busy. If you're looking for total relaxation, the atmosphere might be a little intrusive as it is also a full service hair salon. I go to another salon for my hair care, so I've never tried their stylist. The staff however are always very attentive and accommodating. read more

My massage was 80 minutes (which I probably overdid it, because afterwards I did feel a little tender and sore) I selected the deep tissue massage. To many hidden fees! I went in for high lights & a cut and the stylist cut it the way SHE thought would look cute, NOT how I had asked her to. After she finished my high lights she did a deep conditioning treatment & added a ton of products to my hair without asking me. When I went to pay my bill was almost $200.00!!!!!! The deep conditioning & extra products cost extra $$, of course she never informed me any of that! I should have protested the bill, but I was so exhausted and angry I just paid it and left. I went to Design 1 on Plainfield in Grand Rapids in October 2012, just days before my daughter's wedding. I called ahead because a friend gifted me with a gift card and gave me a coupon which she said I would be able to use both because she checked. When I called to make the appointment, I also asked and was told there would be no problem. I said I was thinking of a body wave perm but not sure. I needed some body that would stay. When I got there the gal was nice, talked me out of a perm, and to go for highlighting. She said it would give me body and perms were outdated. I trusted her. I did like it. When I went to pay, of course I was presented with numerous products to also buy which I was considering. I gave the gal both the coupon and the gift card. She tried to figure out how to do both, called a gal over to help her and that gal said she could not do both. The first gal said she thought they could. She called someone else, and was told no. I was nearly in tears. It was just days before my daughter's wedding and finances were extremely tight. Even though I repeated that I was told on the phone I could use both, there was no way. So, I did not buy any additional products. I was not planning on spending nearly as much as I HAD to. After washing my hair and styling it, I noticed and OTHERS noticed, I definitely had more highlights on one side than the other. I told the gal how I would be styling my hair and she should have taken notice of that that it would look like there were no highlights on one side. It was VERY disheartening after spending all the money I did. Why am I writing this now? Because I am continually getting e-mails that they "miss me" and want me to make an appointment. NOT! I got a haircut the other day. I decided I wanted to cut my hair way shorter than what I've had my hair like for a long time. So I was a little nervous- but very excited! I was greeted by my hair stylist and she immediately made me feel as if I wasn't welcome. She continued to make comments that made me feel as if I was so low compared to her, and I knew nothing. I got to Design 1 for my hair usually. But I decided I wanted to "pamper" myself and do a pedicure one day. It was absolutely horrible. The girl told me she was new and complained that she did her own nails (no chip) on Monday and they were already falling off. It was a Saturday when I went. I was instantly worried. She didn't clean my cuticles, left on old no chip nail polish, and the nail job, in general, was sloppy. I went to pay and the front desk asked how my experience was. I'm not really the person to complain, but I showed her my nails and she was appalled. She called her manager and they asked me to come back on Monday to get them redone for free by a more experienced person. I said thank you and left. Came back Monday, the woman did MUCH better, but still didn't clean my cuticles, but whatever. I went to the front desk when I was done because I at least wanted to tip the second girl. But then they CHARGED me full price for it!! After they told me it​ would be free since my first experience was so terrible. Great customer service Design 1. I will never go there again for nails. The class and service of Design 1 is top notch. You get greeted as you walk though the door and are offered a drink. Its nice to sit and relax while you wait for your stylist. The stylists are professional and know what they are doing. I like to change my hairstyle from time to time and they were helpful in helping me pick out new styles and do them as well. read more

Design 1 took an appointment for my handicapped mother for a cut and color and refused her service today because she couldn't get out of her wheelchair while humiliating her and my sister in front of other customers. They lied about it to my sister who is a professional and was explicit about their needs when she made the appointment which was a mother's day gift. I go to design one on a monthly basis to see Ashley. She is a great stylist and delivers great services. Ashley is really flexible and is always willing to help you with new looks. I haven't found anyone as good as her when it comes to extensions and color. The staff is friendly at the desk and is prompt upon your arrival. read more
