Decided to check out Cheddar's outside the Linndale Mall on the NE side of Cedar Rapids. I really enjoy the made from scratch dishes and today I got the Cajun lunch special. Grilled blackened chicken atop a bed of white rice and what looks like red beans. Very flavorful but quite salty so I recommend insuring you have plenty of beverage while consuming. I also ordered the broccoli casserole on the side as it has been stated being the most popular side dish and I agree fully. Broccoli still has a pleasant crunch and the cheddar is delicious. The hostess and my waitress were very attentive and treated me very well. The decor and lighting adds to the comfort of the food and the wait staff. The restroom and my table were very clean. When I mentioned this to Hannah she apologized perfusely and fixed my order immediately at no additional charge. She was so lovely and kind. We sat at the bar as it was a 20-35 min wait for seating. The bus boys had not been there to clear the people's plates before us. It was 25 mins before he swung around. The bartender who was our server pretty much didn't acknowledge our presence for 10 mins. I get it, she was busy making drinks. She finally came to take our order and did our drink order then as well. Drinks took another bit to get. Food came in a reasonable amount of time. She gave us our check, it wasn't ours. Normally Cheddar's of Cedar Rapids isn't too bad of a place to eat. However, this past Sunday evening it was a disaster. The place was only about half full so they weren't getting slammed. After being seated it took the waiter a good 5 minutes to show up. By then I had memorized the menu and was ready to order. I ordered the Cornmeal White Fish Platter and a Coke. When the waiter brought my drink he carried it with his hand around the top of the glass. Really sanitary! When the meal arrived I cut into the fish and it was completely raw. White fish isn't supposed to be grey. I finally got the waiters attention and showed him. He said he would make me a new plate. No more than 2 minutes later he brought the plate back. All he did was put the entire thing in the microwave oven for about a minute and brought it back out. Now the steamed broccoli was overcooked. He said a manager would come talk with me. That never happened. The last piece of fish was the thickest and it was still raw. So in summary..... Raw fish served, they tried to just nuke the entire dinner to cook it again, never got a beverage refill, there manager didn't give a crap and the waiter was incompetent. read more

And the location here in Cedar Rapids in particular has always been an enjoyable experience, but tonight I don't know what is going on behind the curtain.... To be fair it is a Friday night, at the busiest time of the night and cold as hell outside - that said, everything since walking through the door has been an epic fail... 1) after being seated, we were not waited on for nearly another 20 minutes. when the waiter showed up he expressed that there was some confusion at the front desk and we were not assigned a waiter an he expressed his apologies. 2) when our drinks and appetizer (chips and queso) came out... - we were not provided with plates or silverware. - there was a large piece of plastic bag in the queso, the waiter was notified and said he would tell the kitchen staff, nothing came of this and we were not even offered a apology nor a refund for this item. - and once the plates came out, they were still dirty with some sort of nasty red stuff on them. 3) at this point we finally received the complimentary croissants which were already cold 4) when food came out we still had not received silverware and had to request and then wait several more minutes for them. 5) food itself was great, but no one ever refilled our drinks at any point 6) I also placed an order and a drink to go, upon review the order was missing items and I had to notify the waiter of this so he could get the missing item. 7) Never did receive the to-go drink I requested. Why this whole experience, minus the plastic bag in the dip, could possibly be chalked up to a busy night and not enough staff, it still made for a poor dining experience for us all. First, my fiancé and I absolutely love Cheddars! The scratch chicken fingers are delicious; however, they were out of chicken yesterday evening. We were told it would be an hour to an hour and a half for the chicken to thaw out before we could order it so we sat in the bar. We ordered queso with salsa and chips. We literally received bottom of the bag chips the pieces were literally not larger than a fingernail. We politely requested chips and after a lengthy wait they were brought to us. I thoroughly enjoy the variety of the menu at Cheddar's, as there are always seasonal dishes on the menu. I have had their salmon before, and was delighted to see a Salmon and Strawberry Salad on the menu today. The greens were fresh and the blackened salmon was serve hot. I asked for the Strawberry Vinaigrette and the Vermont Honey dressings on the side, since I did not know which one I would prefer. Our server was very happy to oblige. After testing them I chose the VH. My son chose the Tilapia and Shrimp with Mango Salsa and the portion was generous and well prepared. My wife chose her favorite menu item, the Chicken Pot Pie and was very pleased. We usually only get one appetizer, which is the chips and queso, with ground beef of course. It is reasonably priced, and is enough for 3 people, allowing to prime your appetite without getting full. The service has always been prompt, and the dining area is very nice, and especially clean. You can't eat ambience, but it really is a nice place. Serving sizes are very nice, and as I said there is always something for everyone on the menu. While it is not fine dining, with small portions, the food is always prepared fresh. The restrooms are clean, and well maintained. Ive been to cheddars about 3 times and never really impressed. Decided to try it one more time. I had the quesadilla off the appetizer menu. It was nice and crispy with lots of chicken, but really short on cheese. It came with a little lettuce, sour cream, and Pico on the side. I had to ask 3 times for more sour cream and each time got about a tablespoon full. Not nearly enough. I would have been more than happy to pay to get a decent amount. I will say the coffee was very good. The service was good and the waitress was friendly and helpful. I wasn't really a big fan of the Pico, but I know it was my taste and not the preparation. So, contrary to my initial review after a bad experience, we went back and had a much improved dinner. The baked potato soup was delicious. A bowl was plenty to share with my wife. The ceasar salad was very good with shaved parmesan cheese. The sweet spicy chicken with shrimp was a good amount of food for under 600 calories and the flavors were spot on. The chicken fried chicken had a wonderful breading with a moist and meaty breast. The mashed potatoes were really good and the Texas toast was perfectly toasted. My second visit in a month. My food was very good. I ordered the chicken pot pie and had salad for my side. The salad was flavorful and fresh. However, I was confused why the pot pie, which I wanted to remain hot, was served at the exact same time. Wanting it to remain hot I placed the bread plate onto the pie to preserve the heat. Our server seemed to be overly efficient, bringing the check before we were 1/2 way thru the salad. Happily the chicken pie was delicious AND hot. Cheddars has turned into a "go to" favorite for my family. We have a 2 year old and 1 month old and it works out perfect (yes we go a little early, but that's to avoid any wait, can you imagine trying to wait with a 2 year old?) First off let's talk food. I have tried several items (buffalo wrapper, monte cristo, onion rings, burger, fish tacos) and never once been disappointed. I have yet to find a bad item on the menu. Second, the service. We have always had great service from all the friendly staff. Every waiter, waitress, hostess, and was always smiling and willing to help you. Our last visit we had a great waitress named Taylor. She was terrific! Never had to ask for drinks. Also she was more than happy to bring out our sons food early to keep him entertained (going out to eat with a 2 year old is tough). Last note is the costs. This is one place you get a lot of great food for great value. We had 4 drinks, 4 meals, appetizer, and kids meal all for just under $60 (plus we took two boxes of leftovers home). I would most definitely recommend this place to anyone asking. read more

A little noisy like others have mentioned but I myself didn't find it to overwhelming. To my surprise I had a burger that was cooked to perfection! And big in proportion. For starters we booked a specific table a week or two in advance. We haven't been able to do reservations but see were this time. Well unfortunately as I was afraid, our table was in use. So we had to sit in another location. Just not a fan of chairs. Which is WHY WE MADE THE RESERVATION!! The server was fine and the manager provided some free appetizers. After ordering our food, 2 of our group of 8 had requested well done burgers that were visibly pink in the center. One was replaced the other did not want anything else. Overall a very disappointing experience considering we had family over from Des Moines and this has been our traditional Christmas family meal. I'm moving my 4 star rating from a previous review to a 5 star, and well deserved. Date night now includes Cheddar's at least once a month. We had dinner there last night and it was just as great as the last time. I'm not going to go into the details of the dinner, it was great, but I would rather dwell on the small things they do that mean a great deal. First, their dinner salads are sumptious and satisfying, containing a variety of vegetables that blend perfectly. Restaurants should never overlook the importance of salads to some people. Second, you can get a 16 oz marguerita for under $5 anytime. Those of us that drink on a budget really appreciate that, and there are more than one to choose from. Third, their menu doesn't read like a novel. It's all contained on one placard, with plenty of options, just no confussion. Fourth, their napkins are the best of any restaurant. I know, most may not think napkins are important, but these are high quality and large, and it's the small things.... Fifth, although they are one of the best values in CR, they still offer specials from time to time. This time was a free 5 piece chicken strips, and they didn't scrimp. Now that's a straight forward special and greatly appreciated. We were able to get the attention of the manager, and were honored to have him sit with us for a minute to applaud his restaurant. And that's when it dawned on my the sixth thing. The manager was great, intelligent, polite, well spoken, and grateful for our patronage and opinion. This use to be our families favorite. They slowly have gotten rid of almost all our favorite dishes (bbq chicken dinner) the menu has gotten small in ways like not a lot of variety from other restaurants. Today we went and we normally get the honey butter croissant appetizer and they use to come with 4 now they only give 2! They apparently started to give people a complimentary croissant (which is nice) but I feel like they almost have to because if they don't market something free people will see how they have changed and see no reason to come. I feel like there is no reason to eat here anymore because everything they have I can make better at home or I can get it from anywhere. Great service in the bar area the other night. We weren't drinking and the service didn't change for the worse like it does in some places. The wife was ecstatic that this Cheddar's has the dijon chicken and mushrooms on the menu. Some of the Cheddar's menus are different regionally. We're always guilty of eating too many appetizers at this chain and taking home a lot of the food. Tonight was no different. Their cheese fries and their Wisconsin cheese bites are quite alright. Get ranch with the cheese bites unless you just love marinara. Had the raspberry lemonade, but it was super tart and sugared. Not bad, just not for me. Well a good measure of a chain restaurant it's it's service. Chain's can't typically compete in the quality department, their food being fairly limited to middle of the road cuisine. It's nearly impossible to be a Swiss army knife of restaurants and excel in any one thing. That's not to say it's not good; it's very good for what it is, I'd say 5 stars good in it's class. That said, when you can serve hot food, approx. 90% all served at the same time (with just a couple stragglers shortly behind), with no mistakes AND with just 1 server (who was friendly, attentive and sharp, a rare commodity these days.
