It feels like you are eating in someone's home. It is also surrounded by little shops that we meandered through after our meal. Despite having a strong uniqueness factor, the actually food itself was nothing special. My wife went for standard breakfast fare (eggs, bacon, home-style potatoes, and toast) and I went with a chicken caesar wrap with chicken and wild rice soup. We could have easily made the same food if we ate at home. I'm glad we gave this place a try, but we probably wouldn't go out of our way to come here again.

The Youngville Cafe is situated about twenty minutes west of Cedar Rapids, on U.S. Route 30, the old Lincoln Highway. It's an old-fashioned cafe that preserves the traditional menu and style of the family-owned cafes that dotted the Lincoln Highway during the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. These cafes were mini oases along America's first transnational highway. The Youngsville Cafe itself is attached to an old Skelly filling station (guests who remember the 1950s will recognize the trademark Skelly red-and-white gas pumps outside). Because it is owned by a non-profit historical organization and operated entirely by volunteers, the Youngville Cafe is only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 11 am to 1:30 p.m., and Fridays from 3:30 - 6 pm. On Tuesdays, their menu features a soup of the day and sandwiches. On Thursdays, their menu features burgers, tenderloins, sandwiches, and a selection of side salads. They always serve soda, coffee, lemonade, and a large variety of different pies (with ice cream available). On Fridays they only serve pie and ice cream, but they sometimes host a farmer's market. You should visit Youngville for the food and the experience. The food can seem simple at first, even underwhelming. Don't be fooled: it's all homemade, extremely good, and true to the cafe's Lincoln Highway roots. I recommend the loose meat sandwiches, a deceptively simple Midwestern classic (made famous by Maid-Rite), which should be eaten with pickles, mustard, and ketchup. After lunch, you must get pie. The pies here are the real deal: fresh and perfectly baked on homemade crusts. You should come for the pie alone. The experience of Youngville is half the fun. The walls are decorated with maps, signs, and memorabilia from the Lincoln Highway era. The staff is friendly and fun to talk to. You'll probably give your cash to a bearded man behind the register: he is extremely knowledgeable about the history of the Lincoln Highway and the Youngville Cafe. Because the cafe is listed on the National Registry of Historical Landmarks, you should think of it as a kind of dining museum.
