If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. We ended up at Pullman Bar & Diner three mornings in a row during our trip, and honestly, it became one of the highlights of our weekend. Every single thing we ordered felt fresh, thoughtful, and just really well done. My kids were obsessed with the chocolate chip pancakes (which says a lot), and my dad and I worked our way through a few different dishes. The biscuits and gravy were comforting and rich without being too heavy, and even the simple eggs were cooked perfectly. But the standout? The breakfast tacos. They were insane. The pork was seasoned perfectly, super flavorful without being overwhelming, and everything just worked together so well. Also, do not skip the fresh squeezed orange juice or the local sourdough with homemade preserves. You can taste the difference. It's one of those places where you can tell they really care about the ingredients. Service was warm and easy, and the vibe just makes you want to sit and stay a while. The rave reviews this place had really stood up to the test. I came in questioning if it would be as good as what I've read online and it definitely was! I opted for the pork chop and had room for dessert after. The portion size was a little small so I would've liked the protein to have been paired more with a starch, but the flavors were amazing. Space is small, it has limited seating and it gets hot when full. The kitchen puts off quite a bit of heat and there are a bunch of people. Service was extra fast, you can visually see the servers running around. Food came out kind of slow, it was busy after all. Waters never went empty. We got a double "Pullmans" burger with bacon added on, The fries were outstanding, perfectly salted and fried. Burger was a perfect We got a wings and legs with sauces, I didn't even need to try it with the sauce, they were amazingly seasoned and made my mouth water for more. We got the salmon salad, I'm not a big salad person, but it was pretty damn good. And finally the Mo Burger, the flavors were beautifully balanced. The avocado compliments the natural sweetness of the burger. And for desert we got the banana foster, it's honestly outstanding. I have no other words. Started off with an old-fashioned and my GF ended up getting the black and blue drink, off of our waiters suggestion. Both were really well received and tasty great. My only complaint would be that it was a little light on the ham, but it was still amazing and I couldn't finish it anyways. ‍ But it had a rich béchamel sauce that was perfect for dipping their hand cut fries. SO GOOD!!!!!! (Truly one of the highlights of our night.). Tried the GF's fried chicken and quickly found out why it was an award-winning chicken. Very juicy and flavorful. As for the interior of the place, it reminds me of an upscale diner. Very cool and modern. Our server, Hank, was out of this world. Made sure to check on us, keep our drinks full and offer suggestions. In a world where good waitresses and waiters are hard to come by, he was a breath of fresh air. Can't wait to go back! Ps. It's a great atmosphere if you're into places that are a little noisy and a whole lot of cozy! It's a very well kept establishment that definitely gives you that downtown vibe. The thing that stood out to me most though is THE PEOPLE. The staff are an absolute joy and I love how you can talk to the chefs too while they cook. The food is great but the menu is a lot smaller than I thought it would be. That's a good thing for me because I can never make up my mind! As a "Biscuits & Gravy" connoisseur of southern heritage -- I ordered the classic -- my all time favorite biscuits & gravy -- adding a fried chicken breast with an over easy egg that was of sensational taste and spot on presentation. This diner is the real deal that allows you to select from an array of delightful choices with the aid of a wait staff that checks on you, and that delivers your food hot when it hits the window. Parking is always an issue in a downtown college town ( Go Hawks) so be prepared to do some creative looking. The menu provides a lot of reasonably priced dishes that are somewhat above average. I am still trying to understand what is a"convenience fee" that is added to the bill. My only drawback while sitting close to the windows to mid floor there were a few dead flies on the window sill which should be checked to make sure they are cleared before seating a guest. Nonetheless, the total environment was trendy with sturdy tables and cloth napkins for a casual afternoon of "me time" enjoyment. read more

Did not know what to expect when we were walking in but it's a modern style of a diner and the music just sets the vibe. There's no TVs, so if the game is on, prolly best to go somewhere else. As for the food: we ordered the pot stickers and kitchen fries for starters. The pot stickers outshined the kitchen fries, but that's only because they were top notch. We also ordered the fried chicken with a side of the prince sauce. Arguably one of the best tasting hot sauces I've had. It does have a kick but it's not overwhelming to where you can't enjoy it. The Pullman Burger was pretty epic as well. If I had to rate the burger and chicken, I would give a very very minuscule edge to the burger. Really depends on what you're in the mood for. read more

Chef Matthew Prince has cultivated an amazing menu and impressed me with every bite. I had the (excellent) Pullman Burger and was surprised by the delicious side salad that came with it. The hand rolled dumplings with a house take on XO sauce were toothsome and addictive, and now I hear they're going in for tapas as the weather warms up? Thoughtful and attentive staff read me and the rest of the room with a skill that only comes from solid training, and the atmosphere was delightful... My only hesitation is that the Pullman is part of the same group as St. Burch Tavern where I had a very negative experience with price gouging and apparently others have as well. One enters through a nice, modern vestibule, much needed against the weather. Unfortunately, things fell apart from there. After seating in an irregularly-shaped booth, we started with fingerling potatoes served in salt and approximately nacho cheese. Dinner took about 30 minutes to arrive. Dripping with heavy sauces and much over-salted, my warmish burger was ok, but the salt on the fries was over the top. The couple in the booth behind us also complained of too much salt. The waitstaff was sympathetic to the delay and comped our 1-round of drinks. The decor is a downer (except the great flooring) and the loud music necessary to cover up the clatter of the exposed grill incommensurate with the dim lighting. I suggest rolling it back to classic mid-century diner. One positive was the relatively reasonable prices, but I don't intend on returning. read more

Pullman is a great elevated diner experience on the U Iowa campus. It's certainly busy during peak brunch time, but the ability to get on the waitlist via Yelp makes it easy. Parking is tricky too so either plan extra time or grab a spot at one of the $1/hr parking garages around. The service was fast and pleasant, but nothing out of the ordinary. The food however was spectacular. We ordered the huevos (added pork) and the breakfast tacos (added avocado), both of which resulted in cleaned plates. The drinks from the bar were also quite tasty. I recommend the French 75. There's indoor and outdoor seating. Inside is pretty noisy and crowded but certainly cute. If you want a bit of a quieter experience maybe try the outside seating. read more
