If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. We ended up at Pullman Bar & Diner three mornings in a row during our trip, and honestly, it became one of the highlights of our weekend. Every single thing we ordered felt fresh, thoughtful, and just really well done. My kids were obsessed with the chocolate chip pancakes (which says a lot), and my dad and I worked our way through a few different dishes. The biscuits and gravy were comforting and rich without being too heavy, and even the simple eggs were cooked perfectly. But the standout? The breakfast tacos. They were insane. The pork was seasoned perfectly, super flavorful without being overwhelming, and everything just worked together so well. Also, do not skip the fresh squeezed orange juice or the local sourdough with homemade preserves. You can taste the difference. It's one of those places where you can tell they really care about the ingredients. Service was warm and easy, and the vibe just makes you want to sit and stay a while. When we arrived during peak lunch time on the Saturday during the Pride parade, we were surprisingly seated right away. I enjoyed a ginormous (and delicious!) cappuccino and the Glazy Susan which was a breakfast sandwich that was so flavorful. Truly amazing food! Each item was so delicious! The fries with bacon jam were honestly our favorite fries we've had anywhere. As well, the s'mores expresso I had was insanely good. I opted for the pork chop and had room for dessert after. The portion size was a little small so I would've liked the protein to have been paired more with a starch, but the flavors were amazing. There's some true culinary and talent behind this place. Not only do they exemplify with the open Kitchen concept, but the menu is just very well done. The Fried chicken and burgers seemed a little heavy for me as we were just driving through to Kansas City so I opted for a few things from the happy hour menu and appetizer menu. By a few, I mean five because after the first one being so good, I just kept ordering. I can't begin to explain how good of a decision. It was to stop and have an early dinner here. Space is small, it has limited seating and it gets hot when full. The kitchen puts off quite a bit of heat and there are a bunch of people. Service was extra fast, you can visually see the servers running around. Food came out kind of slow, it was busy after all. Waters never went empty. We got a double "Pullmans" burger with bacon added on, The fries were outstanding, perfectly salted and fried. Burger was a perfect We got a wings and legs with sauces, I didn't even need to try it with the sauce, they were amazingly seasoned and made my mouth water for more. We got the salmon salad, I'm not a big salad person, but it was pretty damn good. And finally the Mo Burger, the flavors were beautifully balanced. Ate here during the jazz festival. It was out of my price range when I lived here for school years ago so I'd never been. The inside is far too noisy for anyone to enjoy a meal, but there was outdoor seating. The woman seating people was quite scowling for some reason, but the waiter was good. We had two salads (one with beets, the other salmon and wheat berries ) and both were outstanding. Flourless torte was also very good. I give it lots of stars for the food, but since the inside is pretty uninhabitable I would only eat here again if there was outdoor seating available, and suitable weather to go with it. read more

The thing that stood out to me most though is THE PEOPLE. The staff are an absolute joy and I love how you can talk to the chefs too while they cook. The food is great but the menu is a lot smaller than I thought it would be. That's a good thing for me because I can never make up my mind! We asked if they could put it atop any lettuce, and it came atop literally a few sad shreds. (And it's not as if they don't have greens on their menu.) Parking is always an issue in a downtown college town ( Go Hawks) so be prepared to do some creative looking. The menu provides a lot of reasonably priced dishes that are somewhat above average. I am still trying to understand what is a"convenience fee" that is added to the bill. My only drawback while sitting close to the windows to mid floor there were a few dead flies on the window sill which should be checked to make sure they are cleared before seating a guest. Did not know what to expect when we were walking in but it's a modern style of a diner and the music just sets the vibe. There's no TVs, so if the game is on, prolly best to go somewhere else. As for the food: we ordered the pot stickers and kitchen fries for starters. The pot stickers outshined the kitchen fries, but that's only because they were top notch. We also ordered the fried chicken with a side of the prince sauce. Arguably one of the best tasting hot sauces I've had. It does have a kick but it's not overwhelming to where you can't enjoy it. Pullman is a great elevated diner experience on the U Iowa campus. It's certainly busy during peak brunch time, but the ability to get on the waitlist via Yelp makes it easy. Parking is tricky too so either plan extra time or grab a spot at one of the $1/hr parking garages around. The service was fast and pleasant, but nothing out of the ordinary. The food however was spectacular. We ordered the huevos (added pork) and the breakfast tacos (added avocado), both of which resulted in cleaned plates. The drinks from the bar were also quite tasty. I recommend the French 75. There's indoor and outdoor seating. Inside is pretty noisy and crowded but certainly cute. If you want a bit of a quieter experience maybe try the outside seating. read more

My only hesitation is that the Pullman is part of the same group as St. Burch Tavern where I had a very negative experience with price gouging and apparently others have as well.
