Thanks to the owner who cooks and the great chefs, as well as the other owner who is present everyday to greet and converse with customers! The owners have a great, powerful story about how they started. This diner has a very warm atmosphere and you feel welcomed everytime you step inside. It has a nice nostalgic feel that draws in people of all ages. I've had many of the menu items and I can say that everything was cooked as you expect it to be. Soft, cheesy omelettes with fresh vegetables. Soft scrambled eggs that just have that "home cooked by your grandma when you were a kid" feel. Crispy hash-browns. Sausage is great. Toast is always buttered and crisp. Man. Gonna go eat there tomorrow now that I'm talking about them, lol. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and hospitality received here. You can ask for hashbrowns crispy which I liked. Pancake was disappointing. Menu says fluffy but it was flat and thin. My son said biscuits and gravy were ok. We've driven by and finally stopped in for breakfast. We both had chicken fried steak and enjoyed the steak & gravy very much! The eggs were real eggs, not liquid product. Excellent service. There was a short wait and our waitress (who was maybe the owner) brought us a cup of coffee while we waited! The food was all very good. Biscuits and gravy, waffles, hashbrowns, scrambled eggs, and bacon was all very good. We are from out of town and we will definitely come here when we come back to Cedar Falls! Family owned and operated, these are salt-of-the-earth people. So welcoming, such delicious breakfasts and great service! We just ate there this Sunday. It's always busy but the wait never seems too long. Even short-staffed, their staff are quick with a smile and always so nice. We love the pancakes and the many other traditional diner menu choices. Food was ok, not great, but not bad. The coffee is decent and the food portions are pretty decent too. The service always seems slow and not too friendly to us. The parking lot and sidewalks are a mess, they really need to fix some of that as my parents nearly fell twice on separate visits. Try to go when it's not too busy, the service should be better then. We were staying in nearby Waterloo and decided to trek the 8 or so miles to Cedar Falls and Gravy's Diner based on previous good reviews. Spoiler alert, this was one of the best breakfasts I've ever eaten! My husband and I both ordered the Veggie omelets and while you think you know what you're going to get, this omelet was the most fluffy, ingredient-loaded and delicious I have ever tasted. Seriously, what's the secret?? I also ordered a 1/2 order of their infamous biscuits and gravy and again, one of the best I've ever had. The biscuits were tender and moist and the gravy was really well seasoned. The atmosphere was also pleasing to us. This is a bustling old fashioned looking diner but with plenty of seating. When places are listed as "mom and pop" restaurants, Gravy's is the real deal. Dad was cooking, mom was minding the register and other tasks, a daughter was our very friendly server and an aunt was also helping in the kitchen. There's something so endearing about a place where you hear things like, "Dad, I need a ham and mushroom omelet"! Speaking of Dad, his grill is in plain view from the tables and we were amazed at how quickly he was getting food out to tables, all by himself mind you. We'd love to know more about his background as a chef because he clearly knew his way around a kitchen and amazing food. We travel quite often and have sampled good food and not so good food, but Gravy's made us wish we lived locally so we could dine in much more often. Thanks for such a great experience! read more

A great no frills Diner. The staff is extremely friendly. Its a true Ma and Pa shop.. The food is good. Great portions/prices. The decor is classic diner decor. Only gripes would be the coffee was a packet of coffee you'd see in a hotel single serving coffee maker and very blah. Not much variety in hot sauces so hope you like Tabasco. I got the western omelet and a half order of biscuits and gravy. Omelet came with hash browns and a side of toast so I got cinnamon and raisin toast. 1/2 order of biscuits and gravy was 2 biscuits and tons of seasoned gravy. If you're looking for a diner to get some hearty breakfast I'd rather come here to a place with some personality than a village inn or Perkins. read more

The owners are terrific and nice. When they first opened we ate there twice a week. But then they started closing at 2 everyday and it just didn't work for us to go there. Sunday mornings they are so busy and chaotic it's not worth the trip. There breakfast is great but I've eaten most everything on the menu. My fav is the western omelet. read more

I cant believe I have never been to Gravys Diner! Great spot for brunch in the CedarLoo area. The atmosphere was awesome, loved everything from the tile to the ceiling! The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. I like when employees know whats good in the place where they work! The hashbrowns were cooked perfectly and not overly greasy. This was our first visit to Gravy's. The staff was all very friendly. The food was delicious and tasted homemade! Gravy's Diner was pretty busy, with people patiently waiting for a table on a Saturday morning in small town Iowa following a 5K walk/run to raise awareness for Cancer Survivors. We were a party of four with a toddler. Our pretty waitress wore glasses and a Wartburg T-Shirt. Not hers, it was her friend who was the Wartburger, she explained with a big smile. The first items arrived at 14-minutes, not a bad ticket time. In fact, it was a great ticket time considering how busy they were. And that food was pretty good. Only problem was that my chicken fried steak did not arrive along with the other food. In fact, it took another seven minutes for it to arrive at our table for a ticket time of 21-minutes. Even worse the steak was soggy and bland. The gravy had no flavor. Not good. So what happened? It was obvious that as it came time to plate the eggs, waffles and bacon, the cook realized he had forgotten to deep fry the steak. Doh. So I waited for a frozen chicken fried steak to deep fry while my friends ate. They were halfway through their meals before mine arrived. The cook should have simply explained to the waitress what had happened and begged forgiveness. I would have been okay with that. We all make mistakes. Better than waiting and waiting without knowing what is going on. But instead, he lowered his standards for customer service AND served sub par food, failing to respect me as a customer. I politely and respectfully talked to the waitress about my dissatisfaction and told her the meal was unacceptable, I also let her know without a doubt that I knew it was NOT her fault and I would not stiff her on the tip because of the LAZY COOK. Which brings up the real point of taking the time to write this review. It's NEVER cool to take out your frustration on the waitress, most of whom work really, really hard to take care of us. Instead, you vent to your heart's delight on Yelp and vote with your dollars. There are plenty of other restaurants in CF/Waterloo who serve good food and who have cooks who know how to properly run a kitchen. Thank you again, dear waitress. We are cool. read more

The food was quite good. Perhaps the best country gravy I've had at a restaurant. Chicken Fried steak was prepared very nicely. Sometimes they can be a bit tough. Eggs were good, they're eggs, nothing special. I felt a bit robbed when it came to the hashbrowns. They were very good but didn't seem like a whole were there. Coffee was delicious. Over all very good. Would get 5 stars if..... -Plastic Plates and coffee cup. Very cheap. I hate the sound of Fork on a plastic plate. When cutting my steak, I had to make sure I didn't put too much pressure, for fear I'd flip my plate up. Should really invest in better plates and coffee mugs. -Ventilation. Knew as soon as I walked in I was going to smell like grease when my meal was over and I was right. So unless you plan on showering after breakfast I do not suggest stopping in. Side note- saw reviews about the staff. I wasn't served by children and the waitress seemed to know a lot of people's orders that are regulars so I think they worked out the rotating staff issue. Nothing to note about the staff. I could have used more coffee warm ups but I like my coffee hot. My cup was never empty which was good. read more

Nice big space compared to some diners we've been to. Even though it was a Saturday morning, we were able to seat ourselves right away. I had the waffle combo, and it was so good! The waffles are thinner than I'm used to, but I has more pockets, which means being able to hold even more syrup. Hubby had the chicken fried steak, and the gravy was so homey and delicious. read more
