Cajun Chicken Bowl w/ Broccoli Cheese Casserole
    Gregory G.

Decided to check out Cheddar's outside the Linndale Mall on the NE side of Cedar Rapids. I really enjoy the made from scratch dishes and today I got the Cajun lunch special. Grilled blackened chicken atop a bed of white rice and what looks like red beans. Very flavorful but quite salty so I recommend insuring you have plenty of beverage while consuming. I also ordered the broccoli casserole on the side as it has been stated being the most popular side dish and I agree fully. Broccoli still has a pleasant crunch and the cheddar is delicious. The hostess and my waitress were very attentive and treated me very well. The decor and lighting adds to the comfort of the food and the wait staff. The restroom and my table were very clean. Be forewarned though, the booths are well worn and will sink upon seating. All in all my bill was $20 and I'd say it's worth every penny. Will definitely return to try their pot pie. Yum!

The off-color piece at the top of the bowl is a chunk of plastic was found in the bowl of cheese when we were eating.

Cheddars is absolutely one of my favorite eateries and it is usually a great place to bring the fam for a bite to eat. And the location here in Cedar Rapids in particular has always been an enjoyable experience, but tonight I don't know what is going on behind the curtain.... To be fair it is a Friday night, at the busiest time of the night and cold as hell outside - that said, everything since walking through the door has been an epic fail... 1) after being seated, we were not waited on for nearly another 20 minutes. when the waiter showed up he expressed that there was some confusion at the front desk and we were not assigned a waiter an he expressed his apologies. 2) when our drinks and appetizer (chips and queso) came out... - we were not provided with plates or silverware. - there was a large piece of plastic bag in the queso, the waiter was notified and said he would tell the kitchen staff, nothing came of this and we were not even offered a apology nor a refund for this item. - and once the plates came out, they were still dirty with some sort of nasty red stuff on them. 3) at this point we finally received the complimentary croissants which were already cold 4) when food came out we still had not received silverware and had to request and then wait several more minutes for them. 5) food itself was great, but no one ever refilled our drinks at any point 6) I also placed an order and a drink to go, upon review the order was missing items and I had to notify the waiter of this so he could get the missing item. 7) Never did receive the to-go drink I requested. Why this whole experience, minus the plastic bag in the dip, could possibly be chalked up to a busy night and not enough staff, it still made for a poor dining experience for us all. Tonight was a 1 out of 5.

First, my fiancé and I absolutely love Cheddars! The scratch chicken fingers are delicious; however, they were out of chicken yesterday evening. We were told it would be an hour to an hour and a half for the chicken to thaw out before we could order it so we sat in the bar. We ordered queso with salsa and chips. We literally received bottom of the bag chips the pieces were literally not larger than a fingernail. We politely requested chips and after a lengthy wait they were brought to us. Needless to say after our appetizer we left and ate dinner elsewhere. The service that the bartender gave us was excellent. She was very professional and polite and apologized for everything.

    Strawberry and Salmon Salad

I thoroughly enjoy the variety of the menu at Cheddar's, as there are always seasonal dishes on the menu. I have had their salmon before, and was delighted to see a Salmon and Strawberry Salad on the menu today. The greens were fresh and the blackened salmon was serve hot. I asked for the Strawberry Vinaigrette and the Vermont Honey dressings on the side, since I did not know which one I would prefer. Our server was very happy to oblige. After testing them I chose the VH. My son chose the Tilapia and Shrimp with Mango Salsa and the portion was generous and well prepared. My wife chose her favorite menu item, the Chicken Pot Pie and was very pleased. We usually only get one appetizer, which is the chips and queso, with ground beef of course. It is reasonably priced, and is enough for 3 people, allowing to prime your appetite without getting full. The service has always been prompt, and the dining area is very nice, and especially clean. You can't eat ambience, but it really is a nice place. Serving sizes are very nice, and as I said there is always something for everyone on the menu. While it is not fine dining, with small portions, the food is always prepared fresh. The restrooms are clean, and well maintained. Kudos to the staff at the Cedar Rapids Cheddar's, they do good work.

    Chicken quesadilla

Ive been to cheddars about 3 times and never really impressed. Decided to try it one more time. I had the quesadilla off the appetizer menu. It was nice and crispy with lots of chicken, but really short on cheese. It came with a little lettuce, sour cream, and Pico on the side. I had to ask 3 times for more sour cream and each time got about a tablespoon full. Not nearly enough. I would have been more than happy to pay to get a decent amount. I will say the coffee was very good. The service was good and the waitress was friendly and helpful. I wasn't really a big fan of the Pico, but I know it was my taste and not the preparation. Unfortunately about 30 minutes after eating I didn't feel well. I'm not sure what was wrong, but I probably won't be back

    Sweet spicy chicken and shrimp

So, contrary to my initial review after a bad experience, we went back and had a much improved dinner. The baked potato soup was delicious. A bowl was plenty to share with my wife. The ceasar salad was very good with shaved parmesan cheese. The sweet spicy chicken with shrimp was a good amount of food for under 600 calories and the flavors were spot on. The chicken fried chicken had a wonderful breading with a moist and meaty breast. The mashed potatoes were really good and the Texas toast was perfectly toasted. The green beans were a good pairing with this dish. Glad we came back to give this place a second chance. The service was fast, friendly, and attentive.

The vibe of Hip-Stir ha always been cool and kinda niche and this was no exception. If you don't know that they changed up their menu.. they did. It's not bad by any means, but I am pretty heartbroken about them removing the Spinach Artichoke dip. It was the best around and I'll be overjoyed when it returns. The new menu still features ramen, sandwiches and other yummy dishes. I ordered a side of Mac and cheese with my entree and the food was out in about 20 minutes which is great! Unfortunately my Mac and cheese was forgotten- our server apologized and went to "get that started", no worries. The next time our server was at our table I inquired about it again since it had been about 10 minutes, but she had forgotten yet again. She rushed back to "get it started", ok. At this point everyone was getting full and I didn't even want it anymore, but she returned a few minutes later with it. A little frustrating. The ramen has changed, unfortunately. My sister ordered the spicy pork (which has historically been amazing) and didn't even finish it, which is pretty weird for her lol. I tasted nothing but soy sauce and spice. I'm not sure where the aromatics went, but they need to bring them back asap. Don't order the carrot cake. It was served over coffee (yes, hot coffee) which ruined it. The cake was overly soggy and tasted of nothing but the coffee flavor. I'm sure it would have been great without it, the frosting looked great. I'll probably be back and love supporting the Fun not Fancy group in CR, but last night was a miss.

Also a surprise, was the amount of LED Christmas lights strung from every single corner it could be nailed to, providing the strangest throbbing glow on all of the patrons, and the extremely underseasoned food. Our waitress was friendly, and nervous, repeating herself multiple times every time she swung by the table. The food came out extremely fast and was generally well received, but in that way, generic bar food is always a crowd-pleaser. My dad loved his burger and fries, and the table loved the cheese curds (cubes), but my Panzanella salad with shrimp was tragically underseasoned, with giant cold, limp cornbread croutons that would have been a million times better toasted, and my chili and my wife's mac & cheese were about as bland as it gets. We'd happily come back if someone asked us to meet them, and I'm sure we'd generally enjoy ourselves if we did, but I can't say it's very unlikely I'd be a regular if I lived in the area.

I knew I had to try it on a recent visit back home. My experience was mixed. The excellent: our table service was next level with each dish being thoroughly explained. We were educated on the thought process behind each wine pairing as well. Between each course our table was cleaned and we were presented with fresh silverware. The great: the food was presented beautifully and our meal looked incredibly impressive. The interior definitely invoked the Brooklyn vibes that inspired the restaurant in the first place. It feels very upscale hipster. The disappointing: though the overall experience was tasty and texturally perfect, each dish we tried had some overpowering element and flavors were not balanced. After the tuna crudo all I could taste was celery, after the morel mushroom pasta all I could taste were the pungent chive blossoms, and the trout skin/asparagus were over-grilled and I felt like I was eating a well prepared charcoal briquette. Maybe I'll give this place another try next time I'm in town and hope the flavors make as much sense as the rest of the experience.

I also wasn't a huge fan of the non-dessert food at the place that previously occupied this location. Earl's surprised me, though. I got the regular cheeseburger. The patty was cooked exactly the way I like it, and the meat blend had a surprisingly good flavor, since I would assume that a quick service place like this would probably be using frozen, pre-formed patties. If Earl's is using pre-made patties, they seem to have found some really good ones. My only minor criticism of the burger is the onions. I took them off without eating them, but they looked to be raw onion, and they were cut pretty thick. Some people might enjoy that. For me, I would prefer that they either sweat the onions, or dice them up very small. Either way though, it was a pretty good burger, considering it came from a drivethrough ice cream place. The fries were really good, too. I would say they were similar to the style of fries you get at Wendy's and Five Guys. So, they're about a quarter inch thick, lightly salted, with a little bit of skin on the ends. Obviously, there's a pretty big difference in quality between the fries at Wendy's and the fries at Five Guys. I would say Earl's fries were better than Wendy's by a good amount, and probably close to as good as Five Guys, but not quite. I don't eat fried cheese, because that's a young man's game. My wife does, though. She says there are two kinds of breading / batter that places use. Earl's apparently does not use the same type that Parlor City used. According to my wife, the Parlor City kind of breading / batter is the better kind. She liked the burger, and absolutely loved the fries, though. So, we both left happy. Overall, Earl's was really enjoyable. It was also fast, and reasonably priced. It's not exactly Michelin type food, but I'll definitely be back.
