In town for work and we stopped in for dinner. The place was not too busy but the hostess was on the phone so we waited fir a few minutes to be greeted and seated. Once sat the waiter was quick with the water and drinks. Once we ordered the service slowed down. I had the Chicken pot pie, and a side salad. Ate there tonight. Was told 20 to 30 minute wait and took 1hr and 10 minutes. Food ended up being served luke warm and no where near the quality I have come to expect from the Cheddars chain. The service was great; it hasn't been open very long, but the host and wait staff worked like a well-oiled machine to get us on the wait list, and then seated. Our waiter was excellent. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the same standards. My husband liked his French Dip, but it was pretty cold when it arrived. My son's nachos were really light on the meat and cheese and way too heavy on the refried beans. I ordered a side sampler with beans, corn, and broccoli. There are very few veggie options on the menu, and after my food arrived I realized that absolutely nothing on my plate was vegan. The broccoli was buttered, the beans contained bacon. It was also cold when it arrived. With the exception of chips and salsa there is nothing on the menu I can eat. For all the hype and talk, I thought this place would be great, and was sorely disappointed. The food was cold, ill-prepared, and there isn't anything on the menu for special diets. Yes, it goes get a little noisy with the large crowds they attract, but what's not to love about a clean and attractive facility, from scratch cooking and easy on the wallet pricing? Everything we had was good and made fresh. Recommend the homemade chicken tenders and onion rings in particular. The menu is full of down home comfort foods so don't expect crazy chef-inspired entrees. Does Darden Restaurant Group (owns Olive Garden, and a myriad of other restaurants) have to ruin everything it buys? Cheddars used to be a high 4 almost 5 star category that it fills. Good food, affordable prices, great experience. However, as of late - since Darden purchased the popular chain has really left me scratching my head. First off, if you ask for an extra napkin - you are now presented with scratchy paper towels you would find in the restroom. The queso appetizer you used to be able to order then pay $1 or so to refill it while you're waiting for your scratch made items to be prepared; no longer available. They have discontinued items that are wildly popular on the menu's and not replaced; in fact the menu has shrunk. I can appreciate that. But usually you'd shrink the menu to reduce the items needed in a kitchen; this is not the case. You will now find items on the menu have changed to be served faster; nachos; used to be individually topped - making every bite perfect. Now it's just a heaping mound of blah; thats just one example. Further more, where you once used to receive a promotion or a coupon in their emails, you now just receive boring advertisements of what they already offer with no real inspiration to want me to go back. As a place I used to frequent weekly and sometimes more than; I'm gonna have to hard pass on Cheddars. You're gonna find better out there - it's not what it used to be. read more

If the bar is busy then someone should help with to-go orders, more then twice we have called in for a to-go order and have been on hold for over 10 mins, they pick up only to put you back on hold, when do get our order in the food is Great, so the kitchen gets 4 stars. I decided that the initial rush to try a new restaurant had possibly died down, wrong. It seems that once a new restaurant opens in Cedar Rapids it remains the "happening spot" until some place new opens. Oh well, there were only two of us and the quote time was 15 minutes. So we ambled into the bar and found a spot and ordered a drink. The bartender, Austin S, was amazingly helpful. From explaining what was in the various drinks that we had seen just presented (that Headache one looked amazing) to being prompt with an offer of a refill, he was a prime example of good service. Plus, the drinks were cheap. I expected prices like Granite City or Applebee's. Nope, I had to double check my bill to make sure I wasn't trying to stiff the guy! This should have been when we left; a warm and happy feeling towards the chain called Cheddar's. Nope. After closer to 30 minutes, we got our table and the next McDonald's employee of the month, Jordan. He brought us a glass of water, took our order and gave us our bill. There ends his service. I've gotten more out of the counter help at the average Micky D's. The food was really pretty good. The ribeye was I wanted at the Lighthouse. Flavorful and cooked correctly. The broccoli was a bit mushy and cool, but good flavor. Baked potato was a potato with sour cream and butter with a sprinkle of cheese. My friend's green beans were anything but green and the mushrooms for her steak had to be asked for, since the steak came out with nary a shroom in sight. I should mention that both myself and my friend are previous servers, so we know how to wait a section. This guy walked past us multiple times and not until we were completely done did he stop to ask how the meal was or offer to refill glasses. Shame since she really wanted another bar drink. So we are done, he actually said..."Do you want some more water, oh probably not I guess. Do you want the checks split?" Dude, upsell. "Would you care to try one of our amazing cookies?" "Can I bring you an after dinner drink?" Nope. Dropped the check and then came by to pick up the credit card. Three visits after we finished and he had yet to pre-bus the empty dinner plates. We watched him walk by empty handed every time. The bus boys need to have a talk with him. I went to check out the bathroom and as new as this building is, they better get their cleaning crew on the stick because there is some nasty build-up in the corners of the stalls. Also, no paper towels in either dispenser. I guess I'm to wave my hand in front of it until it dries off? I told the male manager and he grunted at me. Perhaps among his people this means, "I'll get on that right away. Thanks." So, Austin S keep up the good work. I'll be back to the bar and I'll just eat in there. read more

Cheddar's in Cedar Rapids was outstanding last Friday night. Sheely is the best server we've EVER had anywhere!! We ordered the cookie dessert which arrived a little cold. The manager immediately came over, apologized, offered to remake it and take it off our bill. Even though it wasn't like they normally make it, it tasted great and we ate it all. Everything else was phenomenal, quick refills, great tasting food, large portions and very reasonable prices. I can't recommend it any stronger. read more

This place is fantastic. Never had one in the QC where I used to live. This is by far my favorite place to eat so far, in all of Cedar Rapids area. Great Service and at most a 20 min wait for food any time I have been there, which is well over 10 times in the last 2 months. So far I've had the Buffalo Wrap which is my favorite(I sub for Honey-Hot), Chicken Tenders, Meatloaf, and the Country Fried Chicken. If you haven't been here you're missing out. read more

We ordered our food and when it came out they told us our side dishes were out. (Macaroni and mashed potatoes) we ordered the chicken fried chicken which is supposed to come with mashed potatoes and we were angry they didn't tell us before or we wouldn't have ordered it. They asked if we wanted different sides, we ordered them. They NEVER came. We were done with our food and she asked if we still wanted them. We said no. She never refilled our drinks or waters. The Alfredo pasta was cold when I got it. So I had it sent back. I told her to reheat it and she said they will remake it. I got it back and it was luke warm. Like they put it in the microwave for 30 seconds and stirred it up and sent it back out to me. It was terrible. We asked her to take something off our bill. She "talked" to the manager and offered us chocolate cake instead. We declined and asked for a discount. We had our appetizer removed from the bill. Disappointed! Was a looking forward to dinner here but was very disappointed. We were sat in the bar area and the bartender was our server. He was busy at times but also stood around a lot and paid little attention to us. The salad and soup came out after dinner plates. The ribs, that were recommended, were dry and took an hour to chew one bite. The loaded potato was "loaded" with a few strands of cheese and a dollop of sour cream, maybe two degrees above room temperature. I could have dropped the kids burger on the ice at one of my beer league hockey games and we would have not known the difference. The place is less than a year old and already the bar is falling apart and a restroom mirror is missing. I would not recommended this to anyone. Came to Cheddars on a Sunday afternoon around 2pm. The service was great and everyone was friendly and accommodating. We had the hand dipped onion rings for an appetizer. They were very good and enough to take the edge off for 5 people. I had the salmon and I'm always afraid it will be dry but this was cooked perfectly. Others in my party had: Monte Crisco--15 year old said was the best sandwich ever; SO said the country fried steak was really good; chicken strips were average & mac and cheese was worth the calories. The food is good most of the time, but the service is slow and gets the details of the orders wrong...every single time. What side? Oh, you ordered the other version? Um, this is what was made. How long does it take to get drinks? Take an order? Check on the food? Apparently 30 minutes between each. The service is slow and uninterested in the customers. I arrived at 6 pm on a Sunday evening. As my friends who I was meeting up with had already checked in and said we had about a 5 minute wait which is not bad considering the packed restaurant. 5 minutes quickly went by before we were seated. A very polite server (who reminded me of John Malkovich with a beard) started by asking what we would like to drink. Of course I responded by asking what the drink specials were in which he added "no drink specials." I then said, "what about the margaritas?" "$4.29 is the cheapest margaritas we have, which you can't get beat at chain restaurant such as this." We responded with "three waters please." Not that I'm some sort of cheap ass but I was already three deep and figured I rather just go buy a six pack at the gas station for a dollar more. Not long before our waters arrive when we are asked if we would like any appetizers. We decide to spilt Chips and Homemade Queso. Homemade might be an exaggeration but it was a pretty decent size started for the three of us. The appetizer quickly arrives and we put in our orders. I order the Tenders and Shrimp combo with a side of fries and mac and cheese. As we wait around 20 minutes for our entrees to come, we chow down our chips, queso and salsa. Before long Charles aka Malkovich says to us, "Our chips and salsa is unlimited, would you all like another serving?" The three of us look at each other and without hesitation, "I say yeah, sure." Minutes go by and we receive our second round of unlimited supply of chips and salsa. Within a minute or two, our entrees come. The moment we've all been waiting for. As I start to dig into my main course, I find only three pieces of shrimp, which eh, my fault. I should have asked Charles for a more detail description in addition to the menu saying seven words. I finish the three shrimp poppers and start eating the chicken tenders but before long, I come to notice something on one of my chicken tenders. A lonesome hair is tangled around this crispy tender that was once known as a chicken (still have my doubts). I look around and decide that is enough of this tender. I begin bashing this tender with a fork before it becomes simply demolished. I finished up by eating the luke warm "homemade" mac and cheese. Charles checks on us and asks if we would like any boxes. A friend says yes and explains what we'll need but in mid sentence, Charles interrupts and notes that he'll figure it out. When he returns, he asks if there is anything else we need. I ask for a box for the chips and salsa. After pissing Malkovich off one last time, he brings the box. We conclude that we actually like this guy. Overall the food was absolutely bullshit, the service was alright, and the atmosphere was uncomfortable. read more

This was our first trip to Chedders. First of all our waitress Tayler made us feel so welcome! We took our time looking over the menu. Tayler was very patient with us, and she knew when we were ready to order without having to wait for her to come back. Now let me tell you, this was our 1st time in Chedders and we decided on the potato soup and a cheeseburger. The potato soup here is amazing.!! So yummy,thick with the distinct flavors of potatoes and milk. Not onions. So good!! Thank you Cheddars. Then the cheeseburger had Cheddar cheese on it, came medium with all of the goodies. Ice tea tasted fresh brewed. We had 2 glasses. So good. All in all, I think Ceddars is our new go to in Cedar Rapids. Menu that goes on forever. Quick and courteous service. Everything that has been missing in other restaurants we have been to. And,, because Tayler was nice enough to let the manager know it was our first trip to his amazing restaurant, he personally welcomed us and hoped we'd be back. The good: Food is affordable and a few of the items I have had were fairly good. The very bad: Do not attempt to go here with a party of more than 5-6.. They only have like 4 tables that aren't booths, and you cannot add a chair on a booth due to fire code.. Would have been fine waiting 30 minutes for tables to get up, but the staff didn't communicate with each other that they were going to use 2 tables together.. While one went to grab someone to help push it together another host sat one of the two tables.. 45 minutes later we decided to split our party and eat separately. I went to Cheddar's for an early dinner the other day with a friend. This was my first time visiting- my friend suggested we eat there and I had heard other people talk about Cheddar's, too. My friend ordered the chicken tender salad, I ordered the philly with a side of fries. Fries were crispy, and the philly was pretty good overall. The meat was nice and seasoned, too, and I like how they had full mushrooms mixed it (would like to see larger peppers, too). My family and I choose cheddars because my wife loves their Maui margaritas. We had a group of 7 people and discovered the restraint was busy. We were informed would be a 5-10 minute wait which was reasonable. This wait turned to not a 45 minute wait. After we were seated we were not served for another 35 minutes. People who were seated after us were served before we were, many received apologies for the delay and were comped appetizers or drinks to make up for the delay all the while we still had not been served anything we ordered.... not the appetizers, drinks or the meal. I typically do not write these reviews but I had to share this as it was the worst service I have ever experienced anywhere. We as a family enjoy going out spending time together it's the whole experience. Overall we are very understanding people, but this was horrible with not even an apology for the inconvenience. I have worked customer service jobs and the examples we seen today would be reasons I've seen people loose their jobs over. It is really a shame as we have liked cheddars in the past but honestly I have no intention of going through another experience like this with cheddars they have permanently lost our business. read more

Arrived to a packed parking lot 7/1 at about 11:45am and thought uh-oh. Inside though the hostess said the wait for 3 was 10 minutes so we stayed. Seated within the estimated time which was great! We did hear the young hostesses tell parties of 6 or more that the wait was 45 minutes. They did eventually tell the large groups that the high table seating in the bar was open seating. Our waitress, Megan, greeted us promptly and pleasantly. She kept checking back with us until our 3rd person arrived and we were able to order. Hubby had the chicken pot pie which he would def order again. His tortilla soup was to come out right away, but it didn't make it until after all our entrees had come and we'd asked for it. It came out very quickly, but wasn't hot though delicious. Daughter ordered the spasagna which we all agreed was great and enough for 2 meals. Waitress forgot to ask if she wanted meat sauce or marinara though daughter was happy with what she got. I had the Tuscan chicken sandwich with fries and I'd order it again in a heartbeat. Did have to ask for drink refills, but to be fair they were very busy. Restaurant is very cool and well done. With a few tweaks which will come with staff experience I'd rate it a five. read more
