Do NOT sleep on this place! You will regret it! Chavez Mexican Cafe is tucked away in the corner of a shopping center, which gives it that exclusive hidden-gem feel. Everything about this restaurant made me love it even more. We had a small gathering here for a retirement celebration, and from the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed and genuinely cared for. The decor beautifully celebrates Mexican culture and creates an atmosphere that feels both homey and elevated. The service was exceptional. We were lucky enough to be served by Melo, who absolutely elevated the experience. He was knowledgeable about the menu, made thoughtful recommendations without being pushy, and accommodated every request we had. What really stood out was the attention to detail, it honestly felt like Michelin-level service. From placing the salt neatly on the napkin, to turning drink handles outward when setting them down, to the way he took orders starting with the retiree, then the elders in the group, and then everyone else (even though that wasn't our seating order). It was incredibly thoughtful and intentional. Those small details did not go unnoticed. Melo was engaging, personable, and attentive the entire time. The food was delicious. The drinks took a little longer to come out from the bar, but they were absolutely worth the wait. And the salsa? Incredible. I genuinely wish I could have it at home every day. I'd put it on everything. I ordered the Skinny Avocados and was slightly nervous because avocado can make or break a dish. Too hard or too soft, and the whole meal suffers. But wow! There was absolutely nothing to worry about. The avocados were perfect. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, and while the dipping sauces were great, I barely needed them because the avocado and chicken were already so delicious on their own. I'm so glad we came here and already looking forward to our next visit. This will be my go-to Mexican restaurant going forward. read more

Came for a celebration with a few friends and had a good experience with our server being pretty knowledgeable on their menu items and bringing our food. This restaurant is bigger inside than what you would expect from the outside. Steaks were served on individual warming ovens and served with generous portions of sides of fresh tortillas and beans / rice. We were too early for happy hour but heard they have good margaritas. Been here several times over the last couple of years and have always smelled sewer gas, especially at the entrance. Regardless the food has always been good and I tolerated it however today the smell was unbearable. Brought it to the attention of management and they looked at me as if I was from Mars. What a great way to celebrate the New Year at a local Mexican restaurant in the Spring Branch area. Recommended by EM and he was right.This place knocked it out of the park. This location is way bigger in the inside than you would think with comfortable booths and very friendly servers. Their food was served hot and tortillas definitely were housemade to order. The delicious chicken fajita tacos I had were served with salsa and pico. Could not resist extra tortillas .They were that good and I think it helped we came on an early Saturday afternoon since heard this place can get busy with their all day happy hours Monday to Wednesday. I have recently been working near the restaurant and decided to give it a try. I have to say that hidden gem comes to mind if I was gonna describe this restaurant. I have been there three times now and I have to say I have been impressed and extremely surprised that this place can make food this delicious. It's hidden in a strip center and most people would over look it. They have a full bar that I must say would rival most places. I ordered the seafood and I know it's definitely a risk unless you have been recommended by someone else. But I have to say I was blown away by the taste and tried another seafood option when I went back. The restaurant has a kid friend area where they can color. WARNING: I was a long time patron of this restaurant, however I learned that it's a very felty and unsafe place. I was served beans that I never ordered, nor have I ordered before. Their waitress Gabby served me a bowl of dirty, beans which had a huge rock in my bowl and when I bit down on it, my implant broke and my bridge cracked, many of my other teeth were damaged as well. The owner's daughter ran over to me and ask for the rock and she admitted that this has happened many times before, just as her dad the owner admitted. She gave me the owner, her father's cell phone number. He assured me that he would take care of this matter, and to go ahead and get started on getting my teeth fix. After that he never called or answer my calls. In fact he later started switching the blame on the company where he buy the beans. This man is a crook and I will see him in court! read more

Driving down Gessner, HUNGRY! So I saw this place on the side of the road that looked like it had been there forever (but I have never heard of it) so I figured, what the hell, I'll give it a try and wow sure happy I did! Nothing fancy. Just a clean old fashion Tex Mex joint in a Spring Branch strip center serving some great food at reasonable prices. Chips and two types of salsas served as you sit down in a gigantic dining area with an attached bar. Fresh brewed tea and a great fish dish called Veracruz. Second time here and even better than the first time. Their queso flameado with chorizo is a must definitely one of the best ones I've had. We got one of their parrilladas and it was AMAZING. So flavorful and stays hot because of their sizzle set up. We also tried their dessert and it was good I want to definitely try their tres leches next time. Great space that can accommodate large parties and food is pretty good. A couple of times are fajitas were over cooked and lacking flavor; however, salsa and queso were great and quesadillas tasty. Bacon Jalapeno shrimp with sautéed onions were good. The issue we have is zero prices for the bar items --overwhelming menu but no drink prices and when we asked--it caused us not to drink at all! $15 house margarita and $9 beer! For 3 pm in the afternoon--those are ridiculous prices--so our bill was $100 when it could have been $200 but we were so shocked that the 3 of us all drank water. I'm going to be honest. I love this place, a few years back we used to go there a lot before they extended their place and the service was always good. We would usually take a large crowd each time and they never disappoint. After that I've been there just a few times with a large group as well and my only complaint is the service. They take a really long time for the food to arrive to our table maybe it's not the service but the kitchen, or we were too many? I don't know. We were there yesterday and even though the waiter was great he still had trouble getting our orders together and even the check. I'm sure he was busy with other tables but we weren't that many this time and besides our table there was only one more group sitting next to us. Anyway the food is great the place is clean love the vibe after the renovation so yes I would recommend for you to go. So we had to give it a shot and oh my I almost agree with them on claiming to be the best Mexican food. From the outside it looks pretty run down but inside they have the fiesta Mexican vibe going! The staff is super friendly and service is nice and quick. We got the El Rico which comes with enchilada, beef taco, and pork carnitas which was juicy and tender. The enchilada was *chef kiss* probably the most flavorful chicken enchilada I have ever had covered in tomatillo sauce it came with a kick! The tacos were exceptional and the tortilla is made in-house which you can tell by crisp and softness of it. Great customer service! The wait staff was always checking on our water glasses. My veggie enchiladas were delicious and unique. Unlike other places that put mushrooms and peppers on veggie enchiladas, Chavez puts carrots and cauliflower. The plate is big and served with white rice. It's one of their lighter options and served with a choice of tomatillo or another type of sauce. My parents seemed to enjoy their fish and taco dishes. Looking for a new lunch spot and craving Mexican food. Found Chavez on Yelp and glad I did! Authentic Mexican food, friendly service, an extensive menu and a spacious restaurant. Red salsa (served warm) and green salsa were fresh and tasty. I had the Mexico Enchiladas, the entire dish was well seasoned, and the mole sauce was maybe the best I've had in Houston. The only downside was the temperature of the enchiladas, they could have been a bit warmer -- but that won't keep me away. The entire meal was absolutely delicious.
