This bi-level French supper club in Greenwich Village is giving Golden Age of French dining... with a little 80s downtown swagger. Upstairs? White-tablecloth, legendary French energy. Downstairs? French disco, martinis, and main-character behavior. Started strong with a Chateau Vodka Martini Dirty and a Negroni (Gin, Yellow Rouge, Vermouth Rouge, Chinotto). Both hit like grown-man decisions. Smooth, bold, no nonsense. First round: oysters. Perfect balance of briny and sweet -- tasted like the Atlantic put on cologne. Then the Pommes Frites. Hearty, plentiful, crispy like they trained for this moment. The aioli? I would write it into my will. Royal Red Shrimp & Espelette with more of that elite aioli -- ridiculous. Tender, flavorful, borderline disrespectful to other shrimp. And then... Ossetra Caviar Service. Thick-cut, kettle-cooked homemade potato chips topped with caviar. Simple. Clean. Boss-level appetizer. Service? Incredible. Attentive without hovering. They treat you like you own stock in the place. Chateau Royale isn't dinner. It's an entrance. It's a vibe. A super random choice for a brunch venue especially due to the location ( I live in the uws ) but I love restaurants in this neighborhood and more so because it's french . I also read they have amazing martinis and boy do they ? I absolutely love love ( me encanta as they say in spanish ) the space, ambiance , food , martinis / wine selection . I went for brunch with my bff and we shared everything in the menu ( dishes with caviar washed down by the martinis). I'm definitely coming back for dinner so I can explore the options and so I can have not just one but multiple cocktails . The place was quiet for some reason but didn't need a packed place to feel the vibe of the restaurant. The servers worked well together and were attentive to us ( maybe because It wasn't super busy ). Nonetheless , highly recommended . Decided to do a rather impromptu brunch and snagged a table and were WOWed! The service is super lovely. They are attentive without being overbearing. Completely taken care of beautifully. Plus they didn't make us rush at all. In fact, they let us stay and linger with our wine while they swapped from brunch to dinner service and didn't make a thing of it while a good friend and I wanted a leisurely afternoon. The wagyu steak frites IS LEGIT. What a great cut and quality and under $50... are you for real?! We also had the tasty foie gras too. And my friend did the lobster croque madam and raved. Soooo good. We loved everything we tried here, starting with the martini cart of course. One of the best martinis I ever had. If you love butter, this is your spot. All of the sauces are so decadent and buttery, it was my dream. There were four of us so we were able to try most of the the menu. We had the blue prawns, scallops, artichoke, escargots, sable, filet au poivre, and duck. All hits, no misses. We even ordered a second filet. This is a great spot for a date, dinner with parents or a night out with friends. Tables in the dining room are spacious and not on top of each other which is a rarity in this city. Patrons started trickling in around 6:30 and by 7pm it was filling up and we were told we had 15 minutes before having to turn our tables over. We just ordered dessert. We did indicate that we were celebrating our wedding anniversary and it would have been nice not to be rushed. Food wise: escargot was amazing, foisgras was delicious and so were the frites. The hot dog was a bit flat imo, but was highly recommended by the server. For red desert, we order a crème brûlée and it was way too sweet for french desserts. read more

This place has some truly amazing food, and might be the greatest brunch secret in the village. At brunch the vibes are maybe not what they are at dinner, but the service is still good, if perhaps a little more absent than expected, but fun and really helpful. They should have the martini cart at brunch, or maybe turn it into an espresso martini cart because their espresso martini is fire! Lobster Croque was one of my favorite dishes with just amazing flavor abounding. The endive salad with anchovies was so flavorful and tasty, and the steak frites was so good. The frites might be some of my favorites in Manhattan. I think they're done in duck fat - and the sauces are just stellar. Le Club was good, but not great, and the duck benedict could have been juicier. You must get the pancake souffle if you come for brunch. It is just so good and can't be easy to make at home. Drink to your heart's content because each drink here is really quite good. We'll be back for dinner. read more

I am not a huge fan of Libertine so I was not particularly hopeful heading to Chateau Royale, but it is fabulous. The remodel is beautiful, the service is gracious and friendly and it is a genuinely fun atmosphere. The cocktails (and wine list) are terrific. The food is delicious. Chateau Royale is an old NY-style French restaurant that's located in a former townhouse! The restaurant is set up as a bi-level supper club with a cocktail bar - their bar room is intimate and cozy, with dim lights and the dark wood. Try to obtain a reservation for either their bar or their dinner room! We started off with the Oysters & Normandy Cidre Mignonette and the Royal Red Shrimp & Espelette Aioli - both that were super fresh. For our entrees, we tried the Sable au Caviar Beurre Blanc, the Duck à l'orange, and the Filet au Poivre. We also had sides of the pommes frites and the koshihikari pilaf. Everything was beautifully presented with generous amounts of food - our party was able to share the apps and the entrees with no issue. If you're into martinis, check out their martini cart service! Staff were friendly and attentive, and service was on point. I'd like to try their steak frites on the next visit, which is offered on their bar dinner menu. Chateau Royale may be one of the most elegant and beautiful restaurants I've been to this year. It's located in a two floor townhouse. There's the main dining room upstairs and the bar room downstairs, both beautiful in their own right, with the former being open and airy while the latter, more moody. They have two different menus but there are overlapping dishes. I came on opening night Tuesday, and dined in the main dining room. What an experience! The servers were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I particularly liked the bartender who was in charge of the cocktail cart. I had two Chateau Martinis [$23 each], they were ICE COLD and absolutely delicious. They also packed a punch, so make sure you have a substantial meal. The food is really outstanding, my favorites include the foie gras [$25], the chicken cordon bleu [$39], and the desserts [$15]: the chocolate cake and the lemon tart. The foie is creamy and delicious, I especially enjoyed the buttery toast points they are served with. The chicken cordon bleu reminds me of my childhood and the terrible version my mother tried to make [nostalgia!], except here it is outstanding. The breading on the outside is super crispy, while the chicken, ham, and gruyere cheese are especially moist. Just look how the cheese oozes out when you cut into it. The desserts are a wonderful finisher. The chocolate cake is ooey gooey while the lemon tart is just right. They are average in size so you could definitely get more than one dessert to share. An honorable mention should go to the complimentary bread and butter and the buttery piece of brioche/croissant that accompanies the escargot [$24], it's incredible for dipping into the garlic oil butter leftover from the dish. I truly can't wait to come back and try the downstairs menu, especially the burger and fries. $215 after tax and tip. This place can get spendy. read more

If you enjoy people-watching, this place has its merits: the gaggle of influencers with repulsive table manners was, admittedly, quite entertaining. The food itself was good. Everything else was a disaster. We started with a martini, about as classic and foolproof a cocktail as exists, and somehow it arrived with zero refinement: stringent, like a cleaning product. Then came the wrong order... to their credit, the correct entree was brought out quite quickly. However, the prompt fix doesn't excuse a level of service this sloppy. I've had more attentive waitstaff at a McDonald's. I tried to order a glass of wine to go with the entree and could not locate the single server on the floor. To make up for the wrong order and abysmal service, they comped us a digestif, which I can only describe as a syrupy, cloying glass of raisin juice. I'd have happily traded it for them simply removing the $6 bread and butter from our bill. The food might be worth the trip, but the experience in its entirety was a massive disappointment. read more

Highly recommend The martini was really good. Food wise - the escargot might actually be my fav in the city. The sauce was very addictive. I also personally really enjoyed the Hokkaido scallops dish. The food here was actually quite good, but I knocked off a couple of stars for the weird standoffish exchange that happened at the door. We stopped by for an early dinner on Sunday night. Mind you, this was maybe 6pm. My husband accidentally made a reservation for the bar lounge downstairs, but he wanted to sit in the dining room upstairs. So we asked if they could make a switch. They were just like, well we just opened and we are REALLY POPULAR, so no sorry. Lol. Sweet sir, we eat out 3-4 times a week. Your downstairs lounge is completely empty. It's the early birds slot on a Sunday night. We got this reservation an hour ago. Every restaurant saves a number of tables for regulars and there are always cancellations. How is it possible you could not find us one single table? We asked twice. It was just extremely off putting. Maybe we just get bad service from clueless maitre d' because we look very young (despite being in our mid and late 30s) and these folks think we are broke and just trying to steal the free bread or something. OK so fine, we were famished and shall sit in an empty lounge for dinner. Onto the food, actually liked a few dishes: - Red shrimp - very good. So much so we ordered 2x! They came out semi raw, which shocked the elderly couple that came and sat at the table next to us. They didn't like that. But we did. The shrimps were very flavorful and delicious - Foie gras - very good. I ate there last weekend. Great ambiance, great servers, many of whom are actually French. Beautiful menu. However, the food was totally unimpressive, especially for the price. I was shocked. I go to a lot of French restaurants and this one was all pretention, no depth. Manhattan has many excellent French restaurants. This is NOT one of them. Clientele seemed to be mainly out of town parents of NYU students, and various tourists from other places. The only charming part was the little cart used to serve cocktails; however, the house cocktails used grade B brand alcohol, which is sort of the story of the restaurant. read more

The sublime Sable au Caviar Beurre Blanc was a shining light in an otherwise dim meal. It was so good that we suspected it was either a kitchen misfire, or was DoorDashed downtown from, say, Daniel. But sadly, it didn't offset the other nauseating dishes delivered by our charming server: an inedible over-salted foie gras au torchon; a vegetal and washed-out Peekytoe Crab Mille-Feuille; a gummy and underbaked Bay Scallop & Sea Urchin Vol-au-Vent; and a criminal Baked Alaska redolent of mowed suburban lawn and draped in a grey goo possibly synthesized a special effects lab. The simple millennials filling the dining room, glued to their phones and anesthetized by multiple martinis, seemed oblivious to how truly bad this restaurant is. One longs for a Montrachet, Caravelle, Lutèce, or Le Cirque, the DNA of which Chateau Royale aspires but so dismally fails to share. read more

Chateau Royale is a new york gem that gets everything right. Excellent food, ambiance, and staff. Chateau Royale is one of those rare places that manages to feel both vibey and approachable. It's perfect for a romantic date or a lively group dinner. The menu is full of beautifully executed dishes meant to be shared, each one more tempting than the last. Some of my personal favorites: the duck, filet au poivre, Dover sole, and lobster thermidor. All absolute standouts. And whatever you do, don't skip the fries; they're perfection. The beggar's purse is a must-try as well , a delicate little crepe filled with caviar and crème fraîche. It's a tiny bite of heaven, so good that our table ordered multiple rounds. The martinis are a show in themselves, mixed tableside by a charming gentleman with a martini tattoo under his eye, a small detail that perfectly matches the playful yet polished energy of the place. The owner Cody brings an extra layer of hospitality to the experience, spending time on the floor chatting with guests and personally pouring wine. That personal touch gives Chateau Royale a uniquely intimate, old school New York feel that's hard to find these days. His knowledge of wine and passion for food is undeniable. I haven't tackled the downstairs bar menu fully yet, but the duck club is calling my name! If it's anything like the rest of the menu, it's going to be unforgettable. read more

Everything was great! We had a reservation for 7;45 and checked in with the host where we were able to check our coats and were quickly seated in the upstairs dining room. The dining room was fairly empty but later into dining all of the tables had completely filled up. We opted for a glass of wine and the table side martini which was entertaining to watch the pour, and very tasty. The service was fantastic - friendly, and attentive. They brought complementary bread to start, which wins me over (my only wish is that it was warmed). We chose the escargot appetizer which was accompanied with a croissant like pastry that was excellent. For our mains we both chose the chicken cordon bleu (irresistible!) and split a side of fries. By this point we were very full and opted for a liquid dessert of espresso martinis. The espresso is fresh and you could definitely tell when sipping! In between courses the servers properly reset the table (place settings, picking up crumbs, etc), and noticed tables were quickly turned over. Overall, Chateau Royale is a great choice for a nice dinner out. read more

Overall just meh. It's not bad but not great. the food leaned very salty. The escargot were good but the accompanied laminated brioche roll type thing that came with it seemed almost stale. The baguette was not crusty at all as one would expect, and the seaweed butter you could hardly tell it was in there. Warmed baguette would have been nice. The artichoke was fine but the bearnaise it came with was very mediocre. I would expect a better bearnaise from a French place. The foie torchon was good but definitely on the saltier side which was ok for this because the toast they gave balanced it out, prob the favorite app of the night. The burger was pretty decent but asked for it medium rare and it came out medium/medium well, but ate it anyway. The hot dog was actually solid but pricey. For desserts got crème bruelee which was very good and a cassis sorbet with white wine which I would say was bad. It was extremely icey for sorbet and honestly would have made for a better drink if I had let it melt into the sparkling wine that was poured over it. We came here for our anniversary and it was an absolutely outstanding experience! The vibe upstairs is perfect. Red booths and sexy French music. We started with the martini cart and I'll say it was the best martini I have ever had. Our waitress and the sommelier were attentive, friendly and charming. The food was everything we were looking for. We started with the scallops and the oysters. The scallops were rich and creamy with fried capers and yuzu and the oysters were the perfect blend of briny and sweet. We had the endive salad in a cheesy dressing that balanced the bitterness of the endive. The foi gras with a cherry sauce was rich and creamy. Finally we had the lobster thermador as our main. I was skeptical of the heavy cheese sauce on lobster but it just worked. The portion was perfect and not too heavy. We finished with the chocolate soufflé that was heaven.
