They boyfriend and I spent the night in Bath as I was trekking from OH to RI for a summer internship. We were looking for a place to grab a decent brunch since the hotel's continental breakfast was abysmal. We found Chat-a-Whyle through a web search and asked one of the hotel employees about it. She said it was decent for breakfast, so away we went. A nice feature is an all-you-can-eat breakfast bar for about $7. This is what my boyfriend chose as it had an array of eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy, fruit, and pastries. Not seeing anything remotely healthy on the breakfast bar, I opted for an egg beaters omelet with peppers, onions, tomatoes, and salsa. I asked that it be cooked without butter or oil and they were more than happy to oblige. Both the BF and I were quite impressed with our meals. He over stuffed himself on fattening goodies and I found my omelet to be just a tad too big. All of the food was fresh and delicious. Yelp should allow half stars for ratings, I feel 2 is too low but 3 is too high for a mediocre rating. So 2.5 to even it out. Anyhow, disappointed. I love diners and I know everyone cooks differently but still. French toast, I've never come across a place who does NOT use cinnamon! So I ended up with an eggy tasting bread. Asked for cinnamon and got a cinn/sugar mix which was "ok" I suppose. Still didn't mask the eggie taste. 14 yr old Daughter got the same and she wasn't pleased either. Sausage was good at least. Husband got the scrambler. Very very dry!!!! Eggs and hashbrowns, just very dry. 7 year old got an omelette. Now call me stupid, but an omelette is suppose to have "something" IN it to START with, otherwise it's just a scrambled egg cooked flat. So $1-2 for 1 actual scrambled egg, or 3.29 for a plain egg omelette then ADD $1 for cheese?! Wth?! um...ok.?! This is an establishment serving up fresh, homemade breakfasts, lunches and dinners. I ate breakfast and dinner there and everything was freshly prepared, served with a smile and delicious. It is a simple place, seemingly stuck in time, reminding me of a Mayberry type of atmosphere. The prices are excellent, compared to what you get. Don't miss the homemade sticky buns. Having lived in bath, ny as a wee-lil towhead on a purple banana bike circa late 70s,I have only since returned and visited this restaurant for the very first time. Classic hometown restaurant on small main street. Quality food and service with moderate prices. Clean restaurant, lots of window, very comfortable room in back and also a few talbes in the front room, and of course counter service. Quck service if needed, or I must admit my childhood friend and I whyle'd away 2 hours over breakfast catching up and never felt hurried or that we were a burden. Good ole-home manners brought through the service and attidude. As Bath is the county seat, and this is just a few blocks from the county buildings including the courthouse there is always a nice bustle in the place, but never an impetuous que for a table. If hoping to keep a low profile and not see anyone in town you may know then DO NOT GO HERE.. otherwise for what it purports to be, it's great. read more

Very much a 50s environment, along wth 50s friendliness and manners. This is a small town expanded diner. The menu is all-American fare...not much that jumps off the page. I ordered the pork roast with mashed potatoes and dressing. It came out on the dish looking like a small mountain smothered in this very brown, thick gravy....gives new meaning to the term "rib-sticken." Homemade dinner rolls were dry and stale. May appeal to the "early bird special" crowd. Amusing, quirky waiter....but not much else going on here. read more

Like others said before, this is a standerd diner with good food in my opinion. I had a burger and it was good, but not the best, but what do you expect from a diner? My dad had a sandwich which he say was ok. This would have been a 3 star if not for the excellent service. They were fast and nice and i enjoyed the experience a lot. Very disappointing....There were 4 of us. Two of which had the cold/warm salad bar. Many of the salad bar items were almost gone (5:30 p.m.), the warm dish was tuna noodle casserole, which was mushy and tasteless. The other two ordered off the menu, their food took forever to be served (way after ours) and both had items that were not at all like they had ordered. I "thought" this was a great place to eat. Great food, real authentic atmosphere in a small town. I had the chicken fried steak, which was done perfectly. The gravy was just what it was supposed to be, the salad and dinner roll right on the mark. I arrived at 7 pm, only a few people there but more came in. The place was clean, the staff was very friendly, and Christmas music played softly in the background. A real slice of Americana. I recommend you check it out if you are in the area! read more

45 minutes to get a cold breakfast from a rude waitress who hurried us and then ignored us....her "big" tables got plenty of attention....can't get a decent HOT breakfast and be appreciated for bringing my business there .. While the service was okay, my mother and myself went to this restaurant and ordered 2 servings of chicken wing lasagna which took almost 30 minutes to get to the table, after tasting the horrific mass of noodles and cheese we both decided that it didn't taste good, we sent it back, with an order for a piece of pie and a grilled cheese sandwich, the pie was delivered in minutes, almost 30 more minutes and the sandwich appeared, burnt. When I requested a bill I was told that the waitress would have to pay for the uneaten meals, finding that unacceptable I requested the owner, who threatened to call the police when I initially refused to pay for the uneaten food, telling me that there was "nothing wrong with it". I've been to the chatawhyle many times in the last 30 years, and I've never had this happen before. read more

Stopped in for breakfast. Very nice waitstaff. Cozy small-town place (in a good way!). Absolutely AMAZING sticky buns! I won't say how many I ate, but if I'm ever in the area I'll be stopping by for more. The rest of my meal was eggs (perfectly over easy), bacon (cooked just right) and white toast. First time visit. Nice atmosphere. Clean comfortable. Greeted immediately. Seated quickly given menus. Waited 15 minutes to b greeted by waiter. Was not his fault. Was hostess fault. She was too busy flitting and chatting up a storm with table of 6 She was quiet familiar with. Packaging up their leftovers and jus oblivious to what was going on in dining area. She never told the waiter she seated not 1 of his tables but 2 of his tables. Jamie, our waiter was very sweet. Made apologies as best as he could. He was very attentive after he caught up. Hostess wasn't even paying attention to where she was seating people in whose section. Food was so so... Skimpy skimpy salad...not even few chips or pickles with sandwiches...hot roast beef and Philly cheese steak. Both sandwiches were hot and good. But not sure if will venture back. We tried this place while traveling and experienced below average diner food. I'm not a snob about diners - I like diners - but I routinely find better food, selections and service. For those trying to eat healthy, go elsewhere. The vegetable selection is almost nonexistent, and breaded and fried is the only option for fish. Chat-A-Whyle is a nice, down-home restaurant in town that offers a close approximation of a New Jersey diner. The menu is somewhat limited, but the prices are low as well. I do not recommend this restaurant. Dirty, slow service, food over cooked and undercooked. Kids had pancakes, couldn't cut through them, even with a butter knife, daughter ordered sliced bananas and they brought out a whole banana still in skin unopened, I had to ask for a new coffee cup because mine still had coffee stains on it and was sticky to the touch, she brought me yet another dirty cup with coffee stains on it, apparently they have two different potatoes and do not clarify that when taking the order, corned beef hash tastes like it's out of a can and undercooked. The tables were not clean, food and used napkins still on them even after seating new customers, and spraying to clean them after they already sat down. Also, a table that arrived 20min after us got their food first. We waited 40min for breakfast food. read more

Wait staff was very helpful and friendly... came for breakfast... Had two eggs over medium home fries and ham with coffee... It was the canned potatoes used for the home fries that killed it for me ...there was absolutely no seasoning on them whatsoever... yuk... otherwise breakfast was good. read more

Wow!!!! Must be a management change! Never really had a bad experience previously, took at least 10 minutes to be acknowledged by a waiter, and we had acknowledge them, then we wait....at least an hour...FOR BREAKFAST!!! Some scrambled eggs an sausage..I mean cmon!! Then I get my food, NASTYYYY, sausage was burn, my toast had a whole tub of butter on it, and it was all cold! We also had to find our own ketchup and syrup so we could eat. Then to top it all off I find a hair in my eggs and in my sons pancake . That put me over the top, after waiting that long for my food I didn't even eat it, I looked around for a manager but nobody even seemed to be running the joint. So to wrap it up, unless something drastic changed (and I'll never know) I would avoid at all cost!! read more

If you are looking for a yummy breakfast place in Bath...this is where you should go...without a doubt. I had great french toast and my guy had a fabulous omelet and side of bacon. I am sure there are many other good choices on the menu...and the coffee was fabulous. I really appreciated the service we received from the waitress...though initially concerned that their Halloween costumes of farm girls with freckles was their actual uniform. :-) Don't hesitate to try this place out!! read more

As a Bath resident, I can't believe that Chat-A-Whyle's signature item hasn't yet been highlighted in a review! Maybe most locals are trying to keep their best secret, but I love 'em so much I take every visitor we have to get one. STICKY-BUNS. Tell anyone in Bath you are going to get sticky buns and they know exactly where you are going. Fingers and napkins are a MUST for fully enjoying their pull-apart goodness. When that fresh sticky bun arrives, the sweet aroma fills the table. Breathe the steam in deep before slowly separating the doughy pieces with your fingers, tearing off a small piece to pop in and savor the gooey sweetness melting in your mouth. At this point, many continue eating it as is, others prefer to spread some butter on top and let it melt into the crevices. I prefer my sticky-buns in their pure state, but they tastes fantastic either way. :-) Of course, Chat-A-Whyle sticky-buns are best when freshly baked & eaten immediately, but we often order a dozen takeout for two people and have leftovers; many a breakfast has been made in my house on day-old sticky-buns. Just add coffee and they become great for dunking. :-) Best part is - they serve sticky buns ALL DAY! No need to make it in time for Breakfast. read more

Good thing the dining room is nice because if you go there, you'll be spending A LOT of time in it. The food is decent but service is terrible. I work within walking distance and everyone knows not to try to have lunch here. There just isn't enough waitstaff to attend to the large dining room. We were told to seat ourselves, and after a 10 minute wait wondered if we were supposed to serve ourselves as well. If you want water, you'll have to ask for it and even then don't expect to get it until your food arrives. Predictably, when the food did come it was no longer hot. Asking for the check will only prolong your agony. Pretty sure our waitress took a smoke break between clearing our plates and bringing us our check. Nice place, if you have the time. read more

We normally eat at this restaurant a few times a year; especially in the summertime while motorcycle riding. This past Sunday we stopped for the breakfast buffet and was truly disappointed. The food was cold, they seemed to have cooked too much to soon. The eggs were more like cardboard, the (i guess it was) sausage gravy was way to thick, and the hash browns were under cooked. The sticky buns were cold and hard. I have had better at this restaurant. The server was very polite and upbeat. Recommendation is to not cook so much food at one time, even though it will mean refilling the pans more often. read more
