Some quiet town in NY, lunch stop on way from Niagara Falls to Philly. And guys, it's really good! I don't give out 5 stars often. And when I have it's usually an expensive restaurant. We had 11 people. Service was friendly and quick. Most of us ordered something different, a few ordered the beef sandwich. Everything was really really good! Prices were honestly fair for the portions. We all left with food for dinner. We missed out on the sticky buns though since they ran out! Sooo sad about that! It is definitely dated and dingy in the very small town of Bath. We stopped honestly because we needed to stop on our way to Pennsylvania for dinner and it was the only thing not fast food for a while. Service was great and food was above satisfactory. My food needed to be salted badly but that's a whole lot better than oversalting. Highlight of the meal was sticky bun martini. One of the best martinis ever! It was so good we bought six of the sticky buns to take home. Worth stopping in if in the area. read more

Clean restaurant with very friendly service. We went for breakfast. The potatoes were better than anticipated. The eggs were the smallest eggs I've ever seen in my life. When we first looked at the menu and saw that the egg sandwich was two eggs we thought that's a huge egg sandwich. We did not order it, but we did order sunny side up eggs, and scrambled eggs. When we saw the size of the eggs we said a sandwich would probably require three eggs at that size. We also tried the pancakes, which were very thick and fluffy. I did not care for them as they didn't have much flavor and I prefer a thinner pancake. read more

This place was so wonderful! They decorated it so nice for Christmas. We visited this restaurant today at 2pm for lunch. There were several tables filled up it wasn't that busy. They had a nice Christmas tree, and lots of people were dressed up in Christmas themed clothes. We got the hot honey chicken sandwich with green beans, and the Philly cheesesteak with onion rings. The server was really nice, and our food came really quickly. Everything was amazing. The onion rings were the perfectly crispy I think they used a thin beer batter. The hot honey chicken with soaked in honey. I think it would have been better if they used a crispy chicken to soak up the honey. The honey was no spicy at all. It came with a tomato, and onion rings in the burger. The green beans were the perfect texture and tasted very fresh. This place was so magical. Would totally come again! read more

A friend who lives in town, and I decided to go for dinner. When I walked in, I was not impressed. The food was subpar, but what was really disturbing was just how dingy the place was. That's only part of the issue. A family of three that had a Service dog entered. This guy started harassing them, even though it was very clear that this dog was a service dog. They actually threw them out. My friend, who lives there, and I both swore neither of us would set foot in that place again. What a dump. read more

I would absolutely 100 and 10 percent not recommend chat a while restaurant in Bath. I took a one bite of steak which I'm not allergic to spit it out and by the time I got it out of my mouth I was already starting to have a reaction. It tasted rotten and a customer dining next to us between later found out was the owner kept insisting it was fine and that we just didn't want to pay which damn right I don't want to pay $81 for a steak that's making me so I can't breathe. He was highly rude and would offer no resolution to the issue and kept saying he would eat that steak which when your 500lb of course you would. read more

Although the food was great especially loved the smashed potatoes and our waitress Monica was charming and very helpful I alas can't give a good rating due to the owner's service dog policies. The owner insists the waitress needs documentation that a dog is an actual service dog. (That's easily purchased online no training needed) by law businesses can only ask two questions is a service dog for a disability and what task does it perform. They are NOT allowed to ask for documentation of a disability or certification of the dog. They are however allowed to ask a service animal be removed if it is not house trained or acts aggressively and is not immediately corrected. I will agree that too many people take advantage of this however fake service animals affect those of us with true service animals also. If the owner implements these rules they or their manager should speak to a handler not put the poor wait staff in the middle. Monica you're the best. I would have given 5 stars until the service dog came into play. read more

We stopped here late, because we detoured off the interstate to charge our car at the EV chargers located right behind the restaurant. The restaurant was only open for 25 more minutes, but they were so gracious when we entered and didn't seem put out at all. If it had been earlier we would've tried one of the many local wines on their wine list, but we settled for water. We ordered fried mozzarella while perusing the menu and it came out lickity split, piping hot and oozing with cheese. For our main entrees I ordered the vegetable risotto with grilled shrimp and my husband had the pot roast. The risotto was really good, but the pot roast? To die for. It was a huge piece, tender and juicy, served over mashed potatoes and a wine reduction au jus that the beef had simmered in. You'd think we'd be stuffed and we were, but we needed to try one of their homemade desserts. We shared a piece of delicious homemade lemon cheesecake filled with jumbo blueberries. Two things really impressed us besides the friendliness of our server, all of the dishes are made to order and they do everything they can to source their ingredients locally. I spoke to Dylan, the owner, after our meal and he told me even the maple syrup served on their breakfast pancakes is from a local grower who they are friends with. We really enjoyed our meal and this summer when we have more time, I think we might drive down again, explore Bath and treat ourselves to a very nice dinner at the Chat-a-Whyle, this time with wine. read more

Went in with my family and my service dog and was screamed at by a staff member who seemed like he hadn't showered in days saying "that's not a service dog! TRUMP 2026!" and we were kicked out and refused service. We contacted the local PD and were informed that they have received several other complaints about the restaurant. I know this sounds like a karen review but seriously service dogs are important and they have nothing to do with politics. read more

What a fantastic little spot for lunch! We met my parents here and were pleasantly surprised by this eatery on the Main Street in Bath. The server was prompt and knowledgeable. We began with a coupe tasty apps, followed by a filling Santa Fe Salad and Rachel sandwich. The Peach Bourbon Cheesecake for dessert was a perfect finisher. Went for New Years Eve dinner. They had a special dinner for $75 and bottomless champagne. We got there at 8 and took awhile to get sat. We got one glass of champagne and then our server said they were out of champagne and we ask for a cocktail or wine because they were out of champagne and we were told no. Then the owner came over and was kinda snippy and never apologized. Being local and in the industry we will never come back or send people. We understand things run out but there was never compensation. Paid $200 two people and it was absolutely not worth it. read more

I went to this place for dinner and heard a number of staff members yelling at a family about their service dog and refusing entry. After recovering from the stench I noticed the family that was being refused. The dog was exceptionally well behave and was wearing a vest clearly stating she is a trained service dog. It was very upsetting to hear the owners abuse of this family, especially their disabled child. The stench of something rancid was our first clue but their horrible attack sealed the deal. I ordered food with no dairy. I was served and ate dairy. When I approached the owner and politely told him the situation he took a defensive tone told me that my order had not come back that way followed by, "it's just butter, it won't hurt you!" I asked that it be removed from my bill, and it wasn't. I received no apology or even a hint of remorse from the owner or the waitress who had made the error. I was sick for 12 hours. I later learned the owner is a formally trained chef. They receive education on allergies in culinary school. To have him flippantly dismiss me would not be ok no matter what, but he fully understands how the situation should have been handled but decided to be rude to a first, and last time customer. At no time was I rude, defensive or hostile. I was polite and approached him privately. I have a lactose intolerance. I also have a friend who is violently allergic to whey and casein, and, yes, dairy can very much hurt a person. He was once exposed to parts per million and broke out in a full body rash. Had he eaten the full bite I had, he would have been in the hospital. This flippant attitude to allergies is going to get this place sued. This happened quite awhile ago and I considered no posting, but after watching my friend get so ill from parts per million, it seemed important to circle back and warn diners. read more

I would not spend a dime in this place. You'd think for the price of his menu items he could afford some manners, respect, integrity, professionalism, compassion and so on.....treats his staff like shit and allows his staff to treat staff like shit. Also holds their paychecks from them when they no longer work for him, which is illegal. When he can no longer find staff to treat this way I hope he can run this business by himself! Let's see it succeed then. I have not worked for him but know many people who have and not one of them has anything good to say about how they are treated. After listening to the waitress talk about being short staff issues and the previous owner that wasn't the Aunt and uncle, we got to order. Food came out quickly. Looked really tasty until I noticed that the tenders for the wrap was raw in the center. Looked up to see where the server was and she was at the counter with the owner and another waitress talking about us. I took my plate up and asked if they could just cancel my order. No problem there. So I went back to enjoy the lunch my spouse had. The server came over and offered me a dessert. I politely passed and asked for the bill and a togo box. This server must have felt personally offended because she started making some crappy comments. We got up and all of the owner with a chefs coat and short shorts came over but instead of asking me what the problem was. He began to tell me how hard they work serving assholes like me. He even tried blocking us from leaving. Followed us outside talking all shorts of nonsense. First advice in business is to remove emotions and try to listen to others. I grew up in Bath eating here. I was doing my fall coast to coast ride and came to Bath to lay flowers at my parents gravesite. Before leaving I wanted to eat at the chat a whyle in memory of the many meals we shared there as a family. I ordered a sandwich and less than a minute later I realized it was on rye, which I do not like. I immediately told the waitress who went to the kitchen and returned saying the bread was already started so it could not be changed. I accepted that and told the waitress to serve it without bread. It came out as a sandwich on rye and I ate the filling and discarded the bread. As I left I made contact with the waitress away from any customers and calmly told her that the bread issue was not her fault so it would no affect her tip, which for me is a customary minimum $5.00, but to let whoever made the decision over 20 cents in bread I would be making a negative yelp review. A male, I assume was the cook based on his work jacket, came from the back and told me he had to make it as ordered because the bread was already started. I told him calmly that I hoped the 20 cents in bread was worth a negative yelp review. At this point a simple apology would have sufficed but as I turned and walked out the door he shouted " go be an a**hole somewhere else". This was apparently his last attempt to make the customer happy. I just walked away with zero response or further interaction. I was pretty clear that because I was a traveler he did not care to make me happy. I have travelled hundreds of thousands of miles and eaten in thousands of restaurants. This is the only yelp review I have ever submitted. If you are passing through I would keep going because it is clear the management could not care less about providing a nice dining experience if you are just passing through. To be fair the sandwich filling and fries were pretty good. So close to being happy. read more

Cute place that we were very hopeful would be a meal to remember. Checked out prices posted on yelp first. Unfortunately it was just an average ok meal with exorbitant prices. Price point was about $5 more than it should have been for each meal. Way overpriced with up charges for all changes for already overpriced. If you took a look around the dining room was nearly empty. We spent $54 for two small sandwiches and two canned drinks. The family beside us spent $105 plus tip for two kids and two adults. Stopped here following a burial service at Bath National Cemetery; it was only a 5 minute drive away. Originally, my brother had called to make a reservation for 10 people at 4pm. Well when we arrived at 3:50pm, our party had nearly tripled. It only took the wait staff ~5 minutes to arrange the tables and accommodate the big crowd. With such a large party, 2 waitresses took our orders. The food came out in waves, which was expected with nearly 30 orders. I'm glad they didn't try to get out all the food out at once, as it would have resulted in the dishes having to sit. Overall, everyone seemed happy with their choices, as there was a wide variety available - pancakes, wings, club sandwiches, pork chops, etc.. The poor cooks were stuck making just about every dish available. I split the Salty Dog sandwich (a Reuben with turkey and bacon instead of corned beef) and turkey cranberry wrap. For sides we chose French fries and sweet fries. I loved that the fries had a crispy coating and the sweet fries were crinkle cut which was even better. There was honey to dip the sweet fries in. Personally, I feel straight-up honey is a bit too sweet; honey-butter is more my style. Overall the sandwich and wrap were solid choices - perfect amount of fillings. (Sometimes there is just too much meat and vegetables that it makes a sandwich/wrap difficult to eat). The Salty Dog, was true to it's name - salty with a touch of sourness from the marbled rye bread. I loved the cranberry infused cheese in the wrap - the fact that it was a spread, ensured it's flavor was in each bite. Lastly, the menu was decently priced. For just under 30 people, the bill came to $350. Would I stop here again? Yes, because it's the nostalgia of the place. My Dad loved his "greasy spoons" and this spot is right on par with what he looked for in a diner - friendly wait staff, classic comfort dishes, and inexpensive menu options. I'm giving 5 stars, because Chat-A-Whyle fulfilled it's job as a causal roadside restaurant. And well, it may not have been anywhere near the best food I have eaten, the atmosphere and dishes left us all with feelings of comforting goodness. read more

We had lunch at Chat-A-Whyle back in March 2019. We met my uncle, who lives in the area, there on our way home from vacation and had a good meal. We spent this past week in Hammondsport and couldn't decide where to have dinner our last night in town. We're so glad we decided to drive over to Bath! Chat-A-Whyle has been completely redone inside and looks so nice! Our server was great! She was friendly and funny!! We started with the best fried zucchini we've had! Nice and crispy. My husband had the French Onion Pork Chop, which he can't stop talking about, with mashed potatoes and a house salad. We live 700 miles away, so I'm thinking we're going to need to recreate the pork chop recipe soon at home! My daughter had the Mac & Cheese with a Caesar Salad. Both were really good, as was the garlic bread!! I had the NY Stop steak, cooked perfectly to medium, with a baked potato and house salad. Our server asked if I'd like sautéed onions and/or mushrooms...so good. Definitely get them!! We took desserts to go...they didn't disappoint!! NOW OPEN! After having closed during the pandemic, I'm so glad to see that the Chat-A-Whyle is once again open and serving their second-to-none Sticky Buns. My family has been enjoying them for four generations now. I had a couple this morning, and they're every bit as good as they ever were. A yelp search for "sticky buns in Bath" this morning turned up McDonald's as the best bet -- an injustice to travelers that cannot be allowed to stand.
