I searched on Yelp for restaurants in the area. I came upon Chat-A-Whyle and it sounded like a great place. Upon arriving we stood and waited to be seated for a few minutes. Many customers were at the checkout so we waited patiently to be seated. After being told to sit anywhere we found a table. A cozy and seemingly clean place for a late lunch. It took a while for anyone to take a drink order or bring menu's. My wife got some menus from an empty table for us to look at. One of the waitresses apologized for the wait. Soon I believe the owner came and took our drink order. Another waitress came with our coffee and soda. I had a fish sandwich on an onion roll with a side of macaroni salad. The macaroni salad was ice cold from the salad bar and was delicious. The fish I believe was frozen fish, but it was good. My wife had meatloaf, with mashed potatoes and lots of gravy. For her side was broccoli which was steaming hot. Also a homemade yeast roll was part of her dinner which I sampled a taste of. Very good was my wife's review of her dinner. My husband and I stopped there 8/3 for lunch, our second time there. We both ordered the homemade Italian Wedding soup, which was fabulous! Not like the run of the mill, but so yummy. The most disgusting food! My mom and ordered reuben sandwiches mine with coleslaw and hers with macaroni salad. The corned beef in the reuben was fried and was horrible! the coleslaw was a mushy pureed old mess. the macaroni salad was dry and bad. the chips were good. lol this place was really busy and it is hard to understand why but I figure that the people that live in this degraded town either have very low standards or have no idea what real food is. Stopped in for a quick bite after a little road trip, at least we thought it would be quick. Not a very busy place at 3:45. We walk in and waitress/manager? was sitting at lunch counter and other 2 waitresses were walking around. We stood there for a good 5 minutes before the cook popped out of the kitchen and told us to take a seat. So we sat at a table, only to sit there for around 15 minutes, not so much as a menu or our drinks were taken. Single patron came in and sure enough they were taking his drink order getting ready to take his order. So we decided not to eat there after a long wait, I could see if a place was busy but they were not. Now as we were walking out the waitress or whoever she was was still sitting at the lunch counter, when I mentioned why we were leaving it was like no big deal. On road trips I've driven past Bath, NY countless times and never even knew this gem was here. Last month, on a lazy Saturday drive back to VA I discovered it on Yelp. Fantastic! Road food is always a risky endeavor, but finding this place was a definite win. I sat at the counter as most tables were filled with happy people and the server was friendly and efficient. I can't even remember what I ordered, but I remember walking out with that special satisfaction that comes when you know you've found someplace special. Ugh. I was sad after leaving here. They talked me into the "All you can eat" dinner bar for $8.99 and it consisted of salad, one soup, and chicken wings. There was nothing else on the buffet. They wanted to charge me for dessert. The soup was edible but extremely greasy and the wings were incredibly dry. Service was also rough. Getting a refill on my water has been one of the more difficult things I had to do this entire week. The wait staff wasn't very interested in being attentive of paying attention to us. Let's just say that I will never "chat" in that place again! My brother and I ate the specials and we stopped eating because of fear it would come out as it went in! Then we ordered dessert instead- since we thought what could they do to pie and ice cream--so wrong!! My strawberry-rhubarb pie was put down in front of me and I couldn't even look at my brother, I knew he would be laughing! It was flat, like run over by a tire! His hot fudge sundae came out in a cereal bowl with runny hot fudge- no thickness, said it was "light tasting like pudding". Visited in early August 2021 - I was really excited to be able to eat here again. The coffee was good & so was my omlette. However the service was some of the worst I've ever had - my sister has Celiacs disease & ordered her breakfast as such - told our server "no bread, I have an allergy, I can't eat it." Her food came out with bread anyway, the server actually told us she hadn't bothered to let the kitchen know, and then had a bad attitude when my sister had to send the plate back & order something else. (and yes, she really IS that sensitive to gluten). On top of that, the home fries were the worst I've ever had. Dry/way too crispy, absolutely no seasoning at all. We were informed they get cooked in the deep fryer - to each their own but that's wrong in my opinion. I'm a chef with 19 years of experience, I've worked at one of the best brunch spots in Buffalo, and that is the exact opposite of how homefries should be done. As a restaurant professional myself, I'll give them a second chance because I know they might just be having an off day. I get it. Restaurant jobs are NOT easy, especially right now. I'll try breakfast one more time (I'd like to try dinner there too as I've had excellent meals in the past!) but my first impression of this latest version of Chat-a-Whyle is not great. read more

BEST. PIE. EVER. Being from a big city, I'll be honest I wasn't expecting much from this little place. Not only was the service speedy and super friendly, but the food was prepared fresh to order and delicious. The best part was the piece of "Carmel Apple" pie I got to go. I warmed it up with a little vanilla ice cream later on that evening and it was the best piece of pie I've ever ate. I want to go back to try every flavor haha! Came in for a quick bite to eat. You will enjoy a good new menu with great choices. Did order from the specials of the day: Texas Hot With the Mac salad. The macaroni salad was excellent! Texas Hot was served plain, along with two pickles(I assumed that a Texas Hot is topped with sauce). The plate looked bare; no chips(nothing on the side). Service was very slow. Waitress said they only had one cook, no prep cook. This is sad for a restaurant that has many many tables, booth and counter seating. I would have no complaints except for the service is slow and there should be a little bit more on a plate with a sandwich, hot dog, etc. Oh, on top of everything else I got a $10 parking ticket because of the slow service! Great family restaurant serving home cooked food! A must try are their sticky buns! We had a light snack, cottage cheese, one had a sticky bun and I had an Apple Walnut Chicken Salad. They had whole walnuts, cranberries, shredded carrots and grilled chicken over ice burg lettuce. I was expecting a mayonnaise chicken salad and was pleasantly surprised! My meal was fresh and tasty. So for the first time in my life I was selected for jury duty. So on my lunch break I saw this place which was very close to the courthouse. The place Picture your average small town dinner with the baked goods sitting on the counter by the register. That is this place. The food I ordered breakfast I was to scared to try much else knowing I would be in the courtroom all day. I figured no one could screw up eggs, bacon, toast and hash browns. Which they didnt except for I ordered wheat toast and I got white which was disappointing but oh well. Can I ask you all why do most diners serve crappy coffee? That is the such a let down for me! It doesn't have to top notch coffee but at least it should be decent!! The service The waitress was busy since it was lunch time however she walked by use many times and never stopped to check us. So I had to stop her to ask for a refill on the coffee once or twice. The verdict All in all this place is average nothing special but nothing worth a stop if it is out of your way. On our way back from Canada, we decided to stop in Bath, a historic town with a nice looking Main Street, for dinner. There were a number of options, but we chose Chat-A-Whyle. It was a solid choice -- the restaurant is very clean, service is very friendly, food is decent. We especially liked dessert - strawberry pie. Prices are low, as well. As you sit watching and listening to the clientele, you very much feel the small-town vibe here. Everyone knows everyone, people are concerned with others. A man eating at the counter by himself was clearly somewhat mentally ill; the waitress constantly looked in on him, checking to see if he needed anything, asking if he was alright. At the end of his meal, she said 'Johnny already paid for your meal', referring to someone who'd been sitting at a nearby table earlier and had left shortly before. Those are the types of random acts of kindness that are not seen too often in a large city, but I'm sure they are commonplace in Bath. read more

Yelp should allow half stars for ratings, I feel 2 is too low but 3 is too high for a mediocre rating. So 2.5 to even it out. Anyhow, disappointed. I love diners and I know everyone cooks differently but still. French toast, I've never come across a place who does NOT use cinnamon! So I ended up with an eggy tasting bread. Asked for cinnamon and got a cinn/sugar mix which was "ok" I suppose. Still didn't mask the eggie taste. 14 yr old Daughter got the same and she wasn't pleased either. Sausage was good at least. Husband got the scrambler. Very very dry!!!! Eggs and hashbrowns, just very dry. 7 year old got an omelette. Now call me stupid, but an omelette is suppose to have "something" IN it to START with, otherwise it's just a scrambled egg cooked flat. So $1-2 for 1 actual scrambled egg, or 3.29 for a plain egg omelette then ADD $1 for cheese?! Wth?! um...ok.?! This place probably only tastes good if you're over 65. Our party of under 30's definitely brought the age ratio down a lot. I ordered an omelette - it was rather bland. The home fries were also pretty blah. My husband got the salisbury steak and thought it tasted like a very plain burger. He thought it was supposed to have gravy on it, but it came without. The waiter gave us some A1 which helped it out a bit. The french fries were a winner, and the wait staff seemed pleasant enough. My brother in law got the fried chicken and liked it (but it's also pretty hard to mess up fried chicken!). Overall, if you're a local and over 65, this seems to be the place to hang out. When you picture a diner in a small town, you are here. There are on the main drag with every color and shape of brick buildings around it. The small town theme is clear from the counter with regulars, and you know they are regulars, to the salad bar that has salad and not much else. Like all diners, the key is not the menu but the white special board. It was loaded with gems on a saturday lunch time. A couple of words to look for Bacon Macaroni & Cheese, it comes with the salad bar. It was to die for! Mix of cheeses but mostly sharp cheddar and smoky bacon. As part of salad bar, you can stuff yourself into a cholestrol coma!! But hold on there is more...the ham and bean soup is awesome. Again off the board, another good choice hamburger vegetable soup and chickie salad. You will know the town events by the time you leave. They boyfriend and I spent the night in Bath as I was trekking from OH to RI for a summer internship. We were looking for a place to grab a decent brunch since the hotel's continental breakfast was abysmal. We found Chat-a-Whyle through a web search and asked one of the hotel employees about it. She said it was decent for breakfast, so away we went. A nice feature is an all-you-can-eat breakfast bar for about $7. This is what my boyfriend chose as it had an array of eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy, fruit, and pastries. Not seeing anything remotely healthy on the breakfast bar, I opted for an egg beaters omelet with peppers, onions, tomatoes, and salsa. I asked that it be cooked without butter or oil and they were more than happy to oblige. Both the BF and I were quite impressed with our meals. He over stuffed himself on fattening goodies and I found my omelet to be just a tad too big. All of the food was fresh and delicious. Having lived in bath, ny as a wee-lil towhead on a purple banana bike circa late 70s,I have only since returned and visited this restaurant for the very first time. Classic hometown restaurant on small main street. Quality food and service with moderate prices. Clean restaurant, lots of window, very comfortable room in back and also a few talbes in the front room, and of course counter service. Quck service if needed, or I must admit my childhood friend and I whyle'd away 2 hours over breakfast catching up and never felt hurried or that we were a burden. Good ole-home manners brought through the service and attidude. As Bath is the county seat, and this is just a few blocks from the county buildings including the courthouse there is always a nice bustle in the place, but never an impetuous que for a table. If hoping to keep a low profile and not see anyone in town you may know then DO NOT GO HERE.. otherwise for what it purports to be, it's great. read more

Very much a 50s environment, along wth 50s friendliness and manners. This is a small town expanded diner. The menu is all-American fare...not much that jumps off the page. I ordered the pork roast with mashed potatoes and dressing. It came out on the dish looking like a small mountain smothered in this very brown, thick gravy....gives new meaning to the term "rib-sticken." Homemade dinner rolls were dry and stale. May appeal to the "early bird special" crowd. Amusing, quirky waiter....but not much else going on here. read more
