This was my first time at the Chart House. I was with a large group of people. Service was extremely slow, but it might have been because we were a larger group. The appetizer of coconut shrimp was delicious. Most everyone in my group got the Filet. I added blue cheese butter to mine which made it divine! The food portions were small but delicious and my steak was cooked perfectly. The restaurant location was great with a view of Lake Tahoe. The dining room was quaint but very loud when busy. Service was excellent, especially because we were a big party. We had a tuna appetizer that was amazing and then for dinner got the caesar salad with salmon. It was delicious. Salmon was cooked perfectly. The dressing was non-traditional, but still great--I think it's more of like an Italian dressing. Went for HH with my husband and son. The service was ok, not good, not horrible and the restaurant has a nice view. Both my son and husband had the fish tacos. I had the kimchi calamari and the fried avocado with shrimp ceviche. My son really enjoyed the fish tacos as did my husband but he didn't particularly care for the sauce. I shared the same sentiment about the sauce on the kimchi calamari. I loved the fry on the calamari and the vegetables but I would have much preferred having the sauce on the side. While it was good, it was bit too rich to be enjoyed for the entire appetizer. It became a bit too much after about 3-4 bites. I just had a glass of white wine but my husband had the fleur d lis and he enjoyed it. After enjoying dinner elsewhere, we decided to stop by Chart House for dessert before heading back to our resort. I had seen key lime pie listed on their website menu, and as a devoted fan of a good key lime pie, I was excited to try it. We sat at the bar and ordered the key lime pie and a chocolate lava cake. The bartender informed us that the lava cake takes 40 minutes, and we had no issue waiting. However, just 15 minutes later, she arrived with both desserts, explaining that the chef had an extra lava cake ready. At first, we were surprised by the quick turnaround, but as soon as we started eating, the disappointment set in. The lava cake, priced at $16, lacked any molten center--there was no "lava" to speak of. When I pointed this out, the bartender casually says, *"Yeah, that happens a lot. Corporate won't let us change the recipe."* Her response was shocking--this is supposed to be a high-end restaurant and yet they knowingly serve an overbaked lava cake without any intent to fix the issue. Having worked as a server for eight years at a high-end steakhouse, I know how important it is to get dishes right, especially desserts. If a lava cake isn't made properly, it should be replaced--not dismissed with an excuse. Guests shouldn't have to accept a poorly executed dish and be disappointed with their decision of coming in. Unfortunately, the key lime pie was also a letdown. Instead of the tangy, refreshing flavor I love, it was overwhelmingly sweet--almost unbearably so. I've had key lime pie at restaurants across the country, and this one barely deserved a score of 1 out of 10. As a baker, I have a deep appreciation for great desserts, and I believe that if a business is charging premium prices, the quality needs to match. Sadly, this was not the case at Chart House. My family and I come to this restaurant every time we visit Lake Tahoe. Every visit has been amazing except for our recent visit on 1/18. We had a fairly large party, made a reservation and hyped it up to our friends and family whose first time it was visiting the restaurant. Service -Things started off well after we got our appetizers and first round of beverages but things changed when we started to notice that our waiter did not come to our table for at least 45 minutes. No refills on water and no updates on the wait and we stayed patient especially since it was a holiday weekend. Our waiter seemed very stressed and I finally asked if someone could come check in and give us an update on our food and refill our waters and still nothing. Food -We finally received our food after 1.5 hours and 2 steaks were not cooked as requested, a fish dish was cold in the middle, 2 seafood pastas had shellfish that were completely closed and the toast to one of the dishes was completely burnt. Recovery -The last thing we wanted to do is complain but when so many things went wrong and our waiter seemed like he might need some help is when my husband went to go speak to someone about it. A manager came to our table to speak to us and his tone of voice and lack of empathy for the situation was very off putting...the owner of the restaurant even asked us what we should do to make it right...why are we (as customers) having to tell you how to do your job. For the bad experience, we figured a genuine apology was coming our way, maybe a round of drinks or a dessert on the house but all we got was 2 plates taken off our bill only because my husband asked for it to be removed, they didn't even think to do this. I truly hope no one else has this same experience here and management will look into this and do better for future guests. read more

When you don't get the chance to go out to what is considered a high end restaurant very often you come with a level of expectation - you expect to have an over the top experience - food, beverages, ambience, views and service. I was disappointed and I feel like it wasn't worth getting dressed up this time. The highlight of the night was our waiter or host - he was incredibly friendly and helped us with questions regarding the menu and the drinks - really very well done although overpriced. The downfall - the ambiance - we had two gentlemen at the next table that thought it appropriate to speak at a volume that the entire side of the restaurant could hear while using expletives in every sentence. We thought of course the staff will say something but it was apparent that they spent $$ there and were known so it was allowed to continue while I used it as a learning lesson for my daughter that was with us. Next the food - we ordered an appetizer and a salad, one pasta dish and one fish dish which we were excited to share since it was luxurious in its description! It came and the entire portion could have been plated on a tea saucer - for $58. That led to splitting the pasta dish two ways and the salad two ways to make sure a pizza order wasn't in our future. The pasta dish just had too much garlic and the salad was underwhelming. I recommend the meatballs as an appetizer though! They were delicious! At the end the bill of $200 came and we decided eating out in Tahoe wasn't quite worth it these days - maybe if it had met the expectation this review would have been a cheerleader for luxury spending once in a while but I just can't do it. read more

It was our anniversary and our menu was printed with a Happy yy Anniversary wish which I thought was an ad for the number of years the restaurant was open, but our waiter explained to us that the menu was printed especially for us. SO UNEXPECTEDLY BAD! We came here to celebrate our engagement, something my fiancé told the staff ahead of time. When we arrived, they had made special menus for us, which was a great surprise. Unfortunately, the message didn't make sense and was filled with typos. We didn't care all that much but the lack of attention to detail on something that small just set the stage for the remainder of the night. We decided to go with the 'Chart your Course' 3 course dinner and the mojito flights for two. The drinks were fine but you had to pour the liquor yourself and the glasses didn't allow for that at all. For the first course of our dinner, both the salad and soup were mediocre. For our main course, we both got the steak, ordering a medium and medium rare. The biggest downfall of the night was that the prime ribs came out without a sear at all. It was like it was completely overlooked. Our waitress didn't come back around until it was completely unreasonable to ask for it to be sent back. The lava cake as our 3rd course was dry and not worth it. Overall, it was incredibly disappointing for a restaurant that tends to receive positive reviews, especially when celebrating something so big. We would never recommend this place to anyone visiting the Tahoe area. It was extremely overpriced for what you receive. You'll have a better experience elsewhere! read more

I guess I will start off with the good, since there was very little of that. Our server was awesome! She was very attentive, helpful, and overall great! Other than that, the experience was very unpleasant. To start off, we got drinks at the bar while we waited for our table. I order some passion bubbly drink I think. It was terrible. All sugar. The bartender seemed new, he had to reference the menu when I asked for the drink, it is 1 of the main drinks on the menu. I asked him how his day was going, making small talk, it's Christmas. He didn't really have much to say besides I can't wait to get out of here. I totally understand, but you know what you signed up for. It's not like they just told you yesterday that the restaurant is open on Christmas. I'll fast forward to my main dish. I got the surf and turf. I asked for medium rare. The steak came out rare as ever. I don't get it. On top of that I had to wait 5 minutes to eat my steak because the expo that brought it out didn't give me a steak knife. I've been to the Chart House multiple times across the country. Excellent every time. I'm here now for a Mother's Day meal. Absolutely horrible. Prefixed menu had some good choices but the cook and and spicing of the food was far below average. It was a basic dining experience for a $320 meal. read more

Went out for our anniversary dinner last night at The Chart House in Lake Tahoe. Dinner was fabulous. Our server Lauren did a wonderful job they even went so far as to personalize our menus and gave us the best table in the house. Our shrimp, mango, avocado tower was awesome. I had the lobster bisque, which is the second best lobster bisque I have ever had. ( we all know that mine from my cookbook is better) Marianne had a wonderful Caesar salad large portions on both. She had the salmon with rice and I had the shrimp with pancetta lemon garlic sauce with linguine again no skimping on the portions. All the food was excellent and they gave us little mini lava cakes for dessert. If I could give it more stars I would! Our meal consisted of oysters, shrimp cocktail, calamari and sea bass (with gnocchi and mushrooms). Everything was spot on, perfectly cooked, fresh and flavorful without being over seasoned. The shrimp were large and beautifully presented with the a cocktail sauce with just the right amount of kick. My sea bass was thick and delicately cooked-- the gnocchi were seared with a tiny crisp, and all of the flavors were fresh and perfectly balanced. Another bonus was the fact that they had a kids' menu (often times if we want to treat ourselves to a nice dinner, our daughter ends up subsisting on bread and butter, but the fact that the chart house offered a kids' menu was such a nice surprise)! The chocolate lava cake was delicious. While the lava did absorb into the cake and didn't ooze out, it was delicious-- not too sweet-- and the bits of toffee on top were an unexpected highlight! We came here through the HGV Ultimate Access dinning experience event and it was amazing! There was a group of about 16 of us participating in this event. We were greeted with champagne and then served a three course meal in which I had a salad, steak, lobster, mashed potatoes and cake for dessert. It was amazing! There is a limited view of Lake Tahoe through the pines trees on the back deck. The wait staff worked really hard to keep everyone happy and full. This was a great dinning experience! read more

Hubs are I in town for a week getaway. Only one night in South Lake Tahoe and our concierge recommended this place and gave us a coupon for a free ap or dessert ( which we unfortunately left behind in our room). He also stated that "this restaurant has the best view of the lake in the city." I said to myself hmmm Chart House? Chart House as in the Landry's repertoire of restaurants? Yes, it was/is. We called the restaurant directly as we did not have a reservation. The young lady on the line stated that it wasn't a problem, but it was approximately a 30 to 45 minute wait. We understood and said that we would go to the bar. When we arrived, she explained again about the wait which we were aware of, and we went to the bar for beverages. It took quite some time for the two bartenders to serve. It was just two female bartenders, and the restaurant was slammed with customers. So they were pretty busy. But when I was finally able to place the order, they were quick with the drinks. Hubs drank the Oregon pinot noir, and I am on the hunt for the perfect vodka gimlet. This was not the perfect vodka gimlet by the way. It was drinkable and fine, but not perfect. I would say that the food here is pretty pricey. Especially for a chain restaurant. I overheard several people say that the best thing going is the happy hour. We opted for the prefix menu at $64 per person. We had our choice of soup or salad, a choice of an entrée, and the infamous lava cake dessert. We each chose the clam chowder soup. It was hot and tasty. We each chose the prime rib. It was a super thin, cut of meat (menu claimed 10 ounces) and not very tasty. We each prefer our meat cooked, medium rare. And while it was a super thin piece of meat, they both appeared overcooked. They were unseasoned and bland, but were accompanied by a tasty, horseradish cream and a jus. It also came with a small serving of a potato mash. The mash was lukewarm, and in my opinion, not very tasty. It was reminiscent of mashed turnips. Just a really odd taste to me. We had also requested a serving of bread. It came with some lavosh crackers and a few rolls. Our server Holly was polite and personable. This was a Monday evening and we were stunned at how busy and packed the restaurant was. Obviously this is the place to go in South Lake Tahoe. Both of us were underwhelmed by the lava cake. It's obviously their staple, but it's not a true lava cake in the definition. A lava cake is steaming hot with a melty oozing center. This was not that. The cake itself was pretty dry and there was nothing melty in the center. It was topped with a very soft ice cream and a Heath bar esque toffee crumble. It was just OK in my opinion. While the restaurant has several viewing opportunities. I wouldn't necessarily say that this was the best view of the lake in the city. And the reasoning behind is that the number of years have passed with tree growth that blocks the view. I imagine 25 to 45 years ago it was the best view but the trees are enormous now. And you can only see snippets of the lake. If you're one of those diners that don't mind the chain experience then by all means, I'd recommend this place to you. However, I feel there are probably more dining opportunities in Southlake Tahoe. read more

This has to be one of the worst meals I have had in the last few years. We were in Tahoe between Christmas and New Years. I had family out from the east coast. My brother made the reservation. We had a party of nine. All the things were ordered. They ran out of one of their regular items so I couldn't even get the salmon I wanted. I subbed out for a steak I could split with my husband and I ordered a salad and extra shrimp. The steak was nothing to write home about and the side of grilled shrimp came well after I finished my steak. The steak came with the most gluey over salted and nasty mashed potatoes I've ever had. The side of green beans was over salted too. Salt was really the only flavor at the chart house. Other people at the table had food issues. My brother's shrimp pasta was enriched spaghetti swimming in butter/grease with a few shrimp. Super unappetizing. He's a bottomless pit and usually finishes everything. He left half his dinner. There were several other items that had issues with preparation or service just not showing up and misfires from the kitchen. I have ten years in the restaurant industry so I give a lot of leeway for doing the best you can while slammed at the holiday and 86's. Running out of things happens, but you offer something and try to make it better. You don't slam down a menu and say pick something new we just ran out. So, I'm not giving any grace with this review because they did nothing to make it better and the server couldn't have cared less. Oh - then I went home and violently shat my dinner out over the next 10 hours as my intestines turned inside out and I almost single-handedly blew out the sewer. So yeah - this gets one star. I hate to say this but this was our worst visit to Chart House. We have been coming to this restaurant for many years and this time was a disappointment especially on Mothers Day. My wife ordered the steak medium well and I ordered the prime rib medium. When the food arrived my prime rib was just a little warm and the potatoes were a little cold, my wife's steak was seared just a little but raw on the inside through out. We ended up taking the steak home and finished cooking it our selves. Not a very good ending for Mothers Day. read more

My first time here was with my date for junior prom in high school and have come additional times over the years. I must say food and service have been consistent through the years. On this visit our reservations was at 6:45, just in time to catch the sunset through their large windows. Service is what you would expect from a steakhouse. Food was delicious, all our dishes were perfectly prepared/cooked. The only downside of our dinner was they ran out of prime rib and crème brûlée for the night. Both items my daughter wanted, so she settled for a filet mignon and sorbet. The waiter brought out a complimentary slice of mid pie for us, which was nice. Pricing was what you would expect for a steakhouse. This place does get busy, even on weekdays, so make sure you make reservations. read more

My first impression of the Chart house is Never to come here again. The hostess was rude when I asked her a question, acted like I was waisting her time, no smile, aloof and should not have that job. The food was very subpar. I had to send just about everything back. Steak, dry, lobster & shrimp carbonara was dry and tasteless. The only food that was actually great was the crab cake. I had to go over my bill cause they even charged me a drink I didn't have. I came for a birthday celebration and left very disappointed. I can say, we will never be back. Went here for a bachelor trip dinner for one of my buddies looking for a nice dinner. To say the absolute least this was not a nice dinner. Had reservations at 8 didn't get seated until 8:30. Service was ok it was really strange when everyone around us got bread and we didn't. We then asked the waitress why that was and she said you only get bread if you ask for it. I seriously wish we didn't ask for it because it took them 30 minutes to come out with the dryest excuse for bread I've ever had in my life. It was like trying to chew a hockey puck. The food was shocking. Clam chowder was clam water. I got the shrimp linguine dish and it was inedible, pasta was so dry like it was sitting for hours. Shrimp super dry and it tasted like what a dishwasher smells like. Everyone else got steak and mashed potatoes. Steak was again ok at best and I've had better mashed potatoes at Applebees literally no seasoning. Dessert was good, got the chocolate lava cake. But for $100 give or take a person I will never be coming back. Extremely disappointed. We went here on a Wednesday night for our Anniversary. Our server was nice but didn't go above and beyond to make any conversation. The lobster bisque was amazing as usual. The new veggie chips with the avocado shrimp stack were not good. The regular tortilla chips are better. The New York strip was cooked perfectly. The shrimp and scallops were delicious with the spinach gnocci. The fauxito was not good- definitely wouldn't order again. The "lava" cake had no lava and was pretty dry. When we went to pay we knew we had a $75 Landry's credit. I told the server and she came back saying she took off $50. I inquired about the difference and she said "I don't know your going to have to take it up with Landry's." Definitely in an irritated tone. I pulled up my Landry's account just to verify and she pointed to one of the $25 and said "I'm sure that one is expired." I didn't make a big deal of it because it truly wasn't a big deal but what bothers me is that the servers do an excellent job at selling Landry's but as soon as there is an issue it appears it is my problem. Anyways, we will be back if for anything the lobster bisque because it's our favorite! read more

The Chart House is located in the beautiful South Lake Tahoe mountains. I wished we were there during the daylight, I am sure the view would have been spectacular. The restaurant has beautiful ambiance sith dark wood furnishing. Its a pretty big restaurant with table against the windows, all spread around the restaurant and booths. The service was very attentive but slow. I guess it is for the dining experience but 2 hours for a meal of 1 shared appetizer 1 dinner salad and 2 entrees is a little long for me. They made special, drinks at your table so that was fun to watch. The food was very good but was it great, no. Go to the Chart House for the ambiance and experience at least once. read more

A short drive up the hill from the hotels at state line. We made reservations 1 week ahead and came here for our first time. They have large windows along one side of the restaurant to give a great view! The only downside is during sunset they are adjusting the blinds every so often as to not get in anyone's eyes. But does cause a bit of distraction if you're seated next to a window. But it's not a big deal and I appreciate the thought and consideration that goes into doing that every night. The service was great! Food was fabulous, and truly a fun time was had by all of us. I do notice that sometimes their menu changes! So do keep that in mind. Sometimes what you see posted on here (menu, food photos, etc.) is a little different than when you get there so hopefully you don't get your heart set on ordering something that they don't offer at the time you visit. Overall, I totally see why this is recommended so much by visitors and hotel staff. I definitely recommend it now to those who are looking for nice restaurants in this area. read more
