The restaurant is very nice with great views of the Potomac River. The food was excellent. I started out with the Oyster Sampler and a cup of New England Clam Chowder. Both were very good. For the main course I had the Sea Bass + Lobster Risotto which was really good. For desert I had the Hot Chocolate Lava Cake . Although the food was good the service was disappointing. There were many times where we went long periods of time without anyone checking on us which was odd because at the beginning we had two servers. Fresh seafood simply prepared at a reasonable price, and served by friendly staff in a beautiful restaurant with scenic views of the Old Town water front. Came to Chart House for lunch and a libation or two. The restaurant is stylish on the inside, reminiscent of a beach resort's fine dining restaurant. The views from their windows are breathtaking, with clear lines of sight to the Capitol and National Harbor. I prefer indoor dining, but the vast majority of people seem to opt for outdoor dining on the large patio when the weather permits. The menu is well organized with calorie counts clearly displayed. There were no overly gourmet for no apparent reason ingredients or preparation titles used to by establishments to coax customers into paying much higher prices for regular food items. I loved that I could order many of the items simply grilled, blackened, or some other preparation. I ordered the Mahi, blackened, and it was accompanied by broccolini and mashed potatoes. The portion size was perfect and the sides were fresh and outstanding. Chart House's chefs understand how fish should be cooked and seasoned. Lastly, I did not sample the dessert but I did have the Pomegranate Mojito made with Bacardi, DeKuyper Pomegranate Liqueur, Monin Mojito and muddled fresh mint & lime juice. It was so good I had it twice. Five stars for the ambiance, affable service, and good food. Side notes: difficult parking, but just use the pay garages in Old Town for about $15 to $20 a day rates. The Potomac water taxi docks directly next to it with access to National Harbor and the D.C. Wharf. Easy reservations using Open Table. Came on a Friday for happy hour. The staff were very friendly and attentive. They also provided good recommendations. I had the two moscato sangrias and 1 mango mojito. The moscato sangrias were my favorite. The mango mojito was good just too sweet for my liking. The lobster tartare was good once I squeezed a lemon over it. I decided to come here for my birthday dinner a few days ago. We got a great seat in the upper window section overlooking the water which was nice. They have an expansive wine menu (the whole back page of the menu was nothing but wines) so anyones wine needs should be met here. I ordered the filet mignon with mashed potatoes, coconut shrimp and a kids fish and chips meal. The shrimp was cool, and came with three dipping sauces (only enjoyed two of them though). The filet though, I was underwhelmed. Not saying it was bad in any way, but it basically just existed as a piece of meat. I ended up ordering a side of blue cheese butter and that livened it up a bit. I was told that the fish amd chips wasnt spectacular either, but I didnt try it so I cant verify. Advice: Avoid any holidays & any fixed over-priced meal offerings here. I am somewhat disappointed in the meals we received for Father's day, as they were a significantly overpriced fixed price menu three course dinner for $72/person. Yes, $72 per person. The meal selection options were acceptable, but this was a $50 meal at best. I had a half sized caesar salad for starters, a surf & turf (6 decent sized grilled tiger prawns), smallish 7 oz NY Strip steak (overcooked, as in medium not medium-rare), skin on mashed potatoes, and a smallish key lime pie. Wife had the same, but with a 14 oz Sirloin steak, undercooked (medium-rare vs medium well.) Daughter just had the BBQ shrimp appetizer for $16. Service was slow/sparse/minimal, given the packed house on father's day, but then they only had to deliver bread basket, drinks & a twice forgotten coffee (which they didn't charge for) before the check. Something tells me they were badly understaffed. But it was polite and modestly courteous. Food quality was "average" by any standard you want to use - in that my grilled shrimp were not seasoned and bland, but well cooked, the steak was "ok" but not that tender or flavorful, and the key lime pie was "meh." And unfortunately the salad had grains of sand in it. (ugh!) The ambience in the dining area upstairs was loud, although it quieted down after some of the larger families left. The views were nice on the river, although we didn't get a window seat as I had hoped for. Also, if you looked at the ceiling, you'd see they hadn't fixed the water damage from a couple of years ago, as the sealant was beginning to peel off. Was it worth $72 for what we got? No. Had it only been me, I wouldn't have stayed. I'd say this was a $40-50 meal at best. The service staff were slammed, so I don't blame them, and the kitchen was slammed too... but I won't be back if they do "prix-fix" menus & service again. But the management should be slammed, because for me, this was price gouging- and hence the loss of at least two more stars that could have been earned. And I know I can get an equal (or better) meal elsewhere for a lot less, with more personable wait service. If this trend continues, it's essentially off my list of good eateries and down among the "tourist trap" restaurants that we now avoid. So I will think twice before dining here again. Food is fair to "semi-ok" for flavor, but the prices are way, way above fair market value to me- and bordering on excessive. read more

We had to ask for a bread basket; unlike other patrons, one was not provided to us. We ordered a crab dip, as seen in the attached pictures. We were served cold bread with chunks of butter. The bread should have been toasted, and when we told our waitress, she asked if we wanted new bread--weirdo. By the time the new bread came out, our entrees also did. I asked for no onions on my Nova platter--what do we see on the plate? Onions. I ordered a creme brulee for dessert, only for the waitress to come to my table 30 minutes later and say, " Have we decided on the creme brulee? Should I put it in?" The answer is now no. We had our family of 5 and my sisters family of 5 for a dinner. The raw oysters were tasteless. The service was slow and the restaurant was practically empty. The filet mignon was the issue. It tasted like burned rubber and then on the inside it tasted rotten. The smell was sour and foul. We returned 4 steaks and were not charged. The taste in my mouth after this experience ruined it for me. It was upsetting because my expectation was average going into the restaurant. You go to the Chart House for ambiance. It's situated right on the water and on a nice day, sitting on their deck, you'll get a fantastic view. The staff are competent and friendly, the bartenders and chefs do the best with what they have. This restaurant definitely sits on its "perfect location laurels" and in the six years I've been dropping in, has done nothing to change that. Their food is at best, mediocre, and it's clearly due to poorly chosen product to ensure a profit is made. Their cocktails are visually inventive but lacking in taste. All of this comes down to owners not wanting to do more what with they have, and lacking in appreciation for a truly well rounded dining experience. It took forever to get things - including getting our water filled. Echoing other reviews, host/hostess staff were rude and bordering on hostile toward my group and I. We arrived a bit too early for our reservation, and the hostess actively chided us for our timing and rolled her eyes when we suggested we'd put our names in to see if we could get an earlier table instead. I've been to the Chart House a handful of times over the years with my family. I would have once considered the restaurant one of the premier dining experiences in Old Town but now I'd say it has been replaced by some of the newer restaurants in the area. Chart House is still a place you can come to be flashy and spend a lot of money but it is a total snooze fest. The crowd is very old and quite touristy, which unfortunately means the food is quite bland and uninteresting. The food isn't terrible by any means, it's fine but not exciting and the same could be said about the service. Growing up in the area, I recall coming to the Chart House and thinking it was fancy but as I've matured I realize it is just an expensive price tag. Food wise, my party got the Crab Cakes, the Herb Crusted Salmon, and the Baked Stuff Shrimp. My meal was the Crab Cakes as the entree, which comes with two crab cakes and one side for $50-ish. The price wasn't the issue but the crab cakes were on the small side and could have been seasoned better. The side I chose was the mango rice and I enjoyed that with the crab. The Herb Crusted Salmon looked decent but wasn't substantial. The Baked Stuff Shrimp was 6 butterflied shrimp with little crab meatballs on top, which looked good but wasn't enough of a meal to be substantial either. Overall, my issue with the food is that the entrees were all a smaller serving size than expected. For the price point, the entrees should come with a side and a vegetable to make a complete meal. We did find a nice bottle of wine on the menu and that was a highlight. I never realized before that Chart House is a chain restaurant and it's a shame that it holds such a prominent spot in Old Town. The exterior of the restaurant is beautiful and it's right on the waterfront. I haven't been to Old Town in quite a long time and unfortunately I couldn't get a reservation at the restaurant I truly wanted to go to. What a way to spend our anniversary dinner right !! I must admit, the ambiance was nice and romantic and we were sat in a picturesque room by a fireplace. My husband ordered the Cream of Crab Soup and Baked Stuffed Shrimp (Crab Stuffed w Veggie Couscous). He absolutely loved his food. The Soup had generous amounts of crab and was seasoned well. His Baked Stuffed Shrimp was amazing. I ordered Fleur D'Lis Cocktail, Calamari, Salmon and Asparagus. Yes, no, yes & no! My Cocktail was so good! It was smooth but not overly strong yet not weak either. It was the perfect blend. My calamari had absolutely no taste. It was literally just fried calamari, thats it. Not 1 seasoning. They had one server covering the entire bar dining area where our table was, and the wait time was god-awful. Even though he was super courteous, there are only so many tables that one server can cover. I wish they warned us ahead of time so we could have dined in their main dining room instead (where they clearly had more servers). Their coconut shrimp appetizer was the one and only delicious dish that was done right. Kimchee calamari was awful - wasn't even a kimchee flavor and the flavor was a bit odd tasting. My friend ordered the turf and surf pasta. He did not know it was a cold pasta dish and the "thai cilantro garlic sauce" was mostly a sweet flavor, ruining his pasta experience. I ordered their mixed seafood grill: the lobster en croute cedar was OK, but both plank salmon and proscuitto wrapped shrimp were very salty, particularly the wrapped shrimp! The bartenders do not know how to mix cocktails - all of our drinks tasted pretty awful and they had no clue about proportion of the required ingredients for each drink. She began talking about us, which was obvious because she and another server kept looking over at out party. We saw her come in the bathroom sounding rude to another server saying, "People are looking for you!" The girl was in the bathroom washing her hands for Christ sake! The girl hurried out of the bathroom and I looked at my daughter and automatically knew this Angela was a bully. She was disgusting and made us very uncomfortable. Her attitude mediocre at best and she needs to work in a back office and not with the public. Now- our servers were simply amazing! Kenia and Bakniya were so patient and on top of their game. They served our entire party with efficiency! They seated our entire party without incident. Bakniya took a picture of us on the steps! The food came rather quickly and was delicious. I ate the prime rib, I tend to like my steak pretty rare, and I've never been able to get prime rib at a restaurant cooked the way I like it until now. Just phenomenal. My husband had the shrimp pasta and it was incredibly flavorful with several large shrimp. I didn't catch our servers name but he was very attentive and the manager even made time to come chat with us on a busy Sunday evening. Hadn't been to Chart house in years. We decided to give it a try for Sunday brunch. Unfortunately by the time we got there, we just missed their brunch. All good, because their dinner menu had some great options as well. We started off with the oysters, which came out with the cocktail sauce/ horseradish combo, lemon, and Tabasco. The one thing missing for me that I love with my oysters is the mignonette, which is the vinegar type sauce that you can pour onto the oysters. I thought that was a standard accompaniment but could be with only certain oysters. No expert when it comes to oysters. As we were getting going on the oysters, the table next to us ordered the shrimp cocktail, which looked awesome when it came out (attached a video for ya)! So of course we had to order some for ourselves. Prob my favorite dish. 5 huge sized shrimp, nicely chilled, served with cocktail sauce. Cocktail sauce had just the right kick to it with the horseradish. For the entree I ordered the lobster and shrimp linguine, which was filled with lobster and shrimp. Definitely get your money's worth from this dish. Pasta was cooked perfectly and it is topped with this gorgeous piece of basil that you must break up and mix in with the pasta!! My only issue with this dish, was that it lacked salt. It was very under seasoned. I had to add lots of salt and pepper to the dish. For the second entree we went with the chart your course, which is a great deal because you get a salad and desert with your meal. You end up saving if your plan is to get each separately. The chopped salad wasn't very exciting, so that was a bummer. However the prime rib and lava cake were both delicious. I'm not a huge fan of med rare steak, but I was ok with this. What made this experience great aside from the minor setbacks was our waiter. Extremely attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly.
