We sat at the bar and bartender welcomed us with a big smile and ask if we wanted to have something to eat at bar so she could give us dinnerware. Wife had an Ice tea and I had a martini. Then placed order for food. We both had baked clams, wife had the special watermelon salad and I had the ugly tomatoes salad. Both were delicious, Watermelon salad had a big slice of watermelon with arugula and feta with balsamic dressing, my ugly tomato salad had thick slices of fresh, large tomatoes with arugula, crispy fried onions, blue cheese crumble, and balsamic dressing. I haven't been back to Charlotte's in about 40 years and I think I went back too soon. With full disclosure, my significant other lovd her dinner. When we arrived, our table wasn't ready. We waited 15 minutes to be seated. It then took our waiter a while to finally take our order (just two people) as they seemed to be understaffed. It took another 30 minutes for ou food to be served. I had Veal Parmesan, it was OK, not great....the veal was pounded so much it almost had disappeared....the side of Linguini was served with a different sauce, the one with the Parmesan was much better. I ate part of the meal and decided I didn't want a doggy bag. My signicant other had stuffed Flounder and really enjoyed her Entree so we ha very different reactions. We went to Charlotte's restaurant in Newtown Square to celebrate two anniversaries and a birthday. There were five of us, and at our request - due to hearing difficulties - we were seated at a quiet table away from the main dining area. Service was a bit slow, but it wasn't a problem since we were enjoying each other's company and conversation. I ordered the baked cod with Newburg sauce, priced at $30. It came with a small iceberg salad and a baked potato. When the entrée arrived, it was covered with what looked like half a cup of thick, untoasted breadcrumbs dumped on top. It was immediately unappetizing. Since everyone else had received their meals and no server was nearby, I scraped off as many breadcrumbs as I could and tried to eat part of the dish. Unfortunately, the remaining breadcrumbs quickly absorbed the sauce and turned the entire entrée into a soggy, mushy mess. At that point, I stopped eating it. The next time we saw our server was when she came to clear the plates. I explained that I had not enjoyed the dish. She said she would see what the manager could do. When she returned, she told me the manager would remove the cod from the bill, but I would still be charged for the salad and the baked potato, of which I had eaten about half. (The potato itself was tiny, shriveled, and not particularly good.) The reaction at our table was immediate. All ten eyebrows shot up. None of us had ever heard of such a thing, so I asked to speak with the manager directly. When the manager came to the table, she explained that because I had eaten part of the entrée, she could not remove the entire charge. She also said I should have gone looking for a server as soon as I realized I was unhappy with the meal. I disagreed, pointing out that no one was available and that I had done my best to salvage the dish. She walked away before the conversation ended. The bill arrived, and the charges were: $10 for the side salad and $8 for the baked potato. At that point, the cost wasn't really the issue - it was the principle. The manager's response left a far worse impression than the entrée itself. read more

From the moment we sat down, they were warm, attentive, and genuinely personable -- the kind of service that makes a neighborhood restaurant feel like your place. After nearly 40 years I finally tried Charlotte's... And I have to say, after reading the reviews I was expecting a nightmare scenario, but I was pleasantly surprised. Now, understand I was there on Easter Sunday, a day of the week they are not typically open, and while there were more walkers and canes than cocktails visible, the food wasn't half bad. I had the Eggplant Parm, and something I rarely have because my wife is allergic to eggplant, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Others weren't quite as enthused about their meals, but the Crabcakes did get high marks. All in all Charlotte's is an old school restaurant, and it shows in the decor, the gruff hospitality staff, and the menu, but my experience was uplifting after such a low bar had been set. Our waitress was very nice, helpful and attentive. The real humorous turn was one person ordering iced tea and receiving a bottle of Turkey Hill iced tea. It got a chuckle from all of us. The atmosphere is stuck in another era. Not very clean. Service was poor. Waited twenty minutes to be acknowledged. And then the waiter said be right back and did not come right back. By the time he was back, we had waited so long and it was getting late. Ordered a small salad with vinegar and oil on the side. My friend ordered chowder. She reported as not really good. I was made to wait until after she consumed her soup until my salad was brought, we are there now for 45 minutes. We both opted out of drinks as everything was taking so long. Her clams came and my salad. The glams were sitting in a bowl with the cooking water and butter for dipping was on the side. It did not look appealing. These were 15.00 clams. Each about the size of a fingernail. The salad came with a side of orange oil. The server did not come back and I have the salad to the busboy as it was inedible with the clip of oil. My friend finished her clams and we waited a bit. Finally the server came and asked if we wanted separate checks. He was unaware that the salad was taken away ten minutes before uneaten. No manager came. There was a 3.5 percent charge for credit cards. Overall a dismal experience. The bread was good though, hot and fresh. Will never return. They charge prices that can be found in bright, upscale newer restaurants but neither the food, the atmosphere or the service is on par with cleaner, newer, establishments who value the customer experience. read more

We had my daughters wedding rehearsal dinner here this evening. We were quickly shown to our seats by the staff and the tables were set up beautifully. We were asked quickly what we would like to drink and while we waited for our drinks fresh bread was brought out to us. It was tasty, crunchy crust and soft inside. We were brought a small bowl of some kind of Italian soup, it was very good, I forgot to ask what it was. The soup was followed by a small salad. I chose the crab cakes for my dinner. They were the best crab cakes I've had in a long time! The staff was outstanding and the dining are was clean. read more

A place that has stood the test of time for a reason. The food was wonderful. the service was excellent. The restaurant itself was dated, but I mean it's been there since like 1940ish. If it's not broke don't fix it. They do an upcharge if you are taking food to-go. This feels like something they have done for years. I just would have liked to have seen it be a little more 'covid' comfortable indoors. This place is smaller than it looks especially on a Friday night. My dining experience was before the restrictions were lifted, but you could tell what was going on behind closed door was their business having the right to do as they please. Will I come back? In short yes. They are a local mainstay, give them a try and I hope your experience is a good one no matter what. read more

The hostess working last night turned down our table of 5 and said they didn't have a table for at least an hour(on a TUESDAY night without even looking at her book). My husband is a restaurant manager and I have worked in the restaurant industry for many years as a server/bartender and there were plenty of tables available. It was clear as day that we were turned down simply because we had 3 young children with us. My children are well behaved and we tip very well but that's besides the point. If you don't have someone at least 50+ with you and absolutely no children when trying to eat here, don't even bother. The ambiance was like an old church or retirement home but I'm not usually petty about that type of thing. Today I am though because of the way we were treated. You lost potential regulars because of your hostess. From reading previous reviews, I'm sure you're okay with that anyway. Hope this helps a family like ours avoid a trip!! We ended up down the street at Sopranos and had a beautiful night. I will add that I can't rate the food since we didn't get to try it but it's still a 1/5 for me. read more

Oh my - words fail me. I think the piano and the player you encounter when you first enter should set your expectations for the evening appropriately low. The piano was ready for the wood pile 20 years ago - and the piano player / I'll be kind and keep my mouth shut - but he hasn't used a metronome since before I was born in 1963! Our waiter called our food vittles - yep, vittles. He threw plates and cups on our table like a clown at the circus and his behavior the entire meal was no less bizarre. The rotund waitress serving the table beside us called the 70 year old female customer Gurllll! Our waiter described the cooking prep of fish "throw it into the oven!" The dining room reminded me of what I expect to see at the retirement home / old and slow - the guests and the staff. The food portions were huge - each plate enough to feed 3 people and the food was barely okay. There is a nice bar area that is separate from the main dining area. We went on a Friday evening and enjoyed the live piano music. Best jumbo lump crab cake ever!! Huge, no fillers, just beautiful crab with a nice sear on a lobster sauce. Mom and I enjoy going late afternoon and have a leisurely lunch/dinner. The lunch combo is plenty of food. The bread with olive oil and herbs is very delicious. The apple strudel is homemade and full of fresh apples. I honestly can't think of anything bad to say about this place. Came here for dinner for the first time tonight and ordered the " Maryland crab cake " and it was amazing. The staff was very friendly from the moment I walked in the door. And unlike most restaurants I've been to where you're basically assigned one waitress and everybody else ignores you besides that one waitress. Here every waitress that walked by the table was either refilling my drink making sure things were Perfect and where grabbing empty plates. Honestly I almost felt like I was a special guest or something as silly as that sounds. Everyone seemed to have a smile and no one was walking around like they hate there job and was just waiting for a daily 9 to 5 to be done and over with. I know this review may seem repetitive but I was just that happy with how I was treated and honestly I don't even expect respectable service much anymore because in this day and age it's hard to find. The crab cakes tasted fresh and delicious along with the salad and bread. There was a gentlemen even playing the piano. He was very good and it was relaxing. I was recently taken out to a restaurant in Newtown Square that I didn't even know existed but have probably passed by several times. Well now I know it exists because I had a totally tasty and enjoyable meal there. I'm talking about Charlotte's. Charlotte's is what I would call an old-school restaurant. It is especially known for its crab dishes including an all-you-can-eat crabfest on Tuesday nights. But the large menu has many other delectable treats as well. When we walked in, right away I was struck by the Austrian crystal on display. My friends knew it was there but didn't tell me beforehand so I could be surprised. We then sat down to a multi-course feast. The entire meal began with a bread course served with both olive oil and butter .... your choice. My appetizer selection was Philly Snapper Soup. Of course it came with sherry. This soup is so flavorful, I could eat several bowls of it. Friends tried a mushroom bisque which also passed muster. A healthy salad with amazing house-made blue cheese dressing came next. The dressing was full of blue cheese chunks and when the waitress saw how much I liked it, she gave me a little dressing to take home with me. For my main course I ordered the now-in-season soft-shell crab on toast points with cole slaw and French fries. Again everything was fine but I was getting pretty full by this point so I knew I would be availing myself of a doggy bag. The other entrees of chicken piccata and rib-eye steak were also large and well-liked. My friends ordered key lime pie for dessert which I tasted - perfect! Our waitress was great .... personable and efficient! She easily handled any requests and made sure the water and wine glasses were filled. Of course I would go back to Charlotte's again. I went for lunch last month with about 10 people in my family and we were taken care of from start to finish. I had the clam chowder and a crab cake which came with French fries. My family had our Easter dinner here. We were a party of 6, and we all left happy. My crab cakes were very well made. They had very little filler, loaded with lump crab, and fried to a perfect crisp. Though I will say they could have used a little seasoning which keeps them from being like a true Maryland style. One good thing is that they took pride in the side dishes. Even my grandmother who I'm told isn't a fan of green beans enjoyed hers. So many places overcook them and kill them. These were perfect. I wasn't overwhelmed but I was happy. read more

This is a followup to an earlier review. I had stated that I had to send a lobster tail back as it was cooked to the point of burned rubber. I did follow up with a manager the next day. I wasted my time. I did NOT want to complain more BUT TO EXPLAIN. I do not send a lobster tail back mindlessly. I was told something that plainly showed the manager did not want to bother with me and was clearly not understanding what I was saying. In was told that the next time I came in that my order would be cooked to my specifications!!! This was totally not being listened to. I was not trying to ask for a ridiculous request as in only cooked 60 degrees, no more. I was EXPLAINING what the problem was. I still can't get past how I was treated as the problem.
