We had such a great time at Charleston Distilling! The staff were so friendly and informative. The patio was so nice and relaxing. The espresso martini and flight were both excellent. Definitely will come back to do the tour on Saturdays and try more craft cocktails! Also to try their food which looked delicious.
10,000-square-foot is the home of Charleston's newest distillery. They are a small batch distillery that implies a number of barrels that are mixed together to create a desired taste. Tasting flights and full cocktails are available. What a cool space this is for events such as music or business socials. The interior is electric with indoor and outdoor seating. Have a seat in the daytime on the back patio with a water view or in the evening by a firepit and enjoy a great cocktail from their premium pours. Learning can be fun if you take a tour of their stills and processes and sampling of their two vodkas, two gins, and four whiskeys. Take a gander at their 45-foot-high still. Make sure you take home your own bottle for special times with friends.
We had a great meal at Charleston Distilling- outside on one of the first evenings of the fall where there was a nip in the air. Lucky for us they had recently purchased and installed new heat lamps- and one of the wait staff knew how to turn them on (it was weirdly complicated). They have what looks like a permanent sushi food truck parked outside and we had drinks from the (indoor) bar brought out to us- including a deliciously concocted non alcoholic drink! We will definitely be back!
I went to High Wire Distillery right before I came here so I suppose I'm comparing the two. High Wire was small, personable and had a small-town charm feeling. Charleston Distilling felt like it was definitely meant for tourists and bridesmaid groups wearing blingy sashes that scream for attention. It was not for me. The good: It was cheap. For less than $20 you can get the tour with several samples of their liquor and a cocktail at the end. The bad: It was extremely rushed. The tour group was about 20 or so people and lasted less than 10 mins I feel like. The guy who gave the tour was knowledgeable but talked way too fast. He also ended up being the bartender. None of the liquors stood out for me enough to buy. There was no magical connection with any particular whiskey like I had at High Wire. And then the cocktail at the end...bleh! All of the cocktails had a weird unnatural color to them. Hot pink, lime green, bright orange, or blue. It wasn't a serious cocktail. I'm talking cruise-level cocktails that were not balanced at all. I tried to order the most natural sounding drink which came with an orange or something. It tasted straight up like an Emergen-C. My friend tried it and agreed. Her whiskey mixed drink was equally bad and she was unable to finish it. It's going to be a no for me, dawg.
Long time listener, first time caller. During my second trip to Charleston I thought it was time to pay respects to Charleston Distilling Co. on King Street. I wanted to love this place, it just didn't turn out that way. I've toured dozens of distilleries around the country, and the only word I can come up with to describe my experience is: transactional. Money, money, money. Pay for the tour, pay for the tasting, pay for the cocktails. Look I get it, you're in the heart of downtown. It's tourist central. People will pay. In my humble opinion, the tour was kind of a rip off. Why? Because I didn't learn anything about Charleston Distilling Co. All the knowledge that was presented to us was something you'd read in a Distilling 101 pamphlet. I don't know what separates them from the competition, how the company was started, or what they have planned for the future. Our tour guide was one of the distillers, which amped me up. But by no means should he be leading tours. He ran through it so quickly that I felt nervous to ask questions (I still did). We all felt like we were a burden to him. Like c'mon man, we paid you to be here! After 15 minutes the tour was done and we were led back to the bar for the tasting. At least, they redeemed themselves here, because the product is surprisingly great. Barrel Aged Gin, Pepper Vodka, and the Ginger Liqueur were all awesome. The tour guide ran us through the six samples and at the same time made cocktails for guests who paid for those prior. I think it'd make more sense to go through the tasting first before serving cocktails. Or at the very least, have a second set of hands behind the bar. Pouring samples, making cocktails, and explaining the product to 25 people is a lot of work. Make your lives easier, so the customer experience doesn't suffer. All of this took 40 minutes. I really wanted to buy some product for the road, but since I paid for the tour and the tasting for other family members I didn't feel like they earned an additional purchase. To reiterate, product is really good. The tour and the tasting? I'd skip it and spend your money elsewhere. You can find their product at many bars and restaurants throughout Charleston. Which again, was something not mentioned on the tour, rather something I learned on my own. This could've been a two-star, but the product alone doesn't warrant it.
What a fun afternoon. We had a scheduled appt. for the tour (a must, via the website) and after a fun tour of the small site we belly up to the bar to taste everything. This part was hard for me, as the driver, and the alcohol is strong. The fun part was the cocktails afterwards. Their Tolerance Whiskey Liqueur is delicious and would be great addition to anyone's bar. It would also make a nice holiday/hostess gift for that special friend on your list. Note: while this spot on King is gorgeous, they are in the process of moving to a larger place on Johns Island. Looking forward to visiting them there.
I really had fun hanging out at this cool new place on Johns Island! We started out with a flight to try all the spirits and I enjoyed them all. The gin and bourbon were my favorites! I then had a hand crafted cocktail and the old fashioned was beautifully made. The whole building is impressive with soaring ceilings, glimmering copper and steel distilling kettles and rustic wooden tables and chairs. We sat outside around a roaring fire, watching the moon rise over the pond. It's truly a lovely and peaceful setting to sip a handcrafted cocktail.
Charleston Distilling Co. on Meeks Farm Road on Johns Island is a great place to go for drinks in a cool atmosphere. I really like the location and all of the space to be able to enjoy everything. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating to make sure that you have everything that you need.
Charleston Distilling is always a must visit for me and my hubby when we are visiting the area. My husband always needs to buy a bottle of their gin. He absolutely loves it. On one of our visits we made it just before 7pm - which is the cutoff time to buy bottles of alcohol. He would have been so upset if he didn't get a bottle. The space is beautiful. Nice and big with a bar, a ton of high top tables and shared tables. They also have outdoor seating. The bartenders are extremely nice and share their drink expertise with you. There are always fun drinks to try. I always get a different drink when I am there. Doesn't matter the type of alcohol to me because all of the drinks are perfect. We are big fans of the Purple Rain and Blueberry Mojito. We also appreciate the shared games they have. It keeps our kiddos entertained while we enjoy an expertly crafted drink. read more
This place was recommended by my husband's coworker so we decided to deal with the traffic to drive here. Parking lot is shared with another business. Building is gorgeous and well kept. Service behind the bar was super friendly. Bartender gave us his recommendations. I had a sample of their strawberry reaper vodka and it was delicious. As I am from out of town, I did not buy a bottle. My husband and I split the rainbow sherbet sour and it tasted just like that. For food, I tried their beef appetizer that was pretty tasty. I also had their seasonal tart which at time of visit was peanut butter chocolate. Give them a try. Check their hours for current specials and offerings. read more

Love their spicy Carolina Reaper Vodka! The distillery space is really cool to see and they have a fire pit for cooler evenings. The bar tender in the tasting room is knowledgeable on all the products and processes in production. read more

Terrible experience. We came here on a Friday evening, hours before closing. There were ZERO guests here--that should have been a sign. Bar service was poor. Paid $15 for a shot-sized margarita of terrible tequila and stale bottled lime juice. It wasn't even full to the top of the tiny little glass. We won't be back. read more

Tours of urban distilleries are rarely nicer than this. $20 gets you a breezy but informative tour plus tastings of vodka, gin, whiskey, and bourbon plus a complimentary cocktail. You must take a tour (offered each hour starting at 11am until 6pm daily except on Sunday and Wednesday) to order drinks but once in, you can take a seat at the bar and order additional cocktails. For legal reasons linked to their educational spirits license, you can decide either for two cocktails after the 30 minute tour of the distillery's immaculate facilities, or you can sample small portions of each spirit in tiny plastic cups, then move on to a well made mixed drink after that. But choose wisely! I recommend the Old Fashioned. If you crave another drink from the enticing menu, you have to wait for another day. Or find some new friends fast who don't mind sharing. The spirits are made from South Carolina grains and aged in a rickhouse outside of the city on John's Island for up to four years. Despite the range, it is a small family owned operation where friends come to help at bottling time and everything is done in house with a quintessential Southern smile. Hard to find fault with any of that! read more
Booked a tour ($5 each online) for me and my guy on our trip to Charleston. I've gone wine tasting before, but I'm a stranger to distilling and how spirits are made. The tour was pretty informative. My favorite part was when we got to go to the back and saw where they hand bottle everything. Pretty amazing! The tour no longer includes free tastings, but for a minimal add on fee ($5), you can try a sample of their suite of drinks (vodka, bourbon etc). Just an fyi, the doorknob/lock to their cool barrel restroom can be a little finicky. I popped in real quick before the tour but then I couldn't figure out how to unlock myself out!! I straight up thought I would be stuck in there forever and miss the tour. Luckily I kept fiddling with the doorknob and it let me out. Phew! Overall, a neat experience if you're interested in spirits and have extra time before dinner! read more

This place was awesome!! Beautiful on the inside, FANTASTIC drink menu, & excellent service. You do have to take the tour no matter what unless you don't want to taste anything, but it only lasts ~20 minutes (unless ya got a yapper in your group like we did *eye roll*. Jim, enough.) The tour guide will probably be one of the owners and if it is- it's a fun, informative tour that ends with great cocktails and tastings. The old fashioned is probably one of the best you'll find in town and if you bring one of those friends along that like super sweet and/or weird cocktails, they have something for them too! The space is big, open, and gorgeous and the alcohol is top notch. Tours are every hour on the hour I think. Parking on a side street and walking is your best bet! This is a quick, must see stop if you are in downtown Charleston!! I'll definitely be back! See pictures for pricing information and all the alcohol they sell! read more
Educational tour, great staff, excellent drinks, need I say more? On a rainy day we visited Charleston Distilling Co for a tour and loved the whole experience. We bought tickets online for $5 each but when we arrived we were able to "upgrade" our tour to a tasting as well as get a signature cocktail for additional fee. Well worth the fee! Cocktail menu is fun and creative and drinks were tasty. Tolerance (liqueur made from bark and root) was very tasty. I definitely recommend a stop at Charleston Distilling company. read more

If you are in Charleston, I recommend supporting this local distilling company. We went in and took a tour, learning how the liquor is made. I enjoyed it thoroughly and learned a lot. It is quite the process! We then did tastings! Since the process of making liquor can take years, they only had a few things. (I *will* be back in 2 years to taste the bourbon!!) First: We had the vodka. Smoothest vodka ever! It was absolutely delicious. I will be purchasing a bottle for cocktails to make at home. Second: The gin. I am not much of a gin drinker, but my husband said it was fantastic. Third: Whiskey. Oh... this. What can I say. New favorite drink. The flavor... was out of this world. It was a bit thicker, but oh so delicious. I plan to purchase a few bottles (when they become available- soon!) to use for cooking. I plan to use it as syrup in french toast casserole as well as bring a few bottles home for Thanksgiving. It is the perfect "fall" drink. read more

Distillery that specializes in bourbon, vodka, tequila and gin. The staff is very knowledge and friendly. There is seating outside and tables inside besides the bar. Behind the bar are large windows that display the distillery. There is a sushi food truck that offers rolls and poke. VERY DOG FRIENDLY. Your fido is allowed inside and outside. They also have small pups that roam and lay on beds. Highly recommend if you would like to get out of the historic downtown area. read more

Cool tour, and awesome price! The bartender was friendly and the tour guide was knowledgeable and good at explaining the process and answering our questions. We were the last call for tours of the evening and was really nice to learn a few things about spirits and Charleston. i really enjoyed learning about what i consume and its history, &i didn't know bourbon was america's spirit! thanks to this place i answered a mixology tour question right! You can buy any of their spirits but make sure its before 7pm. Also, after the tour you can do a flight of spirits or a drink. Being fond on whiskey I opted for their smoked maple old fashion and it was amazingggggg!!! They also make a spicy spirit using the carolina reaper pepper and trying it i could feel the heat in my throat creeping up. FYI: you pay to experience the tour but if you want a flight or a drink its separate, pay at the end. Oh.... and there's fresh popcorn they pop for you while you enjoy the tasting. Def recommend coming here to learn a bit about spirits and have a good (strong ) drink! read more

My friends and I came here during our first day in Charleston and loved our experience. We booked a tour and were the only group that signed up for the time slot so we had our own private experience. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and let us take our time to ask questions and view the distilling process. Most of all, our tour guide was extremely patient with our picture taking. After the tour, you are escorted to the bar where you are allowed to be served about 3oz of alcohol. Charleston Distilling Co gives you a few options to taste where you can purchase a flight, a flight and a cocktail or 2 cocktails for $17. Since I don't love drinking straight alcohol I opted for the 2 cocktail option and wasn't regretful. My cocktails were quite different and very delicious. Being a vodka drinker I chosen the Taken For Pomegranate cocktail. My first sip or 2 I thought the cocktail was sweet but it evened out as I started to take more sips. I ended up loving it and thought the use of Almond milk was pretty cool. My second cocktail was the Flora Dora which tasted similar to a Moscow mule with hints of lime and ginger beer. The coloring of the cocktails were vibrant and very nicely presented. Our tour guide / bartender was excellent. He was super friendly and chatted with us the entire time providing us with good places to go during our visit as well as recommendations on what to order. He basically validated all of the places we had on our list making us feel confident in our choices since they were approved by a local. Also, one of the workers has 2 dogs that hang out in the front of the distillery. Being a pup lover I absolutely loved petting the dogs and I think they added to the already awesome atmosphere. read more
