Bar George is one of my favorite places on James Island. They have the best house dirty martini in Charleston and their Peruvian chicken is to die for (they can run out of chicken late into the evening). I also highly recommend their hot dogs, which I know sounds crazy but trust me. The girls and I stop here on a fairly regular basis and the service is always enjoyable. The service here is unmatched. The bar tenders are all super friendly, and they will make you just about any drink you can imagine. Big fan of their espresso martini (yes they use real espresso). Their shrimp dip is a cold dip, but it's delicious and the bread it's served with is the most crisp and buttery compliment you've ever had. I tried the slaw dog, the mummy dog and the Greek dog. Bar George is my girlfriend hangout spot! We meet there for dinner and drinks always. The drinks are good but the food is better! We typically start with the sweet potato gratin which is a fantastic light starter then next our personal favorite- the Peruvian chicken. The chicken is cooked to perfection and the sauce is out of this world. It is even better with fresh lime squeezed on top. To finish an excellent meal, we always order a donut. The dulce de leche is perfection..incredibly sweet with a little bit of salt. They are well known for their hot dogs which are pretty good as well but don't come close to the amazing chicken. To drink, I enjoy the cuttin' tails but the only complaint is that there is way too much ice. They constantly have specials of the day- see deviled egg picture below. The service is wonderful. Everyone is helpful and always willing to find something to make it a better experience. One time they created a drink based on what I wanted as nothing on the menu was calling to me. We hit up Bar George on a friend who recommended the Peruvian chicken. We ordered a whole bird for the two of us - we were worried that it would be too much food, but turns out... We also ordered a salad and a couple glasses of wine. The ended up being delicious and awesome! A unique crunchy crusty on the chicken gave way to a fully cooked and flavorful bird inside. We are this part followed by that part, then a nibble here and a slice there, next thing you know most of it is gone! We brought home just enough for a couple of chicken sandwiches for lunch, which went down just as easy as last night's dinner. We also shared their Boston cream donut, which also was a nice surprise as I was skeptical. Very delicious and one was enough for the two of us to share. Service was attentive and friendly, and knowledgeable about their food. Definitely had a bar layout than a restaurant, with several high top tables, a few regular tables, and a low table surrounded by stuff chairs and sofa. I love the chill, casual vibe of this spot. My buddy has worked here for a while, but I never had a chance to visit until now. Of course, I had the Peruvian chicken and it was delicious. The accompaniments are great, and it's almost like a tapas style menu since most items are fairly inexpensive, thus the smaller portions. I also had the kraut dog which was better than I expected. The doughnuts are very obviously fresh made and crafted to order, which is a nice touch. Not hit-you-over-the-head sweet, but flavorful. We were seated at the bar, we were there at around 6pm it's a small place so it seemed busy. The service was good as well as the food. The drinks were definitely the best part of the meal. Okay ignore the fuzzy photos, but I do think the spicy margarita as great as it was, had me feeling a bit fuzzy! Lol. Drinks were incredible! The pina dog did surprise me.. but wow it was packed with some flavor and I was surprised at how much I liked it! My friend enjoyed her donut! Looked good. I mean you can't go wrong with Bar George. Probably the BEST under the radar meal we've had in Charleston. Service A++, Ambiance A, Food A+++. The menu is pretty limited but every dish was beyond excellent. Peruvian chicken - fall off the bone moist and perfectly spiced. Whole fish - great sharing portion and fresh fresh. Oysters - roasted and fresh were crazy good. Tarama Salata - Greek caviar dip with focaccia- unbelievable!!! Dulce De Leche donut - are you kidding me!!!!!!!!!! Nutella and sea salt donut was out of this world. My friend and I came in for a night cap after my birthday dinner on 6/15. We sat down at the bar and were given menus and water but not a word was spoken. 10 minutes past and the 2 bartenders still have not technically greeted us or said a word to us. The same bartender who gave us menus and water was standing in front of us when we asked her if we could place our drink orders. She replied "Oh, he didn't get your drink order? What can I get you." She proceeded to get our drinks, we both got the Painkiller cocktail, and even though they were pricy for the size of the drink (I'd say probably 6oz) they were very tasty. I asked the same female bartender a few questions about the drinks and I have never felt more unwelcome. Her answers were dry and she was just very unfriendly. I almost felt like she hated us and I have no idea why because we were both very nice to her. This was my first time but my friend has been here before and said she was treated the same way as we were on this visit. While we were having our second drink, she was converting with the male patrons (my friend and I were the only female customers) and she was actually laughing and smiling with them. So we then came to the conclusion that she does indeed have a personality, just hates other females. I'll give this place another shot because their food looks delicious. I really hope my updated review is a better one. My advice is to maybe talk to your bartenders on how to make guests feel welcome and not a bother. I work in F&B and this was a really crappy feeling. read more
