We love going to the Woodruff, just wish we lived closer to visit more often. The interior has an L shape bar, a hi-top bar table, and several other tables. We enjoy the friendly service by all but especially at the bar. I appreciate the bartender's skill at making great cocktails, to include my favorite The Last Word. The food menu has many small plates, selected meats and cheeses, creative entrees, and desserts. We recently enjoyed their softshell crab on a bun, which was from their weekly specials. This was my second visit to The Woodruff and it was very mediocre. I ordered the drunken noodles with shrimp, while my boyfriend had the General Tso's chicken. Both portion sizes were average at best. Sadly, the flavors in both dishes were equally disappointing! The drunken noodles were not comparable to a traditional Thai version and lacked the flavor and authenticity I was expecting. The service was fair, but spending $50+ before tip for an otherwise average meal is steep, even for a downtown restaurant. Lovely wine bar and restaurant in the Crown Commons area of Johns Island. In addition to the extensive wine just, they have a several specialty cocktails, including the smokey bourbon, and a well stocked bar. The four of us ordered the Korean fried chicken, fried brussel sprouts, tuna tostada, and the bang bang shrimp. We didn't share, but everyone enjoyed their selections and we all cleaned our small plates. It's a small place that really can't hold that many people, but somehow it's right sized and I've never seen people waiting. I'm glad to have them in the neighborhood. read more

Great spot! Parking is somewhat limited but not too bad to grab a spot. They have several outdoor tables and several options inside (regular, high top and bar). Staff were friendly! So, I discovered this little place on a whim one day. It's tucked in a little corner in the shopping center right off of Maybank Highway, on Johns Island. When you walk in your first impression is a modern bar, not a big place but not super tiny either probably enough room for 30 or 35 people plus a few tables on the patio. They are all full bar and make pretty good cocktails. First time there, we took down a couple bottles of sparkling rosé and a charcuterie and cheese board. Next time, she had the Water Malone cocktail (think watermelon, gin, lemon, &basil) I had. A classic Negroni. Great drinks!! They do have a bigger food menu also, steak sandwiches, fried crab claws, pasta seafood, and lots of other options. I can see the place becoming popular quickly! read more

I've been eagerly awaiting the opening of the Woodruff ever since it was announced that a wine and cheese bar was coming to Johns Island. It actually took me a little longer to get over there than I expected! The location is in the new Live Oak Square shopping center on Johns Island. We went on a Saturday night around 8pm and they were pretty busy but we still managed to grab seats for 6 at the community table after a quick 15 minute wait. They have a large wine list and lots of cheese and charcuterie options. The other offerings are more appetizer / tapas style along with a fun dessert menu. My husband and I opted to split a cheese and charcuterie board which was very fun to pick out our options. Cheeses included both local South Carolina and imported options. The boards are served on super cool wooden serving trays with olives, jam, green apple slices and toasted baguette slices. I love honey on my charcuterie so that may have been the only thing missing :). My husband also ordered the sliders and I ordered a soft cheese on the dessert menu that was served with honey and nuts (a somewhat savory dessert option, perfect for an appetizer as well). I wanted to try to peanut hummus but I'll save that for our next visit. The ambiance was great and the decor is very pretty -- a great setting for a wine and cheese night. With limited seating I'd suggest getting there early or being patient enough to enjoy a glass or two of wine if you have to wait for a table. We will definitely be returning, my only hope is that they expand the menu offerings over time and maybe offer something a bit more substantial as my husband isn't as much of a snacker as I am! read more

The woodruff has a very cool vibe and is different than any other establishment on Johns Island. It feels like a hip trendy wine bar you might find downtown, but tucked in the corner of a Johns Island shopping center. The bartender was great and offered us good recommendations on wine and food. I had such a great time with my friends here and plan to come back to drink wine and have cheese/apps. My friend loved the wine flight. I was a little skeptical about a wine bar having full meals, but I went for it. I thought unique! Now to the reason why I gave them three stars....The pork bun sliders, and the Brussel sprouts were not good. The pork buns where not plated well, and they did not taste well. The spice took away from the taste, and they sat out for a while....so the bread was soggy and the meat was a little cold. The vegetables on the pork bun were not fresh either. The Brussels sprouts had way to much salt, and the aioli on top had no specific taste. I felt like I was eating a salt stick. After getting home, my stomach felt really bad, and started turning. This place is good for wine, and the cute decor. Maybe the wine snacks are good, but the full meal I ordered wasn't good and brought the score way down for the food. I had no idea that this wine bar existed! My friend told me about it so we decided to give it a go. It was REALLY LOUD when we were there, a very large table was there (all women having a grand old time). It is a small quaint place... a bar with maybe 10-12 seats, high tables probably seats 8- 10 & small tables for 2 that can be pushed together for maybe 12-14 & a large booth for 4- 6. They made good use of the space & it is nicely decorated. They offer wines & craft cocktails.. I'm sure some beer as well- but did not notice. They also offer non alcoholic craft sodas. They have small plates, Charcuterie boards, salads & desserts. We only had two items- The beet, pomegranate fennel salad & pickled shrimp with shallots, lemons, capers, wipped feta cheese on ciabatta bread and a couple of glasses of wine. We sat up at the bar. Service was great, we met 1 of the owners who was the Chef, very friendly, came from the Gin Joint dwntwn. Nice place, good food, nice size, nice price. We used to come to The Woodruff somewhat often, but have not been in awhile because we've been stuck in our work from home bubble. We went back tonight and oh my gosh! 10/10! How lucky we are to have this lovely wine and food bar on Johns Island! From the moment you enter the restaurant, you're greeted by friendly staff and chic, cozy decor. It was a nice surprise to recognize one staff member, Tammy, who took excellent care of us. As you'd hope, the wine list is eclectic and very reasonably priced. Tammy helped us make great selections from the red wine section. There are a few local beers as well and you can also order cocktails. We chose three food items from the menu and each was delicious! First the roasted cauliflower with boiled peanut hummus. Very generous serving and lovely presentation on a slate plate. We loved the flavors of this dish. Next, the slow roasted braised beef sliders with pepperoncini jus. It takes time to get delicious flavor like this and dipping the sliders in the jus made them even better! My only issue was there are only three so I had to arm wrestle my husband for the last one. He won... We finished with one order from the cheese list. The ability to build your own board (BYOB) charcuterie here is tremendous! The selection is extensive of cow, goat and sheep cheeses and meats too. We ordered just one cheese - the sheep Mitibleu. It was so rich and tasty and came with generous accompaniments of bread, olives, jam and roasted pecan crumbles. We were too full for dessert, but they do a homemade pop tart here that I can't wait to try. Well done The Woodruff team! read more

So I was really excited that this place was opening. Way to to go Johns Island. However, I found it a bit lacking. Yes it was busy in the beginning of the evening, great job guys, but it was so unbelievably loud and no sound proofing. Our first waiter, we think his name was Cain, couldn't hear, was amazing. However as the night progressed the staff became more rude (its 9:30 on a Friday night). The bar tender Rob especially. Sadly my hopes are dashed.
