First timer - I'm a local resident and have passed by before. Looking for a quiet date night and found it here. The owner is so welcoming and walks you through the self-service wine machines and gives some suggestion (one of which was excellent). We ordered the maple bourbon goat cheese and the Champagne cheddar. Presentation was great with honey, mustard and other sauces. All of which, paired well with the wines. Picture this.. A self pour brewery BUT....with wine. Yes you did read correctly. The process is as follows. You hand Mr. Cla mante (say it w a French accent) your dc or cc. He hands you a wine card that you stick into the pour system in which it charges the flat fee per each pour. There are 3 sizes on each case (3 cases): sample size/ half pour/ full pour. The sample sizes is what I liked the best. That way you can try a lil of everything. The wines. Got a wide variety from dry to sweet reds to dry to sweet whites. They do have tapas and charcuterie boards too but my girlfriend n I just went for the wine. Ambiance: great place to end on for a date night. Hey! Thatz what we did. So it's a pick your adventure place, can get a taste of 2 oz, half, or full glass. You get a card and go at it in any way that excites you. The charcuterie is good with a wide range of meats and cheeses. Plus a few beers for those like me. While the wine is a self-service (cool for the techie) the owner does an amazing job of customer service. It's a one man band but he makes you feel welcome like your in his house, well you are in his restaurant. Highly recommend visiting especially on a nice night and can sit outside. In town for the evening and unsure of what we wanted to eat, we decided to stop in here for a glass of wine. This is a serve yourself and pay by the ounce set up. When you enter you hand over your credit card to start a tab, and then the hostess will show you how the wine dispenser works. This is a great way to try different wines, especially if you're not sure what you like. The atmosphere is dimly lit and very nice, with high tops up front, a bar, and couches for groups towards the back. There are light bites to order with your wine, and we went with charcuterie with smoked duck and "Ewephoria", a sheep gouda, which was very good. Ardoa is the perfect place to start any evening. Upon arrival the staff was so friendly and welcoming and was happy to educate us on how it all worked. After giving the hostess a credit card she gives you a card that allows you access to the self-serve spigots offering a plethora of wine choices and the cost is posted beside every choice so there are no surprises. You can start with a sampling size or choose either a half or full glass of any wine your mood desires. The bar tender was very knowledgeable about the large variety of cheeses and charcuterie available and he was very attentive to our cozy little group relaxed on the comfy sofas. The atmosphere is quaint and comfortable. The presentation was perfect and every choice we made was delicious. There are several wines on tap and the self-serve feature makes it very easy to sample different types of wine without going broke. They also offer a wide variety of beer. From the sip to the glass out of the sealed and temperature controlled dispensers, you really can explore your palate. I couldn't help but treat myself to a meat and cheese board. Then you have 3 different pour sizes. We really enjoy the setup, and it's fun either as an intimate stop for two or with a group of friends. I was not expecting to be charmed by this little wine bar but boy howdy, was I. The wall of wine into which you insert a little card and then pour until your heart's content is just fabulous. But for the foodies, the charcuterie is something else. You choose the cheese and the meat for your platter, no pre-chosen selection, so you get exactly what you want. The Saint Angel cheese was what dreams are made of. And the bread? A hot, crispy loaf of light deliciousness. I hear they fly that bread in from NYC. Who knows but dayum. Get in there. I love everything about this place. Starting with the atmosphere which is a nice blend of what I would traditionally think of in a french wine bar combined with the luxuries of a much more modern/industrial look. The carcuterie and cheese selection is always good and they have a bit of something for everyone. The German style Blue cheese they normally have is always awesome! For the best selection I would honestly ask the owner, he has never steered me wrong in helping me pick out a selection. (If it's your thing I 100% recommend the duck pate!!! The owner recommended it but also gave me the great tip of saving it for last so thst it had time to come to room temperature and allow all the flavors to emerge) The wine selection is normally very good and I have seen a lot of good wines come and go. Its nice that they keep them constantly rotating. I was told that they "only serve wine that they enjpy drinking", this might sound trivial and obvious but if you've ever worked in/managed a bar with a wine cellar you know it's much much easier said than done. I actually believe this is the case here! The only potential downside to the rotating menu is that if you pick a favorite it may not be there when you go back. They very conveniently solve this problem by offering a lot of their wine for retail sale....very clever good sir....very clever!! Every single member of the staff here has at one point or another gone out of their way to help me out going far above and beyond the call of duty. They even recently helped me pull off a very successful, very elaborate proposal plan!! (It worked she said yes!!) In conclusion this place is alright I guess. I love wine sampling so the sampling option is absolutely perfect if you really want to try everything they have to offer. The wines are arranged from white to red and I believe there are about twelve or so to chose from. Pair these with one of their Charcuterie boards or hummus plate and you have got you a perfect evening with friends or significant other. The only negative I have about Ardoa is that I wish they had more information available about the wines they have. You can choose to get a small taste, half glass or full glass. This is great because there are some expensive bottles that I would normally never get to try and was able to enjoy it here. Then we went to the bar and ordered some cheeses and salami I believe it was. When we got our order it was beautifully presented to us and explained what each product was by the owner himself. Once done it automatically dispenses into your glass and you get a display of how much you currently have charged to your card. As for the food, my wife and I enjoyed a simple plate of hummus. Despite the fact that hummus is inherently simple, the hummus at Ardoa was great. A smooth creamy texture finished with a quality olive oil. Lastly the service was great. A knowledgeable staff that was always ready and quick to serve. The Cabernet was wonderful!! - We got a plate of mimolette cheese, prosciutto de Parma, fig jam, honey, Dijon mustard (we weren't fond of this because it was super horseradish-y), pickles and sliced baguette. I could have had five of these plates! What a wonderful surprise. Also, the owner, I suppose, was there waiting on people and bartending. You place your card in the slot of the machine that holds your wine of choice, select the size of your pour, and at the push of a button your glass is filled! It's a really nice way to have a wine tasting and selecting your own! The prices are displayed for each pour, tasting or 1/2 glass or full pour. We had a wonderful time with our group and the atmosphere was cozy and comfortable! The staff was very friendly and helpful. You also can design your own cheese and meat board which is totally awesome! This place allows you to create your own munchies while enjoying a your choice of wine. Wait a hot second! I haven't written anything about Ardoa, yet? How is this possible?!? I love (LOVE) this wine bar!!! First of all, the pour-your-own-at-the-tap-of-a-button concept is genius. The setup allows you to try a number of wines and go back for more at your own pace. (Literally, more. Either another small pour to taste OR larger pours to fill the glass.) The self-serve experience allows you to pour either 1oz, 2.5oz or 5oz at a time. Its a wonderful way to try a bunch of different wines - and they have more than plenty - over 40 rotating bottles to choose from!!! They also have wine by the bottle and champagne available. For food options, cheese, charcuterie, pate and some small bites round out their menu. What is not to love??? Claymont and his wife (the owners) are very knowledgeable of the wines available, provide attentive service and know just the right time to interact without intruding on conversations. The ambiance is sophisticated, romantic and upscale without being pretentious or expensive. Yes, all those tastings and larger pours can add up, BUT they are really nicely priced to begin with and its a wonderful way to try some different wines without breaking the budget. (Or being stuck with a flight of wine that probably costs more and may not be to your liking.) Its a small space with a couple high top tables near the front windows, bar seating for maybe about a dozen people, a lounge area with comfy chairs and sofas in the back, and a couple bistro tables outside on the sidewalk. Turns out it's basically full price for three glasses of wine vs a smaller less expensive sample portion. The meat and cheese plate was laughable. The food that's served is all of high quality and not your everyday bar food. Going from cheese plates to charcuterie and even pate! A treat for every bon-vivant in Charleston.
