Refuses to see sick children My child is assigned to Pumphrey through our HMO. I called to make an appointment for him since he has a fever and a negative Covid test. Apparently, this doctor refuses to see sick children. According to his "policy," he refuses to see children with fevers. WHAT IS THE POINT OF A CHILDREN'S DOCTOR WHO WONT SEE SICK KIDS? Pumphrey was the first doctor we chose when we decided that it was no longer beneficial to drive all the way to OC for doctor visits. For regular check ups he was fine. When my daughter's TK teacher suggested that she might have ADHD we went to Pumphrey for professional diagnosis. We were treated to a 30 minute lecture on how we shouldn't be feeding our daughter animal products and shouldn't be eating them ourselves, a lecture complete with screenshots of burritos he saw in a Netflix documentary the night before. It was so extremely weird and uncomfortable. When that was over he said it was time to choose a medicine for treatment of my daughter's ADHD. He said "this is the Cadillac of ADHD meds, let's see if your insurance covers this one." We put our daughter on the recommended medicine, and it worked. Her teacher was ecstatic about how helpful and attentive my daughter was right away. Ultimately though, we decided that he was just too weird and found a new doctor. Our new doctor informed us that the drug prescribed to my 4yo was the most extreme option possible, with a high risk of stunted growth, and not even approved for children her age. The new doctor refused to continue her prescription and said we needed a pschiatrist if we wanted to continue. Once we found a psychiatrist that sees children (all the way back in OC) we were again told that our daughter had been put on an extreme medication that should have been the last resort, not the first. It's been 2 years on a much more subtle medication and my daughter is doing great now, but after overhearing parents rave about Humphrey at school drop off I just had to write this review. read more

Doctor might be okay, but how they handle business deserves negative stars. This medical office has a dubious front office staff, shady business practices, and bad debt collection/remediation methods. In the unfortunate case that you are not in network, due to a mistake on their behalf, this office will go to extreme measures to get their money, including violating state and federal laws. Currently, there is a complaint against Pumphrey Patch Kidz Medical Office, located at 29798 Haun Rd Suite #304, Sun City, CA 92586, for a violation of the No Surprises Act. Please see below for a copy of the complaint. 'The issue began when a patient went in for immunization. Prior to the appointment, the office staff verified that she was covered by our health insurance provider, AETNA. We even found the facility using our insurance's website for "in network doctors". This verification reassured us that we would be covered for the services received and would not incur any unexpected charges. However, to our shock, we later received a denial letter from our insurance company and a surprise medical bill from the medical office, which amounted to a total of $1,140.00. We appealed the denial decision with our insurance, but they provided documentation to show that they were not in network anymore. In an attempt to resolve the issue, we contacted both AETNA and the medical office, which led to a verbal agreement for a payment plan and a lowered bill in the range of $700 - $850, to be paid in installments. We were even told that if we did not pay we would be sent to collections and then offered a "cash discount." As a result, we paid three installments, each worth $144, totaling $432. Unfortunately, I fell ill and was unable to make further monthly installments. In response, without any prior warning, the medical office sold my debt to a collection agency, Coachella Valley Collection Service, for an amount exceeding the previously agreed upon maximum sum of $850. This action, we believe, is in clear violation of the No Surprises Act. Despite our earnest attempts to honor the financial agreement we had entered into, the office not only reneged on the established payment plan but also escalated the issue by involving a collection agency, thereby negatively impacting our credit rating. In light of the above, we kindly request that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau intervene on our behalf to investigate this issue and provide a resolution. We believe that Pumphrey Patch Kidz Medical Office should be held accountable for its actions, which are against the provisions of the No Surprises Act, and thus unfair to us as consumers. We appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to your prompt response. We would like Pumphrey Patch Kidz to revise the amounts we are being billed for to be equivalent to in network charges as stated in the No Surpries Act, stop sharing patient information with collection agencies, and revise their unfair practices for future consumers. Since we have already paid Pumphreys over $400, this would amount to more than we would spend if we were being covered by AETNA. Therefore the ideal resolution would be to liquidate the debt or have us pay only a minimal amount in accordance to the amount we would pay if we were in network. No Surprises Act states "Starting on January 1, 2022, you generally won't be responsible for balance bills or out-of-network cost-sharing when getting emergency care, non-emergency care from out-of-network providers at certain in-network facilities, or air ambulance services from out-of-network providers. When this happens, instead of you paying for unexpected out-of-network costs, you'll generally only need to pay your normal in-network costs (like coinsurance, copayments, and amounts paid towards deductibles). The health care provider and your health plan are responsible for negotiating the total payment amount." ' read more

I, unfortunately, have to agree with the negative reviews. Dr Pumphrey is AMAZING his front office staff, not so much. I got a hint of their negative attitudes @ my initial, 1st time call and follow-up calls and visits but disregarded thm. Thought, thy were having a bad days but wanted to support local business. It's very unfortunate that to avoid continued stressful & unpleasant interactions with them we had to find a diff. provider. Their attitudes just SUCK! Fortunately we now have AMAZING Dr's, professional staff and gained a lrg network of supports My star key breakdown One Star: Every aspect of the restaurant/business is terrible, I would avoid it at all costs. Two Stars: I didn't have a great experience, but noticed that there could have been mitigating factors (such as the time of day, their being short on staff, etc.) I advise caution. Three Stars: This is a meh. Not great, but not too shabby either. Might be good to visit if it is conveniently nearby, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit it. Four Stars: It isn't perfect, but I'm a big fan of this place. I highly recommend giving a visit if you are in the area and are looking for someplace similar. My daughter saw this doctor almost 3 years ago. He was a good doctor very response to texts and questions. However being a new mom I felt like he dismissed some of my concerns and just attributed to me being a new, worried mom. My daughter's left arm didn't move like her right. He never ordered additional testing for it. Milk also came out of her nose. He did refer us to GI for that but GI missed her diagnosis as well (velopharyngeal insufficiency). She saw this pediatrician 3x as a newborn. I think possibly if we saw him for a longer period, he may have eventually referred us out for testing. Our insurance made us see a different pediatrician when she was between 4-6 months old. She did end up having cerebral palsy and 22q deletion. read more

Dr pumphrey has always been there for our family. Though he doesn't have to- he answers texts promptly- we had a child born at home and had an emergency and it was the middle of the night- Dr pumphrey takes the call. This is the kind of care yoy expect out of those small town hallmark movies yet Dr pumphrey is somehow able to do it for all of his patients. We have a lot of children and they have a lot of needs all the time... he always responds, always cares, always kind... there is no other pediatrician like him and I just hope he's still practicing as my kids age, he's truly so very special and we care so much about him. It's been 9 months of back and forth with this office. I received a letter today from a collection agency with a different amount than the last confirmed payout balance. In case you weren't aware medical bills under 500 can not be reported to crediting agencies. Well their office manager confirmed the amount was under 500 but changed the balance to 725 to report to crediting agencies. This is the dirtiest practice I've ever seen any medical professional do. Do not go here!! Your children's medical files will be sold to collection services it's a blatant violation to HIPPA privacy rights. The front desk doesn't care to properly verify your insurance before you walk into the exam room or even on the phone when scheduling the appointment all so they can stick you with a bill at the end. If they send you a bill do not pay them go online and report them to www.cms.gov you are protected against providers like this under the no surprises act effective date January 1st, 2022. Dr Pumphrey was my boys pediatrician for 5 years, 2013~2018). He is an excellent doctor! He is very knowledgeable and kind. My boys love him! His staff had him contact me immediately after my son had an emergency and had to be rushed to the hospital. Immediately being 20 seconds later! I wish I could give negative stars. Dr. Pumphrey is a great pediatrician, but his office is aweful. His staff are rude and very undereducated. They called me when they ran out of flu shots and said sorry we can't vaccinate your daughter. I asked them where I could take her they had NO RESOURCES. What kind of pediatrician office works this way. I can never get my kids in to be seen when they are sick. I ALWAYS have to go to urgent care. I'm sorry but isn't the point of a MD to treat sick patients? Not just do physicals all day? I called in to get a paper signed... a paper. Dr Pumphrey is amazing! He is very knowledgeable, kind, and patient. He actually spends time with my kids when they have a check up usually around 30-40 minutes. I don't know of any other doctor that takes this much time with patients. He explains to my kids how important eating fruits and veggies are and they really listen and ask me for them throughout the day. I also have a daughter with adhd and he has been nothing but compassionate and helpful. He offers lots of alternative medicine recommendations that work. He has let me vaccinate my kids on my schedule and never been pushy. His office staff is always friendly and great with my kids. Do plan on a 90 minute visit because Dr pumphrey spends his time with you and your kids. He is also available through text if you need anything off hours. They have also been able to get me next day appointments when my kids are sick. The kids always get a lollipop when we leave and he makes sure they get the right color. read more

We looked everywhere and switched between so many of the highest rated pediatricians in the area and finally found Dr. Pumphrey by a referral from my midwife. Dr. Pumphrey is now asking for parents drivers license to ID parents when bringing kids in? My kids have been coming here for several years now and have never been asked to provide this. I asked the office manager to please delete my drivers license from their system as I do not feel comfortable with them having that in their system. I am worried about identity theft not from office staff but from hackers. The office manager said if my kids want to continue coming here they need this information. She would only provide here first name. No customer service, no clear answers. My kids will be going elsewhere. I love the Doctor. He always listens to my concerns, answers my questions & makes my Daughter feel calm & relaxed. As for the front office staff, they are horrible & rude. I've been taking my Daughter there since birth & she will be 5 this year. The front office staff never greets with a hello or so much as a look. My Daughter broke her leg last year & I need a referral for a orthopedics & they told me to do it myself because they were too busy. We have been with this office for eight years. I absolutely love the doctor. Unfortunately they've taken on far too many patients and you spend a lot of time sitting in the waiting room. Just took my 4 year old for her wellness checkup. I was a little apprehensive when I saw some of the reviews but decided to try him out anyways. I loved him, his secretary's and nurses. As far as someone saying there are no toys in the waiting room, it's not toys R us bring a tablet if you must. The waiting time was less then 5 minutes! I also liked that he was all about nutrition and a healthy diet, yes he had us try his vitamins...but so what? If you don't want to buy, don't buy them. He was caring and asked lots of questions, he also made sure to ask if I had any questions. For the amount of files he had (you can see from the waiting area) to the couple of bad reviews, on Yelp I think he is a pretty good Dr. Thank you see you next year Dr! I cannot say enough good about Dr. Pumphrey. He is the most amazing pediatrician you will ever meet. On several occasions we have been on vacation and over a weekend when he has immediately answered all my concerns and even called in prescriptions wherever we happen to be. He is not quick to give my kids medications like some other pediatricians. He actually cares what the cause of the problem is and works on finding the solution rather than just passing out a prescription. We appreciate him more than I can describe. Dr Pumphrey is a good doctor. I'll give him that. My daughter has been a patient of his for about five years. I have referred TONS of people to him over the years. We were long-time patients of Dr Hurwitz and when she retired we went over to Pumphrey. At first, it was great! Then he got new staff and they couldn't be more rude! To put it into perspective, this is my first yelp review EVER. I've never been treated so poorly ANYWHERE that I've felt the need to write a bad review but after dealing with the front office staff at his office, I felt 100% compelled to tell the world about it. Sadly, a doctor is only as good as his staff and I don't see his practice thriving very much longer if he keeps the front office staff that he currently has. not to mention, they overcharged me for an appt (I paid cash) and they never refunded me. I didn't even sweat it till they told me I have a $40 balance with them today and cannot make an appt for my daughter until it's paid. Normally I would just pay it BUT I reminded her about the $40 they overcharged me and never paid me back. she basically called me a liar. after that, she told me the $40 owed was for an appt that we missed. I told her we weren't even living in this state at the time of the appt so there's no way I would have scheduled an appt for then. she basically called me a liar AGAIN. oh and they also told me my daughter needs more immunizations. I showed them the shot record that THEY GAVE ME and she had already gotten the ones they said she needed still. they argued with me for hours off and on over the phone. come to find out, she DID get those shots there and they just didn't write them down in their file. they only wrote it on her yellow sheet. needless to say, I gave her a piece of my mind, hung up and we won't be going back. ever. read more

He has kept us from multiple ER visits as he allows texts after hours when there is a concern, and always offers a solution and eases our worried parent minds! We LOVE that he takes a more natural approach and has helped us to solve many problems with diet alone. He is a gift to our community and his staff is also wonderful. They do their best to get us in last minute and if no appointments are available, the waiting list usually gets us in quickly. I see a lot of comments here about the staff and i have to disagree. They are not going to chit chat with you all day, because they are VERY busy with helping patients get the care/follow up needed.
