David L. For the last 25 years I have owned Vermont Castings woodstoves, the last of which was a Defiant model purchased about 17 years ago from the Stoveshop in Littleton, MA. As I grew older I began to realize I could no longer hand carry three cords of hardwood a year to feed the wood stove so this year I decided to switch to a gas stove using the same propane gas we use for a fireplace in the other end of the house. In August I went back to the Stoveshop and purchased a Hearthstone model mostly on the basis that it put out the most heat available in the same physical configuration as the former wood stove. This was driven by the height of the exhaust pipe on the wood stove. The stoveshop helped me find a gas stove where the coaxial pipe used for inlet air and exhaust to and from the gas stove fit the exact mechanical configuration of my previous wood stove. After the selection of the stove the real problems began. I found out that what I thought would be a simple process of running a gas line through the floor to the new stove is subject to a permitting and inspection process in Massachusetts. Most of the plumbers I had worked with before apparently don't like to put up with the hassle to do a relatively simple hook-up. My normal creosote-cleaning chimney guy was willing to prepare the chimney but it was obvious I would have been his first coaxial chimney customer so I thought an experienced chimney person would be better. In both instances the Stove shop was able to provide me with the names of skilled people to do the necessary work to prepare for the stove to be installed. Now that the new stove is installed and operating properly I can say that the Stoveshop provided an extremely valuable service. In addition to selling me a stove they provided valuable information and expertise in areas with which I was not familiar. I probably could have bought a stove for less money from a supplier like Amazon but I would not have known how to install it even though I have a degree in electrical engineering. I feel that the expertise provided by the Stoveshop was well worth the additional expenditure especially when the safety aspects of gas installation are considered. read more

Very disappoint. Specifically asked if they cleaned the flue when doing annual service on a pellet stove and told "yes". I was told "yes", I now find out they do not! One would think the tech would have said something after coming for 3 years!!! read more

It's very hard to reach them. If you leave message, it will take forever to get back to you. They always say it's their busy season, no matter it's winter or summer. We had the same experience Fredda had, They took about 2 month to make an appointment to finish set up their left over work. They will charge extra fee for finishing their work too. Unbelievable! I gave them a 5 star review last October when I bought my pellet stove. This year, after only one light season and proper cleaning, my stove would not start. I called them twice a month ago. All you get is voicemail and their commitment that it could take two weeks to return your call. I guess after a year in a pandemic they haven't figured out business yet. Well here we are about a month later and I have yet to receive a return call. I called a competitor who is coming out tomorrow. The only downside is this should not be a paid service call but it will e with the competitor. if you are looking for service following the sale, take your business elsewhere. read more

Best wood stove store around - excellent customer service. I have a wood burning stove and was trying to change out some cracked fire bricks the day before thanksgiving. I ended up breaking more bricks and didn't have enough to replace. I drove quickly to Littleton and made it 10 minutes after they closed. I tried my luck and knocked on the door as I needed new bricks to operate my stove (especially over the holiday). A man came to the door, mask on, and asked how he could help? He let me in and sold me the bricks even though they were closed. Huge thank you to this place! read more

Below average experience with these guys. Came in to buy a wood stove, knowing exactly which model we wanted, and was shown a model that was nearly twice as expensive. Wrote it off as their effort to make sure we knew all of our options. I explained that we didn't need the stove installed. When we got the estimate for the stove, it included installation and part charges. This was slightly annoying, but gave me a window into how incredibly high they mark up their parts during the installation of their wood stoves. The charge for the installation itself was reasonable. The charge for parts was outrageous. Keep that in mind if you are looking for someone to install a wood stove for you. When the stove arrived, it was delivered with a scratch and the bricks inside were recklessly strewn about. I called and asked if they would touch up the scratch. They said they would. They never did. In fact, when we later asked them why they didn't, they said to have the guy we hired to install the stove perform the repair. I also ordered a custom surround with them. It was expensive. Was told it would take 2 weeks. It took 4 weeks, so the guy we hired to install the stove couldn't finish the job on time - messing up both of our schedules. They offered to install the custom surround free of charge presumably to make up for the late delivery. Points to them. But the surround was also scratched and they didn't touch it up! Furthermore, the metal of the surround was slightly warped and two sharp edges were sticking out from the fireplace. We asked if they could screw those corners in to make it more safe (we have young kids in the house). They said they didn't do that, but again that we should get the person we hired to install the stove to do it. Here is the way this transaction left me feeling: They could not care less about customer service and will do the minimum for the maximum. Was this a one-off? Maybe. But I'm never doing business with them again. read more

Bought a $10k fireplace from them and the problems began at installation. They sent 2 guys and neither knew what they were doing and seemed perplexed during the install. Of course it didn't work properly and I had to chase them for weeks trying to get them to resolve it. They don't answer the phone in the store, and they don't return calls. It wasn't until I disputed the install charge on my credit card that they finally got back to me to set up a time to come to my home to properly install it. This was more than 6 weeks after the original installation and many calls and emails with very little interest in getting back to me. The new guy did get it working but was complaining that it was so far from his home even though I was assured more than once it would be no problem to service it at my home in RI. I did release the dispute once it was working and they received their money to cover the install charge. Then the next problem arose a number of months later and I had the same experience reaching anyone. When I did, the owner made me go through several steps in proving to him that I had released the dispute. The credit card company provided the documentation showing the money was released to him and he has used this as an excuse not to follow up and fix the fireplace. Trying to get the fireplace repaired has been going on for over 10 weeks. So buyer beware, they are not a professional place to do business with if you have problems and don't have professional follow up, and they don't stand behind their promises. read more

We had the owner of the company come out to look at our fireplace and chimney. He personally saw the chimney inside and out and the depth of our fireplace. First of all, the owner came out to measure for a liner that they "absolutely" said we needed (2 story chimney .... not cheap). The men showed up without the right ladder. So they needed to come back a different day. After the fireplace was installed, we tried to start a fire. Smoke came billowing out of the fireplace and into the entire house. We since tried to and three fires after that. The same thing happened. I called the store. I got a condescending answer stating that he would come out and start a fire for me. Well, he could not get the fire started without the smoke bellowing out into our living room. He came back the next day with a blowtorch to try to heat up our chimney to no avail. They concluded that our chimney was is too tall and we would never be able to start a fire in the house without the smoke coming out into our house. They would not refund us the money, they would not exchange it for something different and now we're stuck with a $5000 paperweight. The owner came out and saw our chimney and determined that this would work before the install. Horrible , horrible company. Horrible customer service. Do not use them. read more

Had a technician out to the house 3 times after they initially repaired the propane stove. Each time was a few months apart because the stove would not turn on. First they replaced the switch, second they replaced the thermostat. The third time, they said all the wiring (that they did) was all wrong, and so they installed a remote. Now, that is broken. I've called 4 times over 4 weeks about it. Each time being told someone would call me back to walk through syncing the remote. This time the owner, Barry, hung up on me, and would not take my calls because he was "too busy". Apparently, they can't repair propane stoves, and it's not worth their while to do so. So, I would discourage buying from them as they do not service what they sell, and clearly have very poor customer service. read more

We purchased a wood pellet stove from Woodstove Fireplace in Littleton three years ago and have it serviced annually. The guys generally do a good job but the company overcharges. It subcontracts out stove cleaning and chimney sweeping to other companies and then charges more than those companies would have directly. Also, Woodstove had two separate companies come to do our pellet stove for $350 and then our small wood stove in a bedroom for $250 - but many companies would do both in one visit. We will go straight to the smaller companies next year and likely save hundreds. read more

Nightmare experience with this shop. Paid almost $5000 for a gas fireplace insert including installation. At the appointment almost 2 months later, the installers came but did not set the gas fireplace up safely/correctly (my plumber told them) and then left to go to another job, leaving mine unfinished. Barry ran my credit card through for the final (third) payment, after failure 1st visit, without my permission when the fireplace was not safe or useable. The second time the installers came, they did not call or page my plumber as had agreed upon. The installers took a sledgehammer to the top of the chimney damaging the crown and the top few rows of bricks of the chimney. Instead of fixing the liner which needed to be near the top of the chimney, they shortened the chimney! Put a top on that was clearly used as it was dented and rusty, not new. Barry was rude and did not return my calls or emails. Barry left the installation with damage and unfinished. I had to hire a professional mason for thousands of dollars to repair the damage and finish the installation. Worst home improvement experience in 35 years I have owned my house. read more

I had called them about an issue with my gas fireplace - explained the problem and they could not diagnose over the phone (though I was specific). The technician came out here and saw that what I was experiencing was not a problem and we ran the fireplace in 2 minutes. Essentially there is a red-blinking light that should stop after 20 seconds - it remained on and I was hesitant to turn the pilot to the On position. I asked them on the phone about this and they recommended the technician come out here - turns out it was not a problem and as mentioned we started the fireplace in 2 minutes. Very bad experience with this company. Barry came to my house to measure for installation of a wood burning insert. I paid the $75.00 for the house visit with my credit card at that time I asked do you take all major credit. The lady said yes. Barry came to my house sent me an estimate for chimney repair and installation on my insert. I agreed to have it done and called to pay for it at that time I was told no AMEX. I said well I just moved money around so I could have the $7.000 for chimney repair and fireplace insert they said sorry nothing we can do, I asked for Barry to call me. Two days later no call back. I called spoke to Pat said Barry has not returned my call and he will will tell you same thing we will not take AMEX. Then Barry called. I asked him if there's anything he can do with taking Amex as I was never told you did not take that form of payment his response was no we do not and that's on you. Then I asked does the unit need a power supply? Barry informed if you want it so work properly yes. Then I notice he measured my back height of my fireplace and his measurement was 10 inches. 10 inches? I then said my only form of payment is Amex so I can not to do with you would you refund the $75.00 for the miscommunication and I'll go elsewhere. He said now ya again your not getting your money back. With that attitude why would anyone want to do business with him. I was prepared to pay him $6,000 for this and my electrical would be on me another 1,000 for electrician. He states in his response on other sirens lures all lies all lies. It's not the money Barry it's principal you don't treat people that way. You also mention a small business does not take Amex $6,000 for one serve I don't think that's a small purchase. I own a small business and upfront with everything so the consumer can plan. Sorry Barry we aren't all rich like yourself , I need to plan when I spend 6,000 dollars and then more for wiring. Great place to fill up your propane tank! Only down size is there hours of opperations. I wished that they stayed opened a little longer.

I called for a part for my pellet stove which I bought from them two years ago and the woman there said they showed they had six in stock but wanted to check first so she put me on hold. She came back and said she couldn't find them but would have a tech check when he came in and call me back. Hours went by so I called again 4 hours later and got their office while they were open and it said everyone was busy and leave a message and they would return my call so I did. No call back. So I went without heat all night. I went online and ordered the part from another dealer and had it shipped over night. The Wood Stove shop called the next day at 10 AM to tell me they had one and I explained no one called and she said she leaves at 3 PM. I asked if anyone else picks up after she leaves or returns calls and she says no if they are busy. They are open until 6 PM. Don't bother with this place you will be so disappointed. read more

I was shopping for an insert to replace my aging fireplace. I was told I needed to have my fireplace inspected 1st. That sounded reasonable. Someone came to my house for 3 minutes with a flashlight and charged $100. the inspector never left my living room. never inspected the chimney. Never went on the roof. Never looked down inside the flu. subsequently I was told I needed a "thorough cleaning" to remove glaze and soot. the cost for that was $500.the technician spent 35 minutes or less at my home. Again never left the living room. Never went on the roof. Removed minimal debris from my fire box with a brush and a vacuum. Again there was no attention to the flew itself or the chimney. I have a new company now. I have been told that the cleaning was not adequate and I have had to repeat the cleaning and inspection. I complained to fireplace shop and 10 days later still waiting for a response? If you like sloppy expensive work this is the company for you!!! read more

Seems to be a good place, friendly people. My issue is with what I feel was a high cost. Technician came out to do a check-over of our woodstove ... we really like the technician, personally, great fellow. He dusted some ash off the catalytic converter, and let us know that the incorrect roping / gasket size was on the doors of the woodstove. I was the last person to replace the roping, so that was my fault. He said he could some back out and re-do the roping, which means 2 trips, higher cost. Just my way of thinking, but I would have come out with some basic supplies like roping and some minor replacement parts so minor repairs could be made instead of making a second trip to cause the price to go up. The technician did a great job, put fresh roping on, tightened the doors up, however the cost of $265 was quite steep, given that I've done the roping (yes, wrong size) myself in the past, and vacuum the stove and clean the chimney annually. So, bottom line is I would get them to tell you the estimated cost prior to them coming out ($75 fee first trip out, then second trip, add on more) so you can decide if the two-trips-cost is worth it. If I had known from the start the bill would be $265 for replacing the roping, I would not have done it. Do like the technician, good job, glad the work is done and I learned to use a different size roping. read more

Very poor attention to detail in a new, Hearthstone installation. Messy, stovepipe misconfigured, and worst of all, a gas leak within the stove itself. A lack of responsible professionalism by new owner, Barry, and his subcontractor was shown in recognizing and correcting the problems. read more

Called these guys last spring to ask if they've ever cleaned my particular model of pellet stove and they assured me they'd had. A young guy came over and stared at our stove for a while and made some comment that it must be like cleaning the others he'd cleaned. It only took him 25 minutes to clean it, and he didn't disassemble it as the other cleaners I've always used had. Charge was $200. The other service people I've used in the past (who were unavailable this year) always spent 60-90 minutes taking it apart (million pieces) while cleaning it. I go to start it up this fall, and the motor is making a grinding sound along with a bad burning electrical smell. I'm surely going to have to pay another $200+ to get it diagnosed and repaired now by different service people. It was working fine when I shut it down last spring, can't imagine anything could've happened to it while it was just sitting all summer. read more

I own a Hearthstone Sterling that needed service so I contacted the Store ( Woodstove, Fireplace & Patio, Littleton,Ma.) where I purchased it. I made a service appointment, service guy Rob came out was great (Wednesday)! Told me they would order the repair part. That's when the train went off the track. Called the new owner on Friday to check on status of part order, he never called back. Dropped in at the store Saturday to check, opps they had not ordered the part yet. Ordered it while I waited, I paid for it then. Barry told me it would be in Wednesday. Called him Wednesday, well the part isn't in I'll check and call you back. Two hours later can't find out about status none at Hearthstone answers. I told him I was disappointed in the delay. His response was I should have called sooner, after all this a busy time of year. I told him I was still disappointed to which he said sorry about that and hung up. Second Contact; Paul from Woodstove,Fireplace and patio called and left a message that the part is in. I called back and got the owner (Barry) told him that Paul had left a message the part is in. His reply was if he said so then it is in, to which I replied well I need it installed. He put me on hold and Paul came on after a couple minutes. Paul said can't get out there until next week. So from the 18th of September until October 10th my 88 year old mother's apartment has no heat. Third Contact; The saga continues with Woodstove, Fireplace & Patio, Littleton, Ma. The service guy arrived at the house and somehow thought I had the part, said they NEVER GOT THE PART. He made a call to someone said they might be able to use a part off another stove but needed to go back to the shop. He returned with a part from somewhere, (it does not look like the original part) installed it, charged another $100 and left. The stove hi-low control now works and I have a nice BLUE FLAME at all settings. Note is should be yellow/orange like a fireplace! read more

Do not shop at Woodstove Fireplace. I usually don't write reviews, but my experience here was not good. It was for a fireplace repair and months later, I'm out money without a working fireplace.
