Shoutout to Char-Grill for being the only place standing with SWEET tea, service, quality food & shakes.

The only tomato in my BLT, do better

Used to be a quick and great place to go for a quick lunch now you wait 20 minutes to to get your order in at lunch and wait another 10 minutes to get your food. Please do better. Food and service has really gone down hill.

Back side drive thru

Great little place off of 70 Behind KS Bank and Beside Bank Of America and the car wash. My mistake was I ordered a #1 and finding out that you should read the small print or you end up with a half pound hamburger ! Overall the service was great, the drive thru was quick and everything I ordered was correct. A much better fast food experience compared to the major chains. Will be back again when I'm running on a tight schedule and need a quick bite, however a junior will do just find the next time, Burp!!!

Chicken sandwich

Always hot food and generally fast service. Place looked very clean tonight. They have a tendency to overcook into the grill items. Chicken is on the dryer side almost every time. Tonight same as well as the hamburger. Burger was completely black around the edges and very dry. So dry that had to go back to get it made again. They were very accommodating and got the replacement out quickly. Burgers are their main item and you'd expect they would be good at it.

Burgers are the size of hockey pucks and if you ask for onions, you'll get 6 little square pieces!

Food good. Service adequate. Grossly overpriced- $10 for cheeseburger, fries and drink is too much. Especially fast food...

I've been to this place over a dozen times over the years. Sometimes just for drinks and other…read moretimes for hot dogs and drinks. Brought many family members here when they are in town. My latest experience (a few months ago) will be my last. The service here just ruins the experience. We've had issues here with poor service many times but I've always let it slide. Workers are consistently not friendly and just seem disinterested in their customers and their jobs. Went in with my 2 sons for hot dogs and beers like I've done many times before. We fill out our hot dog orders and stand at the bar a good 10 minutes as the 2 people behind the bar completely ignore us. They were not super busy- just a few bar patrons and two couples sitting at a table drinking. No one came to take our hot dog tickets, or drink order. The one bartender (female) clocked out and bolted after 5-6 minutes. The other bartender (male) never came to our end of the bar like we were invisible. They both saw us, they both knew we had been standing there for quite a while, they just didn't care. I think neither of them wanted to cook hot dogs. We decided to just leave and go elsewhere. I didn't make the decision to leave lightly. I waited longer than I should have and even asked my youngest son what his thoughts were (he is as calm, patient, and level-headed as they come so I deferred to him). He said we should leave since they obviously didn't need our business. Why can't this place just have a dedicated person to cook and do odds and ends and not share the cooking duty with the bartender who often times has no interest in doing so? Such a bummer since this is a cool place with good vibes but they hire the worst employees. Here's a novel idea for the owner- offer just a little better pay to attract some better workers and I'll bet that would increase your business and more than offset the increased costs. But Nope! Owners just never get it and insist on cutting costs at the expense of losing customers due to bad experiences. Done with this place.

Very disappointed- after getting charged $35 for One beer and 2 hotdogs. I certainly didn't leave…read more that kind of outrageous tip and reached out to Cardinal to correct and they have refused as of today. 8/21/25 I've been to this and several of their other locations and won't be back. Watch your credit card for them and fraudulent charges.

I visited the Roast Grill in January after years of looking down on the building from my former…read moreGannett Fleming office at One Glenwood and wondering what was inside this little Raleigh institution. The Roast Grill feels less like a restaurant and more like a preserved piece of mid-20th-century Americana hidden in plain sight along West Street. The narrow counter, wood-paneled walls, neon beer signs, Coca-Cola memorabilia, handwritten notices, old photographs, Hurricanes tributes, and decades of accumulated objects create an atmosphere that simply cannot be manufactured today. The place reminded me a little of Chicago's famous Billy Goat Tavern--especially the feeling of discovering something authentic tucked beneath an increasingly overbuilt urban streetscape. I ordered two hot dogs all the way with mustard, onions, chili, and slaw--absolutely NO ketchup, of course--along with a Coke in a glass bottle. The chili is legendary and reportedly takes up to three days to prepare. Whether that is folklore or fact, it certainly gives the hot dogs a flavor unlike almost anywhere else in Raleigh. One of my favorite details was the mounted goat wearing a red hat beneath the neon beer signs. It somehow fits perfectly within the visual layering and quirky personality of the interior. Even the traditions remain intact. At the end of the meal, every customer receives a Tootsie Roll. Places like the Roast Grill are becoming increasingly rare. It is not just a hot dog stand--it is a living piece of Raleigh history. If interested, you can view my post in "The Architecture of..." The hot dog nor the chili were for me. My dog had an almost burnt flavor and the chili had an overly liquidity density without a lot of flavor. I loved the glass bottle cokes. Very reasonably priced but remember it is cash only. Cheers to the longevity and history of this place. It just wasn't for me.
