I hate to reduce stars for price point but this is an exception to the rule. The prices here for what you get are outlandish. My wife and I needed a quick dinner so we chose char grill. She got the char burger i got the 1/4 pounder w cheese, 2 fries and 2 small drinks. $19 later i got a weirdly cut in half rectangular patty which was somehow smaller than my wifes char burger. Both burgers were smaller than a burger you could get from Burger King(for $1 mind you) and im not kidding. The fries were good, but basic fries. $19 for what was probably 1/2 of burger in both meals is highway robbery. Its not like cooking a burger on an open char grill is anything new. Again i dont mind spending $20 even at a fast food joint, if theres food to back it up. Again the food tasted fine, its nothing to write home about, but its certainly not bad. The pricing is just straight out a rip off. Oh and the kicker is I guess on wednesdays charburgers are cheaper, so had it not been Wednesday my bill would have been close to $22. Again Im stressing this, I dont mind any price point for food, but the quality and quantity have to justify the price tag and char burger gets an F for that. read more

Love this place. Lots of memories from the one downtown while at State. The burgers are the best and the dogs are true Carolina dogs. I.e. slaw chili onions mustard for those not from here. Always consistent burgers and best shakes. Don't get a burger from anywhere else! Love to hear the kids say "this is the best". One complaint is they need to wipe tables constantly because they're so busy. read more

We ordered one hot dog and one burger, both items were delivered wrong. 3. The hot dog was mushy, undercooked and flavorless. 4. Why does making a great burger have to be rocket science?? It really does not have to be, but most places try to make it such, and deliver "Uggh" results. The folks that are now running this place (Original founders family) constantly disprove that every time we eat here. They're beyond laser focused on delivering what they promise. The burgers rock, the fries were HOT and perfectly golden brown. AND- you don't have to beg for napkins anymore, either, lol. Don't ask them to vary from the menu - and I get why. They're too focused on being the best, and repeating the results, rather than trying be like some big burger chain ANY WAY you want it. There's no doubt that Char Grill is my second favorite burger joint in town. And this location right next to my favorite Chinese Chinese takeout and since my son doesn't like Chinese food, when the rest of the family wants the best friend rice in Cary/Apex area, he gets a half-pound burger with fries. And, truth be told, I usually get myself a char-burger when I'm picking it up and eat in the car...DON'T TELL MY WIFE! I love a good quirky dive, but I'll dive on somewhere else. Odd ordering system has you put your order into a slot that subsequently gets ignored by the 4 employees who are having a grand conversation while your food doesn't get made. Then when it does, they forget to make the fries and then about 5 other people's food including mine sit waiting for the french fry master to deliver the goods. Then you get to the food and it's *barely* better than a McD's patty in a restaurant saturated with dirty tables and flies. Time to pivot. read more

BEWARE: Of Wednesday Specials Night at Char Grill Hamburgers in Cary, NC. The Discounts are taken off the full price of the individual menu items, Not from the normal Combo prices they offer, but not posted on the Menu. In my case the 1/2lb Hamburger Stake with Fries and a Small Drink Combo is: $9.25 with Tax and on a regular day, but costs $9.75 for the Wednesday Special. From the Sign you think you are saving $0.25 on the fries and $0.10 on small drink. So I am Paying $0.50 MORE for the Special Discounted Price on Wednesday? WTF. I have talked with the local Franchise Managers/Owner and the Franchiser. A few weeks ago the SAME Wednesday COMBO price with tax was $10.02, new price $9.75. I love the food, USED to eat there at least once or twice a week, but now going to other places. The local Cary manager can justify the prices by using the FULL prices listed on the menu, not using the normal COMBO prices that you pay everyday. I saved many of my receipts as proof. The receipt only shows a COMBO price no matter if it is Wednesday or other days you visit. The Wednesday Special is Very MISLEADING, thinking you are SAVING and CHARGED more! I have eaten at 6 other Char-Grill locations, all in Raleigh and on to Benson and Dunn, NC. I may try the other Raleigh locations again to see if they play these misleading pricing games. read more

When I am craving a burger Char-Grill is one of the first places I think about. The burgers are consistently good, they have great fries and if you want to splurge, their shakes are really good. They are super thick which is the way I like them. The best thing about this location is that they have tables both inside and out, not just picnic tables outside like the other locations. The thing that you need to know about this location though is that the fries do NOT come with the burgers like at the other Char Grill locations that I have been to. Whenever I'm in Cary to visit family I like to stop into Char Grill for a fresh made burger (or hot dogs) and French fries. On this visit we picked up a 1/2 pound hamburger steak, 2 hot dogs, French fries, and a fountain drink. Ordering is very easy--just fill out one of the order sheets and slide it into the slot for the kitchen to make your order right in front of you! Then you just wait until they either call your order number (or name). The best item on the menu is the 1/2 pound hamburger steak. There are also other burger options: a 1/4 hamburger steak 'junior', a double charburger, or a regular charburger. Cheese is optional and an additional cost for each burger option. They also have a chicken sandwich, hot dogs, and salads (for health conscious customers) on the menu. read more

Char-Grill isn't a gourmet burger, and it's not good for you, but man, it sure is tasty in moderation. I always get a burger all the way, and the chili is REALLY good. Everything is always made to order so the fries are piping hot, which is something I always appreciate at a burger joint. It's not open until 3 a.m. so Cook-Out is still a better "drunk food" option, but Char-Grill is hard to beat in the daylight hours. read more

Visited Char Grill with my wife for lunch recently. Classic burger chain with little touches like paper order slips you pass through a slot and a flaming grill that (wait for it!) chars their burgers to perfection. I had the Half-Steak, a rectangular steak-burger with customizable toppings, optional cheese, and full of yum. Pretty standard, prepared correctly, juicy, fresh lettuce/tomato. Hit the spot. My wife and I also split one fries and one salad. The fries were lousy, not flavorful and not that crispy - seemed like low-quality potatoes or not enough heat in the fryer. The salad was perfectly fine for a fast-food salad. We sat outside at this location (next to Fresh Market on SW Cary Parkway at Waldo Rood), which we would recommend on a nice day. Another quick lunchtime. As always Char steak burgers are juicy and full of flavor. The 1/2 pounder burger was cooked to order and it took only 6 minutes. The fries where pipping hot, had to throw a little salt on them. I guess for me one of the ways i know a burger is great its messy. The Char Grill's in Raleigh are the best bang for your buck since they have fries added in with the steak jr's. Food tasted great. They keep the ice behind the counter and when I asked for fresh ice the guy behind the counter was less than thrilled to help me. I LOVE my burgers and these are pretty decent. My standards are Burger Bar, In N Out, and 5 Guys. Char Grill isn't in there league IMO but they're still pretty good. I go hear almost 1x / week to take advantage of their Mon & Tues 1.19 special on burgers, dogs, drinks and fries. I haven't had there higher end burgers but they look great. There fries are really tasty and always fresh and crispy. The veggies on the burgers and the quality of the meat is better than most chains. I probably wouldn't go hear as often if not for there deal but the food is pretty good and can be had for cheap. read more

Terrible experience, almost burnt burger. Visited this location for the first time today, will not be going back. To say the guy taking the order slips was in a chaotic state would be a compliment. Several of us waiting (15min+) were by passed by customers who had almost literally just walked in the door (5 min or so wait time for larger orders) Insult to injury, finally received our order and the burgers were overcooked, almost burnt hockey pucks. The fries are awesome. The shakes are more like soft serve so expect a spoon and not a straw. They also offer call-ahead orders... Gloved staff accepting used drink cups from diners in order to refill them, but then not changing into new gloves. So now they're handling food with contaminated gloves. The prices, man. Just insane. My wife and I went a few days ago and got two double cheeseburgers, two regular (meaning small) cheeseburgers, one order of fries (one size--small), and one small drink. TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS. These are classic, small, 1950s style greasy spoon burgers, of course, so even a double cheeseburger is not big. A double cheeseburger combo is NINE DOLLARS AND TEN CENTS. I have lived in Cary for 20+ years but because a lot of my business is in Raleigh I've primarily have ordered from those locations of Char Grill. The food has always been good. Their burgers & chicken sandwiches have been consistantly good. Tonight I placed a phone in order that equaled roughly $25 at the Cary location. Two of the 1/4 lb burgers & one 1/2 lb burger. When I got out to my vehicle I checked the order. There were no fries with the 1/4 lb burgers. I went back in and asked why? I was told by the young man who checked me out that even though the stores are owned by the same company/family that things are done differently in the Cary store because they don't do the volume that the Raleigh stores do. So they charged me for the fries as opposed to the Raleigh stores that include the fries with the jr. steakburgers. Because you live in Cary you have to pay more! I will not go to the Cary location again! It's BS! Cook Out is just as good! read more

The food is good here but there is rarely a time when we come here that every table isn't greasy and dirty. I'm in here right now, it's 430, the place is empty, and its so filthy my seven-year-old daughter noticed. They have no paper towels and napkins require standing in line and getting the attention of an employee. Usually, I go to the bathroom and get wet toilet paper. Ridiculous. Great burgers! These are back-to-basics burgers with toasted sesame seed buns and traditional condiments. Char-grill also boasts fantastic french fries and made to order hot dogs. Most notable I think are the Monday and Tuesday specials of $1.19 each for burgers, dogs, fries and drinks. These burgers are so far superior to any large chain out there that you should really think twice the next time you head out for some BK or Wendy's. Same price, far better. read more

They do actually flame grill the burgers to order, and they are really tasty. This reminds me of so many old flame grilled burger joints from back in the day that have fallen to the wayside. Grest tasting grilled burgers. They have a Wednesday special thats hard to beat, where burgers fries and drinks are $1.70. The fries are cooked perfect and salted to perfection. If you are really hungry get the steak burger or double steak burger. They are huge and really good for over the top quantity. The chili and slaw are nicely done and fresh. The food and service is great. The restaurant and restrooms were clean when I visited. The prices are reasonable. I'm not a fan of the ordering system at all. This deal of filling out a paper and dropping it in a slot is just ridiculous to me. Especially when someone has to ring you up anyway. They had might as well take your order too.
