It has been a little while since I've been here, but considering the lasting impact it has made, I had to write a review on my experience. The last time my wife and I traveled back to NYC to visit my mother, we also decided to rent a car and drive down to North Carolina to visit my sister and her family. On the way down, we decided to stop here, as it seemed right up my alley based on the reviews by Guy and Duff from Food Network. Growing up in NYC, I adore great sandwiches. Unfortunately, it also sets a high standard for comparison. I can confidently say that this is absolutely THE BEST sandwich I have ever tasted.
When pulling up to this place, we understood right away why it was on shows like Triple D. This place truly is in the category of a dive. As we pulled up in the parking lot, right in front of us was the neighboring strip club. I joked around saying, "Oh good, we can get a lap dance after eating!". As soon as you walk through that door, though, you immediately get hit in the face with the delicious smell of meat! You see a small ordering counter and behind is their huge pit that they put all of their meat on. These guys mean business when it comes to this pit! I ordered The Gus, which comes with Ham, Corned Beef, and Turkey, while my wife order the Turkey Rachel, which comes Turkey, Swiss, Coleslaw, and Thousand Island dressing. While we waited and watched the cooks throw all of the meat onto this beautiful pit, we saw the condiments behind us. The one that caught my eye was Tiger Sauce. It has a white color, but a much thinner consistency than mayo. I'm always game for something new so I poured a side of it to try with the sandwich.
Finally, our sandwiches were ready! As soon as I took a look at it, I knew I was in for something special. The sandwich is completely loaded with so much meat and the smell of it was indescribable. I took my first bite and was blown away, but I didn't know how to react verbally or even internally. I grew up in NYC, which is the sandwich mecca, and here I am in Baltimore, across from a strip club, tasting this amazing sandwich. My wife asked how it was and I just simply replied, "it's really good". I couldn't have understated it any more. I put on some tiger sauce, and holy moly it got even better! I thought, how can this be?!? This was the same kind of feeling for when I definitely knew that there was no Santa Claus. I had my wife try some and she agreed that it was really good. I tried a bite of hers and it was great as well. Not as good as mine, but still definitely tasty. For the next five minutes, I'm not proud to say that there wasn't much talking but just pigging out between the two of us.
Later on, in our car ride, my wife kept saying how good the sandwich was and how we should have brought a couple more with us on our road trip. She noticed, though, that I was being a little quiet. She asked why, and wondered if I didn't like it as much as she thought I did. I replied by saying, "No, I definitely did". She asked if I was okay and the only response I could muster up was, "I...I think I just had the best sandwich of my life...". She smiled and confirmed that it really was THAT good. She found it funny that it shook me so hard that I've had this life changing moment of finding the best sandwich of my life. Until this day, I don't know if it was finding the best sandwich of my life that shook me so hard, or the fact that the sandwich is located all the way in Baltimore, 2,500 miles away from me :-(
Either way, if you are ever in the area anywhere close to Maryland, you need to go to this place! Heck, go to Washington D.C. for a nice museum trip and make sure you load up on these sandwiches! It will absolutely change your life! read more
