Their hot roast beef is smoked sliced beef prepared in any "doneness" you would like offers a new view on the classic roast beef and it surely did not disappoint. My favorite place to eat, until yesterday! Been a faithful customer for the past 30 years, from the original to the newer Aberdeen location. Eating here 3-4 times a month I have never been disappointed... until yesterday. Orders 2 Rueben's and large fry to go, once we got home and sat down to eat we saw our sandwiches were burnt. I'm not talking a little burnt, I mean full on, black charred, burnt to the ground destroyed. Nothing beats the sweet Oakie taste of charcoal and carbon paired with corned beef and sauerkraut. Here is my issue, I am not driving all the way back and return food.... Good again! We consumed two roast beef sandwiches, large cole slaw, and a small fries. I got a rare and my husband a medium-medium rare. I think next time I'll get medium rare, rare not as tender as I would have liked. We also got a pit ham sandwich to go for lunch tomorrow. They have so many good choices!! I'm normally not a big fan of cold sandwiches. My only exception is roast beef. Since Chaps is known for beef, I decided to try their Pit Beef sandwich. I really liked the sandwich. I recently moved to the area and that meant finding a new beef spot. Since finding out about it I have been several times and each time has been about the same. I've only gone in on randomly weekdays during the midafternoon so I can't say much about how busy it is but the service has always been great and it's quick. I get the pit sandwich (rare) on a bun which is always like 2lbs of beef so they definitely give you your moneys worth. The meat is nice and moist and the bun is perfectly soft. I did try the Ruben once which was good but I'll definitely stick to the beef. read more

The food here is delicious. They don't have a freezer which means that everything is fresh. Whenever I am in the area I try to stop and eat here. I love Reuben sandwiches and they make an awesome one here. Service is quick and friendly. The ambiance is fine as well. I've never heard of it, but the sign and website says it's famous, so damn, I'm going to give it a try. I ordered pork ribs and burnt ends with a side of coleslaw. The cashier was friendly and helpful, and her eyes lit up when I asked her if the burnt ends were good!! When I saw that I had to get them. Ok, I know I'm from California, but what I got for burnt ends wasn't what I was expecting. Not that it was bad, but I was expecting brisket burnt ends. What I got was chunks of meat, probably beef, chicken, pork - not really sure what was in there. It looked like the end bits from meats that had been sliced for sandwiches. Mixed with some bbq sauce and hot sauce it was really pretty good. I also ordered a pound of pork ribs. I'm not the biggest fan of spare ribs, but these were really good. I ate here and about 30 minutes after eating, I had the worse case of food poisoning in my life. I got dehydrated so quickly that I passed out and had to go the hospital. So my $40 family meal cost me after everything over $2000. It took me 2 days to be able to call Chaps and the manager on duty said it couldn't have happened there and that he buys gloves all the time and offered me a free meal!! WHAT!!! I told him I want nothing from you and I don't want your free meal, just make sure you don't get anyone else sick. Hadn't been to Chaps in a while. What a huge disappointment. For a signature staple restaurant in Maryland, Chap's ought be extremely ashamed of itself. Absolutely embarrassing. We got several "small" sides. Small is in quotations because it's a term used extremely loosely. Apparently, a "small" to Chap's is literally a tiny sample cup. I'm not joking when I say that It's a shot glass sized side. The Cole Slaw and Macaroni and cheese were legitimately only two spoonfuls each. Chap's used to serve sandwiches that were piled high with meats. Not anymore. When we got home to enjoy our (now pitiful in hindsight) meal, let's just say that Arby's serves sandwiches that are piled higher. In addition, the quality of the food has really gone downhill. The pit beef was mediocre and the cole slaw was dry and had no flavor. That's no exaggeration. The cole slaw literally tasted like nothing. No taste. Nada. We won't be going back. For a restaurant that prides itself in being a real, true, original Maryland staple, they don't deserve that title anymore when fast food restaurants like Arby's have bigger servings and higher quality. read more

I know the Chaps Pit Beef goodness, I went with "The Plymouth" which is turkey and ham cooked on the pit. The first thing I noticed is how stacked this sandwich is! I'm a Chief Election Judge for a polling place in Aberdeen MD. Every election I have worked so far I have brought BBQ from Chaps to feed the people working at the polling place I help manage. I have always had good service and the food was prepared well. However today I stopped by to pick up my order .... They charged over twice what I was quoted over the phone, my order was not ready. I had to wait while they scrambled to put it together. I ordered the bbq to be cold ... it came hot. I was supposed to get plates, napkins, and utensils. They were not included. I was on my way to Baltimore for work and I noticed it was lunch time and I'm trying to stay on schedule so I punch up restaurants on Yelp and notice Chaps. Ok it's located in a strip mall. I expected a free standing building but whatever. Turns out it's cafeteria style which turned me off immediately but BBQ, I'll stick it out. Apparently this is a chain restaurant in Maryland and their claim is Guy Fieri has endorsed them. So I order a sandwich and get a number. I check out the condiment bar and drink fountain. Not impressed, and to boot they're playing heavy metal music through their sound system. I'm not happy but they call my number, I pick up my sandwich and sauces from the condiment bar and head to my table. Still not happy, but then the music changes and Smokey Robinson starts singing "Tears of a Clown ". Yes I love Motown and my mood is changing quickly. The place was busy. We received our food pretty quickly. The food however was just so so nothing special at all. My son had a cheese burger and he said it wasn't very good. Where do we start? They lean a lot in Guy Fieri's visit on Dinners, Drive in's, and Dives. His face is everywhere. Seriously! The restaurant was clean. Customer service was not too friendly. We guess the cashier was having a bad day or just didn't want to be there. Ordered a two meat sandwich (sausage and medium beef) with fries and coleslaw. The first sandwich was the wrong sandwich (observing the counter, I was not the only one who received he wrong order) & the second one was dry. The fries were good and the slaw was alright. I have been coming to Chaps for years in the original location and the Aberdeen location. I usually get the Turkey Rachael. Seems like this location switched to the cheapest turkey lunchmeat that they can find. Did not even taste like turkey and meat was so processed it had that translucent look to it. Turkey used to be real pit turkey. Not sure if this location is trying to save money but that was the most expensive terrible lunchmeat sandwich I have ever had. read more

The ambiance here reminds me of a Texas bbq joint.. complete with bench seats in the middle of the restaurant. We arrived 45 mins. prior to closing but they were already mopping the floors. When we came in, they returned the seats... just awkward and strange they were cleaning up so early. I guess it was ok since the staff was still pretty friendly and the whole restaurant was immaculately clean. We ordered beef bbq sandwiches, mac n cheese, and large fries. The beef came medium and sliced similarly to Arby's. This was a little bland on it's own but with the house bbq sauce, much tastier. My comment on this is that since the beef is cooked to medium, the meat is a little chewy and difficult to bite through. We ended up having to use a knife and fork to eat it as the slices are rather large and difficult to eat as a sandwich. Overall... higher quality than Arby's but I was expecting more of a beef brisket type smoked meat, so I was a little disappointed in what I got. Our large fries was seriously large! Nice and crispy, no complaints on this item. The small mac and cheese was seriously small. Huge difference between their small and large portions.. the taste was very bland. I usually love mac n cheese and only had two bites of this before finishing my meal. The staff never rushed us to leave and just kept being cordial. Sodas are over 2 bucks per (soda is wicked cheap and usually costs the owner between 5 and 20 cents). I asked for a cup of water at the counter and the girl offered me a Dixie cup, yes a Dixie cup. I'm torn on whether or not I'd recommend. Food was okay, fairly bland. The Pit beef was a great cut, very tender but had no flavor. Definitely needed sauce to give it some flavor, but all that was on hand was BBQ sauce. The sides were labeled as small, they're more like tiny. We haven't been to a Chap's for many years now and since we were in the Aberdeen area for some baseball fun, we were glad to find a Chap's near the stadium. Everything we remember about it still holds true after all these years. We got the pit beef sandwich, the Guy's Triple D (corned beef, beef, and sausage--I added American cheese to it), and the Bull Dog (sausage and beef). Everything was delicious and the mix of meats that we got went very well together. The sausage has a hint of heat which is nice and the corned beef was cooked well. The beef, thinly sliced, is such a Maryland tradition that you have to get it at Chap's to get it right! read more

Exceptional food, great service and gut busting portions. I ordered the Richmond and cheese fries (see pics). Unlike other places they layer the fries with the cheese instead of dumping cheese on top. So every bit is smothered. Excellent idea!! The sandwich was way too big to bite or get my hands around. I love chaps. I was in the area to pick up someone and found this lovely place and I had to go. I've only had it once while I was in Maryland way back when and I remember it being one of the best meat places I've been to. The meat is cooked the way you each it (medium rare all the way) and it's off massive quantities. I also got large fries and boy... The difference between a regular and large is massive. I would invest the extra dollar for the large fries cause it's worth. They have their own sauces made and I love their BBQ sauce. Not too sweet; got just enough kick to make you keep wanting more. They have all the onion slices you can eat as well. The thing that surprised me the most is the friendliness of the staff at this location. Whether you are sitting outside or inside, this one lady was just everywhere. Even though it wasn't a sit down restaurant, she treated it like one. In the end, good but not great. The counter line to order moved quickly. There was no advice on the sides, not even what other people liked or or ordered. I got the stewed tomatoes with onions and green peppers. The food came out quickly. I got the beef sandwich and it was admittedly a large mound of beef for the price.
