Good food for late nights cravings. I had the Chaplin A.S.S. ramen which was like a blend of Japanese ramen and Laotian kapoon. The ramen had some identity issues and I probably should have stuck to the traditional ramen fare. The appetizers were done well and came out quick. I ordered a Paloma style cocktail which was okay, I thought it lacked fresh grapefruit juice. I also had a yogurt soju which came surprisingly in a can. The location was good and service was very attentive even during the late hours we went. It was Asian food in an old east coast ambiance restaurant. I guess that's the theme of this review, identity crisis. Sorry I really wanted to like it more. read more

Second time to Chaplin' since my boyfriend had a strong craving for their deliciously unique black sesame ramen. Located in a cool neighborhood with nice outdoor seating, we had reservations for a Saturday night and were seated right away, although if you have some extra time, there are free bags of popcorn for you while you're waiting. We started with the gyoza and dumplings, both of which were okay but nothing special. The boyfriend always really loves his black sesame ramen, which I will admit is pretty unique. I always get the spicy broth, which is the perfect amount of heat with being overwhelming. Hearty broth and chewy noodles with a nice additional helping of baby bak choy, i think Chaplin's probably one of the most underrrated ramen places in DC. Overall a solid ramen with great flavors. Wow. So delicious. The pork gyoza was perfectly fried and the meat was juicy& tasty. Great appetizer to share or have for yourself. We also ordered the pork buns, which was my least favorite dish. I prefer pork belly buns to be more crisp, but these were very saucy (great flavors, just too much). I ordered the Stamina Spicy ramen with extra pork and extra corn. Wow. The flavors and texture from the noodles were great. My tastebuds were not disappointed. The portion of the ramen was a lot! For the price you pay, it's totally worth it given the amount you get and the flavors. I was not disappointed! We ordered The Cure as a drink and let me tell you, one will do the trick. Chaplins might be the king of happy hours. Or is that chappy hour? Until 7, the house cocktails, draft beers, and wines by the glass are half off. HALF OFF. That's $6 off the cocktails. And these cocktails are expertly mixed as well as the best cocktail bars in the city. In addition to a spectacular sazeracx I also got a nice high abv stout for just $4.50. Now that's a steal. And they have tons of options, a key feauture of a winning happy hour. No happy hour deals on food, but for a happy hour this good, who cares? The specials are available no matter where you sit, downstairs bar, upstairs bar, table, or patio. Reservations are recommended because the place was absolutely packed. We got lucky and were able to snag a seat at the bar around 6 on a Saturday without a reservation, so we did order food as well. While ramen is their signature, the appetizers offer more interesting options. The standout: drunken masters, which are fried dumplings that they infuse with alcohol right in front of you. The waiter brings out an instrument that looks like a giant flu shot, sticks it into the center of each dumpling, and shoots the dumpling up. We went with the shrimp and mezcal, which was unreal. I bit in and got a burst of smoky mezcal. The flavors blend perfectly, so I cannot wait to go back and try the other options. Alcohol infused dumplings? That is next level. The place is named after Charlie Chaplin and has a 1930s, old Hollywood theme, with lighting above the bar shaped like movie set lights, and a flickering projection on the wall upstairs showing an old silent film. It all creates a sense of chic mystery to the proceedings, a feeling that is only intensified after a few cheap happy hour cocktails. I can't believe it took me so long to give them a try, but they are one of the most exciting DC discoveries I have had in a long while. read more

What can I say about Chaplin's? It's a little ramen place but more importantly, it's the first time I was ever carded for ordering gyoza. I'll explain: -Whiskey A-Go-Go: My pork goyza was injected with whiskey via a legit sized syringe. I was intrigued by this but didn't enjoy it. Not sure if the guy was too heavy handed with the whiskey, but eating it felt like taking a bite of pork and a shot of whiskey at the same time. Don't get me wrong, bartenders: I like heavy handed pouring; just not in my food. -Chaplin's Buns - these Japanese braised pork bao buns were delicious. Perfectly crispy and seasoned. -Chaplin Ramen - SO good. The black bean paste was a risk that was rewarded. Gives the ramen a unique taste. I added corn. I just like corn. -Made-up Ramen: my friend pretty much customized the s**t out of her ramen. Just look at the photo and you can look at the mess. The magical, delicious mess. Overall, great visit. The place is tiny so make a reservation. Parking is limited but you can find some on the street. Expect to be confused when you enter and see a ramen place littered with Charlie Chaplin everywhere. The server explains it well. They want to give a feel of the "golden age of Hollywood;" the epitome of excitement, sociability and theatricality. I dig it. I enjoyed coming here when the place just opened (5-6 years ago?) but now it went downhill. Food, ramen particularly, is delicious, that's why we do take out quite often but dining in experience has been bad again and again. Last time we came to enjoying the nice weather on the patio on Friday evening. When I came to check in our reservation , very unpleasant man that acted and looked more like a manager, definitely not like a welcoming host, just threw in my face that our table is not ready yet and that's it. 20 min after our reservation time i came again to check on our table and this man once again acted very rude and said "your table already paid, I can't kick them out". I asked how long does he think it will take, because we came with the baby and we couldn't just hang out near restaurant entrance forever, he said "it will happen eventually". Is it my problem that they didn't time our table or didn't set the expectation for the dining in group sitting at our table? I don't think so. Our server Merybath was quite unfriendly too. She was very mild and in her own thoughts, kept forgetting stuff. Also, does wearing a mask mean server doesn't have to smile? Guests could still feel a vibe, right. It's a noisy atmosphere, especially on the weekends, so if you are looking for a quiet, cozy corner somewhere to have a deep and thoughtful conversation, this is not your place. However, if you are looking for a good time, good noodles and good cocktails, this is it. The energy is lively and I suggest requesting a seat upstairs so you can get the advantage of the views from the windows as well as the endless reel of Charlie Chaplin that is shown on the wall above the stairs. As an absolute Ramen lover, this is not a place for traditional Ramen. There are plenty of places in DC that do a traditional Tonkotsu, Shio, Shoyu or Miso ramen better, but if you are looking for a unique spin on these traditional styles, Chaplin makes a great, generous bowl! Food Suggestions: Skip the injected dumplings, the alcohol adds very little. Their gyoza and shumai options are infinitely better. I suggest the shrimp shumai fried and the gyoza steamed. I had the pleasure of enjoying the people watching at the upstairs bar while I waited for her (DC traffic of course...) The bartender was so friendly and nice and so were my other bar mates. I ordered "the tramp" to help pass the time...and boyyyy was she great company. Smooth smooth smooth. Finally when my gf came we were seated. We chatted and chatted and chatted until finally we NEEDED an app. The gyoza was delicious and gone in a heartbeat. We also ordered the pork buns...yummmm!!! I ordered the Chaplin A.S.S. ramen for my main. Having loved the gyoza soooo much I decided to get extra in my ramen as well as more noodles. AMAZING!!!!!! Warming, flavorful...a perfect dish for a cool DC night. I will admit I probably didn't need the extra noodles as there were already plenty in the ramen. Rookie mistake. I was already wowed just walking in. We were seated upstairs and the vibe immediately brought me back to Beirut where restaurants are basically lounge clubs with great music and very original decor. The it took me a while to order a drink because the selection is very original and everything looked super tasty. Ended up settling on a frozen cocktail. Their drinks at STRONG so you get what you're paying for which is refreshing in this area. The pork steamed dumplings were on point, the porker belly app was a tad over cooked but tasted excellent. My aunt got this very strange looking dumpling/shooter combo which was a fun experience. Almost all of us got the Chaplin A.S.S. whole house by the ingredient list is a play off tom kha ghai thai soup which is my FAVORITE. The taste was phenomenal, a beautiful symphony between a creamy broth packed w a tart lunch from the spices. I added the stamina egg over typical poached it was PHENOMENAL- it's essentially a soft boiled egg but they roll the yolk in some sort of spice mix. There were two things that weren't great, one was the service. I think the bartender took our initial orders and then she disappeared so we asked someone else to assist. The second was the contents of adding "extra vegetables" to your ramen. I was hoping to see an array of mushrooms, corn, greens, perhaps zucchini or squash - but really all you get is a half a head of cabbage and sprouts. I think they should explain that in the menu or by voice when they're taking your order to set expectations as I think it was an extra $4 just for that. All in all though, I will definitely be returning. I am a fan. This was my first ramen experience in D.C and I am so glad that my friends decided to pick this place to be my first. We arrived to Chaplin around 9:30pm and the vibe was great. There were still a lot of people on a Thursday night and upstairs is an extreme yes! The menu. The menu was simple but had interesting and noteworthy items. The prices were pretty standard D.C but wasnt overly expensive. I decided to eat the Chaplin Ramen. Great. The broth was perfect. The black bean paste was a great addition and most importantly the egg was cooked to ramen perfection! Soft boiled. The noodles were chewy, the pork was yummy, and everything in it was great. I had tried an addition of their spicy sauce that is usually inside the Chaplin Ass and DANG was it super spicy. Probably will stay away since I cant handle the heat. So if you can I recommend trying the Chaplin Ass or order a side of the spicy sauce. Service. The service was great for a party of 8! Our waiter was very attentive and came back to us when he thought we needed service. It was great to have a nice and patient server with a large table that we had. Imagine if we had a smaller group! I have learned not to trust DC Yelpers on their views on ramen. I ordered the Chaplin ramen ($14), which included pork belly chashu, half a soft boiled egg, bean sprouts and black sesame paste in a tonkotsu (milky) soup base. Overall, the bowl of ramen wasn't half bad. The noodles were done well and the soft boiled egg was enjoyable. However, I did not like the fact that when the ramen was served it was lukewarm, not hot. The black sesame paste also wasn't for me, it made the soup black-ish and it was just strange. Sweet black sesame paste in ramen just doesn't fit. Lastly, I felt the bowl of ramen wasn't enough noodles, extra ingredients or what. I finished the bowl of noodle in like 10 minutes and I wasn't full. However, I really enjoyed their parfaits! One of the best that I've had and one that I would most definitely return to eat again. The Matcha Parfait ($10) could be shared between two or three people even. It was delicious. A nice mix between matcha ice cream, vanilla ice cream, cake, and green tea pocky. The decor of the restaurant also felt strange - it was like this old-time lounge with all their staff dressed in suspenders and a mix between a speakeasy as well. Okay food - I was surprised by the portion for $14 and only 1.5 pieces of chashu like can I get at least 2 or 3 pieces my man. But let me say the ramen (Chaplin's is what I ordered) was booooommbbb!! It had such a clean taste to it and the addition of black pepper into the broth was killer. There were enough sprouts and cabbage and aahh just the broth was creamy and so so so good and then the hot sauce killed it on top. I got two of their drinks as well The Tramp and The Vagabond and boy of by were they goooodd. And you know I don't know if it's a California thing but for some reason us CA folks just know when we have another hommie from the state sitting by us and that's where I met Chloe, a business owner you grew up in LA and we just shared conversation over drinks and it just made it all worth while. Very neat theme upon entering the restaurant (Charlie Chaplin I assume) and lively bar area. I noticed there was a popcorn machine with bags (though I wasn't offered any at any point :/). We ordered the wontons and chicken and shrimp dumplings for our appetizers and they were delicious!! Wish we had more wontons with our order. For our entrees we ordered the spicy ramen and added vegetables which made it super filling. The ramen was super delicious and had a nice flavor, I definitely will be back. Service is not good here so don't come in with high expectations on that regard. Our server Ronald was non existent and seem scattered, good thing we are low maitenence. He didn't even introduce himself and I only know his name because I found it on the bill. A restaurant dedicated to my favorite Romany son, Charlie Chaplin, how can I resist? Before I was even greeted by the hostess, I was met with a vintage popcorn cart peddling puffed kernels in brown paper bags and murals of the silent screen great on the wall. I'll have to hand it to the developers, they really managed to capture the essence of Chaplin and his era without making it seem gaudy or over-the-top. The restaurant is still in it's soft opening phase so a few menu items are still unavailable. Don't let that deter you however, their cocktails, dumplings and ramen are all solid choices. As some have complained, the cocktails are pricey at $13 a glass but what else would you expect in the area? They are innovative and delicious (not to mention deceptively strong) I personally enjoyed the Pilgrim which was a not-too-sweet tropical delight featuring fresh pineapple. Also of note, you get 20% off your first round of drinks with check-in on Yelp and happy hour features half-off cocktails! The chicken and shrimp shumai dumplings were fantastic, way better than the frozen ones I've gotten used to eating from the Asian grocery store. The thin wrapper allowed you to taste all of the fresh ingredients in every bite and it wasn't gummy in the least. Since they were not serving Yakisoba at this time, I ordered the Chaplin as my entree, hich featured Pork Belly Chashu, Seasoned Egg, Scallion, Beansprouts, Black Sesame Paste And Tonkatsu Flavor in it. This is the classic ramen that I usually get, except the black sesame paste added a deeper, richer flavoring to the broth. It was very good, but so rich I could barely eat 1/3 of my bowl. The boy on the other hand was in love with the spicy ramen which featured a lighter but more fiery broth. I didn't even get a chance to try his since his bowl was gone in less than five minutes. All in all a great experience. Service was a bit awkward (but very eager so I appreciated that) but I am sure that they will be working that out in the next coming weeks. Alright, let me admit it now. I am a ramen snob and I am proud. Whenever I hear that a new ramen place is in town, I will climb mountains and swim across lakes just to get to that hot piping bowl of noodle goodness. That being said, this place was very disappointing, and not worth the trek (the drive from Sterling to Washington D.C... NOVA traffic... you know how that is). I ordered the duck ramen and it was not what I was expecting. The broth was bland, I did not like the consistency of the noodles, and to sum it all up, it tasted very americanized. The only thing that I liked about my ramen was the duck meat. It was the only part of my bowl that was flavorful and succulent. However, I can comment that the pork gyoza was tasty. Delicious and reasonably priced Asian food and cocktails in Shaw. Shaw has recently become a new go to destination in DC. A neighborhood with splendid character and restaurants that can satisfy even the most sophisticated palates. I have been to Chaplins on many occasions but my favorite experiences always come on Sunday's at noon (right when they open). The place is normally not packed (rare here!) and it is easy to get your choice of an indoor or outdoor table. The patio is cozy and if the weather is nice out I would highly recommend getting some vitamin D with your meal. Happy hours are also decent here. Let me get the bad out of the way. Don't get the house made ginger soda. It tastes literally like nothing. They have delicious cocktails and my favorites in the summer are their frozen slushies. I highly recommend getting the green tea slushie but be careful because they will creep up on you - more than 2 and you will likely not remember your Chaplin experience! The food has something for everyone. I recommend staying away from the shooter dumplings (alcohol with a dumpling) - they sound great in theory but they aren't really that good. The shrimp and pork gyoza are tasty and my favorite item on the menu is the tori karaage (Japanese style fried chicken that you MUST try!). I have also had the chicken yakisoba and while it is no wagamama it definitely hits the spot. I haven't tried their ramen but everyone raves about it.
