Now I see why this place has a lot of 1 star reviews. Came here to just hang out and relax, but at the end of the night it was quite the opposite. So when it was time to pay my tab, I noticed that there was some extra drinks and the tab. I inquired about it only to be met with attitude...mind you the attitude was not only from the female server. I guess customer service here is only great after you tip. Honestly I dont see the point. I get charged extra drinks in hope that I will leave extra tip. That doesn't make any sense to me. So of course you're not getting any more cash from me. It could have been an honest mistake, but my grip is how many people dont check their bills and assume that it is correct? My friends and I LOVE champs for their Monday night trivia with a CASH PRIZE. They have an incredible turnout weekly, and are guaranteed to never start on time (used to be 7pm, then 8pm, most times it's 8:20ish). They have nightly specials and the beers are affordable, making it a reasonable place to spend a couple hours. My understanding is that they've just revamped the food menu, which has a more sophisticated local twist than your average bar food. We will definitely try it out next week when we're there. I have been going to Champs for YEARS for food and imbibing in adult beverages. That said, I can attest to the progressive growth, improvement in food and menu, improvement in the operations starting with the kitchen. I'm not a big sports person but I can honestly say, if you like sports and enjoy watching the big screens outside of your home; Champs is the place to go. They have multiple big screens and the area is spread out such that you can watch a variety of televised sports activities. The establishment is CLEAN and I am impressed with the restroom facilities and the amount of consideration that went into the restroom design and equipment. Come on! It's a restroom for Pete's Sake in a Sports Bar. OK, I won't beat this to death because I am totally impressed and grateful.... I did notice they expanded their wine list. I'm not much of a whiskey type so I can't comment on their other beverages including that on the top shelf. I'm guessing if its anything like the improvement on the wine list, it must be pretty good. Putting aside the big screen tv's and the adult beverages, you can go to Champs for a nice relaxing dinner if you so chose. For a big thankful Thursday I came to my favorite pub! The food is superb service excellent, ambiance great and the screens for watching Thursday night football all great. I had a grand time as usual. And the food terrific. Jarrel was great at the bar. Very Aloha friendly and just down right nice. Jason was as well. Of course Shaun is terrific. Over the evening watching green bay get sunk by the titans made it very special. I ordered their kimchi fried calamari which was perfectly cooked and I'd definitely get again. Crunchy and full of flavor. The chicken wings are great as well. Not over or undercooked with a crunchy exterior and I ordered extra garlic. And even a Korean would be blasted by the taste. PS I've been in the Korean community for some 50 years. Later on I had the waygu sliders and fries. Also excellent. I'm so thankful for this place, the owner and staff. Always passed by this sports bar on Waialae never have gone in. Finally I decided to stop by only because had a friend in town from California. We ordered a pitcher of beer and a order of their shoestring fries. The fries was ok crispy and thin and just enough salt. Nice sports bar with dart boards and a decent pupu menu. Wife and I went in on a Wednesday for casual date night of Pupus and a couple of beverages so we thought we'd try it out and in the end turned out to be a good decision but honestly it took a while to get there. Firstly, parking is an issue so please be aware and plan accordingly. They have only a few spot on the second floor and you'll need to get a parking pass from the bartender and then go back and put it in your car. Not the greatest but an option. When we first went in we asked the bartender if we order at the bar or there's a server. With our much welcoming he said here and asked what we wanted. Being new there I asked what he had on tap. Reluctantly he replied but when I went to ask my wife what she wanted he left so when I was ready to order I had to get his attention again. Seemed a little weird as they weren't busy but we got our order in and beverages in hand. Btw you have to leave your credit card to start a tab. Understandable if it's busy or we don't appear responsible for paying. Either was the case. When we were ready to order pupus, I asked, I think the floor manager, if there was a server yet he wanted to mention go to the bartender but ended up taking our two item order. The bartender came by to drop off napkins and silverware and then started warming up to us. Guess being new to him he was reluctant to invest time but since we stayed for more than one bev and now having pupus it's worth his time. Ordered pork chops and fried zucchini and both were good. Pork chops were cut up pupu style and had a side dipping sauce made of some kind of fruit, we think apple, and also served on a bed of small greens. It went nicely together. The zucchini was a little thicker cut, which I liked, and topped with parmesan cheese with a side ranch dressing dipping sauce. Oh, btw, there was a very talented musician playing cover music in the middle of the room which I thought was simply music being played over the sound system of professional musicians. We were facing the other way so didn't see him till later. All he had was a guitar and sound box and he was pretty good. Would we come back? Definitely. It turned out to be a nice casual place that's really a sports bar in Kaimuki. Maybe because it was a Wednesday. Maybe cause it was earlier in the evening. Either way we'll be back. read more

Yuck!! This place went really down hill. We ordered the New York steak, fried rice and garlic chicken with bbq sauce...? The steak was easily the worst steak I've ever had in my life. So tough couldn't even eat a piece of it. When I mentioned it to the bartender he just rolled his eyes at me. The food was horrible hence bbq sauce on garlic chicken. I had my surprise birthday held here(Pre covid) and it was great! There is tons to do here like playing darts, pool, Jenga and connect 4 haha! All the bar games you can think of really. It felt very laid back and made it better for that reason. The food wasn't the best even for a bar standards and we couldn't get much water the entire time no matter how many times we asked. Maybe the employees there are a little too laid back as it wasn't that busy when we got there and yet they almost didn't seem to listen to us. We will be back! Crowd seemed to be a lot of regulars and pool sharks, but me and a coworker ended up coming several times this week. We ended up at the dart boards and had a good time. Food was okay. Ambience was nice, the dart board & pool table were kept in good condition. But the service...went on the night before thanksgiving. Walked in and asked the person working if we can sit anywhere or do you want us at a certain place cause we had a party of 7 and he goes "well...what do you think"...ignored him and sat on a table. They no longer have local pupus and I was disappointed I couldn't get fried saimin, fried rice, or the New York Steak pupu style. This would be a great place to watch a game. Went almost STARVING while watching the early morning UH football game here on their big huge beautiful HD TVs so I didn't have the exact positive experience I would have liked but it's OK bc I just love their name: "CHAMPS" ! Great name for a sports bar! :) Well, it's now UH Football season again and time for me and my UH Football fan group to figure out and decide where to see away UH fb games! We came here just once last year and wdk if we should come here again! :( Well maybe we know! But maybe things are different, yeah?! :) Highlights of my one and only experience here: DOES show UH football games! They've got a line of HUGE beautiful TVs along one wall but they PROBABLY WON'T HAVE FOOD FOR PURCHASE bc they have no kitchen! NO FOOD bc NO KITCHEN: If you get hungry and decide to get food from one of the surrounding businesses, this bar will NOT let you bring in the outside food EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE NO KITCHEN. NO OUTSIDE FOOD so JUST EAT OUTSIDE: So you're watching the game and then suddenly get hongory. Don't do it! Do the zen thing and just be at peace with your empty tummy! Well, that or drink more alcohol..or water! In all absolute for-real seriousness, if you do go out to get food from outside, they will make you eat your food outside on the sidewalk! BRING IN THE FOOD FOR YOU WITHOUT ASKING: If you tell them that you're hungry, they might promise - when you ask - to have food available then forget all about it. When you remind them, they might decide to order something but won't ask for your input what you want. Then, instead, they will order whatever they want to serve you (even though they promised to let you decide what you want to order) then will show up to your table informing you that the food is here. They will make you feel like you have no choice bc you are the one who asked about food and you are the one who said you wanted to order something. For instance, they tried to charge me for 15 plates ($150) without even asking me what I wanted to eat or confirming the number of plates to order. We did buy a bunch of plates but there was no way we had 10 ppl there that day (obviously?) sitting in that bar watching the UH game. The food was from Fukuya (a bit down the street in Moiliili) which I love but for some reason that day was just not doing it for me. Plus, it didn't help that I didn't have a choice about what I was going to eat. To top it off, when we arrived in the morning, the bartender was grouchy running around sorta like a chicken without a head. He almost snapped at me when I asked if he could turn up the volume on the HD TVs. Sorry! The game had already begun and honestly, I couldn't hear! What's a deaf UH fan (me) supposed ta do?!?! But I digress. Plus he said he didn't have that much sleep. Poor guy :( :( :( So...That was the first and last time we were here. It also made us go to Dave n Busters! :( But alas, let my experience not deter you from coming here! This happened last UH football season (2015)! Hopefully it's not like that any longer, they have an in-house kitchen, and more better customer service! :) And besides, why not give them a try; they've got the best of everything else: 1) LOCATION can't be beat! Find them conveniently long Waialae Ave on the right just before the park heading toward the restaurant complex with Happy Days, Big City Diner, Duk Kee, Via Gelato. If you pass the park, you went too far. 2) PARKING LOT of their own! They've got their own parking lot right upstairs! I was so impressed! What a fun place! It was so fun I hit it twice in the same afternoon/evening. Fresh, clean, hip! Great games, great "jukebox", great service. Met some friends before going to a planned dinner at Hale Vietnam. When dinner was done we hot footed it back for more cocktails, more games, more music. Smack in the middle of Kaimuki, directly across the street from Tamura's for those like me who are destination challenged. Didn't get to try the food because of the dinner plans but I am very interested in the Duck Confit Lumpia next time I am there. Parking is up the neighboring ramp so no driving around looking for a spot on the street. So, I suppose when asking a friend to meet you at a new bar, you shouldn't skimp on any details. A group of friends and I decided to check out this new bar on Waialae Avenue and asked our friend from Kauai who was just visiting for the day to meet us at Champs. So when he called saying that he couldn't find us, we thought maybe he went to Champion Bar which has been given the nickname "Champs" by some locals. Nope, he didn't go there. He went to Champs in Kahala Mall. Yes, the shoe store. Whoops. Anyhow, we gave him all of the details that we initially should have and he made it over just fine and we all had a good time. Champs is a fairly new bar located on Waialae Avenue. There's parking available up the ramp right before the bar. I'm not sure what to make of the bar yet. I think that they still need to work out a few kinks and the bar will be in top shape. At first glance, the bar looks great-the bar was nice and tidy, they have multiple TV's on the wall, a lot of seating options and the bar is lined with video games. Their restrooms are very clean (totally expected them to be since the bar is new). However, I was slightly disappointed in their food menu. They have some good things available but were missing a major bar staple: fries. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't serve burgers and sandwiches...but they do. They also have some really delicious sounding-Ahi and Tako poke on the menu but I can't tell you how they taste because it wasn't available on the day we went. (1st strike) Their bar had a ton of drinks to choose from but we weren't served everything we asked for because it was the bartender's second day on the job...alone. Someone in our party ordered a mojito. Bartender said there was no mint so she asked if a mojito without mint was OK. My friend agreed (crazy to have a mojito without the mint but eh, it is what it is). Even though the drink didn't come with the mint, it didn't taste like a mojito. Something was definitely missing-simple syrup maybe? My friend returned the mojito, told the bartender it didn't taste right and ordered something else. (2nd strike) Another friend ordered a martini and the bartender apologized because she didn't know how to make that type of martini since it was her second day on the job and offered another drink that she knew how to make. My friend ended up ordering wine instead and guess what-they didn't have that type of wine. (3rd/4th strike?) Meanwhile, the rest of us were ordering drinks just fine and they took forever to come because like the bartender said, it was her second day on the job. It was totally cool that it was her second day; everyone has to start somewhere and learn somehow but...by herself?! There weren't any other bartenders or any other employees around to help her. Great job Champs, way to go throwing your employees into the fire like that with a table full of thirsty patrons. On the plus side, they have a couple of decent happy hours: Super Happy Hour and Reverse Happy Hour. Super Happy Hour is every day from 4pm-7 pm and all day on Sunday. The drinks are at least $1 off and they serve $2 hot dogs during this time. The Reverse Happy Hour is from 10pm-closing on Monday-Saturday. Their drinks are discounted and they also have $2 hot dogs during this time. They have all beef dogs, spicy smoked sausage and brats. The all-beef hot dog was pretty good and it tasted just like the kind they serve at Costco. Overall, I gave Champs 3 stars for the ambiance and features of the bar, the good memories the bar allowed us to make with friends, and for the customer service. Not for the lack of bartending knowledge and experience but for the bartender's efforts. She was apologetic for the slow service and for not being able to serve every drink we asked for but she was really sweet and was still very attentive to our needs. I don't think it was her fault she was on her own. That seemed unacceptable to leave a new bartender on her own on her second day. I hope this business steps up their training and ends up doing well. The concept seems great and I'm sure there are many, many more great memories to be made here! read more
