Out in Kalihi and found myself inside of a true dive bar that checks all the boxes: dimly lit, a…read morepool table tucked away in the corner that probably isn't level, and the one regular who has his assigned seat at the bar. Underdogs is actually a lot bigger than it appears from the outside, which is sort of nondescript - so much that you could easily miss it from the street. Lots of dining seating on the inside and plenty of room at the bar. Lots of flat screens on the walls, too, so I'm pretty sure this spot gets crowded during football season. Like many other bars around town, they have open mic karaoke. This spot is country-music friendly, so make sure your Garth Brooks is on point. Lots of local pupus in their menu. Kind of hungry so we ordered the following: - Dynamite chicken - 7/10: I would say it's like chicken karaage with lots of Sriracha mayo drizzled on top along with bonito flakes. Large and shareable pieces for maybe 2-3. Very filling and tasty. - Fried rice with smoked meats - 6/10: large portion shareable between 2-3 people. Good dish and they give you a lot of smoked pork meat. Unfortunately, the pieces were quite tough. Rice was on point and flavorful, however. This is a great spot to chill with nice people in a comfortable, unpretentious environment. Go off the beaten path for once and check this spot out as a great time was had by all.

I pointed it out to the waiter and she said she thinks it's just a gnat that's been flying around and just landed on the pizza. I had to tell her, ma'am... this does not have any wings on it. it is not flying. it is not a gnat. She said she can take it back and get me another one if I'd like. I don't want anything from back there--y'all can keep it. eeeeeyuuuck!

Only difference now is they are a sit down establishment serving margaritas and the like. I try carne asada at almost every Mexican eatery I stop at and this place rises to the top. Authentic taste; as if you were somewhere in Mexico. Any menu item is well flavored. That's all you need to know. Oh, their portions are huge so be mindful when ordering. If I had to pick one thing bordering negative it is the location as they are on Kalihi Street well into the Kalihi Valley. But, you will get used to it after your first visit; afterall, it's worth the journey into the "valley" Couple things you should know and that is chicken enchiladas are not made daily. I think it's Tuesday and Thursday? Not sure but it is limited. If you don't already know, their Kapahulu location closed a few years ago. They do intend on opening another location in Pauoa Valley I'm told and another location in Pearl Kai... I hope I'm not spreading rumors.... Regardless.... get there or be square!

The menu runs the gamut from burgers to sashimi, fish tacos, ahi, kalua pork and more. The staff is very friendly and does an amazing job of keeping clients happy. The ambiance is the restaurant building itself. Built about 50 years ago, it features tiki statues, tropical plants inside and out, an indoor waterfall and a WWII jeep parked outside. La Mariana's has been made famous by being the setting for the TV series Magnum PI. That can make getting a reservation a bit difficult and parking can be a nightmare.

It's such a fun place to hang out, and when the live band is playing, it's even better. They're interactive, entertaining, and create such a great experience. Unfortunately, the customer service has been consistently disappointing. The bartender has always seemed friendly, but the waitresses have been cold and often come across as rude. We usually want to come here, but the service makes it a hard sell sometimes. We'd love to bring more visiting family and friends here, but it's honestly a 50/50 decision because we never know what kind of service we'll get. The food is decent, but nothing that really stands out. The coconut shrimp and onion rings are both good, and the drinks are definitely a highlight. The piña colada is honestly one of the best we've had. For our family of five, plus two beers and one piña colada, lunch came to about $175 including tip. That's pretty expensive, so we only come on rare occasions. At that price point, we'd expect warmer, friendlier service. We initially gave them the benefit of the doubt and assumed we had visited on off days, but after several visits--including this past Friday with many of the same waitresses--we've found the service to be consistently cold and unwelcoming.
