Vancouver is very lucky to have a chef like Nico Schuermans, a great Belgium trained chef whom has created one of the most consistant and highly acclaimed restaurants in our neck of the woods. Chambar is a beacon of light tucked in a dreary block on Beatty St. Chef Nico reinvents classic Belgium dishes with flavours from North Africa and beyond. Chambar has a great selection of Belgium beers ranging from light pale ales and lagers to the full-bodied and rich dark ales. My favourite is the Augustijn Blonde with a light fruit aroma and a hint of citrus and vanilla. We usually skip the appetizers and go straight to their famous Belgium mussels. They have three choices: Coquotte, Vin blanc , or Congolaise. Our favourite is the Congolaise, which is mussels cooked with a tomato coconut cream, smoked chili & lime, and fresh cilantro. The portions were generous and the sauce is simply divine with a touch of spicy and tangy flavour. The mussels went perfectly with a side of pommes frites, although I did find the frites to be a bit too seasoned. For the entree, I had the Canard et chevre; roasted duck breast, goat cheese & tarragon gnocchi, sauteed scallions, in hazelnut gastrique. The duck was excellent, succulent and tender. The chewy gnocchi was a great compliment to the dish. The portions were just enough to make you feel full but not overbearing. Enough for us to skip the desserts this time around. The service is usually good despite attracting a lot of the trendy and pretentious crowd. The ambiance is quite dark and intimate. It's a bit cramped as you are literally side by side to your fellow neighbours and it takes no effort to listen to their banters. Overall, Chambar always provide consistant quality food. I actually dined at Chambar's old location quite a while ago, and I was craving those amazing mussels again. Upon finding out that they had moved (two doors down), we were impressed by their new revamped menu through their website and decided to head over for a belated birthday dinner. The restaurant now still maintains a funky, dark and contemporary vibe while feeling a lot more spacious and upscale. However, the noise is still a problem and there were times were we practically had to yell to talk to each other even though the table wasn't large at all. Overall, we enjoyed the atmosphere and everybody was impressed by the knowledgeable and kind staff who served us throughout the night. Everybody's favourite was the Coquotte Moules Frites (we shared mussels as an appetizer even though it's an entree) and we managed to soak up a lot of the broth with their bread roll, which we ordered on the side. The portion is quite massive and the dip that came with the fries was amazing. We loved how the pot of mussels contained a copious amount of smoked bacon and spring onion, which was enough to accompany each and every mussel! Honestly, we enjoyed the mussels, fries, bread and dessert more than the actual entrees (although the lamb was actually extremely tender). I would honesty give them 4.5 stars but because of the mussels, I rounded it up rather than down. The only things that we did not enjoy were: 1) They forgot that it was a birthday celebration, so there was no specific celebratory dish even though we ordered desserts. (They confirmed with us twice and still forgot, which lead to much disappointment after an amazing meal) 2) You have to pay for the bread, which doesn't really make sense if you're ordering mussels (since their broth is so good!) 3) It was extremely loud and we felt that a few tables were competing over who could be the loudest (not that anybody can do anything about it I suppose haha) 4) The kobe beef "le beouf" dish was neither cold nor hot, but room temperature. I personally dislike food served at room temperature because it feels like it had been forgotten before being served to me. Others may argue but I guess I'm just used to having my raw (or very rare) beef served to me cold, like in Japanese restaurants? 3.5 stars. I decided to take my son here for his 21st birthday dinner. I put a note on Open Table about his 21st and also told the server when I used the washroom. She knew, and even knew his name which I had written when I made the reservation. She asked if I knew which dessert he would order and I told her I didn't know at this point but she said, not to worry, it would be looked after. I enjoyed the Blue Fig martini. It was definitely a highlight that evening. For appys I ordered the Coquotte: Mussels cooked in a white wine cream, smoked bacon lardons, spring onions. My son ordered the Poutine à la belge. He didn't like this because of the little red peppercorns throughout and the cheese was similar to blue cheese. We didn't ask what it was. I traded my frites with him though I didn't care for the poutine either. The mussels were good, but not "wow" or anything. I liked the lardons best...I couldn't finish because I got full. Too much for an appetizer for one person! We were seated by the windows in the back and the restaurant was LOUD! I never really notice things like this, but it really bothered me this evening. It really hampered my dining experience. For main courses, my son ordered the Le fletan et queue de beouf which was sesame crusted halibut, crispy oxtail rice cake, mustard ginger & yuzu glaze, micro shiso. I ordered the Lamb Tagine: Braised lamb shank with honey, figs, cinnamon & cilantro, served with cous cous and zalouk. We were both really full so only had a couple of bites before packing it in. When our server came by, I told her we were too full to eat from the appys and she picked up our plates and walked away. I had to holler out to get her back and told her I'd like to take them. She said, "Oh really?" I looked at her a little confused and said yes. She said, "'Kay, I'll pack it up then". She was more pleasant when she returned the food. I just found it strange that she wouldn't think to ask if the plates were full - if you wanted it to go. All the other staff were great. The food servers, the host who came by to ask how we were doing at the beginning, etc. The lamb was so good too. Loved the flavours in this dish and was looking forward to finishing it! My son ate 1/2 the halibut and none of his oxtail rice cake. Said it was "ok" but if he came back, he'd try something else. It sure looked good. (Picture posted). After that, she brought the dessert menus. Neither of us could manage another bite so we declined and ordered Americanos. This is what disappointed me the most. Because we didn't order dessert, no Happy Birthday sentiments were wished or acknowledged. The bill came after that and she didn't even say happy birthday to him. I just thought for a $180 bill, they could have made a little more of an effort to acknowledge his birthday. A dessert amuse or something! Because of the loudness, the price and the birthday treatment, I won't be returning soon. I'm sorry it turned out disappointing. When we got home, only my dinner was packed. Wow just wow!!! 5 stars Plus! Its been awhile since I was impressed by the food and service the rest was bonus. I'm a big fan of Cafe Medina, its my go to place for brunch, but have never tried Chambar until now, and sad to say I've been missing out. While reading reviews and recommended by friends I knew it was time to try Chambar. I was really scared to come to a place like this with a big party. I reserved a table for 11 for my birthday, reso was for 5:30 on a holiday Monday with a limit of 2.5 hours. The drinks menu: I heard this place had a great selection of imported beers and tasty cocktails. I'm not a beer drinker but the selection looked impressive and the guys and gals in my table loved it. Me on the other hand tried the Pineapple Express and a glass of Wynn's Cab Sauvignon. I'm a sucker for anything with pineapple it was delish and wine went well with dinner. The food: In numerous occasion I've heard nothing but good things about the food and I had to try the "moules and frites" I stared with a green salad, nice light dressing really enjoyed it. For main I ordered the highly recommended moules and frites congolaise- mussels with tomato coconut cream sauce, it was a generous portion and yes it was yummmmy! The sauce was very rich, chunks of tomatoes or onions (it was a little dark to see what I was actually eating but it didn't matter) and lots of mussels. And it came with really good pomme frites with a dipping sauce. My husband ordered the Tajine d'aziz a l'agneau which I tried and wow it was amazing, at first we thought it would taste "different" with honey, figs, cinnamon and cilantro but that flavors just worked well together. And the more you eat it the better it tasted, I felt like I was in Morocco. The rest of the table was speechless (always a good sign when it comes to food). Amazing Service! Where do I begin, 1st taking a large party, surprisingly a lot of smaller establishments in downtown don't take larger parties over 6. They allowed us to bring a birthday cake (brownie points), one of the couple in our party came really late and yet they received there food at the same time as the rest of the table, every 5-10 minutes someone came by just to check up on us without being annoying, water lots of water I love places that refill water like its goin out of style. Our main server was super nice, only thing is we didn't know her name. 2.5 hours go by fast when having fun and eating great food, but we never felt rushed at all. The ambiance is nice comfortable yet modern and edgy, the feel of a high end restaurant without feeling too stuffy ie no white table cloths here. When you walk in, you are greeted by a large bar and a view of the rest of the restaurant. The expose brick gives it that downtown feel and the lighting yes a little dark makes it feel intimate. Our table was in the middle of the room which I really liked but still felt like we had a private function. I would defiantly come back even just for drinks but I'm a fan of the food. I made reservations here tonight here for my work team of about 20 people since we're in Vancouver for the week, and everything was incredible. I made the reservation a few months ago, since tonight was Valentine's Day. They were able to seat us all together at one long table, and I had pre-selected a price fixe menu for $65/person and it was honestly so worth it. It was actually priced in the mid-range compared to some other nice restaurants I was looking into (and when I was comparing menus and venues, it seemed like a much better value!). They were able to accommodate all of our group's dietary restrictions with ease (we had a few people who are lactose intolerant, vegan, or allergic to fish), and the vegan options looked amazing, like dishes I would be excited to order even as a meat lover! The price fixe menus change seasonally, but I don't think you can go wrong with anything at Chambar. Their drinks were also amazing and excellent quality. I tried my friend's hard apple cider and a Belgian beer called "duchesse de bourgogne," and they were both the best I'd ever had. I got a pineapple cocktail that was delicious also, not too sweet or syrupy. All of the food was incredible! I personally got a beet salad, a Sable fish main course with purple fried rice, sautéed greens & lotus root chips, and a honey custard dessert with crispy caramel and blood orange. I still need to try the dessert (had to take it to go because I was so full), but the Sable fish was perfectly cooked, sooo soft and flavorful. A tiny bit over salted for my taste, but very good. It came with black forbidden rice and greens in a delicious (white wine?) sauce. Service was excellent, attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. Also, it being Valentine's Day, our table was sprinkled with a rose petals and candles, which was quite nice :) Overall, I was super impressed and pleased with Chambar and would highly recommend it to anyone! Given that Chambar has been my favourite restaurant for close to a decade, I'm amazed that I had not written a Yelp report. When I first went here, I was blown away. I went for a Dineout and the dish I wanted had run out,.. I instead had mussels and something Moroccan that I never would have normally picked and it simply was one of the best things I've ever tasted,... period. At that time I also was less knowledgeable about beer and wine and the pairings were so well selected that I questioned if I'd been robbing myself maximizing the flavour since birth. It was that night that I discovered Belgian beers that remain my favourite. The next time I went, it was for a foodie event organized by Andrew Morrison who eventually went on to spearhead Scout Magasine. It was gluttonous, and also remains one of the highlights of my eating career. The following time was with my family for another Dineout,... short rib this time,... 3 for 3 trips here blew me away. This was all pre-reno, and frankly since the room was in my opinion also the best in the city form an ambiance POV that talk of changing it really worried me. Today, my family took me for a birthday brunch. First off the the place looks amazing! more spacious, a patio,.. completely updated but with some of the original great features incorporated, and more natural light. I suspect at night it will feel a bit more like the old place but for daylight, again tops as far as Vancouver options go. And the food? Yowsa! Fricking blew me away, top 3 breakfast of a lifetime, and everyone else agreed. You may have noticed I have yet to mention price. Being the city's top place, yes, pricey, but it is just so good it isn't a factor in my decision to return and on that topic I NEVER repeat high end places instead preferring to try a new one... Came here cuz I need to join a event nearby.. turn out to be the best breakfast I had in Vancouver. Fresh orange juice and grapefruit juice were indeed freshly squeezed. I know Belgium is famous for waffle... so I ordered several waffles with different flavors. Not as good as the ones I had in Belgium but still in great taste and decent quality. From the greeting with zero wait time, professional (and informative) service from our waitress, spotless environment, and delicious food we had a great experience here. If only my stomach was big enough to have everything on the menu, I would've tried it all! The Paella and Bon Matin was what we ordered, and you can't go wrong with either. What a nice place. Very nice atmosphere, perfect for a dinner out with friends. They have a few staples on the menu and the rest of it is changed as the seasons change and therefore, there are always plenty of fresh offerings. I, having overindulged during a lunch time snack, elected to have the heirloom tomato salad which isn't very big but it was quite fine considering I wasn't hungry at all when we got to the restaurant. Very nice seasonal dish. It's quite small so if you are hungry be sure to order an entree as well. I didn't and it was fine. Mixed with peaches very tasty. My friends had the mussels and the lamb which they all enjoyed. They have a great selection of beers and wine and some specialty cocktails. The service was great and we did not want for anything. I enjoyed it, maybe next time I'll be a bit hungrier. They request you call ahead for parties larger than eight people. And they tack on a gratuity fee of 18 percent. read more

This was seriously some of the best food I have ever eaten. We were visiting for the day from Seattle and decided to try some of the local flavor. That's when we found this gem. They change the menu quite frequently so there is something for everyone to try. I decided to try the salmon eggs Benedict over their liege waffles. When my meal arrived it was the most perfect salmon I have ever eaten in my life. The blend of the sauce, poached eggs and waffles just blended to perfection. I had their hot cider drink as well and it warmed me up on a cool day. The prices were pretty good considering the quality you are receiving. The decor is very upscale yet artsy at the same time. We went there for dine out today. I thought our reservation was at 830 but it was actually 8 PM. I received a phone call from them and even we were late for 20 minutes they were still willing to save our spot! Based on that I really like their service! Let's go straight to the food. We had scallops for appi. I have to say they make better scallops than blue water cafe! It was super tender! Did not taste like rubber! Steak was nicely seasoned and in Vancouver I really afraid ordering steak because when I order medium rare, they usually either over or under cook it so in the end I just order medium. But this place is good. I'm impressed...finally someone can make it right! Desert part I'm not a big fan of it but my babe loves the goat cheese cheesecake. SHE LOVES IT! Tasted like silk. Don't understand what all the fuss is about here. We decided to try brunch here. Got multiple dirty dishes and mugs that we had to send back. The famous waffles weren't crispy and weren't very good. Also tried the steak and eggs, which came with a very hard to chew steak with an iron flavor and dried out cornbread. We ordered the eggs over medium, but they came over easy. Service was also very inattentive. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

If I could, I would rate Chambar at 4 1/2 stars. We stopped by on an early Friday night, and the restaurant was starting to fill up. Due to the bad traffic that day, we were about 10 minutes late for our reservation, but the hostess was friendly and seated us right away. The atmosphere is dark and romantic: a good place to go on a date. Although the space is somewhat narrow in the front, it surprisingly opens up as you head towards the back. We had: Chimay Red beer: this was recommended by the server off of their extensive beer list. This beer was really good and easy to drink, although pricey (11.50 a bottle, but this is Canada I guess). Octopus a la Peruvian: this was my favorite dish of the night. Octopus was served two ways: thinly sliced as well as bigger pieces that were caramel glazed. The octopus was cooked sous vide, but the caramel had a smoky flavor, so the octopus tasted like it was charred on the grill. I normally don't order octopus because of its chewiness, but this was the dish of the night for me. Coquette moules frites: this dish had mussels cooked in wine and bacon. You can't go wrong with bacon and mussels, although I have had better (Salade de Fruits). Homard et Poularde; Chambar's take on surf and turf had poached lobster and chicken ballotine. The chicken was little dry, but the lobster was good. Mama Rizk: rosewater mille feuille was nice and light, but I really liked the mint tea sorbet. The food was good, but I was more impressed with the service. They are properly staffed, and the servers there give professional, not showy, service. With its combination of food, service and ambiance, I can see why Chambar is such a popular restaurant in Vancouver. read more

This is the second time (at dine out festival) that I have been in this restaurant. I like a lot Chambar, although it is that type of restaurant that we just go few times because of the price (we don't spend less than $100 for a couple) and the taste of dishes are not my favorites although they are really well done, with interesting flavors, very well presented. Also the place em coZy, it is easy to find parking at EASY PARK and the staff is very professional. At the Dine out Vancouver I had COQUILLES ST. JACQUES A LA 'BOB' for appetizer (very tasty), CURRY D'OMBLE DE L'ARCTIQUE for entree (good size, well prepared fish) and GATEAUX DE CHÈVRE for dessert (my favorite one. I loved the subtle taste of the goat cheese with the green apple ice cream). I tried LA BARRE DE CHOCOLATE and it was pretty good too. Even being on the Dine out, having time to leave the table, the waiter was very attentive all the time. I can't complain at all. ---- Update from July 28th 2017 - I returned to Chambar at lunch time and I was so disappointed!! They told us there was a waitlist and It would take 30min. During those 30min, I could see there were lots of empty table and remained empty even after we left. Not sure if their intention is to keep people outside to make it look busy but inside was pretty empty. The service was pretty slow for an empty place, the food options were disappointing! Very few options and pretty expensive for what I got. I also took few minutes to find where was the tiny food section hidden inside of the beverage menu. Hands down, my favorite restaurant I went to while visiting Vancouver. In inside feels very classy, and we were seated right away on a Thursday night. First off, if Phillip can be your server, you are in for a treat! He is very knowledgeable about the menu, and recommended we order the Duck and the Lamb, both of which were incredible! The wine list is kind of overwhelming, but there was a sommelier there to help recommend a bottle which I would highly recommend. We wanted a red that was light and fresh, and he selected for us the best. wine. ever. We tried to appetizers, the fried tuna belly and the octopus ceviche and they were equally delicious. Had a bad experience here, so I'm leaving a review but honestly they DID try to make it up to us so I do feel bad about giving a 3 rather than a 4 star. But the food was "a-okay" besides the entree that got messed up and the service was not great (asked for coffee several times before it was finally brought). Belgian waffles - definitely get these. These are fantastic and the sauces (we got white chocolate pistachio and lavender chocolate) were great. Omlette - so-so. A bit flat and lacking in flavor, but definitely healthy. Duck confit - this tasted awful. I think maybe something with the reduction? It tasted and smelled like vomit. I even powered through a few bites, thinking it was just me being hungover from yesterday. The other issue (other than the QC) against the duck confit is that there was barely any duck in there. There were maybe 5-6 small shards of duck. To make it up to us, the kitchen gave us a jelly and a raspberry truffle each. Raspberry truffle was slightly chilled and melted upon biting into it... so if it's on the menu, get it! read more

I could eat those mussels over and over again. A heaping bowl of mussles, cooked cooked with a tomato coconut cream, smoked chili & lime, fresh cilantro. Heaven. We got the Dine Out menu, so we also started off with a Smoked Sablefish, with a sweet pea puree, yam & ginger hay. An soft, melt in your mouth texture, with a slight smoky flavour. And then for dessert, when I saw the passionfruit component in this, I was sold! A Coconut cassava flan, with guava gelee & passionfruit sorbet. This wasn't good as I had anticipated though. Because the cassava was a rather light flavour, you had to have it with the guava as well as the passionfruit, and then, when all the flavours intermingle in your mouth, then it's a good dessert. Because we were dining at a later time of the evening, the place wasn't fully packed and we got pretty good service. They never rushed our meal, and allowed us to savour all the delicious food! read more

Great part of town, great ambience, great food, great drinks, great servers. Chambar has a beautiful interior...it's hip without being ridiculous. We sat at the bar, which I love doing, especially at the sort of place where you can tell the bartender (in our case, Brendan) what you're interested in and he'll whip you up something great. For my whisky-loving husband, that meant a NY sour, with whiskey, citrus, and a red wine float. For pregnant me, that meant a pineapple bliss mocktail, which was frothy, delicious, and not too sweet. Gravlax with savory waffle, poached egg, yuzu hollandaise, and pea shoots was rich and flavorful, but well balanced with the richness of the hollandaise, egg, and salmon offset by the freshness of the yuzu and pea shoots. The side of fruit wasn't anything special (apple, pineapple, grapes, etc.), but a dollop of berry preserves took it to the next level. Venison burger--so many elements (rich, juicy patty, beets, red wine jam, mushroom ragout, pickle) that covered all the bases (savory, sweet, umami, tangy) and melded together into some serious deliciousness! Just when we thought we were totally stuffed, we found the fortitude to make room for some tasty mignardises that appeared after our meal: a berry fruit gelée and square of peanut butter fudge. A couple of weeks ago, my boyfriend and I went to Chambar for a fine dining experience! We ordered the Cuisses de grenouilles, BBQ Frog Legs with Avocado dressing and it was AMAZING! They were so tender and delicate with a melt-in-your mouth texture! MMMMM I've had Frog Legs in France before and these ones at Chambar were just as delicious! For our main, I ordered the Fletan au Tamarin (Haida Gwaii halibut, sea asparagus, sweet peas, mustard greens, spicy tapioca, jalapeño pistou, tomato tamarind broth), it was pretty delicious. Interesting concept with the broth poured over the meal, it wasn't too dry or too soupy. Who ever thou tapioca in a savoury meal?! Well it works, everything about it was perfect! My boyfriend ordered the La Piéce de Boeuf (Char grilled 9oz Manhattan steak, cauliflower purée, broccolini, heirloom tomatoes, chimichurri, horseradish & shallot marmalade.) The steak was pretty delicious with the peppercorn which really brought out the flavour of the meat. Pretty sure if we had to take a wild guess, we would of thought it was regular mash potatoes, but nope - I give the cauliflower healthy option a 2 thumbs up! The show stopper was the dessert, Terre Rocheuse de Chocolat (Belgian chocolate mousse, almond chocolate streusel, crisp chocolate caramel, raspberry buttermilk sherbet), if you love CHOCOLATE as much as much as we do this will steal your heart and make you wanting more! It was dark in the restaurant and at first I thought the raspberry buttermilk sherbet was some exotic fruit, I was surprised but then we devoured into it without any hesitation! My boyfriend had Belgium beer and I had a lemony cocktail, both were very tasty! The portion sizes were very good for a high end restaurant. Just the perfect amount because the last thing we want to do is leave feeling hangry! Hehe They recommend a 2 to 2.5 hour dining experience, a bit longer than we usually dine for but it was so worth it. The only thing was we had multiple servers which was okay and we had to flag them down towards the end because we were a bit tired. Chambar truly lived up to it's high review and expectation, I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a fine dining experience and if you have never tried French food, this would be the perfect place to go. Hmmm, I don't know what make of Chambar. First off, bring a sweater as its a little chilly. The dećor is lovely, modern. They had a beautiful light fixture that looked like glass orbs. Very nice. The noise level is a bit much for me. I felt as though I really had to talk louder than I normally would. Our waitress seemed a little preoccupied and a bit on the aloof side. Carpaccio d'Autruche, was lovely. I enjoyed it especially the black truffles and the pickled portobello mushroom. This appy is great for sharing. I had Canard Et Gnocchi, I suppose I should have read the menu better. I thought this was a pasta dish but it was more of a salad. I got five gnocchi!! The duck was seasoned well and had a crispy skin. I'm really on the fence as to if I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone. I think it's a little over priced for what you get. Had brunch here on a Sunday after the sun run. Didn't realize they take resos so waited for a good 30mins. Which wasn't too bad considering it was a Sunday after the big run. Really impressed with the decor. Very comforting and modern but not intimidating and cold. I ordered their omelette which changes regularly depending on what fresh ingredients they have. It comes with some fresh salads and this amazing focaccia bread! It was so good guys! Must try their bread regardless what u order! :) I also ordered a side of spicy potatoes - big yum!! My bf got the steaks and egg dish and he loved it. It also comes with a small salad but with corn bread instead! He said the way they cooked the steak was delicious. We all enjoyed our meal. Our server was nice. The food did take a little longer tho but we didn't mind as we were with good company and just chatted along. Will I come back again! Definitely! ... 10/10 wow! Speechless. I've been here for brunch and it's a completely different vibe in the evening.. think sexy, dark, musky NYC penthouse with leather seats, earthy wood and brick walls. Now, picture not food on the table, but art. This is art. I can't even explain "Tajine d'Aziz à l'Agneau" how good it was. You need to try it. Thank goodness it is a dish that isn't going anywhere. They do change up their menu based on season however, this dish is always available. Now let's talk about their lava cake.. cactus lava cake what? Ya no. This is something that DOESNT even compare. Made in house, 10-15 min to make .. very very hard to share this dish. The toasted marshmallow on the side with the ice cream and the crumbs... I may come back just for that. Incredible. The service was very high class and professional. Definitely a restaurant to wear your highest heels in! Absolutely enjoyed my experience. Spent over two hours here. read more

I was conflicted whether to return to Cafe Medina or try Chambar for brunch while in Vancouver for business. The meal I'd had at Cafe Medina, in it's original location, was one of the most memorable I've ever had. Wanting to branch out, I decided to give Chambar a try. Some of the menu items are the same, which is not surprising given the two restaurants have the same owner. Classics include the waffles and the lavender flavored latte, which was a little too sweet for me. I ordered, L'omellette which was served with roasted butternut squash, spiced cherry tomatoes, basil, pine nuts, feta & pea tip salad. It was more fritatta/pancake in style than a traditional omelette, yet very good. The place was fairly empty, not surprising given it was 9:30 a.m. on a Tuesday, but the service was attentive and the restaurant had a nice atmosphere. I wanted to go back for dinner to try the famous Moules Frites. Alas, I'll need to try them on my next trip. read more

Brunch at the still relatively new location of the otherwise decade old Chambar Restaurant is an undeniably pleasant experience. Their well-regarded Belgian-focused menu aside, the space is already an inspiring fixture of dining and design in the cross section of downtown aptly known as Crosstown on Beatty Street near the Stadium District. A trip to Chambar (or their former sister restaurant Café Medina for that matter) is usually incomplete without an order of their trademark waffles (with milk chocolate lavender and white chocolate pistachio rosewater) as an almost necessary treat to supplement your weekend meal. A glance at the diverse and appetizing sounding brunch menu and the paella (with a fried egg, curried orzo, spicy sausage, zucchini, red pepper, roasted corn, and Grana Padano) immediately caught my eye (and stomach). It was fairly delicious in its diverse but satisfying mix of flavours in skillet form. We also shared the staple fricassée (with braised short ribs, balsamic cipollini onions, potatoes, watercress, fried eggs, and applewood smoked cheddar) and it was suitably delectable in its combination of meat, eggs, and potatoes in a nice package (also in skillet form). Mussels, Lamb shanks, Belgium Beers, Great atmosphere First, mussels and lamb shanks! Need I say more? I have had lamb shanks at a few notable restaurants and this, is the best! Mussels, either way (red or white sauce), you won't be disappointed. Best Belgium beers list I have seen yet. Second, it is very busy so reservation is a must. We had to wait quite a while last time so went next door for a drink while waiting. Also, the secret is that they are sister restaurants with Cafe Medina which has a mile long line for brunch; this means you should try coming here for brunch if you like Medina's food. Third, great ambiance for both a date, family outing, impressing friends or a relaxing evening. One of the only restaurants in the city where I have never had a bad meal. Went here with dragon boy thinking we were going for my bday dinner. Little did I know he had planned a surprise and had all my friends there waiting for us! The whole restaurant looked great. The renovations definitely turned the place into an open and classy place. Before the renos, the restaurant was dark and intimate. Now there's a patio, a downstairs, and an open dining area in the back. We ordered frog legs to start. They were delicious and came with an avocado ranch. Dragon boy had mussels and fries and I had the lamb. The lamb was ok...probably wouldn't order it again. The mussels were on point as always. Make sure to order a side of bread to soak up all the broth! The desserts were presented beautifully. The jardin de baies was amazing! Too bad they spelt my name wrong. Oh well - I'm used to it. Overall a fantastic night with great food. The restaurant is sophisticated without being stuffy. Service was a bit slow but I'll let it go since I was in great company. read more

They have a wide selection of teas, lattes and cocktails to start and you must get 1 or 2 waffles.. they're on the smaller side but tastes so unique...! not floury.. but more tapioca chewy with a bit of a crunch.. there are also 8 types of dips you can choose from. I got the pistachio rose water and milk chocolate with lavendar For the entree, I got the salmon with greens and 2 poached eggs. Nice french menu but the girls ordered a dish they though were eggs benedict but came out more like a charcuterie. So look at some yelp photos prior to ordering. Seriously the best Eggs Benedict I've ever eaten in my life! Why, you ask? Because the English muffin is replaced by a WAFFLE! The restaurant itself is modern with a classy feel. It's beautiful and I loved the ambiance. It always makes my heart so happy with the restaurant is lovely and complements it's wonderful food. I love waffles so much I even ordered one to start with. I picked the salted caramel for a topping and there were gold flecks inside the sauce! Such a fancy and beautiful touch for such a delicious waffle! Possibly the best waffle I've eaten, and I've eaten a lot of waffles since I LOVE them so much! When my Eggs Benedict came out, I was so excited! I ordered them with smoke salmon and everything was just so perfect! The salmon was perfect, the eggs were poacher perfectly and the hollandaise sauce was perfectly complementary to the dish. And, it was on a waffle!!! Everything paired deliciously together! I can't wait to come back to Vancouver. I will definitely be eating here again! read more

Okay I'll admit I was not initially planning on going to Chambar... I did a yelp search breakfast in the area and the first hit was a place a few doors down. But the lineup there looked over an hour long. In contrast, we waited for less than ten minutes at Chambar on a Sunday morning around 10am, as long as we could give the table back for an 11:45am prior reservation which was not a problem at all. I actually can't remember exactly what we all had even though it was only a week ago. Normally, choosing breakfast is a pretty boring affair, being just variations of toast, eggs & bacon, but I remember I really liked Chambar's breakfast menu. You first enter the restaurant into their 'lounge' area, with a nice bar, banquets and dim lighting and a narrow hall. If you get seated in the back dining area, the room is much bigger, more open but still with intimate ambiance. The server we had have us by far the best service we had at any restaurant. He had a rhythm and took care of us flawlessly. Every server in Vancouver should be like him. Now the food: we had mussels & fries and tuna ceviche to start. Mussels and fries were excellent and I could not get enough of it. Tuna ceviche on the other hand was a bit underwhelming compared to the mussels. As an entrée, I ordered chicken and king crab legs. I have to say, although it was good, I wasn't blown away by it. I tried my boyfriend's duck an gnocchi and thought I should have ordered that instead! For dessert, I had mille feuille with rosewater cream and mint tea ice cream and it was amazing! Overall, I'd say my experience at Chambar was excellent and would definitely recommend it. read more
