Disclaimer: I am both Mexican and Salvadoran and have tried many a Mexican + Salvadoran restaurant. Also I'm from LA so you know I've tasted some of the best tacos and pupusas across the country. This has go to be the best combination of both ever! Tacos were tasty and traditional street taco style, with high quality meat. Pupusa with Loroco was cheesy af! The curtido felt very fresh and not too vinegary. The salsa for the pupusas was perfect and so was there red Mexican salsa. Both were extremely tasty and packed with bold flavors. And just for good measure, I got a camarón tostado and that was absolute perfection. You could taste the fresh quality in the shrimp and the veggies and that always makes such a difference in taste. This is a place that is easy to drive by. I've passed by millions of times going down El Camino. I just got some tacos delivered and they were awesome. The cabeza might be the best I've ever had. Very colorful restaurant! The vibe and music is loud in here. Not that many employees today; just a waitress and a few cooks. Their menu is extensive. I think almost every item had a picture. The menu itself is about a foot tall. I heard their known for their papusas so I had to get a few which had the cheese and pork. Their slaw and tomato sauce is great! The papusa itself is decent size, the cheese is nicely melted and the pork is pretty soft with a refried bean texture. I was hoping they'd be more crunchy but hey, not a big deal! I give this dish a B+ I enjoyed the chips with the fresh spicy salsa too! That'll keep you busy while ordering food. I like this place a lot and I will come back to try more! read more

Their Chile verde dish tastes like dog food. I had one taste and said oh no. I was Absolutely disgusted with it and it was a complete waste of time. Restaurant itself sits on its own separate parking area and appears to be an old restaurant that's had an upgrade to bring it to what it is now. I have been trying to satisfy a craving and thought to try something a little different. The wife and I went to the Chalateco in Mountain View to find out if the Saladoran food here is different than the other places in San Jose. Well, to make a long story short, NO! nothing is different. In actuality, the food was a little less tasty. I had a "Megahuarche" ( probably misspelled ) that was anything but MEGA. About half the size of other Salvadoran places and a little on the bland side. The wife had a three quesadilla with carne asada. The quesadillas were very greasy. They looked great but tasted a bit off. Beware that there is chucks of raw jalapenos inside. We also tried an order of nachos. We are trying to find the best nachos in the area and will always order some just to see and taste what the place has to offer. A small plate with very little cheese, a glob of refried beans under the chips, topped with a few pieces of avocado, onions, jalapenos and a scoop of salsa. Overall not a great experience inside the restaurant. It is very drafty and is either really cold or hot depending on the ambient temperature outside. We remember coming here last summer and sweating. Went in March of 2017 and froze. read more

I ordered a few Mexican dishes and they were not spicy at all. Our food came out one at a time and the drinks came when we were finished eating after asking for them multiple times. The ceviche was old. Had a very off taste. (Also ordered agua chile and shrimp was fine, not spicy at all though ) I explained this to the waitress and asked to change it for something else and she took the plate. I use to love the pupusas revueltas here. They use to come packed and the filling was delicious. I went back today, and since there are new owners the pupusas were completely different even just from first glance. They didn't look as big as they normally would and the insides weren't gushing out per normal. I then took a bite and soon realized I would now have to find a new pupusas spot. The revuelta pupusa tasted like a cheese pupusa with little chicharon filling. I ended up picking out the cheese from my pupusas after tasting nothing but cheese in the first few bites. Friendly staff, tasty food, and the price per food item is reasonable. I eat at this location once every few months, and what I love most is that the quality of food always remains very high. If I had to recommend one dish, I would recommend the chicken Alambres, which is a plate of chicken tacos that comes with chopped bacon, onions, and bell peppers (photo below). During my most recent visit, I ordered four pupusas ($2.25 each); two with pork, one with pork and potatoes, and one with beans and cheese. Before my pupusas were prepared, I was brought a bowl of complimentary chips and salsa. The chips weren't homemade, but the salsa was, and it was damn good! I sat at the table closest to the kitchen, so I was able to watch a lovely older woman prepare my pupusas by hand. When the pupusas were brought to my table, they were warm, fluffy, not greasy, and tasted fresh. If you're in the area, I recommend eating here at least once. read more

Chalateco holds a special place for me in that it was the first review I ever wrote (the one in Santa Clara). Now there's one in my neck of the woods. I've never had Salvadorean nearby and not only that, it's got a ton of selection compared to any other Salvadorean joint. What surprised me here is they have an outside area, and with the weather the way it's been, it was nice to eat in the sun. Had some pupusas (chicharon+queso is an always get) and a chorizo Pambazo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pambazo) to round out the meal. Food was good and the staff were pretty friendly. Glad to see the selection of Latin food choices grow quite a bit now that they're in the area. read more

It's been a long day, but I decided to checkout the Goodwill Store for big spoons... and was on the way out when I remembered that I have been meaning to check out the Salvadorian restaurant that had recently opened in an old Una Mas that had been carved out of an ancient Taco Bell site on El Camino, just South of the 85/El Camino junction. I walked in determined to make a to-go order. The interior is big and bright yellow and orange. I liked it at 7pm after a long day, but I would not go there if I had a headache! I was handing a huge, laminated menu that was bold and bright with HUGE (and I mean HUGE photos of the plates of food, bright font and explanations that pretty English friendly. The menu was pretty overwhelming, though, FULL of tasty choices. I chose the Lengua (tongue) plate and the Alhambra tacos, corn tortillas and then said, "Oh! ...and I want some papusas!" I ordered up 4 papusas of the beans, meat and cheese variety. The food did take a little time to be made, but that this because everything is made fresh on the grill. The papusas, which are a thick tortilla stuffed with your choice of fillings, was hand-patted and cooked as I watched. There was no microwave in this kitchen! The cashier who took my order was cheerful and upbeat. I was able to watch the cooks prepare the food as I waited, and watch the big screen t.v. that had no sound. The music that was playing in the background was upbeat and on the loudish side. Since there are two "rooms" to this tiny restaurant, I think conversation would have been difficult in the first, but easily heard in the second. Now to the FOOD! MMMMMMMmmmm! Wait, is that even a word?! ::laugh::: Let's see, the papusas were thick and warm, think Latin Keema naan. It is an extreme comfort food. I was just going to taste one while I was driving home and I ended up INHALING two of them! OMG! The Alhambra tacos (I paid the extra 2.00 for cheese) were small, but extremely delish. There were four of them to an order, which came with a wedge of lime. The meat was tasty and warm, sitting perfectly in their dual small tortillas. They were about four bites apiece... and I think the cheese was a good thing (as Martha Stewart would say). Thin slices of lengua (beef tongue) were sitting in a pepper and tomato type goulash. The tongue was melt-in-your-mouth tender and the accompanying stew was heavenly. One caveat, be sure to check for bay leaf before consuming! The tongue came with rice and beans (and tortillas). Also in our meal was a spicy, but not sweet or hot shredded cabbage (cole slaw), a thick green hot and spicy salsa, a baggie of hot sauce, about a hundred napkins (needed) and a fork and knife. I sincerely hope they didn't think that I ate this entire feast by myself! :::laugh:::::: (They only put in one fork and one knife). This was ALOT of food, enough for three people. Next time I won't order quite so many papusas, or I'll order _only_ papusas!! While, I was waiting, I noticed those big sandwiches that looked like they were put on Indian Fry Bread looked realllly good, next time! Ok, obviously I will be back to this restaurant if I am already planning my next order. Total cost for this humongous amount of food was thirty-three bucks. Oh yeah, I will be back! read more

Went here for the 1st time after passing by it all these years. Boy, have I been missing out! I was in a hurry and decided to order take out. I was initially planning to order the standard taqueria fare when I noticed the Yuca con Chicharron plate. I was curious so I ordered that instead. When I arrived home, I found fried yuca with some fried pork chunks supplied with a delicious, slightly spicy "coleslaw" and an ok red sauce. What a real treat to partake of! While I was waiting for my meal, I had the opportunity to go through their extensive menu. First thought...this isn't a standard taqueria shop even though it's located in a former Taco Bell! Second thought...how can they offer all these items, especially so many types of Pupusa? Answer...they make it all from scratch. I was entranced as I watched the cooks hand making each Pupusa. The first cook grabs a handful of the masa de maiz, flattens it out, makes a pocket, grabs a handful of the filling, seals it, then hands it to another cook. The second cook starts slapping the pupusa flat then puts it on the flat top to cook. Wow! There were 3 cooks working harmoniously in the kitchen to put out all the food.
