We wanted papusas and Comalito came up with spectacular reviews and was open (at time of writing, they open Fri-Sun)! Food and service were great. Food ordered: Yucca fries on the house! 1. Plantano Fritas (4/5) I love a plantains and these were delicious and less oily than other which I appreciate! Personal preference is a I prefer a little more sweetly caramelized plantains, but I did really enjoy this. The dish comes with a white creamy sauce and a refried bean dip - both yummy and not overpowering in flavor. Papusas: Lots of flavors to choose from! And in general, for all the papusas, the papusa batter is wonderful and the porportion of filling to papusa is perfect. 2a. Calabaza Papusa - mixed cheese + zuchinni (4/5) This was the most cheesey papusa, where the cheese was the heavy lifter. I enjoyed it and every bite had a nice cheese pull too it. I would have liked to see a little more zucchini green, and for it to add to the textures. 2b. Frijol y Queso Papusa - mixed cheese + refried beans (5/5) My favorite! Can't go wrong with a bean and cheese papusa and this was so so good. I recommend this classic pairing of flavors anywhere. I was thinking about this papusa for days. 2c. Chicken Papusa - mixed cheese + chicken (5/5) This was also really good. the chicken is mixed in with the cheese, so every bite has both, which was nice. There was also a lovely seasoning which balanced all the flavors beautifully. 3. Churros: This usually comes with vanilla ice cream, and the server warned us they didn't have any in stock. We were fine with that because we love churros. When we were complete with our papusas, they served us our churros and surprised with apple slices instead of ice cream which was a lovely touch. Parking: There is no designated parking lot that we have found, but the public 2 hour parking lot 2 blocks over on Second Ave! Overall, we really enjoyed our experience at Comalito. The hardest hurdle is parking, but once you find the public parking lot a couple of blocks over, it was easy to find and gives you a little exercise before you eat! I came here to meet up with a friend for dinner. The location is doesn't have a lot of street parking available, but there is a small public parking lot a few blocks away. The spot is full of character and a good amount of seating. The customer service is great. Everyone was so kind. We each ordered 3 pupusas of bean & cheese w/ curtido and some casamiento to share. I also got a side order of carne asada. All the food was good. Everything was full of flavor. The carne asada was tender. The pupusas had the perfect mix beans and cheese, with the masa being light and fluffy. The casamiento with a great mix of rice and beans. The only negative was the curtido. It was ok. Solid Salvadoran restaurant. Their horchata reminds me of what my grandma used to make. It's not at all like Mexican horchata but I like it better that way. The house chips are unique. They're made of thick tortillas cut into strips that are crunchy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside served with bean dip. The yuca fries were good but I wasn't a fan of the chipotle dip. It went well better with the house bean dip. The platanos were ripe and soft. I prefer them a little less ripe but they were still tasty. The pupusas are small they suggest 2-3 per person for a reason. I got chicharon con queso. They were flavorful but they weren't close to the best pupusas I've tried elsewhere. You would never guess there is a cozy little restaurant tucked between a row of neighborhood shops. Honestly, if I had not mapped it out beforehand, I probably would have driven right past it and cried later. So why did we end up here? It was a sunny Sunday afternoon, we had just wrapped up some activities in Redwood City, and we were in that "we are hungry but do not know what we want" phase. Living on the east side of the bay, I really miss good Hispanic food on this side, so Yelp became my best friend for the day. After a quick search this hidden gem popped up. Parking was a little tricky at first, but I took it as a test of fate. Just as I turned in front of the restaurant, a single street parking spot opened up right there. I pulled in and decided it was destiny. This place was meant for us. The menu is not huge, but the options are interesting, and the real star of the show is the pupusas. Make sure you ask about the special of the day. I have been here twice now. The first time I had caldo de pollo. The second visit I ordered caldo de res. Both were hearty, comforting, and full of flavor. Each bowl came with a scoop of tasty rice and two plain pupusas that did not stay plain for long. My kids went straight for the cheese and chicken pupusas and demolished them. My boss, also known as my wife, loved her garlic and pork pupusas, especially after adding some of the red salsa, which has just the right amount of kick, and a pile of pickled cabbage. I tried to steal a bite, but parenting karma showed up and I was left with the kids plain cheese pupusas. Still delicious, but not quite the same. They also brought out complimentary fried yuca with beans, which was such a nice touch. We ordered the yuca fries with chicharrones as well, and that plate is a serious meal. Fried yuca, lightly pickled cabbage, extra crispy chicharrones, and a generous drizzle of that savory red salsa. My my my, by the end I was one bite away from rolling myself out the door. The vibe is warm and relaxed, and the staff are genuinely friendly. By the second visit we already felt like regulars. We truly enjoyed our time here, and it feels great to support a small local business like this. We will definitely be back. Coupled with the very reasonable prices, my friend and I were able to sample most of the menu We didn't love the horchata, which tastes very different from the Mexican horchata we were used to, but the food was all pretty good. We got three pupusas (calabaza, ajo y queso, and revuelta), which honestly tasted somewhat similar. I actually preferred the first two, as the revuelta came with a small portion of ground pork and noticeably less cheese. I'd recommend getting pupusas with apps (like the pastelitos/empanadas) for more variety Our favorite item was actually the complementary chips with the bean dip! Beautiful space in the part of Middlefield Road with tons of delicious Central American food. Street parking is hard to come by but there's a parking lot 2 blocks down if you need it. It's not particularly busy on the Sunday we showed up, but the space is small and there's always 2-3 tables occupied. We wanted some pupusas so we both opted for the breakfast pupusas with an egg and some extra chunky tomato sauce on top of it. While we waited, we also got yucca fries and bean dip on the house -- those are pretty tasty! And I got a horchata that is more nutty than the Mexican ones, which tasted familiar, like Taiwanese traditional nut milks. The pupusas came hot and crispy, and they are quite huge! I couldn't finish the 2 that I got, but they were quite tasty. I liked the one with meat a bit more than the garlic cheese one. Even though they aren't crispy anymore when I reheated them the next day, I feel the flavors got even better. Every time I'm impressed with the quality of food and care put into preparation (everything always tastes freshly cooked, with good ingredients and just the right balance of seasonings) Churros were amazing, would highly recommend. Super freshly fried, not under seasoned, but also not overly sweet. chocolate, strawberries, and ice cream brings it all together. Whole fried fish special is not always available, but was undoubtedly awesome. The rice was cooked in some sort of broth to be tender, and then was fried up pilaf style, which was delicious. I ordered 3 different kinds, the queso, chicharron , revuelta (which is cheese, ground pork, and beans). All of these were made fresh to order, and you can tell by how piping hot they came out. The queso and revuelta were my favorites and with their curtido (fermented cabbage salad) to top it with, it was a solid meal. The best part, I ordered 3 pupusas and a can of coke, and my total was under $14 before tip. I was shocked because I didn't expect the meal to that inexpensive especially since the quality was so good. I think it's $3.25 per pupusa, so if you are looking for a quality, affordable meal, you might want to check out Comalito. Anyways, the food was all pretty tasty, but I had to dock off stars for a super super super long wait for food. Also, it wasn't clear from the special menu that the carne asada was not a steak pupusa, but actually a steak platter (though, this may be from me not being familiar with this cuisine). They handed out complimentary tortilla fries to the table, but the wait still was super long. The guy was very friendly at the counter and gave us good recs on what to order. The place itself also looked pretty cute and clean. We got the empanadas, yucca fries and 5 pupusas: 2 veggies and 3 meat kinds. The yucca fries were not the best because they werent starchy enough, but we really liked the empanadas! Also we thought all the meat pupusas (with beans, cheese and pork) were so good (warm, flavourful and fresh), but we forgot the name of it!!
